Marian Trombley
Marian Trombley, of Grand Ledge, passed away Dec. 18, 2008 at the age of 100. She was born Aug. 11, 1908 in Grand Ledge, daughter of Frank and Clara j(Watson) Wollpert. Marian attended the Watson School, founded by her great grandmother and later taught at the school and was a member of the Watson School Restoration. She was also a member of the Oneida Gospel Church, where she was the Sunday School Treasurer for over 40 years; Union Cemetery Society, Eaton County Farm Bureau, and a 70-year member of the Eaton County MSU Extension.
Her husband of 45 years, Clarence; sisters, Bertha Skinner and Bernace Smith; son-in-law, Carl Keyser and granddaughter, Renee Kyser predeceased her.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Bill) Spyker of Grand Ledge, Katheryn (Joe) Pore of Kalamazoo, Margaret Kyser (Bud) Schmidt of Eaton Rapids and Loretta (Bill) Gaunt of Inverness, Ill., four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Dec. 22 the Oneida Gospel Church, Grand Ledge, MI 48837, with Rev. Larry Schrauger officiating. Interment at Union Cemetery, Oneida Twp., Eaton Co.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.

John Troutman
John Edward Troutman, 62, of Eaton Rapids passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 in Lansing. John was born Dec. 27, 1946 in Punxsutawney, Penn.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart. John was employed as chief engineer at Holiday Inn Express in Okemos and was an avid fisherman.
He is survived by one daughter, Michele Troutman of Lansing; one son, Michael Hickman of Eaton Rapids; and dear friend, Michele Hickman of Grand Rapids.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Heart Association in memory of John Troutman.
Irene Trowbridge
Irene Mary Trowbridge passed away Friday, May 2, 2008 at her home at the age of 93. Irene was born Dec. 28, 1914 in Chatsworth, IL, the daughter of Louis J. and Hilda L. (Harmon) Styger.
She graduated from Woodland High School with the Class of 1932. She married Wayne Trowbridge on June 9, 1934 and was married for 43 years. She was the owner and operator of Irene's Beauty Shop in Lansing. In 1944, she gave birth to a son, Lewis. Years later she helped her son and daughter-in-law Emma run their bookstore (Reading Place) in Charlotte. She dearly liked working and met a lot of nice people. She loved to travel and made many trips to Florida. She also loved playing cards, dancing and Lawrence Welk was her favorite show. She also taught knitting and crocheting to many girls.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, on Oct. 31, 1977; and her mother and father.
Surviving are her son, Lewis (Emma) of Vermontville; granddaughter, Michelle Whitman and boyfriend (Steve) of Eaton Rapids; grandson, Mike (Deb) of Vermontville; great-grandson, Brody; and great-granddaughter due in August.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, MI with Rev. Gordon Binns officiating.

Robert Turner
Robert W. Turner, 87, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. Mr. Turner was born March 31, 1921 in Charlotte, the son of William and Zella (Shepherd) Turner.
Mr. Turner worked as a janitor for the Charlotte Public Schools then retired from the State Highway Department. He was a member of the Michigan Nut Growers Association. Mr. Turner enjoyed gardening and the outdoors, he had a nut grove, apple trees and raspberries. He loved his pets and all children were the highlight of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Thelsa; sons, David and Donald and daughter, Nancy Turner of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Richard Wilford officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ralph Vahs
Ralph C. Vahs of Olivet, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at the Christian Elder Care AFC Home, Olivet at the age of 93. He was born at home in Bellevue Township, Eaton County on Dec. 3, 1914, the son of Ralph and Fern (Palmer) Vahs.
He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1932, then went to work for Kroger in Charlotte. He married Sarah Bethel (Betty) Bradley on May 26, 1936. He worked at Dale Baum's Standard Station for a short time before buying the Standard Station in Olivet. Ralph, Betty and son Richard moved to Olivet Sept. 30, 1937.
While in Olivet, Ralph was a volunteer fireman for 30 years, Master of the Olivet Masonic Lodge #267, on the Village Council, and very active with the Olivet Congregational Church. He was a trustee and president of the Olivet State Bank, Trustee of Olivet College, Charter Member of Olivet Rotary Club, a Knight Templar, Shriner; and with Betty, a member of the Olivet Eastern Star.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Christian Vahs; daughter, Mary Susan Vahs Segar; grandson, Mark John Vahs; his beloved wife, Betty and daughter-in-law, Letty Browning Vahs.
He is survived by his son, Richard B. Vahs and wife, Ponja of Bellevue; grandson, Bradley J. Vahs and Myrna Wolter of Marshall; granddaughter, Sarah Ann (Vahs) and husband Tom Buttrick of Gaylord; great-grandson, Spencer Vahs; great-granddaughters, Page Vahs, Hilary Buttrick and Stephanie Buttrick and niece, Ann (Vahs) and husband Peter Wade of Okemos.
The family wishes to thank Jayne and Mark Voss and their staff at Christian Elder Care for their loving kindness.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 14, 2008 at the Olivet Congregational Church with Rev. Jack Brown officiating. Interment followed at the Olivet Cemetery.

Cecil Valdick
Mr. Cecil H. Valdick, 69, of Vermontville, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008 at his Vermontville home. Mr. Valdick was born in Assyria, MI on Nov. 18, 1938, the son of the late Cecil and Ammie (Tiede) Valdick.
Cecil attended Vermontville schools, graduating from Vermontville High School in 1956. He continued his education at Western Michigan University. He was the husband of Janet (Swiger) Valdick. The couple was married on Sept. 19, 1959 at the EUB church in Nashville. The couple spent their early married years together following Cecil's career in the United States Airforce which took them to several different locations throughout the United States and the world.
They returned to the Vermontville area after he retired from military service in 1977. Cecil began working at the United States Post Office in 1979 where he was instrumental in helping to develop the Bar Coding system which was used to track packages more efficiently. Cecil and Janet have been married for over 48 years.
Cecil was a member of the Nashville Baptist Church, and the American Legion - Vermontville Post. He enjoyed golfing, watching Lions football, Tigers baseball and loved Michigan State Athletics. He also loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Valdick.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; daughters, Cheryl (Terry) Pierce, Denise (John) Kent, and Brenda (Eric) Valiquette; his son, Mark (Angela) Valdick; his sister, Bonnie (Jim) Shaw; and his nine grandchildren, Samantha and Lauren Pierce, Rebecca and Jennifer Kent, Jacob, Kaitlin, and Matthew Valdick, and Logan and Megan Valiquette.
Funeral services were held at The Nashville Baptist Church on Tuesday, Feb. 5, with Pastor Lester DeGroot officiating.
Interment took place at The Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.

Jerry Van Liew
Jerry Lawrence Van Liew, 63, of Dimondale, died Saturday, April 12, 2008. Mr. Van Liew was born on May 28, 1944 in Charlotte, the son of Robert and Irene (Aseltine) Van Liew.
Mr. Van Liew graduated in 1962 from Lansing Everett High School and attended MSU. He was a season ticket holder for MSU basketball and football. He moved to Dimondale in 1970. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dimondale and previously served on the Board of Elders for a total of nine years. He also served on the Lake Michigan Presbytery Board.
He helped write the Americans with Disabilities Act in the early 1970s. He worked as a driver improvement analyst for the Secretary of State of Michigan for 33 years. He was a former member of the Easter Seals Board. Mr. Van Liew was a Moose member for 35 years, having received his Fellowship degree in 1999. He had been governor of Lansing Lodge 288 from 1997-1998 and was presently serving as District 11 President for the Michigan Moose Association.
His interests included computers, electronics and working with models. He enjoyed hunting in his early years. He loved to travel, especially on cruises. He had cruised to the Caribbean, Alaska, Panama Canal and most recently to Australia and New Zealand.
He is survived by his wife of almost 40 years, Vickie (Steele); daughter, Michelle Van Liew; father, Robert Van Liew; sister, Bonnie (Jon) Hoyt, all of Dimondale; sister, Debbie (Ron) Bruckner of Florida and brother Robert (Jackie) Van Liew, Robesonia, PA. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church of Dimondale with Rev. Sharon Zurakowski officiating. Interment was in Windsor Township Cemetery.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Moose charities or First Presbyterian Church of Dimondale.
