Douglas Perry
Douglas Melvin Perry, 60, of Lansing, died Dec. 21, 2008. He was born July 25, 1948 in Lansing, the son of Lester S. Perry and Lucella M. Doerr-Perry and was the step-son of Evelyn Perry, all of whom have preceded him in death. Also preceding Doug in death were his grandparents George H. Perry and Charlotte M. Perry; two uncles, Melvin W. Weber and David L. Kellogg and step-sister Karen Walworth.
After graduating from Everett High School, Doug went into the military where he served as a sergeant E5 in the army during the Vietnam War from Dec. 12, 1968 through July 15, 1970. While in the service, Doug received the combat infantryman badge, Vietnam service medal, Good Conduct medal, air medal and Army commendation medal 2 Oak Leaf Cluster. After his return from Vietnam, Doug went to work at Diamon REO in Lansing until they closed. He then went to work for Lansing Oldsmobile until 1988. Doug loved to go boating and fishing and hanging out with friends at Lake Lansing Park in the summer and he especially loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Surviving are his two aunts, Ruth Kellogg and Thelma Webber, both from Lady lake, Fla.; step-sister, Margo Mikan of Lansing and close friend for 38 years, June Potter and her daughter, Bren Potter of Charlotte.
Doug will be laid to rest on Friday, June 19 at 2 p.m. in the Fort Custer National Cemetery. Officiating is Pastor Church Hatch. Arrangements were made by Burkhead-Green Funeral home in Charlotte. Memorial contributions can be made to Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte.
Joyce Perry
Joyce A. Perry, 58, of Lansing, loving mother, grandmother and sister, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2008. Born Nov. 27, 1949 in Prestonsburg, KY, to Eddie and Nora (Ratliff) George.
Mrs. Perry retired from General Motors after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Mason-Holt Fraternal Order of the Eagles-Ladies Auxiliary.
Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; and brothers, Eddie Arnold, Clifford and Charles.
She is survived by her son, Michael and granddaughter, Alana Noel; four brothers, Claude, David (Donna), Danny, and Roger; two sisters, Tammy (Pete) Gobels and Betty (Vick) Gobels; dear friends, Ruth Jones, Jan and John Decker.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing.
Phyllis Perry
Phyllis J. Perry, 78, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Oct. 11, 2008, embraced in the love of her family, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Perry was born o Oct. 2, 19030 in Rochester, Ind. to Clarence and Gladys (Boyer) Shultz.
She graduated from Rochester High School in 1948, and on May 18, 1952, married the love of her life, Carl O. Perry, who survives. Mrs. Perry was a nationally known majorette and baton twirler in the 1940s and 50s, and led many parades around the country, before marrying and raising her family.
Phyllis retired from the Pharmacy Department of Ingham Regional Medical Center, Lansing in 1991, and she and her husband spent the next several years traveling before retiring to their winter home in Texas. Her family and friends were the center of her life, and she looked forward each October to traveling to their winter home, and being with their many friends at Pleasant Valley Ranch in Mission, Texas. She enjoyed that almost as much as she looked forward to coming home again every April to see her family and friends in Michigan.
A devoted and proud wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she leaves to mourn, in addition to her husband, Carl, her children, Dennis (Skip) Perry of White Pigeon, Debbie (Steve) Quinn of Stockbridge, and Mike (Cindy) Perry of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren, David Perry, Doug (Wendy) Perry, Denny Carl (Jenny) Perry, Ryan (fiancée, Lindsey Watters) Quinn, Kelli Quinn, Jenny (Tony) Burlison, Amie (Bill) Ostrander, and Casey (Brandon) Adler; 13 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Avanelle (Gerald) Cook of Elkhart, Ind., Alice (Bill) Balmer of London Ky., Angeline (Rick) Miller of Fla., Alta Grossman of Bourbon, Ind., Alverta (Howard) Alderfer of Warsaw, Ind., Aletha (Devon) Rensberger of Rochester, Ind.; brothers-in-law, Alton (Pat) Perry of Akron, Ind., Alvin (Ann) Perry of Pierceton, Ind., John (Tammy) Perry of Warsaw, Ind.; and many nieces, nephews and beloved friends in Michigan, Indiana and Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; mother and father-in-law, Ford and Lucille Perry; brothers, Eldon and Max (Marilyn) Shultz; sister-in-law, Arlene Coleman; and her beloved great grandson, Dylan Ostrander.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main Street, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.

Thomas Peters
Reverend Thomas Peters, 77, of Potterville, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Mr. Peters was born Nov. 27, 1930 in Zion, IL, the son of Steve and Elsie (Swaney) Peters.
Mr. Peters was a Pastor who had his Masters Degree in ministry. He enjoyed the ministry, serving many mid-Michigan churches. Tom was a guidance counselor for the Grand Ledge Public Schools from 1970 to 1989. He was fortunate to have married all of his children and baptized all of his grandchildren. Mr. Peters was involved in several sports programs as a Little League Coach in both baseball and basketball and was an avid golfer. He enjoyed being a church camp counselor and was known as the duct tape king. Mr. Peters family gave him the most enjoyment in his life, he would even keep in touch with his family in Zion, IL and always attended his family reunions.
He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel in 1995 and brothers, Daniel, Ted, Jerry and Harry.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann; two sons, David (Michelle) Peters of Shepherd and Dean (Michelle) Peters of Olivet; daughter, Lauri (Martin) Hernandez of Potterville; 11 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brothers, Nicolas Peters of Zion, IL, George Peters of Wadsworth, IL, James Peters of OK and David Peters of Zion, IL; sisters, Kathryn (Ervin) Bottger of OK and Helen (Don) Banta of WI.
Family received visitors Saturday, May 3, 2008 with a memorial service following at the Grand Ledge United Methodist Church with family members officiating.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the West Michigan Conference of the United Methodist Church Camp Scholarship Fund and Forgotten Man Ministries.

D. Maurine Peterson
D. Maurine “Mike” Peterson, 94, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008 in Okemos. She was born as Dorotha Maurine MacDonald on March 22, 1914 in Charlotte, the daughter of William and Ruth (VanDewsen) MacDonald.
Maurine was known as “Mike.” She graduated from Eastern High School, Lansing, in 1937. Maurine worked at secretarial jobs (including the VFW Home in Eaton Rapids) during the 60+ years of her marriage to Roscoe while he ran his self-employed excavation business, and later was the owner of Peterson Plumbing and Heating in Eaton Rapids.
During retirement Maurine and Roscoe traveled extensively to Florida, Texas, Newfoundland, Alaska, and most of the continental United States, along with Mexico and Scotland. Retirement winters were spent in Leesburg, Fla. and summers in Eaton Rapids.
She had many talents including knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, cross-stitching, embroidery, painting, playing Bridge, and crossword puzzles. Maurine was an avid MSU Spartan and Detroit Tigers fan. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids, member of Daughters of the American Revolution, and lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Brookfield.
The family wishes to express their appreciation for the kindness and loving care of those at the Edgewood Retirement Center (Lansing) and the Ingham County Medical Care Facility (Okemos).
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe in 1994; and granddaughter, Kristen Peterson.
Maurine is survived by one daughter, Jane Peterson-Johnson of Holt; two sons, James (JoAnn) Peterson, John (Denise) Peterson, all of Okemos; four grandchildren, Timothy (Patti), Thomas (Heidi), and Tonya Rodriguez, Jens Jensen; four great grandchildren, Aaron Brack, Veronica Rodriguez, Emma Peterson, Elicia Latham-Jensen; four step-great grandchildren, Natalie, Noah, Nolan and Nathan; several nieces and nephews; and numerous members of the MacDonald Clan.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with interment following at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Ingham County Medical Care Facility in memory of Maurine Peterson.
Elly M. Peterson
Elly M. Peterson, 95, died in Grand Junction, CO on June 9, 2008. She was born in New Berlin, IL on June 5, 1914 to Maude and Dr. J.C. McMillan. She went to school in New Berlin, IL and attended William Woods College, Fulton, Missouri, and Suburban Business College in Oak Park, IL. She was married to William M. Peterson of Vandalia, IL on Oct. 11, 1935. When he entered the military in World War II, she joined the American Red Cross and spent 22 months in England, France, and Germany in a station hospital.
After the war, the Peterson's moved to Charlotte, where she did volunteer work at her congregational church and the American Red Cross until she became interested in politics. After several years as a volunteer, she went to work at the Republican State Central Committee in Lansing and went on to become party vice chairman, was the first to be assistant to the national chairman at the Republican National Committee twice, and with Liz Carpenter, of Texas, served as national co-chair of ERAmerica.
Elly maintained a strong interest in equal rights for all citizens and devoted herself to the pro-choice movement. She never wavered in her support of equality for all citizens.
She received honorary degrees from William Woods College in Fulton, MS and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI. The American Association of University Women and the Michigan Education Association awarded her honors as did the Michigan Legislature, and she was named to the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame in Lansing.
Ms. Peterson was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Peterson; her siblings, Dr. J.C. McMillan, Mary M. Richmond, Dr. Lee G. McMillan and her nephew, Park Richmond III.
She is survived by nieces, Holly Shrader of Grand Junction, CO, John W. McMillan of Brooksville, FL, Ann Hicks Murrah of Winter Park, FL, J.C. McMillan III of Medford, NJ, Mary Ann Richmond of Brick, NJ, Denise Bolman of Des Plaines, IL, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
There will be no public service at her wish. Donations in her memory may be made to the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame, 213 W. Main St., Lansing, MI 48933; the Courthouse Square Association, 100 W. Lawrence Ave., Charlotte; or local chapters of the Susan Koman Foundation for Cancer Research.
George Petrie
George John Petrie, of Sunfield, passed away peacefully Thursday, April 17, 2008 at his residence with his family at his bedside. George was born Sept. 24, 1928 in Ionia. He was the son of George Maxim and Cora Mae (Brownfield) Petrie.
On Sept. 13, 1947 George married Joyce Louise Dodge, the couple were married over 60 years. Mr. Petrie was employed with General Motors for 39 years and nine months, where he retired as a skilled trade foreman. He lived in the Sunfield area for over 63 years. His hobbies included golf, bowling, traveling, camping, and motorcycle riding.
George was preceded in death by both his parents; sisters, Pearl (Harold) DeVries, and Louise (Glenn) Sprague; son, Michael Petrie; daughter, Shirley Merithew.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Ranee (Phillip) DeMott, Marcia (Donald) Lewis, John (Kim) Petrie; grandchildren, Aaron and Doreen DeMott, Steven and Megan DeMott, Seth DeMott, Rachel DeMott, Holly Altoft and Charlie Davis, Adam and Tracie Altoft, Sarah and Jason Luce, Justin Petrie, Shala Kean, Ben Kean, Kassie Cornell, Max Merithew; great-grandchildren, Victoria, Hannah, Tyler, Micheal, Cody, Hunter, Ashley, and Gage.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Portland with Pastor Ed Filter officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Barry Co. Community Hospice, or the St. Andrew Lutheran Church in memory of Mr. George J. Petrie C/O RFH PO Box 36, Sunfield, MI 48890.
Private burial services will be held in the East Sebewa Cemetery for the immediate family.

Arline Philip
Arline J. Philip, 87, of the Bath, MI area, died Thursday, April 24, 2008. Mrs. Philip was born August 29, 1920 in Charlotte, MI the daughter of Charles and Nora (Rogers) Roiter.
Arline was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a charter member of Lakeside Chapel of Park Lake, where she was a Sunday School teacher and organist. Many will also remember her as an exceptional cook. She was currently a member of Towar-Hart Baptist Church of East Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Harold Philip, in 2004, son, Harold J. Philip, in 1974, and brother, Richard Roiter.
She is survived by her daughter, Judy (Curtis) Smith of Williamston; sons, Roger (RoseMary) Philip of Williamston and Stephen (Susan) Philip of Bath; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 26, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Ken Ridge officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte.
The family suggests those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Arline.
