Mariella Hawkins
Mariella M. (Young) Hawkins, 83, of Hammond, Ind., formerly of St. Johns, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008 at St. James Hospice in Chicago Heights, Ill.
Mariella was born Dec. 28, 1924 in Clinton Co., Olive Township, and was a resident of the Eaton Rapids area until she moved to be near her family in 2005. She joined First Baptist Church of Hammond in October of 2006 and was an adopted member of the Ghana Missionary Circle.
Mariella worked for over 22 years as an accountant for Berry Construction in Lansing.
Mariella was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Robert Hawkins on May 30, 1999; and a brother, Darwood Young.
She is survived by her three daughters, Janita (Tom) Terwilliger of Crossville, Tenn., Pamela Goodfellow of Manistee, and Tamera (Randy) Unger of Grand Rapids; one son, Douglas (Connie) Goodfellow of Hammond, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Nathan (Cori), Matthew (Trish), Aaron and Timothy Goodfellow, Rebecca (Jeremy) Wilkerson, Miriam (Johnny) Zurek, Jason and Jordan (Cindy) Wicker; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at Bocken Funeral Home, Hammond (Hessville) with Dr. Roy Moffitt officiating.
Mrs. Hawkins will be buried next to her dear husband, Robert, on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008 with committal services at noon at Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Ghana Circle of First Baptist Church of Hammond, 523 Sibley, Hammond, IN 46320.

Elaine Hay
Elaine Catherine (Soules) Hay, 95, of Olivet, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008 at the Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice residence in Battle Creek. Elaine was born Feb. 21, 1913 in Battle Creek to Victor P. and Jennie V. (Bloomfield) Soules.
She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and attended Argubright Business College where she furthered her business education. She was employed by Eastman Sewing Machine Company as secretary and office manager, with the Kellogg Company as secretary in the traffic department, at Olivet College as secretary to the Dean of Admissions and at Pilot, Inc. in Battle Creek. She married Charles J. Hay on June 7, 1934 on her father’s 50th birthday. Charles preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 1995. They celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Hay was of pioneer stock of Verona in Battle Creek from the families of Soules-Stayman and Hall. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church and its women’s fellowship and at one time taught Sunday school/Bible school, was a member of the Garfield Hayday Extension, the Battle Creek Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA), a member of the Olivet College Women’s Board and its Oak Chest, the Battle Creek Friendship Club, the Olivet Senior Citizens and the AARP. She and her husband spent their winters in Crystal River and Homosassa Springs until 1993 and then came back to Michigan. Elaine liked to knit, crochet and work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed her family, church and her little dogs, Maggi and Honi and was happiest in the summer when there were family get-togethers and picnics.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, Victor Soules, Jr.
Surviving are two sons, Dennis Charles (Helen) Hay of Nashville, MI, and Jonathan James Hay of Olivet; two daughter, Jewell Catherine Potter of Olivet and Tena Jean Byrd of Battle Creek; dear friend, Hope smith of Potterville; 17 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; four nieces, Esther LaForce of Casa Grande, AZ, Mary Louise Fullerton of Richmond, MI, Vicky Zatorski of Scranton, PA and Kay Elaine Askew of Oxford, MI and two nephews, Lawrence J. Soules and Jerry Lee Rawson both of Battle Creek.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Jack Brown officiating. Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek.

Vina S. Heintzelman
Vina S. “Minnie” Heintzelman, age 84, passed away Friday, April 25, 2008. Vina was born April 27, 1923 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan the daughter of Willard and Eliza (Dawson) Worden. A long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #15, Minnie enjoyed watching baseball and followed the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs. She enjoyed going to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center for dinners and attending the jam sessions. A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend will be dearly missed by all. Vina was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Heintzelman in 1992; 1 sister, 3 brothers and 3 half brothers.
She is survived by 3 sons, Keith (Bonnie) Heintzelman of Pensacola, FL, Joel (Gay) Heintzelman of Eaton Rapids, MI, and Doug (Jan) Martin of Dimondale, MI; 8 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 11:00 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Interment will follow at Munger Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. The family will receive relatives and friends, Tuesday, April 29, 2008, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Eaton Rapids Senior Center in memory of Minnie.
Carl E. Heinz
Carl E. Heinz, 68, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
Carl was born July 18, 1939 in Mason, MI, the son of Amil and Lora (Carmer) Heinz. He grew up in Dansville, graduating in the Class of 1958. Carl retired from Oldsmobile in 1993 after 25 years of service and was a member of UAW Local 1618. He loved his grandchildren and attended all of their sporting events. Preceded in death by 3 brothers; 4 sisters; 4 brothers-in-law; and 2 sisters-in-law, Carl is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty (Penix) Heinz; 3 children, Danny ()Luanne) Heinz of Stockbridge, Teresa (Darwin) Hosking of Williamston, and Kenneth E. (Tracey Tanner) of Eaton Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Clint (Teri) & Johnny Heinz, Nicole & Leah Hosking, Jerrad, Kaylee, & Kassandra Heinz, Jacob, Jordan, & Austin Rogers; 3 sisters, Norma Honaker of TX, Mary (Ed) Hargrove of Jackson, Hilda McCollum of Jackson; and several nieces & nephews.
Funeral services were held May 24, 2008, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 3905 Clinton Rd., Jackson, MI, with interment following at Hawley Cemetery, Dansville.

Jeffrey Heinze
Jeffrey "Wolfy" S. Heinze, 52, of Potterville, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008. Mr. Heinze was born March 10, 1955, the son of Ronald and Betty (Roan) Heinze.
Jeff was the owner and operator of East Coast Drywall and has worked for Heinze TV Sales and Service. He enjoyed watching sports, playing cards and gambling. Jeff restored cars and liked to go hunting and fishing. Spending time with his friends and family were one of his favorite things. Jeff was known as the fashion icon of Potterville.
He is survived by his son, Travis (Dawn) Heinze of New Boston; grandchildren, Devin Heinze and Alexandra Marano; brother, Mike (Patty Willett) Heinze of Eaton Rapids; sister, Kathy DeGroot of Wolverine; brother, Mark (Marsha) Heinze of Lynnwood, WA. and companion, Sonja Johnson.
Funeral services were held Jan. 7, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Duane Willett officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery in Potterville.

Kathy Heinze
Kathy Heinze, of Tecumseh, Mich., died Wednesday, Otc. 15, 2008. She is survived by her husband, William Heinze, formerly of Potterville.
Marjorie Herrick
Marjorie E. Herrick, 81, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. Mrs. Herrick was born May 21, 1927 in Lansing, the daughter of Arnold and Myrtle (Shoup) Crane.
Before raising her family, she had been employed at the former Wilcox-Gay Co. in Charlotte. She was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church of Charlotte, the Maple City Chapter #218 O. E. S., the Eaton Area Senior Center and was a member of the T.O.P.S. group.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Doris Daley.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Lee J. Herrick; her son, Frank R. (Judy) Herrick of Madison Heights, MI; her daughter, Linda (Scott) Prentice of Wyoming, MI and granddaughters, Sarah and Monica Prentice.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 21, 2008 at the Peace Lutheran Church, 830 N. Cochran, Charlotte with Rev. Sarah Friesen-Carper officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Esther Hess
Esther I. Hess, 91, of Bellevue, died Nov. 23, 2008 at home. She was born June 6, 1917, the daughter of John and Lydia (Holweg) Manifold in Bismarck, North Dakota and was raised by Carl and Ann Doher.
Esther worked as a nurse's aide at Oaklawn Hospital for 39 years, retiring in 1997. She enjoyed working at Oaklawn Hospital, gardening, shopping, playing Bingo, listening to the Statler Brothers in concert, watching bullriding and horsepulling and senior dinners in Olivet. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, her dog, Chuckie and cat, Blackie.
Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde W. Hess on Feb. 28, 1998; parents, five brothers, one sister, and granddaughter, Kathy Hughes.
She is survived by her children, Janet (Jerry) Hughes of Bellevue, Clyde Hess of Bellevue, James Hess of Bellevue and Jean (Steve) Rigelman of Olivet; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Graveside services took place Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek with Pastor Don Francis, Bellevue First Baptist Church, officiating. Memorials may go to a charity of one's choice.

Larry Hester
Larry Edwin Hester, 75, of Mount Vernon Ave., Fredericktown, Ohio formerly of Bellevue, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008 at his residence with his family at his bedside. Larry was born on April 8, 1933 in Gibson City, Ill., son of Edwin “Spud” and Myrtle “Marie” (Wood) Hester and raised in Lower, Mich.
He was active in Boy Scouts, 4-H, and FFA. He lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He joined the Navy and served four years during the Korean War. He retired from the Post Office with 33 years and served in four Michigan communities as postmaster in Bedford, Bellevue, Caspian, and Hancock. He was active in Lions Club, Rotary, Conservation, Sportsman Clubs and American Legion. He sang with the Cereal City Barbershop Chorus in Battle Creek. Larry enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and leather craft.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by a brother, Stuart Hester.
Larry is survived by his wife, Verna of 52 years; sons, Karl (Cynthia) of Hyattsville, Md., and Kurt (Teresa) of Fredericktown, Ohio; sister, Helen of Bellevue; grandchildren, Hope Hester Louthan, Kurt “Bubba” Hester and Alayna Hester; great grandchildren, Dylan Hester, Isabel Louthan and Aubrey Louthan; and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was a proud member of the Knox County Joint Veterans Council Honor Guard performing at Military Funerals for deceased veterans. There will be a private flag presentation ceremony at the American Legion Post in Fredericktown, Ohio. Inurnment will be in the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan with full Military Honors at a later date.
