Paulita Marie Louise (Letts) Lucky
Paulita Marie Loiuse (Letts) Lucky of Eaton Rapids, age 59, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2006. Paulita was born February 28, 1947. She was a semi-truck driver, loved horses and bingo.

James Maatsch
James T. Maatsch, 70, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006. James was born October 15, 1935, in Durand, Michigan, the son of Thurlow and Margaret Maatsch. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University and his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Michigan. Early in his career he served as Assistant Prosecutor of Eaton County from 1963 to 1965. He was a member of the Eaton and Ingham County Bar Associations; the State Bar Association of Michigan (member, Public Corporation and Labor Law Relation Sections), American Bar Association, and National Council of School Attorneys. He was selected as President of the Michigan Council of School Attorneys and served as a member of its Board of Directors. Also, he was President of the National Council of School Attorneys and served as a member of its Board of Directors. He was instrumental in helping other states to form organizations of school attorneys. He successfully litigated before the Michigan Supreme Court the case that established the standards to judge teacher competency under the Tenure Act. Thirty-plus years later, this case remains good law today. He participated significantly in the development of agency and appellate case law in the area of public employee collective bargaining under the Public Employment Relations Act. Mr. Maatsch was regarded by all of the many persons he worked with, both labor and management, as a person of integrity who always conducted himself with civility and respect for others.
He was a member of Rotary, Eaton County Shriners (serving as President), and the Masons. For the last 20 years he was a member of the Hayes Green Beach Hospital Board, serving in many roles, including Vice-Chairman and most recently, as Chairman. During this time, he led the development effort for “Project 2000,” raising more than $2,000,000 locally toward the project. He was instrumental in leading “Imagine HGB,” a $14,000,000 renovation of the hospital and a $3,000,000 office building. Recognized for his work with HGB, he was selected to be a member of the QHR Advisory Board, an advisory panel comprised of 25 Trustees that provides feedback and guidance to more than 200 hospital facilities nationwide. He was a founding member of the Eaton County Courthouse Square Association, and held numerous offices in his church. He enjoyed family time, reading, the outdoors, hunting, skiing and golf. Always an avid fisherman, he organized many fishing trips to Canada for friends and family. He was a long time member of both the Charlotte Country Club (serving on the Board) and Yacht Club. Even though he attended MSU and U of M, there was no doubt his loyalties were green in nature. He was an enthusiastic MSU fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games and could often be seen tailgating with friends under the Spartan flag flown from the top of the RV. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, family and friends. As recently as last week, the family gathered together in Kansas to celebrate a granddaughter’s 12th birthday and spend time with all of his children and grandchildren. A compassionate, caring, giving and beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, he is survived by his wife Sandra; son James T. Maatsch II; daughter Melinda “Cricket” (Matt) Hairford; grandchildren Audrey and Jack Maatsch and Sasha and Sadie Hairford; and his sisters, Jean (Robert) Hogle, Judie (Duane) Marlan, Sister-in-Law, Rose Marie Maatsch, and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dr. Jack L. Maatsch. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, at the First Congregational Church UCC, (106 S. Bostwick) Charlotte, with Rev. Phil Hobson officiating. Internment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Frances Madry
Frances Madry, 78, passed away peacefully Jan. 10, 2006.
Frances was born Nov. 1, 1927 in Detroit. Her family moved to Charlotte from Detroit in 1928, settling on a farm north of town. Playing piano and cornet in Art Stewards Stardusters and two local polka bands during the 1940s was an adventurous time of her life. She also shared her gift of music by teaching children piano through the years. On May 26, 1951 she married Louis Madry and they shared a wonderful life together. She worked at the Fred A. Richey store for 11 years until they moved to the farm in 1957. Fran attended St. Mary Catholic Church and was the church organist and choir director for 53 years. She also played organ at St. Ann’s in Bellevue. Fran was a member of the St. Mary School Board, and Parish Council, and was a past president of the Altar Society. She worked tirelessly on St. Mary School and Church events, even serving as a school bus driver. Fran graduated from Charlotte High School in 1945 and has been secretary-treasurer of the CHS Alumni Association for many years. She was also on the Maple Hill Cemetery Board, Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and managed the HGB Gift Basket. Fran was a wonderful caregiver, always looking after her family and friends.
Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Louis, in September of 2000.
She is survived by: daughter, Mary Catherine (Glenn E.) Shook of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Joseph Nelson (Jennifer) Shook, Glenn Louis Shook; sisters, Mary (Don) Wadsten of Southfield and Anne (Jerry) Kent of Nashville; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass was held Jan. 13 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis R. Spitzley officiating. Interment followed at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton community Hospice, St. Mary Catholic Church or Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Dorothea M. Maggard
Dorothea M. Maggard, 72, of Charlotte, died Friday, March 17, 2006.
Mrs. Maggard was born May 28, 1933 in Lansing, the daughter of James and Pearl (Christianson) Trahair. She was a very quiet, hard-working lady, and a wonderful seamstress. She enjoyed quilting and quilt shows, arts and crafts, and watching the Lifetime Channel.
She is survived by: children, Rosanne (Harland) Elliott of Charlotte, Johnny Powers of Tennessee, James (Elaine) Powers of Fremont and Jeffery Powers of Florida; grandchildren, Chad, C.J., Brandy, Billy Jo, J.R., Angela and Michael; and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Marlene Rood.
Funeral services were held March 21 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating.

Patsy J. Mahar
Patsy Jean Mahar, 73, of Lake Leelanau, died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006 at her home.
She was born Dec. 7, 1932 in Grand Blanc, the daughter of John and Garnet (Packer) Firestone. On Oct. 18, 1952, in Nashville, she married Thomas Eugene Mahar, who survives. As a loving wife and mother, her whole life revolved around caring for and nurturing her children and husband. Patsy played organ at St. Cyril’s of Nashville, and was a seamstress for 10 years. After moving to Lake Leelanau, she was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Parish, where she played organ for 30 years. She also worked at the fabric store in Lake Leelanau.
She is survived by: her spouse; six children, Kathryn (Bill) Smith of Farmington Hills, Marilyn (Curtis) Crow of Traverse City, Annette (David) Andres of Traverse City, Patrick (Carol ) Mahar of Interlochen, Karen (Derek) Botfield of Portage and Matthew (Ashley) Mahar of Clarksville, Tenn.; sisters, Betty (Charles) Miller of Traverse City and Ellen (Fred) Sharp of Clio; half-sisters, Linda (Gail) Brovont of Hudsonville and Carol (Ralph) Vogan of West Branch; half-brother, Gary (Leota) Firestone of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Patsy was preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara; son, Thomas; and grandson, Michael Mahar.
Services were held in Lake Leelanau. A graveside service and burial will be held in Hastings in the spring.

Doris M. Makley-Scott
Doris Mae (Rogers) Makley-Scott, 91, died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006 in Charlotte.
She was born Aug. 7, 1914 in Eaton County, where she resided her entire life. Mrs. Makley-Scott was a farmer’s wife who drove a school bus and worked in the cafeteria for the Maple Valley School District.
She was preceded in death by: her parents, Myron and Lois (Garber) Rogers; husband, Blake Makley, to whom she was married 49 years before his death in 1979; sisters, Elaine Rogers and Beverly Rogers Dies; brother, Forrest Rogers; granddaughter, Christine Upright; second husband, Earl Scott; and son-in-law, Fay Upright.
Surviving are: five daughters, Judy (Dennis) Gordeneer of Charlotte, Nona Upright of Charlotte, Joyce (Robert) Blake of Nashville, Lois (Richard) Myers of Vermontville and Jerrie (Dan) Drewyor of Huntsville, Ark.; step-daughter, Karen Wood and family; and step-son, Chris Scott and family; 11 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; sister, Ethel Dickinson of Charlotte; and a brother, Durwood (Marilyn) Rogers of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held March 2 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Robert Clinton officiating. Interment was at Freemire Cemetery in Vermontville.

Mary Alleen Malcuit
Mary Alleen Malcuit, 79, of Vermontville, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006. Mrs. Malcuit was born Jan. 15, 1927, in Charlotte, the daughter of Frank and Dona (Spencer) King.
She and her husband, Leo, were proud of the farm they developed and of their family. They were members of the Maple Syrup Association. Mrs. Malcuit was an antique collector and dealer through her business "Four Leaf Clover Antiques."
She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Malcuit in 2005.
She is survived by her sons, Mark Malcuit of Mulliken and Joel Malcuit of Vermontville; grandchildren, Marcie (Logan) Southfield of Coldwater, Travis and Lucas Malcuit of Charlotte and Dylan Malcuit of Mulliken; and great-grandson, Brady Matthew Southfield.
Funeral services were held Dec. 20 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Tim Olson officiating. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Siren Eaton Shelter, Charlotte. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Michael R. Malerba III
Michael Robert Malerba III, 28, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006.
Mr. Malerba was born Aug. 30, 1977 in Lansing the son of Michael and Doretta Malerba II. He was a line worker at Peckham Vocational and a bottle clerk at Felpausch X-Press. He was active in Special Olympics of Michigan Area 8 and the Wednesday Morning Risers bowling league at Char-Lanes.
He is survived by: his mother, Doretta Malerba and Mike Cathcart of Charlotte; sisters, Marci (Jerry) Malerba-Kohler and Melissa (Bryan) Foster, both of Charlotte; special friend, Angie Pickett; grandmother, Jackie Pruden; nephews, Blake Malerba, Bryson Foster, Carson Kohler and Bronx Foster; niece, Kyarra Foster; godparents, Brian and Annette Davis; guardian angel, Linda Zarebski; House of Ruth brothers, Matt, David, Kyle, Sean and Mike; and numerous friends and family.
He was preceded in death by; his father, Michael Malerba II; and grandparents, Roger Pruden, Dorothy Pruden, Michael Malerba I and Marion Malerba.
Funeral services were held Jan 18 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Charlotte, with Father Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. A Family Affirmation Service was held Jan. 17 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
