Joseph Ames
Joseph William (Bill) Ames, 71, of Manchester, Mich., died unexpectedly at his home of an apparent heart attack on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009. Bill was born on Jan. 10, 1938 in Sunfield to Herbert W. and Sarah (Smith) Ames.
He married Linda Halsey on Sept. 11, 1958. Bill was employed as a vocational agricultural teacher for four years at Springport High School and for four years at Vicksburg High School. In 1968, he left the teaching he loved to become the MSU agricultural extension agent for Washtenaw County, a position he held for 28 years until his retirement in 1995.
In the mid 1980s, Bill began portraying Abraham Lincoln for the farm community which was undergoing a depression. Upon retirement, he expanded his portrayals each year as he participated in more and more events: Project Red, Civil War re-enactments, Historical Museum presentations, school presentations, etc. He was a member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, and was Abraham Lincoln of the Year in 2003. During the past few years, he began working Mondays at the United Producers (formally Michigan Livestock Exchange) in Manchester so that he could continue to have contact with "his farmers." Bill was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Ann Arbor, being the first person most people saw at the back door. He also helped with the homeless ministry. Bill has received numerous honors and awards throughout the years for his dedication to those he loved to serve.
Bill was preceded in death by parents, Herbert and Sarah Ames; sister, Susan Ames; granddaughter, Angela Luree Daniels; and father-in-law, Robert Halsey.
Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda; four daughters, Stacey Ames, Vanessa (Phil) Albee, Theresa Ames, Stephanie (Bruce) Carlton; five grandchildren, Ben (Stephanie) Carlton, Matt (Danielle) Carlton, Chett Albee, Megan Carlton, and Ryan Albee; and two great-grandchildren, Madison Rose and Hunter Elias Carlton. Bill is also survived by brother, Herbert (Connie) Ames; cousins, Janet (Kendall) Baughman and Clif (Susan) Schultz; and mother-in-law, Rhea Halsey. Bill leaves behind many friends and associates.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Rev. Paul Simpson Duke officiating. Interment took place at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Contributions in Bill's memory may be made to the First Baptist Church of Ann Arbor for ministries to the homeless, or the Charity of One's Choice.
Debra Ann Anderson
Debra Ann Anderson of Eaton Rapids, age 56, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side. She was born in Eaton Rapids, October 11, 1952, the daughter of Albert and Doris (Jordan) Adams. Debra graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1970. She married her husband Don of 36 years on March 10, 1973 in Oceanside, CA. Debra was employed as a bus driver for the school and retired in 2004, after 18 years of service. She enjoyed flower gardening, camping, playing with her dogs and spending time with her family.
Debra is survived by her husband, Don of Eaton Rapids; daughters, Amy (Brad) Wester of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, Cathy (Ed) Siwek of Joliet, IL; soon to be granddaughter; parents, Albert and Doris; brothers, Ricky (Cindy) Adams of Springport; sisters, Nancy (Bryan) Breakey of Manuel, ND, Tina Franks of Olivet. She was preceded in death by sister, Linda Adams; sister-in-law, Kathy Adams; niece, Rebecca Adams.

Harold Anderson
Harold “Andy” C. Anderson, 84, of Charlotte, died Thursday, April 9, 2009. Mr. Anderson was born July 25, 1924 in Parkersburg, W. Va., the son of Harold and Florence (Jones) Anderson.
Mr. Anderson worked for the Social Security Administration in Traverse City and Lansing retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed camping, the New York Times crosswords puzzles and golfing. Mr. Anderson was very comfortable in the kitchen where he loved making candies, breads and pies.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret in 1983 and son, Donald in 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Shelby; daughter, Rebecca (John) Jamros of Charlotte; three step-daughters, Jennifer Cartwright, Sally Cartwright, Carin Chunga; 10 grandchildren, Sarah Zera, Johnny Jamros, Ian Elston, Adam Smith, Ryan Decourcey, Trevor Rose-Hamblin, Andrew Rose-Hamblin, Ryland Norris, Caylee Chunga, Tala Chunga; and brother, Russell Friess of Akron, Ohio.
Memorial services were held Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Potterville United Methodist Church with Reverend Rebecca Morrison officiating.

Judy K. Andreas
Judy K. Andreas of Lansing, age 66, passed away September 28, 2009. She was born July 18, 1943 in Lansing, the daughter of Gregory and Winifred Nellie (VanGilst) Andreas. Judy was a hairstylist at Applause Salon and will be missed by her co-workers, Lyle, Pennie, Vanessa and Lisa.
Her void will never be filled. Her second family, Julie Stasi, Dave and Lucia Allen, Vita Stasi and her God Daughter Angie, will miss her terribly. Others that will miss her include her step-mother, Beverly Andreas, Dr. Edie Kimball, her incredibly compassionate and caring veterinarian, the members of the Obedience Club of Greater Lansing, special friends, Sue, Peggy and Laura. Most of all, Judy will be missed by her beloved dogs, Dolly, Meg, Lovey and Bear. The love you gave them was immeasurable.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Vickie Andreas.
Funeral Services were held Monday, October 5, 209 at Church of the Resurrection, 1531 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Frieda Andrews
Frieda May Andrews, 85, of Charlotte, passed away Friday, October 16, 2009. She was born December 6, 1923 in Vermontville, the daughter of Fredrick and Anna Kuball. Frieda lived life to the fullest, enjoying quilting, gardening, baking and looking at the moon. She also loved dancing, big band music and being at the lake. Frieda looked out for her friends, often known as “Dr. Frieda.” She worked in the Eaton County Abstract Office as Clerk/Secretary for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Ed Andrews; children, Marcia Young, Hal (Pam) Andrews and Sheila (Jeff) Bisel; grandchildren, Sherrie (Shad) Golding, Jim Young, Kristie Andrews, Tricia (Jason) Somers, Kristin VanDorpe and Dustin (January) Burke; great grandchildren, Devin and Blaine Somers, Kasen VanDorpe and Kirstin Golding; sister, Marie Griffith and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 19 at Pray Funeral Home, with Pastor Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.

Valorie J. Anes-Metcalf
Valorie J. Anes-Metcalf of Lansing, age 41, passed away in Port Huron September 19, 2009. She was born in Eaton Rapids, October 9, 1967, the daughter of Daniel and Lora (Johnson) Metcalf. She worked for Odessa Auto Auction in Dimondale for the past 15 years. Valorie loved to fish, scrap book and take pictures. She most enjoyed anything that had to deal with nature activities. Valorie had a big heart and an open door policy to all in need. She was a strong single mother to her four children and her grandchildren.
Valorie is survived by her husband, Michael Anes; daughters, Ashley Bynam of Lansing, Crystal Campbell of Lansing; sons, Eric Metcalf of Lansing, Robert Campbell of Lansing; grandchildren, Santee Franklin Jr., Dymond Blacksher, Shamaja Franklin, Elijah Campbell, Dejana Milton; father, Daniel Metcalf of St. Louis, MO; mother, Lora Slone of Butler, IN; brothers, Johnny Metcalf, Thomas Metcalf; sister, Tina Blundell; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sindy Metcalf; grandparents, Estill and Lora Johnson.

Jean Antico
Jean Frances Antico, 80, of Haslett passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2009 at the Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte. Jean was born Dec. 2, 1928 in Detroit, the daughter of Gertrude and Frank Peters. As a youngster, she was raised in part by her beloved Aunt Hazel (Grover) Rich.
Jean joined the workforce at the age of 16 and worked as a legal secretary for almost 60 years. She spent most of that time in the Lansing area, working for several different attorneys - including the law firm of Warner, Hart, Morgan and Peters in Eaton Rapids. While both working and raising a family, she went back to school and earned a bachelor’s degree in Ancient History from Michigan State University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
In her later years, Jean cultivated the practice of Kripalu Yoga and taught classes for a number of years.
Despite being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006, she continued to teach as long as she was able. An intelligent, independent woman, Jean was a voracious reader and enjoyed gardening. Some of her favorite times were spent in the company of close friends, going to antique shops and shows in between stops for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
She was preceded in death by an infant twin brother, Jack Peters.
Jean is survived by two daughters, Carla (Tony) Bumstead of Eaton Rapids and Mary Antico of Montreal, Quebec; brothers, Jim (Tempe) Peters of Carlsbad, Calif., Tom (Kathy) Peters of San Jose, Calif., and Don (Kate) Peters of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren, Sam, Andy and Kelly Bumstead of Eaton Rapids and Benjamin and Nicholas Antico of Montreal, Quebec; and a number of very close friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main Street, Eaton Rapids with Fr. Bennett Constantine officiating. A luncheon reception will follow at the St. Peter Church Hall, 515 E. Knight St., Eaton Rapids.

Emma Armagost
Emma Fay Armagost, 69, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009. She was a retired dietary manager in Immanuel Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009 at Free Methodist Church in Charlotte. Arrangements were made by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Austin Armstrong
Austin M. Armstrong, 15 of Potterville passed away May 21, 2009. Austin was born March 22, 1994 in Lansing. He was a student at Potterville Middle School. Austin’s greatest passion in life was motocross. He started racing at age 8 and he won over 50 trophies. He also enjoyed hunting, and in 2006 he got the largest buck in the youth hunt. He also enjoyed fishing and being in the outdoors. Austin had a natural talent for drawing and received awards for some of his artwork. He loved BMX, working on and riding his bicycles. Austin was a funny, passionate, talented daredevil that will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
A private service will be held for Austin. The family asks that instead of flowers donations can be made to the Austin Armstrong Memorial Fund through Independent Bank.
Terry Armstrong
Terry L. Armstrong, of Charlotte, passed away at his home under the care of family and Hospice on July 23.
Terry was born in Mason on April 28, 1943, the son of Francis and Frances (Parker) Armstrong. Terry served in the military, in the U.S. Marines (Vietnam Veteran). He was past chairman of Charlotte Frontier Days, Life Member of Charlotte VFW and the American Legion, received the Charlotte Rotary Club “Community Service Award”, was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Shriners, Pony League Football, Charlotte Athletic Boosters and volunteered coaching of baseball, softball and basketball.
He was a retired Michigan National Bank Loan Officer.
Terry was preceded in death by his sisters, Delores Alleman and Patricia Sana and nephew, John Morgan. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Marilyn (Thomas) Armstrong; daughter, Teresa and (Michael) Cherry of Bridgeport, Conn.; son, Geoffrey Armstrong of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Malik, Michael and Arica; sister, Mary and (Bill) Morgan; brothers-in-law, Jerry Sana and Jerry Alleman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Diane Thomas; sister-in-law, Susan (Thomas) Clark and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service to celebrate Terry’s life was held on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church, 223 S. Washington St., Charlotte with Rev. Melvin Crowley presiding.
