Robert L. Cooper
Robert L. Cooper, 66, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006.
Mr. Cooper was born Aug. 14, 1939 in Charlotte, the son of Clyde and Gracelynna “Sally” (Ryan) Cooper. Robert was very proud of his son, Ryan. He enjoyed being a Little League baseball coach for Ryan’s team, spending holidays with his family, and family barbecues-especially Joyce’s ribs. Mr. Cooper bowled on a league in Charlotte four times a week and became involved in a golf league the last few years. Robert worked at General Motors for 33 years.
He is survived by: son, Robert Ryan Cooper of the U.S. Air Force; sisters, Barbara (David) Lahr of Charlotte and Joyce (Bill) Gavaldon of Potterville; nephews, Jon Pell, Joe Pell, Jim Pell, Derric Harmon and Darrin Harmon; niece, Deena Mahoney; and a special Army friend, Tom Davis of Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Cooper, in 2001.
Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Phil Hobson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church or the American Cancer Society.
Ernest C. Coplin
Ernest C. “Stub” Coplin, 96, of Olivet, passed away May 4, 2006.
Coplin was born June 11, 1909 in Walton Township in Eaton County, the son of Clarence and Viola (Volland) Coplin and was a lifelong resident of the Ainger area. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In his youth, he had worked with his father, running steam engines for threshing grain throughout the area. Later he had been employed at the White Mfg. Co. in Battle Creek and at Air Way Mfg. Co. of Olivet, from where he retired. He was a founding member of the Mason Steam Club, attended Ainger Bible Church, enjoyed flying and was an avid Democrat.
Surviving are his companion, Joan Binkowski; close family friend, Marilyn Suntken; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Brood, of Ainger Bible Church, officiating.
Interment will be in the Bosworth Cemetery in Walton Township.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8, 2006 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ralph R. Cortright
Ralph R. “Chinwhiskers” Cortright, 70, of Olivet, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006.
Ralph was born Sept. 17, 1935 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Ralph and Juanita (Johnson) Cortright and had been an Olivet resident since 1948. He was a 1953 graduate of Olivet High School and had been employed in the carpenter shop at General Motors in Lansing, from where he retired in 1994. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners.
Surviving are: wife, Rosaliea (Norris) Cortright; son, Frank (Rae Jane) Cortright of Olivet; step-daughter, Rebecca (David) Vineyard of Madison, Ala.; step-son, Liam (Lara) Powell of Sevierville, Tenn.; two brothers, Kenneth (Ruth) Cortright of Eaton Rapids and Cleo Cortright of Charlotte; and two sisters, Rosalie (Edwin) Schneider of Charlotte and Juanita Brassel of Bronson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Mayn Cortright; half-brother, Roger Cortright; and half-sister, Lola Roiter.
A memorial gathering was held Feb. 16 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shrine Children’s Hospital.
Karlene Cotton
Karlene “Kay” Marie Cotton, 59, of Charlotte, passed away Feb. 3, 2006.
Kay was born March 11, 1946 in Lansing, the daughter of Francis and Martha (Hartig) Miller and had been a Charlotte resident for 40 years, coming from Haslett. She worked as an accountant for the state of Michigan for 30 years and enjoyed reading, working in her garden and needlework. Kay was the beloved wife of Melvin Cotton Sr. for 35 years.
Surviving her are: children, Melvin (Wanda) Cotton Jr., Hope (Bob) Kaye, Tonya Latham, Tod (Kim) Cotton and Matthew (Jennifer) Cotton; grandchildren, Chad, Ken, Nichole, Brittney, Samantha (Russ), Savannah, Nathaniel, Cherylee (Jack), Ashia, Dezzi, John, Robert and Kaleb; great-grandchildren, Tamika, Damion and Tyler; sister, Dixie Stahr; brothers, Roger (Alice) Miller and Doug (Teresa) Miller; and in-laws, Elizabeth (James) Wheaton, Patricia (Floyd) Burley, Lynwood (Shirley) Cotton and Shirley (Harvey) Gearhart; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Brandi Kaye Cotton.
At Karlene’s request, cremation has taken place. There were no visitation or funeral services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association, and the family encourages everyone to become an organ donor.

Bernice Coulon
Bernice (Peggy) Coulon, 90, of Eaton Rapids, died March 14, 2006 in Dimondale.
Mrs. Coulon was born in Detroit, the daughter of Joseph and Anna Zemlo. She moved to Adrian at an early age and lived there for 75 years. She moved to Mason and Eaton Rapids to be near her son several years ago. During World War II she worked for the Navy Department. Mrs. Coulon retired in 1972 as an inventory controller for Go Corp. in Adrian.
She married George C. Coulon of Adrian in 1928; he preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by: daughter-in-law, Beverly Coulon of Eaton Rapids, in 2005; two brothers, Mike and Stan Zemlo of Adrian; and one granddaughter.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Coulon of Eaton Rapids and Donald (Twyla) Coulon of Amana, Iowa; five grandchildren, Craig (Robbyn) Coulon of Noblesville, Ind., Ann (Len) Bean of East Lansing, Richard C. (Sherri) Coulon II of Atlanta, Ga., Chris (Hunt) Rettig of Aspen, Colo., and Brad (Susan) Coulon of Portland, Ore.; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in Adrian.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Berean Baptist Church, 751 Maumee, Adrian, or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Sandra A. Cowan
Sandra Anne "Sandy" Cowan, 70, of Bellevue, died Sept. 22, 2006 at the Manor of Battle Creek. She was born March 11, 1936, the daughter of Charles G. and Velma G. (Redding) Coles in Battle Creek.
Sandy graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1954, earned an Associates Degree from Kellogg Community College and attended both Western Michigan University and Michigan State University. She worked as the assistant director and director of the Eaton County Domestic Abuse Council from 1979 until 1982 and with the Bellevue Community Schools from 1986 until 1998.
Sandy was a charter member and twice past president of the Bellevue Lioness; she was a past president of the Bellevue Athletic Boosters; a Charter member of the Bellevue Community Theatre; an original member of the Bellevue Rescue Squad; a long-time active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church; and a crew member for the hot air balloon, Kandi II for six years.
She enjoyed traveling in the United States and Europe, crocheting, reading, writing, photography and spectator sports. But most of all Sandy enjoyed her family and grandchildren.
Sandy married Richard N. Cowan in March 1954. He preceded her in death in 1995 after 41 years of marriage.
She was also preceded in death by her son, Michael Cowan in 2003.
She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Cowan of Bellevue; son, Richard S. (Lorri) Cowan of Lynn Haven, Fla.; grandchildren, Autumn (Jason) Bowen of Lakeland, Fla., Patrick Daly and Logan Daly, both of Bellevue; and step-grandsons, Alax and Michael Willie.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Sept. 28 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. James W. Lothamer, officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorial donations may go to St. Ann's Catholic Church, Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or Good Samaritan Fund of Bellevue.
The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Diane L. Crall
Diane L. Crall, 56, of Charlotte, died Thursday afternoon, Aug. 24, 2006, at Eaton Community Hospice following a long illness. Mrs. Crall was born Nov. 11, 1949 in Lansing, a daughter of Clarice E. and Ellen M. (Combs) Spayd.
Surviving are four sons, Jerry (Jeannie) Crall of Charlotte, Mike (April Frisell) Crall of Rives Junction, David Crall of Lansing and Gary Crall of California; three grandchildren, Christian, Jacob and Isaac; two sisters, Marlene Kramer and Ellen Seadorf; two brothers, Don and Ricky Spayd; nieces and nephews.
Services were held Aug. 28 at Field & Leik Funeral Home, Dimondale, with Pastor Andy Croel officiating. Interment was in Gresham Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jerry, Mike and David Crall, Ryan Perritt, Robert Rey and Zach Zehender. The family would like to give special thanks to the Hettick & Graham families and Eaton Community Hospice.

John Critchlow
John H. “Jack” Critchlow, 72, of Bellevue, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006.
Jack was born Sept. 13, 1934, the son of John T. and Gladys (Tillie) Critchlow in Montgomery, Ind.
He served in the U. S. Navy and received his Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University. He was a teacher and coach for more than 30 years, retiring in 1987 from Bellevue High School.
Jack married Mary F. Carpp on Dec. 23, 1956 in Lawrence, Mich. she survives.
Also surviving are their children, David (Carmen) Critchlow of Battle Creek, Tom (Debbie) Critchlow of Olivet, Louise (Harry) Augustine of Bellevue and Tim (Suecia) Critchlow of Jacksonville, Fla.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Jack loved coaching basketball and enjoyed playing golf, researching genealogy and camping. He was active in his community as a life member of Bellevue Masonic Lodge #83, F.&A.M., the Olivet Country Club, a life member of N.E.A., M.E.A., and E.C.A.R.S.P., a member of O.E.S. #399, the Bellevue United Methodist Church and their men’s club, the American Legion #54 and the camping clubs, T.T.C.M., H.R.R.V.C. and N.C.T.
Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 17 at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, Pastor Virginia Heller, officiating. Interment followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery. Memorial donations may go to Bellevue United Methodist Church.
