Joyce M. Hewitt

Joyce M. Hewitt, age 76 died Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in Traverse City. Joyce was born March 6, 1931 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Ernest Samuel and Rhea Marie (Hosler) Eckhart. She was an active member of the Robbins United Methodist church in Eaton Rapids and very much enjoyed golf and animals. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Hewitt in 1993.

She is survived by her son, Jeff Mulkey of East Lansing; 4 step-daughters, special step-daughter, Patty (Dan) Hatfield of Lansing, Debbie (Joe) Baldwin of AK, Pam (Greg) Winstone of MT, Rita (Darrell) Eversole of Crystal; 2 grandsons, Douglas and Charlie Mulkey of Eaton Rapids; 8 step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-great grandchildren; sister, F. Jean Cook of Mesick; 2 nieces, Linda Cook of Mesick, Pat (Jim) Swanson of Traverse City; 3 nephews, Gary (Cheri) Cook of Paris, MI, Ron Cook of NM, Mike (Cindy) Cook of Eaton Rapids; 1 grand niece and 1 grand nephews. Funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty DeBow officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

A special “thank you” goes to the caregivers at Grand Traverse Pavilions for their care and love. Those desiring may make contributions to the Grand Traverse Pavilions in memory of Joyce Hewitt..

Shirley Hickey

Shirley Mae Hickey, 63, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008. Shirley was born Feb. 18, 1945 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Jack and Lela King.

She was preceded in death by her brother, E.J. King; parents; grandson, Brandon Bronson; nephew, Kurtis Barney; and son, Gary Hickey.

She is survived by her companion, Robert Moore; son, Steven (Carrrie) hickey of Hollywood, FL; daughter, Traci (Duane) Borgman of Olivet; three grandchildren, Christopher (Kendra) Bayman, Jessica Clark, Matthew Clark; four great-grandchildren, Briana, Kayla, Nicole, and Aaliyah Reynolds; siblings, Mildred (Randall) Barney, Roger (Diane) King, June (Steve) Hard; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at Burlington Cemetery with Pastor Ralph Cates officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family, in care of Pray Funeral Home.

Ben K. Hiebert

Ben K. Hiebert, of Onondaga, age 76, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2008 in Eaton Rapids. Ben was born December 26, 1931 in Chinook, Montana, the son of Peter and Mary (Simko) Hiebert. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Air Force. Ben was a member of the Aurelius Baptist Church, a Michigan Historical Museum Docent, and a charter/founding member of Montainians in Michigan. He retired from G.M. as a supervisor (Mobil Equipment Maintenance) after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Bob and Bill Hiebert.

Ben is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly A. (Barry) Hiebert; children, Becky Hiebert of Onondaga, Ben (Joyce) Hiebert of Mason, Brenda (fiancé, Tom Emrick) Turner of Leslie, Bradley (Tina) Hiebert of Mason, and Bryan Hiebert of Onondaga; 4 grandchildren, Jeremy (Amy) & Brandon Turner, Harrison Hiebert and Nichole (Mike) Hiebert-Quick; 2 great granddaughters, Emersen Turner and Natalie Hiebert-Quick; sister, Betty Waid of Havre, MT; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. today at the Aurelius Baptist church, 4419 W. Barnes Rd, Mason, with interment following at Greenwood Cemetery, Aurelius. The family will receive friends and family today from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Aurelius Baptist Church.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Aurelius Baptist Church in memory of Ben Hiebert. Arrangements are by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids..

Norman Hill

Norman G. Hill, 70, of Lansing, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008. Mr. Hill was born May 17, 1937, in Charlotte, the son of Floyd and Fern (French) Hill.

He was preceded in death by his son Gary Norman Hill in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Kay (Pelletier); daughters, Karen (Leon) Shaw of Grand Ledge, Tammy Hill of Lansing and son Timothy Floyd Hill of Lansing; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Jan. 15, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Stephen Ezop officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Carole Hillard

Carole Jean Hillard, 66, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2008 at her residence surrounded by her family. Born Carole Jean Fox on Sept. 12, 1942 in Charlotte, she was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother.

Carole was an amazing woman who was devoted to her family, her many friends and her flowers. She retired from the Eaton County Court as a deputy clerk with 23 years of service. She was a graduate of Charlotte High School, class of 1960. She was an avid reader, enjoyed garage sales and was most fond of being with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Madge Reed; and mother, Lucille Fox.

Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Howard "Howdy"; two sons, Blake (Carol) and Brian (Karen); grandchildren, Brad (Bailey), Dustin (Jennie) Cody, Danny, Kyle, Jeff and Brittany (Brandon) and great-grandchildren, Corey, Hogan, Dayton and Ellie; sisters, Delores (James) Baum, JoAnn (Jack) Emery; brothers, Jim (Jane) and Gerald (Karen) Fox; several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. John Bailey of the Charlotte Church of Christ, officiating.

A special thank you for the support and prayers of so many, Carole's memory will remain with us forever!

The family suggest memorial gifts be made to Heartland Hospice, envelopes available at the funeral home.

Lynn Holton

Lynn Leo (Teddy Bear) Holton, of Sunfield, was called home to be with his loving savior on Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at the age of 57. Lynn is now happily reunited with his dad and brothers.

Lynn worked at EBI for 25 years and Lackey in Lake Odessa until their closings. Teddy Bear loved life and loved people. Once he met you, you were his friend for life.

He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin; brothers, Melvin Jr., Richard; and brother in law, James Bailiff.

Lynn is survived by his loving mother, Ina who is 101; sisters, Christine (David) VanDeventer, Joyce (Ken) England, Joan Hurlbut, and Eleanor Bailiff all of Sunfield; brother, Neil (Wilma) Holton also of Sunfield.

Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. at the Sunfield United Brethren Church, with the funeral to be held on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m., also at the church.

Memorials can be made to the family, hospice, or SUBC. The family is being served by the independent family owned funeral home in Sunfield: Rosier Funeral Home.

Ruth Hopkins

Ruth Joan Hopkins, 76, of East Lansing, passed away on April 30, 2008 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. She was born on April 29, 1932, in Detroit, to William George and Seva (Knisley) Clinton.

The third of four children, she grew up in southeast Michigan and attended Henry Ford High School in Dearborn. She married Mark Eugene Hopkins in Feb. 1949. They raised two children.

Ruth held a number of positions during her working life. As a young wife, working while her Marine husband served in the Korean War, she first sold cosmetics at the old Hudson's department store in Detroit, then sold tickets and souvenirs at Greenfield Village Museum. In the 1990s, she and her husband owned and operated a Laundromat, but most of Ruth's working years were spent as a nurse aide and dietary aide at various convalescent homes.

Ruth and Mark Hopkins moved to Florida in 1988, where they lived successively in St. Petersburg, Thonotosassa, and Wesley Chapel. After Ruth's husband passed away in 1996, she returned to Michigan, eventually moving in with her daughter and son-in-law, with whom she spent the last 10 years of an active and happy retirement.

She was a beloved member of the family, involved daily in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ruth enjoyed caring for the household pets, reading mystery/suspense novels (her favorite author was Clive Cussler), and keeping things running smoothly for her family. "Grandma," a.k.a. "Grandma Ruth," never forgot a birthday or important occasion in the lives of those she loved. She was especially devoted to animals of all kinds and made frequent contributions to animal rescue organizations. (Poodle Teea, cat Jasper, and parakeet Penny already miss her affectionate care.)

In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth was preceded in death by infant children, Jay Denison Hopkins, Norma Jean Hopkins, and Karen Lee Hopkins; and her sister, Shirley June Clinton.

Surviving are her sister, Marilyn Joyce (J. Marion) Smelser; dear brother, William Bruce (Janet) Clinton; brother-in-law, John Denison (Jean) Hopkins; daughter, Ann (C. Scott) Russell; son, Bryan Eugene (Yeong-Hee) Hopkins; grandchildren, Christopher William (Carrie) Allen, Calum Lister Matheson, Geoffrey Minh Hopkins, Christine Jean Hopkins; step-grandchildren, Christopher David Russell and Marine Private First Class Sean Charles Russell; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

Memorial services were held Friday, May 9 at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 East Grand River Ave., in East Lansing. Interment will take place at a later date at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

Christopher Lee Hoppes

Christopher Hoppes, 51, of Portland, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2008. He was born October 24, 1956, in Lansing. Hoppes was a loving son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great uncle, and the love of his girlfriend, Brenda’s life.

Surviving are his mother, Carol (Patten) Hoppes, of Portland, father, Leon Hoppes, of Eaton Rapids, daughter Krista (Dean) Staugger, of Portland, 2 grandchildren, Braydon and Elleanna Stauffer, loving girlfriend Brenda (Guilford) Harper, sister, Lynn Smith and brother-in-law, Tim of Grand Ledge, sister, Peggy English and brother-in-law, Mike of Potterville, four nephews, Shane Marsh of Lansing, Elijah English of Potterville, Brent (Dinae) Smith of Portland, Ryan (Ann Marie) Smith of Lansing, 2 nieces, Nicole English (Josh Bryzcki) of Charlotte, Stacie Smith of Detroit, 2 great nephews, Ethan and Trevor Smith of Portland and the many friends he was so blessed to have. Hoppes was preceded in death by his brother, Michael. Hoppes was a very caring and generous man, and will be missed by all whose lives to touched.

Richard Hourigan

Richard R. Hourigan, Sr., 94, of Charlotte, passed away on Oct. 14, 2008. He was born April 1, 1914, in Los Angeles, CA, to William R. and Agnes (Shaver) Hourigan and had been a Charlotte resident since 2000.

Mr. Hourigan attended Coleman Business College in Newark, NJ. He was employed at the Prudential life Insurance home office from 1937 to 1940.

He had his own Prudential Insurance Office in Newport Beach, CA, during 1940-41. He later worked in the tool design department for Douglas Aircraft, Long Beach, CA, later transferring as one of 100 employees to form a training nucleus for the Douglas Aircraft Plant at Tinker Field, Oklahoma City, OK.

His future wife, Hazel Landstrom, met Richard while both were employed by Prudential Insurance in 1934, and they were married June 19, 1943 in Newark, NJ. From 1943 to 1955, Mr. Hourigan worked for the Public Service Corp., a large New Jersey utility corp. where he was employed to investigate accidents and injuries resulting in law suits against the PSC utility and his territory encompassed Newark, Essex County, and the five NYC boroughs.

In 1955 he went to work for the Claims Department of General Accident Fire and Life Insurance Corp. of Perth, Scotland at the US home office in Philadelphia, PA .

In 1958 he was promoted and transferred as Regional Claims Manager in Chicago over all claims arising out of the company's operations in the US Steel Company in Gary, IN. Between the stint in Philadelphia and Chicago, he spent several weeks as acting branch and/or claims manager in New Orleans until the position could be filled.

He retired (the first time) on a Friday and went to work the following Monday as a regional claims supervisor for Continental Insurance Company of New Jersey handling auditing and direct home office supervision of five branch offices.

Their claims department was called Underwriters Adjustors Co. He retired (the second time) in 1983. Currently Richard holds life memberships in the Eaton Area Senior Center and the Eaton Community Hospice and is a member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church, the Eagles Aerie #3552 and the Charlotte Rotary Club.

His beloved wife of 56 years, Hazel, died in Dec. 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Richard R. (Joan) Hourigan, Jr. of Rochelle, IL and William (Barbara) Hourigan of Decatur, IL; one granddaughter, Kelly (Paulo) Belmonte of Las Vegas, NV and their children, Quentin and Sydney; two grandsons, Richard Randolph (Aimee) Hourigan III of Wilmington, NC and Austin Hourigan of Decatur, IL; special cousins, Elva and Vernon Boyles; special friend, Marcia McConnell; caregivers, Optimal Staffing Solutions, Inc. and local caregivers, Lou and Kelly Dunn and Louise Haun.

At Richard's request, his body has been donated to the MSU Willed Body Program. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Charles Jenson officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday for one hour prior to services.

Memorial contributions may go to the charity of one's choice.
