Pauline B. Hough
Wrapped in the soft cotton folds of her patchwork quilt, our beloved wife, mother, grandma, aunt and friend, Pauline Barbara (Reahm) Hough, smiled and quietly slipped away from this earth and into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 22, 2006. Her parents, Essie and Fred Reahm, her siblings, Carl, Duane, Kendall, Merwood, Idah, and her daughter, Carol met her at the Gates of Glory. What a fantastic reunion there must have been as they strolled through heaven.
Pauline lived in Sunfield for her entire life. The third of six children, she was born Jan. 13, 1915 into a loving farm family. Pauline invited Jesus into her heart at the age of eight at a children's meeting at the Sebewa Campgrounds. The Lord gained a faithful, long-term servant that day. At age 15, Pauline began playing piano for Halladay United Brethren Church. She continued playing for many functions as pianist and organist for 63 years.
Pauline became a love and respected teacher in the Sunfield area, beginning her career as a Sunday School teacher at age 15. In 1923, Pauline completed County Normal and became an 18-year-old country school teacher. She began her career in the one room Goddard School and then moved to Magden School. She finished her teaching career at Sunfield Elementary in 1977 after 35 years of teaching. Pauline's research into the Figg family's genealogy found that she was the fifth generation of that family to teach. She passed the ability to her daughters and granddaughters, making Karin and Amy the seventh generation.
In 1935 she married her handsome sweetheart, Roy Hough. They lived, worked and played together for 71 years. Together they raised their two daughters, Marilee Jeanne (Larry Steward) of Sunfield and Dr. Carol Janice (Tom Winters) of Grand Rapids.
Four grandchildren, Kevin Edward (Tricia) Steward of Grand Ledge, Karin Lynne Steward (Ronnie) Raymond of Sunfield, Amy Hough Winters (Merl) Seifken of Grand Rapids and John Thomas Winters of Grand Rapids survive their "Gram" Pauline. She felt it was important to spend time enjoying and guiding her grandchildren, giving them a loving Christian example to follow.
In time, Pauline was blessed with five great-grandchildren, Jacob and Josh Seifken, Dylan and Jolena Steward and Ashleigh Raymond. Grandma Hough-Hough was often heard saying how pleased she was to have been able to know each of them, and they are richer for knowing her.
The visitation was held in the Sanctuary of Sunfield United Brethren Church July 26. A celebration of Pauline's life was held July 27 at Sunfield United Brethren Church. The Committal Service was held at Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa. A fellowship time followed at the church.
Memorial donations will be sent to Laurel Missions in Big Laurel, Ken.
