Thomas Murdock Sutphin
Thomas Murdock Sutphin, 78, of Charlotte died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006. Mr. Sutphin was born Nov. 2, 1927 in Lansing, the son of the late Claude and Jessie (Murdock) Sutphin and biological parents, the late Clarence and Gladys Dahlman.
Mr. Sutphin retired from General Motors as a shuttle bus driver and served his country in World War II as a Marine. He enjoyed reading and working on model airplanes. After he retired he and his wife of 52 years, Dorothy, traveled in their motor home.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Austin Murdock Sutphin of Boston, Mass.; daughter, Dawn Elizabeth (Wayne LaBumbard) Hawk of Gladstone; son, Kenneth Murdock (C.J.) Sutphin of Gowen; four grandchildren, Jayson Linn, Christopher Linn, Justin Kibbee, Jessica Kibbee; two great-grandchildren, Caden Linn and Emily Ann Linn; foster brother, Ross Webb; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Herman (Ilene) Tompkins, Alice (Ray) Brundage, Charles (Betty) Kardatzke, and Sherman (Jennifer) Kardatzke.
He was preceded in death by foster sister, Ruth Yatz; brothers-in-law, Jake Kardatzke, LeRoy Tompkins, and sisters-in-law, Mary Eichenberg and Wilma Cox. There will be no services. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinsons Foundation.

Allan Randel Syme
Allan Randel Syme, 87, of Eaton Rapids died Saturday evening Oct. 7, 2006 at the Eaton Community Hospice in Charlotte. He was born Sept. 14, 1919 in Floral Park Long Island, N.Y., the son of Edmund and Emma (Freestone) Syme.
Allan graduated from Swanikee High School in 1937. He was very active for many years with the Boy Scouts of America and sang in many church choirs where he had lived. Allan served in the Army during World War II and on the Atlantic crossing, on the Queen Mary to Normandy Beach, he entertained the troops with his singing. While in service he guarded POW's on the Normandy Beach and also fought at the Battle of the Bulge. In 1947 he married Helen Elizabeth Loser and worked as a supply clerk for the U.S. Government and later with the Social Security Administration. After retirement in 1979 he moved his family back to Michigan and has resided in Eaton Rapids since 2000. He was an avid gardener and fisherman and often gave food from his garden to the needy. Allan was a very happy and uplifting soul, always cheerful, and will be deeply missed by his family.
Surviving are his wife, Helen "Betty"; three sons, Randel S. Syme of Eaton Rapids, Edmund (Beth) Syme of Gibsonton, Fla., and Roger F. (Joy) Syme of Hastings; daughter, Margery E. (James) Greer of Gibsonton, Fla.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jesse W. Syme of California and Brice Syme of Long Island, N.Y.
Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. at the home of Ted (Pete) Peterson of Hastings. Inurnment of cremains are planned for a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. The family wishes to express their heart felt thanks to Eaton Community Hospice for the excellent care given Allan during his stay. Steven C. Taylor
Steven C. Taylor, 58, of Olivet died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006 in Grand Rapids. Steve was born July 25, 1948 in Ionia the son of Donald and Crystal (Weeks) Taylor.
He was a 1964 graduate of Charlotte High School and upon completion of the college requirements, became a school teacher and taught in the Olivet Community School for almost 30 years. He was a past president of the Olivet Education Association and had been a member of the Olivet Lions Club. Since retirement from teaching he had enjoyed farming and raising beefalo on his farm.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Taylor and brother, Brad Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Kristy L. (Jeffery) Taylor; his mother, Crystal Taylor of Charlotte; two brothers, Stewart (Joyce) Taylor of Olivet and Gerald (Joann) Taylor of Charlotte; and several loving nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
At Steve's request, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may go to the American Diabetes Association.

Fern L. Terwilliger
Fern Louise Terwilliger, 97, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 at Hearthstone Assisted Living in Kentwood where she’d lived for the last three years. She formerly resided at Emily Andrus Home in Battle Creek.
She was born Sept. 20, 1909, the daughter of John and Eva (Whitmore) Martin in Climax.
Fern worked at the Singer Sewing Company in Battle Creek teaching sewing classes and worked as a seamstress at Klein’s and Jacobsen’s. Fern and her husband, Silas, lived and worked in Battle Creek until 1939 when they moved to Bellevue. She lived there for 65 years.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Silas Terwilliger in 1990. She is survived by her children, Lula B. Sherbert of Southfield, Rev. Wendell (Pat) Terwilliger of Indian, Alaska, Rev. Elston (Imogene) Terwilliger of Yucaipa, Calif., Rev. Gaylord (Jean) Terwilliger of Caledonia and Yvonne (Rev. Garrett) Herwich of Roeland Park, Kansas. Her three sons are ministers and her two daughters married ministers. Fern is also survived by her 21 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Fern was a long time member of Ainger Bible Church in Olivet and served as president of the Missionary Society. She was also active with Christian Women’s groups in Battle Creek. She has enjoyed many years of God’s blessings in her life.
Services were held Friday, Nov. 24 at the Ainger Bible Church in Olivet with her sons and son-in-law officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Bellevue. Memorials may go to the Chapel Fund at Ainger Bible Church. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Margaret A. Thole
Margaret A. Thole, age 86, passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Heartland Healthcare, Ionia. She was born the daughter of Francis and Mary Neiters on Feb. 9, 1920 in Rockville, Minn.
Margaret married Francis G. Thole in 1946. She was a member of the Sunfield Garden Club.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson, Justin McAllister.
Surviving are her children, Richard (Ellie) Thole of Portland, Mary (Ted) Bazany of Lansing, Rosie McAllister of Texas, John Thole, Bill (Arlene) Thole of Alto, Sue (Brett) Meyers of Lake Odessa, Mike (Dawn) Thole of Clarksville and Jim (Darla) Thole of Clarksville; many grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 5 at the Rosie Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield, with Pastor Tim Bateman officiating. Interment was held in the Sunfield Cemetery.

James “Jim” L. Thompson
James “Jim” L. Thompson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl., formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 44, died suddenly on Monday, April 17, 2006 in Ft. Lauderdale. Jim was born May 31, 1961 in Charlotte, Michigan. He was a 1979 graduate of Eaton Rapids High School. Jim was a 13 year veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in Germany, and was attached with the Patriot Missile Unit during the Gulf War (Desert Storm)
He is survived by his wife, Maria; his son, Corporal Kevin J. Thompson, U.S. Marine Corps of Camp LeJuene, serving a tour in Iraq; his daughter, Petra L. Thompson of Eaton Rapids; his parents, Larry and Ann Thompson of Eaton Rapids; his brother, Steven Thompson of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; his sister, Colleen (Robert) Stone of Lansing; his niece and nephew, Jordyn and Jansen Stone; and his second mom, Dorthy “Dot” Ragland of Birmingham, Alabama.
Graveside services will be held today at 2:30 at the Sunfield Cemetery with military honors.

Marjorie L. Thompson
Marjorie L. (Milbourn) Thompson, 78 of Charlotte died Sunday, April 9, 2006 at the Dimondale Nursing Care Center after a long illness. Mrs. Thompson was born Aug 2, 1927 in Clara Twp., Potter County, PA, the daughter of Edward and Gladys (Woodcock) Milbourn.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Thompson; four sons, Michael (Susan) Thompson of Charlotte, Larry (Sue) Thompson of Fayetteville, NY., David Thompson of Buchanan, and Danny Thompson of Stevensville; one daughter, Sandra (Paul) Smith of Grand Ledge; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three brothers, John (Sharon) Milbourn of Mass City, Robert Milbourn of Sheridan and Dennis (Peggy) Milbourn of Olivet; sister, Erma (Jack) Cain of Champaign, Ill., and sister-in-law, Betty Fitzpatrick of Lansing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Douglas Milbourn; sisters, Donna and Marion; and grandson, Tony Thompson.
Funeral services were held April 12 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was in the Kalamo Hillside Cemetery.

Catherine E. Thornberry
Catherine E. Thornberry, 86 of Charlotte, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2006 at Ingham Medical Hospital in Lansing. Mrs. Thornberry was born Dec. 14, 1919 in Irvington, Ken., the daughter of Robert and Annie (Burrington) Fagan.
Catherine worked for many years in a plant manufacturing Louisville Slugger baseball bats. She loved to crochet and do crosswords, and was a good cook. The past three years she lived at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility where she had lots of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1985; son, John Thornberry in 1979; and son-in-law, Sydney Robinson in 1989.
She is survived by daughters, Mary Robinson and Janice (Donald) Keehn, both of Charlotte; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held Oct. 4 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, with Pastor Rich Mitterling officiating. If desired, contributions may be made to the family.
