Dorothy Sheffer
Dorothy Maude Sheffer, 91, of Fenton, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at
Fenton Extended Care. Mrs. Sheffer was born March 11, 1917 in Detroit, the daughter of William and Maude (Lee) Sayles.
Mrs. Sheffer had lived in Fenton for many years and was a member of the Fenton Order of the Eastern Star.
She married Leonard Hugh Sheffer in 1946 and he preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 2002.
Surviving are three children, Judith (Bob) Copeland of New York, NY, Ron Hanaford of Fenton, Kathi Chene of Fenton; three grandchildren, Errol Lange, Marisa Lange, Jeff (Susan) Hanaford; brother, Kendall (Pat) Sayles of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
Private services have been held.

Taylor Sherman
Taylor L. Sherman, 45, of Ocean Springs, Miss. died on April 13, 2008 in Biloxi, Miss.
He was employed at Gulf Hills Hotel and Conference Center since 2001, most recently as executive assistance manager. He was a self-taught gourmet cook, loved history, and loved New York.
He was preceded in death by his special friends, David Moore and Lee Coles; grandparents, Lewis and Reva Holcomb and Joseph and Henrietta Sherman.
Taylor is survived by his parents, Jim and Ruth Wilson and Richard and Lisa Sherman, all of Charlotte; his siblings, Todd Sherman (David Christy) of Costa Mesa, Calif., Eric Sherman (Kathleen Driscoll) of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. and Deanna (Michael) Peterson of Clermont, Fla.; step-siblings, Jeffrey (Teresa) Wilson of Lansing, Rod Wilson, and Janice (Barry) Webb of Knoxville, Tenn.; nieces, Jennifer Webb and Emily Webb; his faithful companion, Rusty; and his special friend, Donna Brown.
A special thanks goes to Dr. Scott Russell and the nursing staff at Biloxi Regional Hospital, Biloxi, Miss.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte.
Carrie Shilts
Carrie E. (Leavengood) Shilts, 94, of Olivet, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008 at the Christian Elder Care Adult Foster Care Home. Carrie was born Oct. 13, 1913 at Lyon Lake in Fredonia Township of Calhoun County, the daughter of Walter A. and Grace (Conley) Leavengood and had lived most of her life in the Olivet area.
She was a graduate of Olivet High School, attended Eaton County Normal and received her B.S. and M.A. Degrees from Michigan State College. She taught school in area rural schools including Section Hill School and then taught in the Bellevue School System for many years from where she retired in 1975. She loved to travel and had traveled extensively including Mexico, South America and even around the world.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry E. Shilts; sister, Ruth Heisler; brother-in-law, Elmer Heisler, Sr.; nephew, Larry Heisler and great-great-niece, Alexandra Heisler.
Surviving are one nephew, Elmer (Kendra) Heisler, Jr. of Albion; two great-nephews, Mike Heisler and Marc Heisler and five great-great-nieces, Hannah, Taylor, Carrie, Madelyn and Grace Heisler.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Jack Brown of the Olivet Congregational Church officiating. Interment was in the Clarence Center Cemetery.

Dale Shrontz
Dale L. Shrontz, 96, of Olivet, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008 at the Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall. Dale was born March 20, 1912 in Brookfield Township of Eaton County, the son of William and Mina (Fordham) Shrontz and had lived most of his life in Walton Township.
He had been employed at Aluminum Extrusions and Beach Mfg. of Charlotte and Lansing Electric Motors from where he retired. In addition, he had served nine years as sexton of Bosworth Cemetery, 12 years as Walton Township supervisor and had driven a school bus for the Olivet schools. He was a member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church, was a member and past president of the Olivet Rotary Club, a 35-year member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association and member of the Marshall Moose Lodge. He was an avid supporter of Olivet High School Athletics, enjoyed Bingo and enjoyed barbecuing chickens as fundraisers for many organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Harold, Clarence and Fay; sister, Ila Krebs and grandson, Lonnie Ripley.
Surviving are his wife of 74 years, Mildred (Goodwin) Shrontz; daughter, Joyce Ott of Charlotte; son, Duane "Pete" (Joyce) Shrontz of Marshall; three grandchildren, Lorie Horn, Douglas (Beth) Ripley and Neil (Lorie) Ott; seven great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 1, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Diane Stone officiating. Interment in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lee Center Church, Oaklawn Hospital for Dialysis services or the American Heart Association.
Trenton John Clare Shrontz
Trenton John Clare “Trent” Shrontz, 15, of Olivet died Sept. 16, 2008 at his home from injuries he received from an ATV accident.
He was born Dec. 28, 1992 in Lansing to Bradley Dean and Kristine Rebecca (Swan) Shrontz. He was a sophomore student attending Olivet High School.
Trent loved farming and was involved in all aspects of the family business, helping his father wherever he was needed. He was a member of the local 4-H Club and had shown sheep, swine and starter calves at the Calhoun County Fair. At this year’s fair, Trent had restored an old combine to compete in the Combine Derby. He was the organizer and driving force behind the Car Hockey competition that was also held at the fair. He loved to be outdoors and enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles and his quad. In this youth, he participated in junior football and wrestling leagues.
He is survived by his parents, Brad and Kris Shrontz; sister, Ashley Kay Shrontz, a student at Michigan State University; grandparents, Marvin and Diane Swan of Dansville, Dean and Esther Shrontz of Olivet; aunts, Katrina (Ray) Maurer, Karen Swan, Tamara (Marvin) Maurer; uncle, Gordon (Lori) Swan; and numerous cousins.
Services to celebrate the gift of his life were held Sept. 19 at the Olivet Congregational Church, Olivet. Interment followed in Clarence Center Cemetery.
Betty Shumaker
Betty Jane Shumaker, 82, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 10, 2008. Mrs. Shumaker was born June 11, 1925 in Muskegon, the daughter of Oliver and Minnie (Compton) Hale.
She was a very kind and compassionate person who enjoyed playing all kinds of family games.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell in 1984; sister, LaMoyne Shepard; brothers, Gaylord and Don; grandson, Jamie Lynn Wixson and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Sandra (Thomas) Wixson and Connie (Floyd) Brandt, both of Charlotte, Diana (Keith) Naylor of Eaton Rapids, Randy (Melissa Rothstein) Shumaker, Debra (Donald) Moga and Lynn Ann (Paul) Juhola all of Olivet; 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Feb. 13, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Joan V. Shumaker
Joan V. (Cornell) Shumaker, 79, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at the Mariner Health Care Center in Palmetto, FL. Joan was born March 6, 1929 in Charlotte, the daughter of Clifton and Genevieve (Clever) Cornell and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident.
She was a retired Michigan State University employee, was a life member of the Maple City Post #2406 V.F.W. Auxiliary, a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge and the Lansing Eagles.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tom Cornell on May 8, 2008.
Surviving are her husband, Gale M. Shumaker; sister-in-law, Clara Franks of Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, 2008 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte. Interment in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Lyle Skalland
Lyle Burdette Skalland, 63, of Luverne, MI, formerly of Charlotte, MI, died Monday, June 16, 2008 at Sanford Luverne Hospital, Luverne, MN. He was the son of Palmer and Avis (Shelden) Skalland and was born May 21, 1945 in Sioux Falls, SD.
He grew up there and graduated from Washington High School in 1963. Lyle attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, Augustana College in Sioux Falls and Michigan State University in East Lansing before earning his Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University in Detroit. Lyle practiced law in several communities through the years, primarily in Charlotte. He was currently in private practice in Luverne, MN.
Automobiles were always a major part of Lyle's life, whether it was racing, selling, repairing or building them. He also enjoyed working with stained glass, repairing and updating his century-old home, walking and traveling. Lyle had a giving nature and was always willing to lend a hand to others. He also loved cats and cared for many during his life. Above all, Lyle cherished spending time with his family.
Lyle was a member of the Michigan Bar Association, the Minnesota Bar Association and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Lyle was preceded in death by his father, Palmer.
Grateful for having shared his life are his best friend, Sharon Weig of Luverne, MN; his mother, Avis Skalland of Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Mark (Lynette) Skalland of Sioux Falls, Glenn (Delfina) Skalland of Long Beach, CA; two nephews, Jeff (Sandra) Skalland of Sioux Falls, Matthew Skalland of Long Beach; a niece, Victoria Skalland of Long Beach; a great-nephew and great-niece, Braeden and Brittney Skalland of Sioux Falls; Sharon's children, Monica Worrell and her children, Cody and Courtney of Aberdeen, SD, Mary Jo (Jon) Button and their children, Amanda, Margaret and Andrew of Brandon, SD, Melanie (Rich) Adcock and their children, Emily, Bridget and Ethan of Sioux Falls; his cats, Mazie Cat and Alley Cat; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held Friday, June 20 at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, SD, with burial at Split Rock Lutheran Cemetery, rural Brandon, SD.
