Ozell Ellen Spotts
Ozell Ellen Spotts, age 86, of Charlotte, died Thursday, June 1, 2006. Mrs. Spotts was born April 24, 1920 in Moulton, Alabama, the daughter of William and Hattie Mae (Brown) McCormick.
Mrs. Spotts worked as a custodian for Calhoun County and then Airway Manufacturing. As a child she worked in the fields in Alabama picking cotton by hand. She was a hardworker who enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter Faye (Harold) Lucas of Battle Creek; stepsons, Nolan (Jackie) Spotts of Charlotte, Mike (Christine) Spotts of Charlotte; fourteen grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brother, Marvin McCormick of Alabama and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held June 5 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Reverend Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was held at MapleHill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Douglas Gene Squires
Douglas Gene Squires, age 76, passed away January 1, 2006 in Tucson, AZ. Douglas was born February 22, 1929 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Albert and Bertha Helen (Clough) Squires. Doug was 15 when he started working for his uncles at the Squires Brother's Meat Market, then for Arnolds and Becklunds IGA, both in Eaton Rapids. He retired from Eberhardt Grocery in Lansing after amassing over 45 years in the grocery industry.
Douglas proudly served for 36 years in the Michigan National Guard, and was happiest on his Farmall tractor, working in a field of corn or at a diner having coffee and a donut while visiting with those around him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Doris (Chenault) in 2005; sister, Patricia Davis; 3 brothers, June, Donald, and William. Douglas is survived by 5 children, Maurica Brown of Charlotte; Ralph Squires of Moore, ID; Annette (Norman) Nealey of Eaton Rapids; Robert Squires of Grandview, TN; and Sally (John) Whaley of Cullman, AL; 3 step-sons: Peter (Sharon) Hubley of Washington, D.C.; Paul Hubley of Phoenix, AZ; Rocky (Leigh) Tyler of Eaton Rapids; 7 grandchildren; Troy, Todd & Michael Nealey, Brittany Brown, Maegan DiLoreto, Cameron & Caroline Hubley; 1 brother, Howard (Kathy) Squires of Ocala, FL; uncle, Harry Clough of Willmington, NC; several nieces & nephews including Larry (Cathy) Davis of Eaton Rapids and many cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006 at the First Baptist Church, 9220 Kinneville Road, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Scott Boles officiating. The family will receive friends for 1 hour prior to the service at the Church. Interment of the cremains, with National Military Honors, will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids.
Arrangements are by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Eaton Rapids Historical Society or the Alzheimer's Foundation in memory of Douglas Squires.
Lillian St. Laurent
Lillian St. Laurent, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006.
Lillian was born in Cochrane, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Alexis and Marie (Chausse) Sisler. After starting her family in Michigan, she became a naturalized citizen of the United States in order to vote in school elections in support of her children and grandchildren. She and her husband, Dr. Bernard C. St. Laurent, lived on the shores of School Section Lake in Mecosta for over 30 years. Known as Grammy Lill, she enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s band concerts, dance performances, traveling with her family, as well as reading and gardening. She was an original employee of the Charlotte Wal-Mart store, where she worked as a greeter for 15 years. She is survived by her daughter Laurie St. Laurent (Kurt Johnson) of Charlotte; daughter, Jill (Patrick) Dewitt of Charlotte; son, Bill (Marie) Gregoíre of Cochrane, Ontario; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlotte. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Band Boosters. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Evon Stafford
Evon Stafford, 72, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of DeWitt and Charlotte, died Sept. 3, 2006 in Tucson, Ariz. Evon was born June 29, 1934 in Lansing and was the daughter of Fahil and Nellie (Haddad) Farhat.
She graduated from Lansing Catholic Central High School and attended Lansing Community College. She went to Washington DC where she worked for the treasury department. She returned to Lansing and met her husband at Michigan State where she worked. Evon stayed home and raised a son and daughter. After 20 years she found herself the head of the household. She eventually returned to MSU after updating her skills at Lansing Community College. The last 15 years she worked at the school of osteopathic medicine as an accountant.
Evon retired and moved to Arizona after many visits and vacations to Tucson and Green Valley. She rented a house in Viewpointe and developed firm ideas about what she wanted in an Arizona house. She first rented her current house and then bought it from the owner after six months of living in Springpointe. After settling into her new home she discovered she had breast cancer. She was able to overcome this and had been cancer free for five years. Then her cancer returned this fall. In spite of this adversity, Evon remained cheerful. She proudly displayed art and words of joy from her granddaughters, Sarah, Stephanie and Kimberly. Evon enjoyed the blue sky, openness and the Arroyo behind her house. While not quite like the lake in Michigan, or even the railroad she left behind in Michigan, she loved having her family close by in Tucson.
Evon was active in the Foreign Film Night group in Springpointe, had been a very active member of the Social Committee, Chairperson of the first Springpointe biennial Garage Sale, the Neighborhood Association in Green Valley and fund raising Financial Committee.
Surviving is her daughter, Cynthia (Todd) Lowe of Tucson, Ariz., and their daughters, baby Kimmy and Stephanie; son, Stephen (Debra) Stafford of Tucson, Ariz. and their daughter, Sarah; and brother, George Farhat of Green Valley, Ariz.
The Funeral Liturgy was held Sept. 9 in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 West Saginaw, Lansing with Father John P. Klein presiding. Rite of Committal is Deepdale Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Evon.
Nancy Stark
Nancy Stark 60, of Lansing, MI, died, Monday, December 4, 2006. Mrs. Stark was born September 17, 1946 in Eaton County, MI, the daughter of Mike and Pauline (Hall) Bruce. Mrs. Stark enjoyed genealogy, family history and quilting. She loved reading and writing poems and stories and taught illiterates how to read and write.
She was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie Stark and a brother, Mark Stark.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; daughters, Nikki Stark of Las Vegas, NV; Marci Stark of San Diego, CA; Lauren Ashley of Lansing; Angie Durbin of San Diego, CA; sons, Steve Ashley of Bay City; Steve Stark of Las Vegas, NV and Scott Stark of Las Vegas, NV; fourteen grandchildren; sister, Paula Harshman; brother; Mike Bruce; brother, Scott Bruce; sister, Brenda Bruce and sister; Gina Roggeman.
Funeral services were Thursday, December 7, 2006 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte with Father Denis R. Spitzley officiating. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Clara Stoel
Clara Stoel, age 85, went to be with the Lord Thursday, June 8, 2006.
She was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Denver, Colorado to John and Wilhelmina (Plomp) Kamp. Clara married Jerry Stoel on Nov. 13, 1942. She was a homemaker and farmer's wife in the Sunfield area as well as a teacher's aide in the Sunfield School and the first woman bus driver for the Lakewood School District.
Clara was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Jerry Stoel, an infant daughter, both her mother and father, two brothers and four great-grandchildren.
She is survived by children, Shirley (Kenneth) Terpstra, Gene Stoel and Meredith Doyle, Jim (Esther) Stoel, Kathy (Denny) Smith, Ken (Sandy) Stoel, and Anita (Richard) Duits, eighteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and four sisters.
Funeral services were held June 12 at the Harvest Community Church, Lake Odessa, with Rev. Richard Sytsma, Jr. officiating. For those wishing, contributions may be made to the Eaton Community Hospice, Charlotte, c/o RFH P.O. Box 36 Sunfield, Mich. 48890.

Jerold Stoel
Jerold Stoel, age 82, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 1, 2006. He was born Nov. 14, 1923 in Sebewa Township to Louis and Sadie (Plakmeyer) Stoel.
Jerold married Clara Kamp on Nov. 13, 1942. He was a farmer and carpenter in the Sunfield area all his life and bus driver for the Sunfield/Lakewood School District. He served in the Air Force for two years during World War II.
Jerold was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his mother, father and stepmother, three brothers and four great-grandchildren.
He is survived by Clara, his loving wife of 63 years; children, Shirley (Kenneth) Terpstra, Gene Stoel and Meredith Doyle, Jim (Esther) Stoel, Kathy (Denny) Smith, Ken (Sandy) Stoel and Anita (Richard) Duits; eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held June 5 at the Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Rev. Richard Sytsma Jr. officiating. Interment was held in the East Sebewa Cemetery.

Fred W. Sussex
Fred W. Sussex, 78, of Charlotte, passed away, June 15, 2006 at his home. Mr. Sussex was born in Lansing, Oct. 11, 1927.
Fred was a manager and teacher who taught the welding trade and was involved in the welding supply business in Lansing, Kalamazoo and Sturgis. He was employed at Welders Supplies and Gases and AGA Gases. Fred loved life, was a good man and true and was never happier that when he was surrounded by his family. He loved airplanes, sailboats, music, reading, playing cards and a good joke. Fred freely shared his knowledge, sense of humor and his celebration of life. Family and friends considered their lives enriched and blessed by knowing him and the example he set.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Hudson and Donna McGinley.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Barbara of 58 years, daughters; Sharon Grescowle of Holt, Susan (Gene) Milligan of Dimondale, Sandra (Don) Miles of Des Moines, Iowa; son, Edward Sussex of Charlotte, six grandchildren; Amy (Tony) Lask, Lisa (Bill) Hambly, Heather and David Milligan, and John and Robin Miles, and three great-grandchildren; Alexandra, Andrea and Anthony and a huge extended family including step-mother, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held June 20 at Charlotte Free Methodist Church with Pastor Darold Hill officiating. Interment was in Deepdale Memorial Gardens in Lansing.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Public Library or the Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital.
