Mary Ann Reed

Mary Ann Reed of Charlotte died May 27, 2006 in Atlantic Beach, Florida. Mrs. Reed was born in Salem, Ohio the daughter of Raymond and Goldia (Watson) Fitzpatrick and had been a Charlotte resident for 51 years, coming from Detroit.

She was a member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church and its choir, was an avid golfer, member of the Charlotte Country Club, and a member of the Bridge Clubs and former member of the Charlotte Woman's Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Jane Ann Veen of Mill Valley, California and Judith Lynn Smith of Yulee, Florida, six grandchildren, John, Maria, Joseph, Teresa, Lauren and Allison, five great-grandchildren, two great-grandsons, a sister, Jane White of Ohio, one nephew and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Herbert Reed in 1978.

Graveside services and interment took place June 2 at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church for missions or the Eaton County Medical Care Facility Foundation. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Nancy L. Reed

Nancy Lynn Reed, 59, of Charlotte, died Sept. 2, 2006. She was born Aug. 8, 1947.

Nancy grew up in Lansing, where she attended Maple Hill Elementary, Walter French Junior High and the Beekman Center. Later Nancy moved to the Nashville and Charlotte areas, where she prided herself and her family and friends by becoming a 1990 high school graduate of the Maple Valley Adult Education program. Nancy was also a longtime employee at Peckham Vocational Industries in Charlotte where she not only enjoyed working, but made many, many friends. Nancy participated in several Special Olympic events and also enjoyed bowling, crafts, movies, oldies music, collecting stuffed animals and spending time with loved ones. Nancy was known for her gentle, sweet, lovable ways that left a lasting impression on all she met.

Nancy was preceded in death by her mother, Luba (Hotianovich) Reed); her father, William Reed; and her longtime friend, Randy Davis.

Surviving are her sister, Stephanie (Steven) Freeman of Dimondale; her brother, Jack (Yvonne) Reed of Novi; her brother William of Lansing; and her loving nieces and nephews, Taylor, Roxanne, Max and Alex.

The family would like to bestow a very special thanks to Dr. Carol Rapson and her staff as well as the employees and volunteers at the Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte for the loving care they provided during the last weeks of Nancy's life. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial took place Sept. 6 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Robert D. Rhodes

Robert Duane Rhodes of Charlotte, formerly of Okemos, 70, died Friday, April 7, 2006 at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. Mr. Rhodes was born April 8, 1935 in Lansing, the son of Arthur Constant and Margaret Alice (Long) Rhodes.

He worked for Patys Auto Parts in Okemos and later Anchor Motor Freight in Lansing as a welder. He retired from Anchor in 1992.

Surviving are his wife of over 35 years, Brenda S. (Adams) Rhodes; sisters, Shirley Currier of Sylvania, OH, and Malinda Hoppes of Plant City, FL., brother, James (Shirley) Rhodes, Sr. of Eaton Rapids; brother-in-law, Paul and Loerne (Wilbanks) Adams; eight nieces; four nephews, and many aunts, uncles, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Betty Marie Rhodes, Norma Jean Carpenter and Jacqueline Sika.

Graveside services were held April 12 at the East Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel in Okemos with Pastor Mark Booth officiating.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eaton Community Hospice home, Charlotte.

Carol Sue Rial

Carol Sue Rial, of Eaton Rapids, age 62, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2006 in Lansing. Carol was born September 25, 1943 in Muncie, IN, the daughter of Fred and Dorothy Wells.

She is survived by her husband of 15 years, Carl B; 2 daughters, Kellie (Phillip) Curns of Woodland and Shonda Payne of Eaton Rapids; 2 sons, Colt (Carla) Payne of Eaton Rapids and Daniel Eldridge of IN; 3 grandchildren, Allison Quist, Kristin Payne and Lucas Payne; special friends, Gale and Martha Payne.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, July 8, 2006 at the Brickyard Cemetery, Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Robert W. Carpenter, Sr. officiating. The family was served by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. .

Eric A. Rice

Eric Arbor (Bobby Thorp) Rice, 84, of Sunfield, passed away Sunday, Jan 1, 2006 at his son’s residence in Bumpus Mills, Tenn.

He was born Aug. 31, 1921 in Roxand Township, the son of Percy and Lucretia (McDiarmid) Thorp. Eric was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, decorated with a Purple Heart Medal, and was a retired union electrician. Mr. Rice was the past mayor of Sunfield for many years, a member of the VFW, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Sunfield/Mulliken Lodge, pas master of the Sunfield Lodge, a Shriner, a member of the Royal Arch, and past high priest of the Royal Arch.

Eric was preceded in death by: both his parents; and his wife, Bernice P. Rice, in January 2005. He is survived by: his five children, Eric Jr. (Zella) of Sheridan, Leslie (Alice) of Lakeside, Kirk (Cheryl) of Bumpus Mills, Tenn., Stanley (Dorita) of Lake Odessa, and Kelly (Gary) Glassnor of Grand Ledge; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother, George (Mary) Thorp of Sunfield; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Rev Jeffrey Schrock of Sunfield United Methodist Church officiating. A U.S. Army military burial took place at Ft. Custer Cemetery in Battle Creek. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte; C/O RFH P.O. Box 36 Sunfield, MI 48890.

Robert B. Rickle

Robert B. Rickle, 86, of Potterville, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006. Robert was born March 21, 1920 in Vermontville, the son of Boyer and Hazel (Wells) Rickle.

He was known to many as a talented local carpenter with a warm sense of humor who retired from Meijer. When Robert was younger he enjoyed hunting, fishing and racing horses. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; sons, Michael (Beth) Rickle of Potterville, Robert (Alice) Rickle of Homewood, Ill., Gregory (Nina) Rickle of Midland, Steve (Kathy) Rickle of Dimondale; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Vierk and Margaret Wood and a sister-in-law Helen Rickle.

He was preceded in death by his brother Douglas Rickle.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006 with Pastor Rebecca Morrison officiating. Interment was at Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Esther Dianne “Eck” Risner

Esther Dianne “Eck” Risner, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack on October 24, 2006 in Lansing, MI. Esther was born on January 2, 1945 in Charlotte, MI to Elliott and Gertrude Risner. She graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1964. She worked for 15 years at Motor Wheel and was currently employed by General Motors. Esther had a wit and character about her that made her fun to be with! She never backed down from anybody or anything, but had suffered greatly from the effects of diabetes in recent years. She will be greatly missed by her family in Eaton Rapids and her many friends and extended family in Lansing. Her license plate read, “If you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch!” That was Esther! She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Chalmer; sisters, Irene Wittman and Elsie Love.

She is survived by 4 sisters. Jewelene Anderson, Lorena Jecks, Mae (William) Locke and Joyce (Jim) Byron; 2 brothers, Alden (Bev) Risner and Marcum (Jan) Risner; many nieces and nephews; very special friend, Darlene Premo; and her dog, Daisy.

Funeral services were held on October 27, 2006 from the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing with Mark St. Louis officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.

Virgie Roberts

Virgie Roberts, 98, a long-time resident of Sarasota, Fla., died Dec. 20, 2006. Virgie Mae Nicely was born Oct. 6, 1908 in Bellevue, Ohio.

An ambitious young woman, she began her career as the secretary of the Bellevue YMCA, and later became Chief Clerk for the Ration Board during World War II. In 1935 she met and married Paul Roberts and moved to Jackson, where she began her career as proprietress of her first tourist home. Her second endeavor was to own an apartment building in Grand Rapids, and finally, in 1950, Virgie and Paul relocated to Charlotte, where she owned and operated Stone Manor on the corner of Cochran Avenue and Henry Street. In 1954, Virgie co-founded Maeward Couplings, Inc. in Olivet, and served as the company's controller until her retirement from business in 1970. Virgie will also be remembered as a world-traveler, world-class cook, collector of fine art, and generous and beloved Mother and Grandmother.

Virgie was preceded in death by five siblings; her first husband, Merlin Koch; and her husband, Paul.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maryellen and Eugene Dudley, also of Sarasota, Fla.; four grandchildren, Thais (Dennis) Mishler of Brighton, Doug (Mary) Dudley of West Bloomfield, Laurie (Bryce) Dudley of Sedona, Ariz., and Julie (Denny) Wilson of Cumming, Ga.; eight great-grandchildren, Joel, Mara and Michael Mishler, Kaitlyn, Sean and Brendan Dudley, and Jake and Jenna Wilson; three great-great grandchildren (Mara).

Funeral services will be held at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1 p.m. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jan.13. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Bruce Leon Robertson

Bruce Leon Robertson Mason, age 86, died Wednesday, November 22, 2006 in Charlotte. He was born September 25th, 1920 in Eaton Rapids the son of Frank and Cora (Kirby) Robertson. Bruce was an Eaton Rapids High School graduate, class of 1939. He served as a Sergeant for the Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. A retired Tool & Die Maker for over 33 years with General Motors in Lansing, retiring in 1980. In his earlier years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, planting gardens and wood working. Preceding him in death were his parents, and wife Lorene.

He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy (Bob) Crouch of Potterville and step-son J.D.Welch of Montecello, In.; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Barbara Friedley and Roma (Bryon) Stevens; 2 brothers, Charles (Maxine) and Wilbur Robertson; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, November 25th at 1:00 P.M. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in the Fowler Cemetery in Aurelius Township. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to; ICDRC, 1688 West Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne, Fl. 32910 for the care of his autistic grandson Cody Crouch.
