William Locke
William “B” Locke, 75, of Eaton Rapids died peacefully at home on Nov. 14 after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. He was born in Eaton Rapids to Clarence and Ruth Locke.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 (during the Korean War) and went aboard the Destroyer USS Warrington DD843, the type of ship he would come to love (with others to follow). After one tour, he returned to Eaton Rapids to finish his education and worked at Allied Products for several years. Bill re-enlisted in the Navy, and along with his wife and children, spent the rest of his 20 year career at various locations. The favorite was the Naval Air Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While there, he was promoted to Machinist Mate Chief and finished his military career at Great Lakes Naval Station, Ill., teaching propulsion engineering. Graduating from LCC with a degree in HVAC, he went on to work at the VA Hospital in Battle Creek for 10 years, which completed 30 years of federal service.
Most people knew Bill for his love of rocks (and his pipe, which he reluctantly gave up). All the staff at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital, who took such great care of him for many years, knew him as their beloved “rock man.” Their names are too many to mention, but the greatest is his endocrinologist, Dr. Roger Grekin. With his unending vigilance, compassion and professionalism over the last decade, Bill was able to enjoy much more of life than otherwise. Many, many thanks also go to the visiting nurses who so compassionately helped care for him, especially his RN, Joan and aide, Missy. Constantly at Bill’s side for prayer and comfort has been his beloved Chaplain, Reverend Tim Olson of First Lutheran Church, whose support has been immeasurable.
Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Terwilliger (Navy Wave).
Bill is survived by his wife, Mae; two children, son, Paul (Korina) Locke and their children, Ashley, Shane (and his little daughter Ella), and Matthew; and daughter, Sonja (Jeff) Stoner and their children, Cody, Nicholas, and Katelin; 2 brothers, Dick and Larry Locke; sister, Nadine Olney and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 17 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tim Olson officiating.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in memory of Bill Locke.
