J. B. Finch

J. B. Finch, 73, of Holt, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008 in Charlotte. J. B. was born October 19, 1934 in Mason, the son of James and Elenor Dell (Getter) Finch.

He retired from Spartan Asphalt in Lansing.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Agnes; second wife, Dulcie; son, Anthony; son-in-law, Larry Strawn; and sister, Virginia Finch.

He is survived by six children, Dexter (Josie Hawkins) Finch of Onondaga, J. B. (Amy) Finch, Jr. of Mason, James (Tawnya) Finch of Eaton Rapids, Agnes Strawn of Mo., Floyd (Sue) Finch of Mason, and Mae Finch of Dimondale; daughter-in-law, Sherry Finch of Holt; 17 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two step-children, James (Jan) Rakes of Mason and Twyla Simmons of Holt; and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Those desiring may make contributions to Eaton Community Hospice in memory of J. B.

Charles Fink

Charles W. Fink, 73, of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2008. Mr. Fink was born Jan. 30, 1935 in Lansing, the son of Harold and Luella (McCurdy) Fink.

Mr. Fink worked as a meat manager at one time owning his own meat processing plant in Sunfield. He was a cattle farmer for 15-20 years and enjoyed woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.

He s survived by his son, Kim Fink of Richmond, VA; daughter, Scarlett Fink (Mike Budzinski) of West Haven, CT; daughter, Kathy (Randy) King of Sarasota, FL; son, Chris (Lisa) Fink of West Haven, CT; seven grandchildren; sisters, Rebecca (Dean) Gardiner of OR and Helen (Daryl) Abby of Las Vegas, NV.

There will be no services held. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Michigan Heart Association.

Kathleen Marie Foote

Kathleen “Grama Kathie” Marie Foote, 74, of Eaton Rapids, made an unexpectedly early and no doubt enthusiastic entry into heaven on February 5, 2008. Kathie was born on January 2, 1934 in Charlotte, MI, only child of Gayle & Vera Gifford, of E.R. Mr. & Mrs. Gifford were publishers of the Eaton Rapids Journal for decades. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of many years Dr. J.B. Foote, D.D.S., (whose fillings continue to exist in the teeth of many a reader), as well as her granddaughters Carly Gayle Foote and Casey Lin Foote. Grama Kathie was well-known in her hometown as a local merchant’s daughter, a professional’s wife, a school bus driver, wrestling-Grama, active senior, and real true friend.

Kathie Foote (KMF) is survived by her three children Ed J. (Pamela) Foote, Gayle L. Betz, and Nathan E. (Peggy) Foote; grandchildren Skye E. Brooks, Alex W. Brooks, Anthony J. Foote, Zacharias Betz, Tessa C. Betz, Zoe F. Betz, Dylon Leightner and Codey Leightner; and a host of animal kids too! We will miss her very, very much – and we know you do too! The family wishes to express their heart-felt appreciation and thanks to ALL who visited with us, who attended the funeral service, who contributed to her charities, those who send flowers from near and far, and to everyone that made her life special on a day to day basis. We really do celebrate the life of a kind, generous person that gave of herself and her time for others. Kathie wanted for little more than her family, her friends, and her community! She was, and we are very proud to be E.R. folks. Even now she reminds us to be intentional in our relationships, and to cherish the time we have here together. Tell someone that you love them today. Thanks again for your love and support.

Arrangements and pre-planning for the family were handled by Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, MI. Mrs. Foote was laid to rest at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids on Saturday, February 9, 2008. Dan Forte

Dan Forte peacefully passed away on July 19, 2008. Dan was born on July 9, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York and was the son of John (Giovanni) and Rosa Colizzi Forte. Dan was the eldest of six children. Dan and his first wife, Ethel Jean (Stofflet) Forte moved to Charlotte, Michigan where he worked with his family in the candy business and then was a barber at the Circle Barber Shop from 1946 until 1975.

Dan was a semi-pro boxer as a young man and served as alderman on the Charlotte City Council. He also was a member of the Lions Club, and a life member of Charlotte Lodge #120 F&AM. He served the Christian community as Vestry member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Charlotte. Dan was one of the small committee that constructed and installed the pews and the altar in the sanctuary. His favorite hobbies were gardening and woodworking. After being widowed in 1975 he married Margaret Anne LeRoy Putman of Charlotte in 1977 and in 1988 they moved to Greenville, Michigan, until his death. He was active in the Greenville area Senior Center and the First Congregational Church.

Dan is survived by his wife, Margaret Anne; sister, Veta Souchek of Grand Rapids; brother, Pete (Janet) Forte of Charlotte; son, John (Carole) of Sylvania, Ohio; grandson, Kevin of the U.S. Virgin Islands; granddaughter, Kimberlyn of Pacific Grove, California; stepdaughters, Pam Beadle, Jan (Charles) Grundstrom, Barbara (Randall) Carpenter; step-grandchildren, Meg (Robert) Holycross, Eric Grundstrom, Sarah Grundstrom, Kathryn (Jason) Sutphen, Kristin Carpenter, Ryan Carpenter; and step-great-grandchildren Nick and Hannah Holycross; along with many special nieces and nephews.
Dan was preceded in death by his brothers, Salvatore, Sam and Joseph.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, July 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Hurst Funeral Home. Memorial service will be held at the Greenville First Congregational Church on Wednesday, July 23 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Greenville First Congregational Church. Messages of condolence may be sent via:

Justin Fossum

Justin Birger Fossum, 28, of Onondaga, passed away on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008. Justin was born on Jan. 30, 1980 in Lansing.

He graduated from Leslie High School. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid Patriots fan. He was full of life.

Justin was preceded in death by his uncle, Mike and grandfathers, Walter Miner, Bill Dubendorf and Arnt Fossum.

He is survived by his loving mother, Deborah of Onondaga; father, Birger (Pam) Fossum of Fenton; sister, Jennifer (Joel) Martinez of Stockbridge; step-sister, Andrea Carriveu; step-brother, Rusty (Kelly) Beadle; god mother, Candi Meinena; his joy was special niece, Alyssa Droscha; grandmothers, Bernice Miner, Rose Dubendorf, Kay Fossum; grandfather, Donald (Barbara) Kugel. He will also be greatly missed by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and co-workers.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main St. Perry, MI 48872. Pastor John Walworth officiated with interment following in Woodlawn Cemetery, Leslie.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Justin Fossum Memorial Fund.

Bercie Foster

Bercie S. Foster, 94, of Hastings, MI, died Saturday, June 14, 2008. Bercie was born in Montcalm County on March 1, 1914, the daughter of Don and Carrie Hinkley.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Albert Foster in 2007.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda (Jim) Firebaugh of Union Hall, VA and Karen (Jim) Serrels of Bellevue; five grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Marty Sanders officiating. Interment was at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW, Charlotte or the American Cancer Society.

Lenore Fox

Lenore Marian Fox, 84, died Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She resided in Potterville for 41 years and was currently a resident at Masonic Pathways Nursing Facility in Alma, MI. Lenore was born May 12, 1924 in Leslie, the daughter of Lyle Jones Sr. and Lillian Waters.

She was a life-time member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Jack W. Fox, Benton Twp. Fire Chief; her son, David Fox and her brother, Lyle Jones Jr.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Phil) Knapp, Suzanne (Scott) McArthur; six grandchildren, Randy (Linda) Heinze, Brad (Lyndee) Heinze, Michelle (Scott) Finkhouse, Malissa (Anthony) Russo, John (Kerry) Scutt and Steven Scutt; eight great-grandchildren, Tanner and Miya Heinze, Colin and Cameron Finkhouse, Jacob and Tyler Hartman, David Scutt and Isabella Russo; sister, MaryLou (Gordon) Overmyer and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Sunday, June 29, 2008 at East Rives Cemetery in Rives Junction, MI with Pastor Becky Morrison officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Masonic Charitable Foundation. 1200 Wright Ave. Alma, MI 48801.

Winifred Fox

Winifred Maxine (Cross) Fox, 87, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 in Eaton Rapids. Winifred was born Sept. 26, 1920 in Kalkaska County, the daughter of James Aid and Ethel Irene (Wright) Cross.

She enjoyed sewing clothes for herself and her family, working side-by-side with her husband on their farms, and was well known for her cooking, sweet smile, and soft voice.

Winifred was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, Thelma (Elger) Brooks, Ila (Guy) Worden, Fay Cross, Doris (Leonard) Bateman and Melvin (Lucinda) Cross.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Willard W. Fox; one son, Dean (Nancy) Fox of Indiana; grandson, Troy (Dawn) Fox; granddaughter, Tina (Ed) Harrington; great-grandchildren, Zachary Fox, Stefani Giebudowski, Devin and Teri Harrington; sister-in-law, Gladys Cross of Kalkaska; brother-in-law, Dale (Mary) Fox; good friend, Jackie Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will all miss her.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the kind and loving support from Maplewood Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 8, 2008 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Gabriel Costello officiating. Interment followed at Dimondale Cemetery, Dimondale.
