Craig Forrest Mossholder
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” That Special Olympics oath befits our son, Craig Forrest Mossholder of Lansing, formerly of Eaton Rapids, who was born Jan. 4, 1964 and passed Dec. 14, after a lifetime of both physical and mental debilitation and challenge, at the age of 43.
To “win” is given new meaning by special needs folks. In his early days it meant to have some appetite, sleep well and have less pain. Craig learned the meaning of courage early. This never dulled his positive nature of trust in others. In later years, Craig left home to adjust to numerous Community Mental Health group homes, and new staff and friends to kids. As a big Beatles and Elvis fan, he was always eager to share his enthusiasm. Quick witted and empathetic, he gave of himself as he could best; spreading smiles.
We are so grateful for the chance to know an indomitable spirit. But also grateful to the army of good people who have eased Craig’s bumpy path, such as the Eaton Rapids school system, CMH staff and workers, the Special Olympics opportunities, the Sea Cruisers Band friendship, the Transitions North workplace, as well as family, friends and many others. So much of this crazy world is good. You could say Craig lived (as in the Beatles song, “The long and winding road”), but (unlike their “All you need is love”) Craig’s life took a great deal of work as well. Thank you and may God bless you, everyone.
Who will crack jokes with me now? Who will ask me “Mom, how are you?”
Craig is survived by his parents, Royce and Margaret “Maggi” Mossholder of Eaton Rapids; brothers, Roy (Kim) Mossholder and children, Meagan & Monica of Ft. Meyers, Fla., Brian Mossholder and children, Brandon, Kyle & Nicholas and their mother, Deb, all of Bloomfield Hills, Blake (Amy) Mossholder and children, Jacob, Casey & Madison of Mason; and uncle, Neil (Nancy) Mossholder of Ala.
He was preceded in death by his brother Mark Mossholder in 2005. Memorial services were held Tuesday, Dec. 18 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Memorial contributions may be directed to Special Olympics, Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, MI 48859, in memory of Craig Mossholder. Dear son, you were brave in the attempt. We will miss you. Go in peace at last. Always loving you – Mom, Dad and family.

She was lovingly raised by Lee and Clover Rumsey at their dairy farm in West Windsor. She loved them and had a wonderful childhood. She always considered how very fortunate she was to have such a caring family raise her as their own. She always considered herself a Rumsey and genuinely loved her sister, Ozelma.

She graduated in 1932 at age 16 from Lansing Central High School. Barbara was accepted at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, but was too young to attend; so she enrolled in Lansing Business School, completing two years in one. She accepted a position as secretary to Murray Van Wagoner, State Highway Commissioner. One of her memorable missions in that position was to escort President and Eleanor Roosevelt on their train ride through Lansing.
Barbara married A. W. Myers, the local Potterville doctor, on New Year’s Eve 1937 and moved to Potterville with Marilyn, daughter of his deceased first wife. They summered at Duck Lake until 1948 and then she and “Doc” built a home at Mullet Lake where all the members of the family visited and had great times together. She was a very accomplished aviatrix and never suffered a flying incident.

After a short while in Charlotte, she moved first to Lansing and then lived in Haslett until 2004. After her sons went to college, Barbara resumed working for the State of Michigan, specifically Senators Guy VanderJagt and Gill Bursley, Representative Remer VanTil. Barbara went with the Michigan Delegation to the World’s Fair in 1964 as part of the Michigan Committee accompanying then Governor George Romney. During that visit she had an o-opportunity to meet Arthur Godfrey and Danny Thomas as part of her hosting for Michigan. In the later years of state service, she shared responsibilities with Phyllis dell, as the personal secretary of Governor William G. Milliken.
She renewed many Capitol friendships when she moved to Lansing and Haslett and traveled extensively with her dear friend, Peg Powell, to Europe and Scandinavia. One of her favorite trips was to China just after it was opened to travelers. She continued actively golfing until she was 85 and was an expert bridge player throughout her life.
She was predeceased by her husband, A. W. “Doc” Myers; her beloved sister, Ozelma Lockwood; and stepdaughter, Marilyn Payne of Kalamazoo.
