Enola P. Gregory

Enola Pearl Treat Gregory, 92, of Battle Creek, died May 28, 2006 at home. She was born Aug. 16, 1913, the daughter of Ernest Osborn and Mary Ellen (Terwilliger) Treat in Maple Grove Township, Barry County.

At a young age she moved to Bellevue where she graduated from Bellevue High School in 1931. She was a former member of Bellevue Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was active in the young people's youth group (BYPU) and held office. While attending a convention in Marshall, she and three other young friends stopped at Gregory's Confectionary Ice Cream Parlor. She met Nick Gregory, who later became her husband. They were married on Oct. 14, 1934. They lived in Marshall for two years then moved to Battle Creek where her husband became partners with his brother in H. Gregory Amusement.

Enola was a 50-year member of Lakeview Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was active as Junior Choir Mother and was a member of church circles and women's sorority through the years. She also served as deaconess, held office in the circles and planned church bazaars.

In addition to the church Enola was a member of Columbia Rebekah Lodge #297, the Order of the Eastern Star #503 and served as block campaign chair for the cancer drive. She was active in the P.T.A., volunteered as a room mother, also for Lakeview mother singers, and was an assistant Campfire and den-mother for Den 7 Cub Scouts.

Enola and her husband, Nick enjoyed square dancing. They traveled to visit relatives abroad including the Greek Islands. While the children were home during the summers they traveled throughout the United States and Canada and spent time at the Fine Lake cottage. Enola loved spending time with her family especially the times at Fine Lake. She was an excellent cook and loved preparing traditional Greek meals and fish frys for large family gatherings.

Enola was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Nick Gregory in January, 1999; brothers, William A. Treat, Demress Treat, Ernest "Bill" Treat, Charles K. Treat and Clifford E. Treat; and sister, Josephine B. Blank.

She is survived by her sons, Larry (Susan) Gregory, Paul (Joanne) Gregory; daughter, M. Delores Phillip; grandchildren, Gary (Linda) Gregory, Kristi (Cris) Vocke, Michael Gregory, Paul (Annie) Gregory, Juliann Gregory-Donabedian and Chris Donabedian, Jennifer Gregory-Chadwick and Mark Chadwick, Jim (Linda) Estes, David (Jennifer) Estes, John (Kathy) Estes; great grandchildren, Lauren, Jessica and Sarah Vocke; Brandon, Hillary and Kaven Gregory; Alaina and Paul S. Gregory; Isabella and Blake Gregory-Chadwick; Morgan, Harrison, Faith and Garrett Estes; Katharine and Alexander Estes; Elizabeth, Zachary and Alexandria Donabedian; and Jacob McKendree Estes.

Enola's constant companion for over 18 years is her cat, Tinker II.

Funeral services were held June 3 at Lakeview Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Morris Anderson, officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations may go to Lakeview Baptist Church, Binder Park Zoo or Humane Society - Calhoun Area.

Lee E. Griffin

Lee E. Griffin, 72, of Olivet, died Thursday, June 22, 2006 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. He was born on April 15, 1934 in Walton Township, Eaton County, the son of Guy and Bernice (Johnson) Griffin.

Lee was a lifelong resident of the Walton Township/Olivet area. He was a retired Olivet Public School custodial employee with over 20 years of service. He was a member of the Marshall and Charlotte Moose Lodges, the Eaton Area Senior Center and enjoyed the local fairs and watching the Harness Horse races and was an avid card player.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy in 1963; his mother, Bernice in 1996; and brother Ion Griffin, in 1998.

Surviving are two brothers, Ted (Ann) Griffin of Holt and Jon (Elizabeth) Griffin of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 27 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Pastor Todd Page officiating. Interment was in Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Memorial contributions may go to the Eaton Area Senior Center or to the Olivet Band Boosters to purchase musical instruments. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Richard J. Grimes

Richard J. Grimes, 80, of Whitmore Lake, died suddenly of a heart attack at home on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2006.

Richard was born in Charlotte, the son of John and Athena Grimes. Upon completion of high school in Vestaburg, he entered the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in the Pacific. He was a life member of the VFW. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he joined the Michigan Department of Transportation working as Chief Inspector in Highway Construction, mostly in the Detroit area. He retired in 1983 after 39 years.

He married Delores Watts in 1967 and she survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Tana (Roy) Reimer, Denice Watts (Fred Zello), Jorjetta (Robert) Hermsen and Laura Quantro; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Nancy Whitaker and her family and his sister Helen Bly and her family.

Cremation has taken place and a private memorial service is planned for a future date.

Gayle A. Haddix

Gayle Ann Haddix, 71, of Charlotte went home to be with the Lord at Eaton Community Hospice Monday, March 27, 2006.

Mrs. Haddix was born Oct. 19, 1934 in Lansing, the daughter of Lawrence and Doris (Briggs) Root.

Mrs. Haddix was a wonderful cook and worked in good service at Lakewood High School for over 20 years. She was very active in her local church and helped to deliver Meals on Wheels. Gayle loved people and was a faithful and supportive friend to all. She and her husband, Richard, enjoyed traveling throughout the states. A few of their favorite places were Tueson, Ariz. and the Tetons in Wyoming.

She is survived by her husband, Richard of 54 years; daughters; Jean (Dave) Bayly of Olivet, Jeri (Bob) Leiby of Vermontville and Kim Dickinson (Scott Martis) of Charlotte; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one nephew and one niece.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Root and nephew, Wesley Root.

Funeral services were held March 30 at Evangel Christian Church, Charlotte, with Pastor William Tate officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Adrian P. Hafley

Adrian Phillip Hafley, 2, of Coldwater, died March 17, 2006 at Mott’s Children’s Hospital, Ann Arbor.

Adrian was born July 1, 2003 in Coldwater, to Brad Hafley and Casie Turpin. He was a special child who touched many hearts.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister Eva Trupin and brothers Darrian Smith and Patrick Smith, all of Bronson; grandma and grandpa, Jennie and Dean Brown of Coldwater; Grandpa Trupin of Bronson; great grandma and papa, Hary and Sandra Smith of Coldwater; and a special uncle, Willie Brown of Coldwater.

Services were held March 23 at Putnam Funeral Home, Coldwater.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Dwight E. Haines

Dwight “Pete” E., Haines, 82, of Charlotte, died Monday, July 17, 2006. Mr. Haines was born December 23, 1923 in Charlotte, the son of Claude and Daisy (Lafler) Haines.

Mr. Haines was employed with the US Postal Service for 53 years.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Merle Haines and a sister Beulah Gilman.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara; stepsons, James (Linda) Williams of Lansing and Paul B. (Kathy) Williams of Arizona; grandchildren, Andrew (Jolie) and Kimberly Williams; one great-grandchild; nephews, William C. (Carolyn) Haines of Holt, Brad (Kathy) Haines of Florida, Mark (Turid) Hines of Norway, John (Diane) Hastings and Peter (Ronnie) Haines of Gowen.

Funeral services were held July 21 at Pray Funeral home, Charlotte with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Internment was at Dutton Cemetery in Kent County.

If desired, memorials may be made to Lawerence Avenue United Methodist Church or Hayes Green Beach Hospital.

Scott A. Hall

Scott Allen Hall, of Sunfield, also of Marion, passed away Jan. 25, 2006, the infant son of Larry R. Hall and Andrea (Hildebrant) Mast.

Also surviving is his sister, Bonnie Sue Mast.

Funeral services were held Feb. 2 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Rev. Larry Fulton officiating. A spring burial will be held at East Sebewa Cemetery.

Floyd Halsey

Floyd Halsey, 90, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006. Mr. Halsey was born Feb. 29, 1916 in Eaton County, the son of Ira and Vera (Rolfe) Halsey.

Mr. Halsey was a farmer and a carpenter. He was the treasurer for Gresham School, a maple syrup producer and a member of the Chester Hunting Club. Mr. Halsey enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, dominoes, reading and training horses. He collected arrowheads and carved birds. Of all of Mr. Halsey's enjoyments his most was his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Larry Draper in 2002; two brothers and six sisters.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley; son, Gary (Lu) Halsey of Clarksdale, Miss.; daughter, Sheila Draper of Charlotte; daughter, Sharon (Harlan) Young of Charlotte; son, Larry (Judy) Halsey of Charlotte; grandchildren, Scott, Zachary, Greg, Ryan, Melissa, Vicki, Lisa, Darren, Rita Ann and Julia; great-grandchildren, Jessica, Sara, Aaron, Jamie, Greg Jr., Nicole, Kayleigh, Caleb, Karli, Shannon, Kyan, Zayne, Bailey, Madeline and Gracelan; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Edith Hutchinson, Vera Bracy, Ola (Joel) Burnett, Ila Burnett; and brothers, Robert (Rhea) Halsey and Harold (Dorothy) Halsey.

Graveside services were Oct.10 at Gresham Cemetery with Dave Burnett officiating. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Gresham United Methodist Church.

Victor H. Halsey

Victor H. Halsey, age 93, of Charlotte died May 31, 2006 at the Golden Days II AFC Home in Charlotte.

He was born Nov. 12, 1912 in Charlotte the son of Arthur and Mina (Dunlap) Halsey and was a lifelong Eaton County resident. He was a retired farmer and truck driver and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was married to Dorothy L. Southworth on Aug. 31, 1933. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2000.

Also preceding him was a brother, Charles Halsey, and a sister, Nina Newth.

He is survived by sons John (Barbara) Halsey of Yorkville, Ill. and Ronald (Martha) Halsey of Potterville; daughter, Nancy Crane of Mio; sixteen grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 3 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment was held in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet. Memorials may go to the Siren/Eaton Shelter, Charlotte.

Chris J. Hargrove

Chris James Hargrove, 46, of Charlotte, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2006 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, after a short battle with cancer.

Mr. Hargrove was born Jan. 12, 1960 in Lansing, the son of Curtis Lawson and Virginia (Schneider) Hargrove. Chris was a loving husband and father who was known as a person with a generous nature, always willing to help his friends with mechanical or building projects. He received a great sense of accomplishment as he watched his projects come to fruition. Chris worked as a supervisor in the Legislative Services Bureau at the State Capitol in Lansing for 20 years.

He is survived by: wife Adela Hargrove and children, Jason, Craig, Christopher and Joseph Hargrove, all of Charlotte, mother, Virginia Hargrove of Lansing; siblings, Helene (Carlas) Quinney of Lansing, Michael (Carol) Hargrove of Dimondale, Lynn Hargrove and fiancé Stuart Rinck of Lansing, William (Billie) Hargrove of St. Johns, Kurt (Cathy) Hargrove of Lansing, Andrew (Kim) Hargrove of Georgia, Sally (Randy) Wilkins of Lansing, Susan Hargrove of Lansing and Eric (Leah) Hargrove of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Curtis Hargrove.

Funeral services were held Feb. 15 at Assembly of God Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery. The family extends a special thank you to Sparrow Hospital for the wonderful care Chris received from everyone during his stay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family for his children’s scholarship fund. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
