Edward Jones
Edward Leroy Jones, Sr., 86, of Bellevue died April 9, 2008 at home. He was born Feb. 25, 1922, the son of Harold D. and Gertrude H. (Schissler) Jones in Orangeville, MI.
Edward attended the College of Agriculture at Michigan State University and owned Jones Standard Service Station since 1956. Edward was a retired firefighter for Bellevue, a former member of the Bellevue Lions Club and a member of the Eaton County Bucks Club. He enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, swimming, spending time with his family and grandchildren, volunteering and helping out others.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
He is survived by his spouse, Dorothy Jones of Bellevue; his daughters, Diane (Wayne) Fetters of Milford; Laraine (Dennis) Dingman of Bellevue; son, Edward L. (Pam) Jones, Jr. of Bellevue; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Dorothy) Jones of Nashville and sister, Katherine (Robert) Richardson of Houghton Lake.
No services are scheduled. Memorial donations may be made to Bellevue Fireman's Fund.
The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
M. Helen Jones
M. Helen Jones, 89, of Charlotte, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 in Charlotte. Helen was born May 30, 1919 in Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of Andrew and Alma (Baker) Gibson.
She was a member of the Eaton Rapids Nazarene Church and a cook at Lillian’s Restaurant in Eaton Rapids for 14 years.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; son-in-law, Michael Derryberry; and grandson, Michael J. Stidham.
She is survived by four children, Mrs. Bonnie (Harry) Brown of Charlotte, Carl Ray (Marian) Mullen of California, Mrs. Roberta (Gordon) Waldron of Charlotte, Linda Derryberry of Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Frances Joppie
Frances Eleanor Joppie, 76, of Charlotte, died July 24, 2008 at the Eaton Community Hospice House. Mrs. Joppie was born May 29, 1932 in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, to Leslie and Lola (Harrison) Gould.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Joppie; children, Jim (Delsa) Joppie, John (Diana) Joppie and Angie (Greg) Parker, all of Charlotte; granddaughters, Lauren (Brian) St. John and Grace Parker, both of Charlotte; and siblings, Clela (Clifford) Shults, Patricia (Carroll) Dane, Mildred (Gary) Beebe and Stanley (Rhoda) Gould, all of Charlotte.
During her life Frances was employed by Smith's Men's Wear, Michigan Bell, Prestige, MNB, Montgomery Ward, and Wildern's Drug Store. She was an accomplished seamstress, crafting many family wedding dresses, and was a wonderful homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 28 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church with the Reverend Karen Wheat and Reverend Ken Kendall Lewis officiating. Interment will be in Sunfield Cemetery, Sunfield, Michigan. Visitation will be Saturday 3-5 and 7-9 and Sunday 2-4. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.

Margie Joppie
Margie M. "Dollie" Joppie, 104, of Vermontville, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008. Mrs. Joppie was born Oct. 14, 1903 in Barry County, MI, the daughter of James and Mary (Childs) Harvey.
Mrs. Joppie was a member of the First Congregational Church in Vermontville, Library Board, Eastern Star, Garden Club, Triangle Club and the Women's Club. She especially enjoyed visiting with friends, gardening, fishing and snowmobiling.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hugh R. Parker; second husband, Henry Joppie; granddaughter, Constance Parker; sons-in-law, Carroll Shance and John Viele; daughter-in-law, Alice Parker; stepsons, Russell Joppie and Earl Joppie; brothers, Gayle Harvey, Frank Harvey, Joe Harvey and Roy Harvey; sisters, Sarah Channell and Helen Potter and two infant siblings.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma Viele of Vermontville; son, Neil (Marlene) Parker of Santa Maria, CA; grandchildren, Larry (Phyllis) Shance, Randy (Jill) Shance, Steven (Mary Jane) Shance, and Dennis Parker; great-grandchildren, Ryan (Larissa), Wayne, Melanie, Travis and Shane Shance, Derek and Dana Parker; stepchildren, Maxine Harag, Phyllis (Emery) Fenztemaker, Robert (Fran) Joppie, Evelyn Joppie; sister-in-law, Florence Harvey; many loving and devoted nieces, nephews, step grandchildren and friends.
A celebration meal was held Sunday, June 8, 2008 at the First Congregational Church in Vermontville, followed by a memorial service with Pastor Israel Young officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Vermontville or Eaton Community Hospice.

Moris Spencer Jowett
Moris Spencer Jowett died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Sunny Brook Health Sciences Center in Toronto, Canada. Moris “Morey” was born May 28, 1925, in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, son of Arthur and Mina Jowett. The family emigrated from England to Eaton Rapids, Michigan in 1925. Morey served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He was a tail gunner with the 431 Ironquoi Bomber Squadron and received the Distinguished Flying Medal for exemplary gallantry in action. After living in Michigan most of his life Morey moved to Canada in 1998.
He is survived by a son, Jeff; and adopted daughter, Susie, two sisters, Vera Breard of Dimondale and Joan and brother-in-aw, Bob Palmer of Harbor Springs, Michigan.
A graveside service will be held at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids on Friday, June 6th at 10:30 a.m. Local arrangements are through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Evelyn May Kamp
Evelyn May Kamp of Eaton Rapids, age 84, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008 surrounded by her loving family. Evelyn was born May 13, 1923 in Williamsville, IL, the daughter of Everett Daniel and Julia Olive (Wright) Morris. Knitting, crocheting, sewing and painting were among Evelyn’s many talents. Flowers, especially roses, were something that she really loved. Evelyn was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband Robert “Bob” in 2005.
She is survived by her 4 children, Judith (Leonard, her very special, loving son-in-law) Mohre of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Lynda) Kamp Jr. of Florida, Bonnie Claffey and William Kamp both of Idlewild, MI; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; brother, Virgil Morris of Hesperia, MI; sister, Maxine Blanchard of McAllen, TX; nieces and nephews; and several brothers & sisters at the Kingdom Hall.
Memorial services were held Saturday, February 9, 2008 at the Eaton Rapids Kingdom Hall, 8972 Holmes Rd, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to either the Eaton Rapids Kingdom hall or the American Cancer Association in memory of Evelyn Kamp..
Mary Jane Kapff
Mary Jane Kapff, age 77 of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at a Grand Rapids Hospital. She was born December 27, 1930 in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of John and Rose Colgan. Mary Jane moved to Eaton Rapids with her family at the age of 5 and was raised at the VFW National Home for Children. She retired after 25 years of service with Michigan State University as a Cook, and was a member of the Eaton Rapids Congregational Church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Frederick in 1997; her daughter and husband, Diane and Chuck Cherry in 2002; brothers, John and Harold Colgan; and parents.
Surviving are her 2 sons, Martin (Dr. Robert Merliss) Kapff of Livonia, Steven (Cheryl) Kapff of Eaton Rapids; grandson, Matthew Kapff of Eaton Rapids; great grandson, Julian Kapff; 2 brothers, Robert (Marlene) Colgan of Eaton Rapids and Howard Colgan of St. Paul, MN; sister-in-law, Genese Kline of Linwood, WA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 6th at 110 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in the Rosehill Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association in memory of Mary Jane Kapff.
Kenneth Karlzen
Pastor Kenneth W. Karlzen, 72, of Charlotte, died on Saturday, June 14, 2008. Ken's battle with cancer has ended. God gave him perfect healing.
He preached the "Good News" for 40 years at various churches appointed by the West Michigan United Methodist Conference. We were all touched by his love, great Christian love.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ken Karlzen; mother, Virginia (Merchant) Karlzen and sister, Lynda Moore.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jane; loved by three wonderful children, Rebecca Bridges, Stephen Karlzen, Kathryn Karlzen-Lovejoy and their spouses, Matt, Kim and Ron. He was blessed with seven wonderful grandchildren, Samantha, Nick, Austin, Andrew, Matthew, Jack and Benjamin. Loved by his brother, John Karlzen and sister, Ginny Wray Fager.
There was a memorial service celebrating his life on June 21, 2008, at the Eaton Rapids United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, you may donate in his honor to Eaton Community Hospice or Wet Cell Lung Cancer Research, Dr. Pister, M.D. Anderson Hospital, Baylor University, Houston, Texas.

Thomas Kearney
Thomas Kearney, 58, of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008. Mr. Kearney was born Sept. 10, 1950 in Haslett. He was a heavy machine operator.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roger and Madeline Kearney and one brother, Roger Kearney.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Kearney; stepchildren, Katie Petruske, Ryan Lu, Lori Cook, Sheri Stillwell, Gus Petruske; 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
