Maureen E. Malone

Maureen "Marti" E. Malone, 63, of Bellevue died Sunday, July 23, 2006. Mrs. Malone was born June 20, 1943 in Baltimore, Md. the daughter of Morris and Elizabeth (Trembath) DePuy.

Mrs. Malone was a homemaker and a great mother who loved canning and fried chicken.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, William; sons, Thomas Swarmes of Kalamazoo, Todd Swarmes of Gline, Michael Swarmes of Paw Paw, Timothy Swarms of Battle Creek; 28 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and William Malone, Jr. of Bellevue and brother, Morris DePuy of Nashville, Tenn.

Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Robert D. Marple

Robert Dale Marple, 69, of Charlotte, died Saturday, July 29, 2006, in Vail, Colo. Mr. Marple was born Oct. 8, 1936, in Charlotte the son of Dorance and June (Roberts) Marple.

Bob loved his family and friends unconditionally. He enjoyed golf and just being with people. He retired from Owens Illinois-Brockway Glass Containers in Charlotte then worked for the Charlotte Meijer Store and retired in June 2006.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Michelle Marple in 2000.

He is survived by son, Matt (Jill) Marple and twin grandchildren Hailey and Gage Marple of Avon, Colorado; step-children, Amber and Alex; mother-in-law Margaret Graham; sisters, Elaine (Norm) Milbourn, Joyce (Bill) Scott; brothers, Don (Pat) Marple and Ken Marple; brothers-in-law Darian Graham, Kal (Tiera) Graham; sisters-in-law Alicia (Don) Haynes, and Terrie Ramsey and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Wednesday, Aug. 23 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Kathy Smith officiating.

Velma L. Marsh

Velma Lovina Marsh, age 80, of Mulliken, died Saturday, May 20, 2006 in Charlotte. Velma was born Sept. 30, 1925 in Roxand Township, a twin daughter of Edward and Lula (Winters) Vedder.

She was a graduate of Sunfield High School and was a former employee of D & C Store, Barley-Earhart and Wilcox-Gay, where she first met her future husband.

A devoted wife and loving mother, she is survived by her husband, John; six children, John M. Marsh of Charlotte, Janice (Dave) Dryer of Freeport, Pamela (Ron) Wilson of Charlotte, Daniel (Carol) Marsh of Sunfield, Valerie (Todd) Thomann of Eagle and Joey (Kelli) Marsh of Saranac; 19 grandchildren, one great-grandson, one sister, Letha Bentley of Mulliken, one brother, Keith (Roberta) Vedder of Charlotte, and nieces and nephews.

Services were held May 24 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Kathy Smith officiating. Interment was in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Jason Debler, Dustin Marsh, Justin Marsh, Michael Marsh, James Taylor, Kendall Viele, John Wilson and Ronnie Wilson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Jacob Martin

Jacob (Jake) (Ralph) Martin of Mason, 87, passed on to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006. Jacob was born Nov. 18, 1918 in St. Johns, the son of Floyd J. and Ada M. (Benham) Martin.

He was a veteran of World War II, having service assignments in Arkansas, England and Germany. Jacob was a lifetime member of Teamsters Local Union 580 as a semi-tuck/trailer driver until he became “semi-retired” from Associated Groceries of Holt. He was a founding member of the Mason-West Columbia Church of the Nazarene. Jacob met his wife of 56 years at Dart & Cady Plumbing & Heating of Mason.

Jacob was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Gerald (Geraldine), and Basil (Gertrude); baby sister, Reva Martin; son-in-law, Chuck Chapman; and brother-in-law, Richard Neuchterlein.

Surviving are his wife, Vera (Jennings); six children, Michael (Joyce) of Mason, Susan of Lansing, Dennis (Jackie) of Junction City, Kan,. Gary (Pam) of Dimondale, Bryan (Karen) of Mason, Terry (Lisa) of Lansing; sister, Jean Neuchterlein of Denver, Colo.; and sister-in-law, Fern Martin of Alpena. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Since 1995 Jacob has suffered with cancer related illnesses until he was finally called Home. Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 14 at the Shelly Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Mike Prince officiating. Interment followed at North Aurelius Cemetery with casket bearers Michael Martin, Dennis Martin, Gary Martin, Bryan Martin, Terry Martin, Kirk Chapman and Stacy Chapman.

For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Lansing, or Holt Church of the Nazarene in memory of Jacob.

Joe Martinez

Joe Martinez, 77, of Charlotte, died Dec. 26, 2006. He was born Dec. 26, 1929 in Brownsville, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and retired from GM after 50 years of employment.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Norma in 1967, and daughter, Jacqueline in 1965.

Mr. Martinez is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan; children, Bill (Michelle) Martinez of Grand Ledge, Mary (Lloyd) Payer of Ypsilanti, Monica Martinez of Lansing, Debra (Juan) Centeno of Lansing, Carol Martinez of Lansing and Jonathan (Norma) Martinez. of Clarksville, Tenn.; his brothers and sisters, Guadalupe Romero, Mary Jane Billips, Bess (Bill) Dunlap, Liz (Calvin) Smith, Arnoldo (Deloris) Martinez and Fidel Martinez Jr.

A memorial service was held Dec. 28 at the Oneida Gospel Church in Grand Ledge with the Interment at Deepdale Memorial Garden in Lansing.

The family has requested that donations be made to the Eaton Community Hospice in lieu of flowers.

Russell Mason

Russell Mason, age 76, of Eaton Rapids, passed away May 18, 2006. He was born October 3, 1929 in Lansing Michigan the son of Orin and Jessie Mason. He retired from General Motors in 1989 and had served two terms as the President of Local 1753. He was preceded in death by daughter, Jessica and great-granddaughter, Joley.

He will be deeply missed by his best friend and loving wife Maxine of 56 years; 2 sisters; Dorothy Swan and Esther Koch; 5 children, Rosamond Mason, Catherine (Alan) Coats, Mark (Nancy) Mason, Charles Mason, Andrea Mason; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 2:00 p.m. at the Aurelius Baptist Church, 4419 W. Barnes Rd., Mason.

Phyllis Oxby Masters

Phyllis Oxby Masters, 92, of Olivet, passed away peacefully in Battle Creek on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006. She was born May 22, 1914 in Marengo Township in Calhoun County to Thomas Burton Oxby and Bessie (Murray) Oxby.

She was a lifelong resident of the Olivet area. She attended Olivet High School, class of 1931, and Detroit Business College. In the mid 1950s, she worked for the Eaton County Health Department and traveled from school to school, testing student’s vision and hearing. She retired in 1965 from Olivet College as the Bookstore and Coffee Shop manager. Her favorite job, however, was working for Dr. Paul Eagle, and Dr. Raymond Wilks, in Olivet during the 1940s and early 50s.

On Feb. 8, 1936, she married Weldon Bartlett and settled in Olivet. On Oct. 24, 1964, she married Harold Masters. Phyllis was an avid bridge player with an opinion and a quick wit. She and Harold spent many socially busy winters in Sarasota, Fla., during their retirement years. She was a member of the Olivet Congregational Church, the Women’s Fellowship, the Fannie Quick Circle, the Oliver College Women’s Board and two very select bridge clubs.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Harold; two brothers, Murray Oxby and Hugh Oxby; a sister, Dorothy Oxby Horn; a granddaughter, Jessica (Bartlett) DeRamus; a stepson, David Masters and a step granddaughter, Robin Masters.

She is survived by a daughter, Corky (John) Hagemann of Battle Creek; a son, Jack (Meredith) Bartlett, of Tecumseh; a stepdaughter, Barbara Brummel of Grand Haven; two stepsons, Preston (Glenda) Masters of Alexander City, Ala and Geoff Masters of Eugene, Ore. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 12 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Olivet Congregational Church Elevator Fund.

James. R. “Mike” Mathews

James R. “Mike” Mathews, 82, of Charlotte, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2006 at his residence. Mr. Mathews was born Sept. 10, 1924 in Charlotte the son of Michael and Zola (Gurney) Mathews and was a lifelong Charlotte resident.

He was a 1944 graduate of Charlotte High School, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the South Pacific and had been employed at A.E./ retiring in 1988 after 40 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Roberta Mahn.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou (Hall) Mathews; four daughters, Dawn Michele “Micki” (Pete) Lothamer of Bellevue, Patti Jo (Michael) Parish of Bellevue, Robyn S. (Don Harding) Long of Charlotte and Jamie Marie (Dean) Mead of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother, Carroll “Chuck” (Esther) Mathews of Hastings; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held Nov. 27 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Don Francis officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital, Charlotte.
