David D. Hoedeman
David D. Hoedeman, 67, of Mason, died April 15, 2006. He was born March 8, 1939 in Kansas City, MO.
David belonged to all of the local Masonic Lodges for over 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce; sons, Michael (Kathy), Matthew (Karen), Marcus (Robin); grandchildren, Jessica, Bradley, Jason and Patrick; and brother by choice, Rodney Rodgers.
Funeral services were held April 18 at Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, Mason, with Dale Ruttan officiating. Interment will be held in Hawley Cemetery, Mason.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Lansing City Rescue Mission, 607 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912 in memory of Mr. David Hoedeman.
Marie Annette Holcomb
Marie A. (Boatman) Holcomb, age 64 of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, February 8, 2006 in Lansing. She was born July 7, 1941 to Floyd Wendall and Mildred (Marquardt) Boatman.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, John Holcomb; 2 daughters, Melissa (Eric) Hillman of Novi and JoLynn Holcomb of Lansing; brother, Larry (Sue) Boatman of Clarkston and nephew, Sean Boatman of Eaton Rapids.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 11, 2006 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Marie A. Holcomb.
Chester James Holley
Chester James Holley of Eaton Rapids crossed over to the care of our Lord on May 1, 2006 at the age of 86. Born in Jackson, MI on August 26, 1919, Mr. Holley has been an Eaton Rapids resident since 1940. He served his country from May 6, 1944 to March 21, 1946 during WWII as a Tech 5th Grade Medical Airman. He was stationed in Germany in the 310th Field Artillery Battalion Medical Detachment. Chester retired from Motor Wheel after 32 years and was a member of the Griffith United Methodist Church and the Eaton Rapids Senior Center. He spent much of retirement traveling and tending to the care and feeding of wild life at their home on the Grand River.
Sharing in his departure are his loving wife of the past 11 years, Mildred (Larson) Holley of Eaton Rapids; his children, Larry (Judy) Holley of Eaton Rapids, Gerald Holley of Battle Creek and Donald Holley of Eaton Rapids; his step-children, Lester (Mary) Holley of South Carolina, Patricia Holley of Holt, Vicki (Jerry) Reed of Nashville, Rhonda (Rod) Pressley of South Carolina and Cindy (Mike) Miller of Charlotte; his 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ottmar (Donna) Holley of Eaton Rapids, Lester (Martha) Holley of Eaton Rapids and Harry (Lois) Holley of California. Chester was preceded in death by his first loving wife of 53 years, Marion (Peckham) Holley, his parents, Lester and Bessie Holley and siblings, Ronal Holley, Florence Vincent, George Holley and granddaughter, Mindy Reed.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2006 at the Griffith United Methodist Church, 9537 S. Clinton Trail, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Jack Fugate officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Wednesday and Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Griffith United Methodist Church Building Fund or SIREN/Eaton Shelter, 245 S. Cochran, Charlotte, in memory of Chester Holley.
Lester Benjamin Holley
Lester Benjamin Holley, age 78, of Eaton Rapids died Sunday, December 24, 2006 at the Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte. He was born September 24, 1928 in Stockbridge the son of Lester B. Sr. and Bessie I. (Best) Holley. Les was the Transportation Supervisor for the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, serving for over 37 years and was an honorary life member of the V.F.W. National Home. Following retirement Les and daughter Diane opened and operated Plains Road Small Engine Repair. Les was a motorcycle enthusiast and was always willing to help those with mechanical problems with their cycles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Bessie; granddaughter, Mindy Reed; grandson, Chad Schwartz; daughter-in-law, Sherry Schwartz; sister, Florence Vincent; 3 brothers Ronal, George and Chester Holley.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Martha; 15 children, Lester “Butch” (Mary) Holley III, Patti Holley, Joyce (Dan) Doxtader, Vicki (Jerry) Reed, Cyril Schwartz, Rhonda (Rod) Pressley, Juanita (Buck) Helfer, Cindy (Mike) Miller, Mike Schwartz, Joe Schwartz, Joan (James) Lester, Janice Schwartz, Christine (Steve) Goddard, Diane Schwartz and April (Jay) Frost; 31 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ottmar (Donna) Holley and Harry (Lois) Holley and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was held December 28, 2006 from St. Peter Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Ben Constantine as celebrant. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery in Aurelius Township. Roseann M. Holmgren
Roseann M. (Troutner) Holmgren, of Charlotte, died at home Monday, Jan. 15, 2006.
Mrs. Holmgren was born July 18, 1943 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Max and Virginia (McDonald) Troutner. Roseann and Carl were married June 1, 1963 in Battle Creek. She was employed by Eaton County as a supervisor until she retired due to ill health. She enjoyed her family, shopping and bowling, which she spent many years doing.
She is survived by: her husband, Carl; son, Carl Holmgren III of Charlotte; daughter, Carla Newland of Charlotte; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren; brothers, Herbert Troutner of Port Huron and Mac Troutner of Bellevue.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; step-father, Carleton Jones; and a sister, Neva L. Copenhaver.
Funeral services were held Jan. 18 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Chuck Jenson officiating. Intrement was at Hick’s Cemetery in Pennfield Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Melvin Holton Jr.
Melvin L. Holton Jr., 71, of Sunfield, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2006 at Ingham Medical Hospital after a long illness.
Melvin was born at home March 18, 1934 in Sunfield, the son of Melvin C. and Ina L. (Barnum) Holton. He graduated May 13, 1953 from Sunfield High School and entered into the U.S. Army in June of 1953. On March 17, 1956 he married Marilyn Stall.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lou Ann Holton, in 1970, and his father, Melvin C. Holton, in 1993.
He is survived by: son, Randy (Mary Jo) of Nashville; grandson, Randy, and great-grandson, Tyler, of Eaton Rapids; mother, Ina Holton; two brothers, Lynn and Neil (Wilma); four sisters, Christine (David) Van Deventer, Joyce (Ken) England, Joan (Dick) Hurlbut and Eleanor (Jim) Bailiff, all of Sunfield; many nieces and nephews; aunt, Alta Vaugn; and cousin, Dale Williams of Ypsilanti.
Funeral services were held March 7 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, in Sunfield.
Lyn D. Hopkins
Lyn D. Hopkins, 45, of Marshall, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at University of Michigan Hospital. She was born Dec. 20, 1960 in Milton, Fla. to David L. and Janet Kay (Humphrey) Snyder.
Lyn was a 1979 graduate of Albion High School. She was an assistant manager at Record Town in Battle Creek and Grand Rapids. She was a former employee of Walker Manufacturing in Marshall and tended bars in Parma. Lyn was a member of a support group called Primary Pulmonary Hypertension Organization and a former member of the Moose Lodge. She enjoyed gardening and painting on wood and glass. She sold many of her art works.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kayla Hopkins.
Survivors include daughters: Kiersten Hopkins of Marshall and Corrinne Hopkins of Marshall; mother: Janet (Allen) Albert of Charlotte; father: David L. (Virginia) Snyder of Albion; grandmother: Wilma Snyder of Albion; sisters: LeAnn Wilder of Albion and Carrie Rumler of Albion; brother: Marc Snyder of St. Johns; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held July 10 at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, with Father Edward Scully officiating. Interment followed at Albion Memory Gardens.
Memorials are suggested to the family for her children.
Patrick Neal Horner
Patrick Neal Horner “Pat the Rat,” age 62, of Eaton Rapids and formerly of Lansing died Friday, October 6, 2006. He was born on October 18, 1943 in Los Angeles, CA, the son of Robert and Pauline Root. Pat was an Eastern High School graduate, class of 1963 and served with the 101 Airborne during Viet Nam. He retired in 2003 from General Motors, Fisher Body Division and was a member of the U.A.W. local #602. Pat enjoyed fishing, classic car restoration, NASCAR, landscaping and was a big Spartan Football fan. Preceding him in death were his parents and son, Tony Earl Horner in 1995.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate of 36 years, Polly; 2 children, Patrick (Jane) Horner Jr. of Grand Rapids, Tonja (Kevin) Lewis of Lansing; daughter-in-law, Shelly Horner of Lansing; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter; several other family members and many friends including special friend Lori Strauss.
Funeral services will be today at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in the Rosehill Cemetery.
Marie B. Horvath
Marie B. Horvath, 88, of Owosso, passed away Sunday, Dec. 25, 2005 at Memorial Healthcare.
Mrs. Horvath retired from Memorial Healthcare in 1986 and had previously worked at Universal Electric Co.
Marie was born Feb. 2, 1917 in Caledonia Township, the daughter of Stephen and Pauline (Pavlu) Zwolensky. On Aug. 1, 1936, she married Julius Joseph Horvath at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Owosso; he passed away Jan. 19, 1985. She attended schools in Hazelton Township and received her GED from Owosso Public Schools. She resided all her married life in Owosso.
Marie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she was a former member of the choir. She was a member of the Altar Society, as well as First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, for which she served as an auditor and financial secretary for 57 years. She also volunteered at St. Joseph Catholic School at the school lunches.
Survivors include: daughters, Virginia Phillips of Owosso and Anita (Tom) Brown of Owosso; sons, Philip (Linda) Horvath of Naperville, Ill., and Ronald Horvath of Charlotte; daughter, Mary (William) Hass of Owosso; grandson, Mark Brown; granddaughters, Tina (Marty) Ellis and Julie (Dean) Johnson; grandsons, Jeff Brown, Andrew (Rachel) Phillips and Justin Horvath; granddaughter, Jessica (Michael) Brock; grandsons, Philip Horvath and William Hass; great-granddaughters, Morgan Ellis and Sarah Brown; brothers, Stephen (Glenna) Zwolensky, Richard (June) Zwolensky and Anthony Zwolensky; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Morene Horvath; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by: husband, Julius; brothers, Edward, John, Louis, Joseph, Ervin and Donald; sisters, Valeria, Catherine and Elizabeth; and son-in-law, Jerry Phillips.
Services have been held. Interment was at St. Paul Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul or the Arthritis Foundation. Arrangements were by Jennings-Lyons Chapel in Owosso.
