John Loughan

John S. Loughan (Johnny Logan), of Charlotte, racing legend, passed away at age 79, after a long battle with illness. He was born on March 26, 1929, in Eaton Rapids. He passed away on Sept. 8, 2008.

He was a resident of Charlotte most of his life. He was a well-known race car driver, who raced under the name Johnny Logan. He was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. He was inducted for his diversified racing career and is named as one of the first people to drive jalopies as they evolved into modifieds and then super modifieds, which are still driven today.

Some of his career highlights include: induction into the Sandusky Speedway Hall of Fame, track champion at both Sandusky and Jackson Motor Speedways. He is the oldest member of the I.M.C.A. modifieds’ divisions to ever win a national championship which he took at Spartan Speedway in Lansing. He also won numerous championship events, including: Capital City Speedway of Lansing, Galesburg Speedway, Berlin Raceway, Crystal Speedway and Speedrome of Grand Rapids.

He spent many years traveling to Oswego, New York and Toledo, Ohio to compete up to four times per week. During this time he held a full-time job as a tool and die maker at Aluminum Extrusions for 44 years.

His children and family were very important to him and made journeys with him frequently. He always put his family first. He had an opportunity to race in the Indy 500, but turned it down because it would take him away from his family.

John also served in the United States Navy during World War II and was an accomplished private pilot.

He is survived by his wife, Karen (Trinket) Loughan; brother, Jim and sister-in-law, Norren; his five children, Dan (Deb) Loughan, Mike (Lori) Loughan, Cindy (Steve) Anthony, Kathy Loughan-Tirrell and Vill Bance. He also has 13 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

A memorial service will e held on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at 1 p.m. at Gresham United Methodist Church, 5055 Mulliken Road, Charlotte.

The family would like to thank the staff of Metron of Belding for providing all the love and care any family could dream possible. If anybody wishes to make a contribution, it is requested that it go to Mrs. Nancy Albert R.M., C/O Metron of Belding, 414 E. State Street, Belding, MI 48809. The donations will go directly to the unit that provided for his dare. Donations can also be made to Gresham United Methodist church, 5055 Mulliken Road, Charlotte, MI 48813.

John requested to be a donor for Michigan Sate University’s Medical School. His pacemaker was donated to Heart to Heart in Billings, Montana so that another life could be extended without cost to the recipient.

Arrangements were made by Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home in Belding, MI.

Ned Love

Ned Love, 85, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008. Mr. Love was born Sept. 12, 1923 in Walton Township, MI the son of Scott and Henrietta (Ely) Love.

Mr. Love worked for Oldsmobile until he retired in 1982. One of Mr. Love's favorite things was the family reunion that took place every summer. He enjoyed deer hunting with his brother-in-law in the U.P. Mr. Love enjoyed older music and gospel hymns.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene in 1982; brothers, Herbert Love, Owen Love, Jack Love; and sisters, Elanore Stampfler and Eloise Dahn.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda Watson of Charlotte and Lynette Love (Jimmy Clark) of Battle Creek, MI; two grandchildren, Dennis and Daniel Watson; sisters, Margaret Halsey of Osseo, Marie Gariety of Nashville, Charlotte Swartz of Bellevue and Phyllis (Don) Jones of Beaumont, CA and brother, Willard (Vivian) Love of Bellevue.

Graveside services were held Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Hastings Township Cemetery, Hastings MI with Reverend Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was in Hastings Township Cemetery. If desired, memorial contributions may be made out to Eaton Community Hospice.

Rose I. Love

Rose I. Love, 77, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 in Charlotte. Rose was born April 23, 1931 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Eugene and Eula Mae (Elston) Byron.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alfred, Allen and Clifford Byron; sister, Alberta Van Atter; and brother-in-law, Wallace Peters.

Rose is survived by her husband of 57 years, Glen A.; brother, James (Joyce) Byron of Eaton Rapids; two sisters, Lorena (Robert) Gillett, and Iva Jean Peters, all of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no services at this time. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Lillian Loveall

Lillian Marie Loveall, infant daughter of Steven and Erika (Gray) Loveall of Nashville, MI, died Saturday, Sept. 13. 2008 at home surrounded by her loving family. Lillian was born June 8, 2008 at Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Surviving are her parents, Steve and Erika Loveall; grandparents, Debra and Carl Loveall of Nashville, Karen and Brian Lantz of Charlotte and Shane and Jessica Gray of Union City; great-grandparents, Jerry and Kristine Haley of Charlotte, Thomas and Darlene Dempsey of Maumee, OH and Merlin and Diane Lantz of Leslie; great-great-grandparents, Mildred Griest of Charlotte and James Haley of Eaton Rapids and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Andy Shaver officiating.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family or to Sparrow Hospice Services. Envelopes will be available at the Funeral Home.

Richard Lux

Richard H. Lux, 60, of Charlotte, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at his residence after an extended illness. Dick was born May 2, 1947 in Owosso, the son of Donald L. and Dorothy (Bayley) Lux and had lived most of his life in Charlotte.

He was a 1965 Graduate of Charlotte High School and was a member of the Charlotte Church of Christ. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing poker "with the guys." He served for a time in the U. S. Marines.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Lux in 1965; stepfather, Lyle Allen in 2000; his mother, Dorothy Allen in 2001 and step brother, Bruce Allen in 2008.

Surviving are his twin brother, Robert Lux of Manistee; two sisters, Lynne (Robert) Kimmel and Barbara (Garry) Bruce both of Charlotte; step sisters, Barbara Allen of Virginia and Judy Pearson of Dunedin, FL; step sister-in-law, Kathy Allen of Spring Hill, FL and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Thursday, March 6, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with John Bailey, Minister of Charlotte Church of Christ officiating.

Memorial contributions may go to the Memory Tree Garden in Bennett Park. Envelopes available at the Funeral Home.

Phyllis Lyon

Phyllis Ann Lyon, 83, of Dearborn, died Feb. 3, 2008. She was born in Albany, NY on April 28, 1924.

Past president of Dearborn PTA. Board member of Hope Lutheran Church since 1950. Lifetime sorority member of Alpha Chi Omega.

Beloved wife of Robert for 61 years. Dear mother of Jerry, Robert (Denise), Elizabeth Geisler (Dallas), Thomas (Luann), Mary Ellen, Daniel and John (Lisa). Sister of Eunice Yancey. Also survived by 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Other survivors include sister-in-law, Frances Salisbury (Marvin) and Phyllis Haight; brother-in-law, Franklin Lyon (Janet); and Leigh Lyon (Agatha).

Funeral services were held Feb. 7, 2008 at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home, 22546 Michigan Ave. Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason.

Memorials are suggested to Hope Lutheran Church, 3640 Madison Ave., Dearborn, MI 48124.

Robert Lyon

Robert G. Lyon passed away Dec. 5, 2008. He was born May 20, 1921 in Mason, the son of Eugene and Alberta Lyon.

He was a longtime resident of Dearborn, Mich.

He graduated from Mason High School in 1939, and during World War II worked at Willow Run Airport building B-24 bombers.

In 1946, he married Phyllis Ann Lowe. She died in January 2008.

His working years were spent in the airline industry. He was a proud member of the International Association of Machinist Aerospace Engineers.

Surviving are his children, Jerry of Swartz Creek, Robert (Denise) of San Francisco, Calif.; Elizabeth (Dallas) Geisler of Louisiana, Thomas (Luann) of Taylor, Mich.; Mary Ellen of Livonia, Mich.; Daniel of San Francisco, Calif.; and John (Lisa) of College Station, Texas. He is also survived by sisters, Frances (Marvin) Salisbury of Wenache, Wash.; and Phyllis (Richard, deceased) Height of Northport, Fla.; his brother, Franklin (Janet) of Eaton Rapids; and Leigh (Agatha) of Mason.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 8, 2008 at the Dearborn Chapel of the Howe-Peterson Funeral Home. Interment was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason.

Tommy Mahon

Tommy Mahon, 64, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, March 5, 2008. Mr. Mahon was born June 4, 1943 in Charlotte, the son of Edward and Leone (Starkweather) Mahon.

Mr. Mahon worked for Leaseway where he retired after 32 years. He was a life-time member of the VFW, the Eagles and a past Commander of the American Legion Post #42. Mr. Mahon was a Saddle Bronc Professional Rodeo Rider during the first seven years of his marriage. He was a good man with a strong personality who dearly loved his grandchildren, spending time with them and sharing in their accomplishments.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Roger.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carolyn (Senko); daughters, Lisa (Don) Brundage of Charlotte, Lona Mahon of Charlotte; four grandchildren; sister, Verdetta (John) Dewey; brother, Mike (Donna) Mahon and sister, Faye (Britt) Morgan.

Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Jenson officiating.

If desired, memorial Contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House.

Kenneth Clayton Maitland

Kenneth Clayton Maitland of Eaton Rapids, age 87, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Dimondale. Kenneth was born March 31, 1920 in Jackson, MI, the son of Tracy and Cora (Abbott) Maitland. He was a veteran of WWII and retired as a Major in the Army Air Force Reserves in 1972. Ken was a member of the VFW and a member of the Moose and Elk Lodges in Houghton Lake. He retired from Clark Equipment in Jackson. At age 14 Ken played piano in bands, and later became a member of the Musicians Local in Jackson. He enjoyed playing piano professionally for the rest of his life. Preceded in death by his wife, Harriet in 1995; son, John Kunce; sister, Helen Miner; and brother, Sheridan Maitland.

Kenneth is survived by his children, Randy Maitland of Grand Rapids, Kim Maitland, Diana (Keith) Hayter of Eaton Rapids, and Ronald Kunce of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Marty DeBow officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends Tuesday for one hour prior to the service, from 12 noon until 1:00 p.m..
