Gerald Satterlee

Gerald P. "Sam" Satterlee, 70, of Charlotte died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007 at Ingham Regional Medical Center. Sam was born Nov. 6, 1936 in Bellevue, the son of Oren and Dortha (Bracy) Satterlee and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident.

He was a 1956 graduate of Charlotte High School and was a skilled tradesman with General Motors, retiring in 1999 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, golf and watching Detroit Lions and Michigan Wolverines football.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Zane and Denny Satterlee.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue A. (Carey) Satterlee; six children, Jerry (Renee) Satterlee of Sand Lake, Pamela Satterlee of Manistee, Frank (Terri) Satterlee of Delta Township, Dawn (Bill) Thurkettle of Dorr, James (Ellen) Satterlee of Charlotte and Jennifer Satterlee of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and three sisters, Donna Smith, Reatha Zentmyer and Marilee (Ken) Herman, all of Charlotte.

Funeral services were held Jan. 27 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Kendall Lewis officiating. Interment was in the Benton Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may go to the Ingham Regional Medical Center.

Homer Satterlee

Homer "Lynn" Satterlee, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Charlotte, passed away Feb. 19, 2007. He was born Sept. 5, 1921 in Vermontville, the only son of Esther and Glenn.

Lynn played baseball and basketball on Vermontville High School teams, from which he graduated in 1939. He married Lucile VanderVeere Aug. 5, 1944 and moved near Charlotte in 1948. Always ambitious, Lynn maintained a farm, worked full-time at the former Aluminum Extrusions in Charlotte, and was a part-time real estate agent for Stanton Realty of Vermontville. He was actively involved in the community and was a Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Vermontville. Lynn was well-known for helping at the annual Vermontville Syrup Festival Chicken Bar-B-Q, sponsored by the Vermontville Methodist Church. After 28 years of Service at Aluminum Extrusions, Lynn retired in 1983. He and Lucile sold their farm and traveled between their long-time cottage on East Lake, near Kalkaska, and their home at the Blue Jay Mobile Home Park, in Dade City, Fla. Lynn and Lucile moved to the Sundance Mobile Home Park, in Zephyrhills, Fla., where they have resided since 1995.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Esther (Cronk) Satterlee; his two half-sisters, Genevieve Barber and Dorothy Brotherton; and by his grandson, Joseph Bracy.

A loving husband, father, father-in law and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucile; son, Gary (Joy Westphal) Satterlee of Hickory Corners; daughter, Sue (Bart) Bracy of Pinckney; grandsons, Steve Satterlee of Hastings and Luke and Wade Bracy of Orlando, Fla.

A memorial service will be held at Sundance Mobile Home Park in Zephyrhills on March 8 and internment will be at the Woodlawn Township Cemetery in Vermontville.

Howard Saums

Howard Baisel Saums, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007 at the "Just A Whisper" AFC Home in Lake Leelanau, Michigan. Mr. Saums was born on Oct. 7, 1916 in Eaton County, the son of Glen and Ida (Baisel) Saums, and lived most of his adult life in the city of Charlotte.

He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1933 at age 16. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Air Force stationed in Manila in the Philippines. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service after 31 years of service. He had been employed by painters Frank Bouska & Son and assisted in painting the 1885 Eaton County Courthouse. He also had been employed as manager of the Morris Dime store and worked at Oldsmobile. While working as a mail carrier, he opened his own business selling and installing storm doors, windows and awnings.

He was a member of the V. F. W. Post #2406 and a very active member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Club and a trained Lay Speaker. He taught Sunday School and served on the Administrative Board for many years. He began his faith journey as a boy attending Center Eaton Methodist Church where he also taught Sunday School. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing, bowling and was an excellent golfer. After retirement, he was active in the community as a driver for the Adult Handicap Program and delivered Meals on Wheels.

He was a member of the V. F. W. Post #2406 and a very active member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Methodist Men's Club and a trained Lay Speaker. He is survived by two daughters, Lois (Jesse) Smith of Charlotte, Joan (David) Brown of Omena, MI; step-children, Sue Wilson of Spring Lake, MI, Mary Ross of Charlotte, Jeff (Kim) Hutchens of Fremont, MI and Don (Missy) Hutchens of Middleville, MI; three grandsons, one great-granddaughter; 23 step grandchildren; one sister, June (Ed) Fremody of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Nov. 8, 2007 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, Charlotte with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Envelopes available at the Funeral Home.

Wilma Saums

Wilma R. (Hutchens) Saums, 89, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007 at the "Just A Whisper" AFC home in Lake Leelanau, MI. Mrs. Saums was born Aug. 25, 1918 in Greenville, MI, the daughter of Elroy and Leona May (Cook) Cornell and had been a Charlotte resident since 1948.

She had been employed at Wilcox-Gay Co. , Aluminum Extrusions and at Olivet College as secretary to the Dean of Students from where she retired. She was an active member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Hutchens and a daughter, Judith Bulemore.

Surviving are, her husband, Howard B. Saums; four children, Sue Wilson of Spring Lake, MI, Mary Ross of Charlotte, John Jeffrey (Kim) Hutchens of Fremont, MI and Don (Missy) Hutchens of Middleville, MI; two step-daughters, Lois (Jesse) Saums Smith of Charlotte and Joan (David) Saums Brown of Omena, MI; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and one brother, Robert (Marge) Cornell of Lansing.

Funeral services were held Oct. 25, 2007 at the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church in Charlotte with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church. Envelopes available at the Funeral Home.

Virginia Sayles

Virginia M. Sayles, 86, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 25, 2007. Mrs. Sayles was born September 17, 1920 the daughter of Leroy and Elizabeth (Oteney) Cooper.

Mrs. Sayles worked at Boornes Tavern and American Marsh in Battle Creek, she also worked for the Charlotte Chair Factory.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Graydon in 1957.

She is survived by her brothers, Leo F. Cooper of Jonesville and Francis Cooper of Hickory Corners.

Graveside services were held on June 28, 2007 at Needmore Cemetery in Charlotte, with Reverend Rich Mitterling officiating.

Winifred Schneider

Winifred D. Schneider, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 23. Schneider was born Feb. 15, 1925 in Lansing, the daughter of Leo and Emma (Baldwin) Crall.

Schneider was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, a former member of the St. Mary Alter Society and a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved to go camping and travel all over the place with her husband Joseph, especially to California and Alaska. Schneider had lots of "friends for life" even if she had only met them once. She was especially fond of babies and children of all kinds.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Michael in 1988 and Joseph in 1982.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joseph; sons, William (Helen) Schneider of Charlotte, Patrick (Mary) Schneider of Charlotte, Robert (Karen) Schneider of Dimondale and Gerald (Teresa) Schneider of Charlotte; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Dec. 27 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Reverend Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton County Medical Care Facility Activities Department.

Lawrence Schnepp

Lawrence Lee Schnepp, 79, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, Sept. 17, 2007 at the Hospice of Lansing. He was born Feb. 20, 1928 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Leonard and Helen (Baumer) Schnepp.

Lawrence was owner and operator of Schnepp Refrigeration for over 40 years. He met Mary DeCook from Marquette through mutual friends, and they were married in 1957.

He served in the Army during the Korean War, earned a degree from Cogne Electrical School, Chicago in 1947, and was formerly an avid airplane pilot.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Mary (DeCook) Schnepp in 2006; brother, Dale; and sister, Jeanette Grimes.

Surviving are four children, Kathy (Rick) Carpenter of Eaton Rapids, Patty (Dan) Davis of Hemlock, Steven (Lori) Schnepp of Eaton Rapids, and Susan (Robert) Szedlak of Morrice; six grandchildren, Ben and Zachary Davis, Kelli, Rebecca and Joshua Schnepp, and Justin Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial with full military honors was held at the Fowler Cemetery in Aurelius Township.
