Arthur M. Griffith Jr.
Arthur Marshall Griffith Jr., 58, of Mulliken, died unexpectedly March 3, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Griffith was born July 8, 1945 in Charlotte, a son of A. Marshall Griffith Sr. and Marie Kuball. He was a Navy Vietnam veteran, retired General Motors employee and a member of Brothers of the Ring.
Surviving are his daughter, Joanne (Sam) Shaw, and son, Andrew (Patricia) Griffith, both of Lansing; two grandson, Sammie and Max Shaw; mother, Marie Griffith of Charlotte; brother, Bruce (Janet) Griffith of Charlotte; and two nephews, Blake Griffith and Matthew (Aimee) Griffith.
Public visitation was held March 7 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken. In honor of his dad, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Erma M. Griswold
Erma Maxine Griswold, 88, of Millett, died Saturday, March 27, 2004.
Mrs. Griswold was born Nov. 10, 1915 in Kalamo Township, the daughter of Clarence and Ruby (Briggs) Porter. She was very independent and was known as an “Original Organic Gardner.” Among her various collectibles were wedding napkins and cameras. At Baker’s Akers Park in Zephyrhills, Fla., she was well known for her bocci ball and shuffleboard championship skills.
She is survived by nephew and niece, Pat and Fran Weston; her beloved neighbor, Cindy Monroe; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Griswold in 1982; her infant son, James Frederic in 1936; dear friend, John Gregg of Williamston in 1991; and five brothers and sisters.
Funeral services were held April 1 at Pray Funeral Home, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ingham Visiting Nurse & Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Joanna Grace Gruber
Joanna Grace Gruber of Lansing, age 70, died Friday, November 12, 2004 in Charlotte. Joanna was born August 24, 1934 in Chicago, IL, moved to Banning, CA and graduated from Banning High School. In 1952 she attended Chaffee Junior College in Ontario, CA, receiving a degree in Accounting.
She married Jerry Gruber in 1956, moved to Eaton Rapids and later retired as an Administrative Associate with the Dept. of Animal Science at Michigan State University. Joanna was preceded in death by her 2 sons, Michael in 1977, Paul in November, 2004; parents John and Mildred Bretscher.
A memorial visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16 with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Joanna.
Paul Martin Gruber
Paul Martin Gruber, age, 40, of Lansing, died unexpectedly on Friday, November 5, 2004 in Lansing. Paul was born November 18, 1963 in Eaton Rapids. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School and from Central Michigan University (College of Bio-Medicine). Paul grew up working at the Lansing City Market (Willow Brook Farms) and was currently employed as a field engineer with Nucletron Corporation. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael and grandfather, James Gruber.
Paul is survived by his mother, Joanna Grace (Bretscher) Gruber of Lansing; his father, Jerry P. Gruber of Eaton Rapids and grandmother, Mae Gruber of Eaton Rapids.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4:00-6:00 p.m. with the Rosary being prayed at 7:00 p.m. at the Shell-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. A memorial mass will be prayed at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 515 E. Knight St., Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Paul Gruber and in honor of his mother.
Spencer William Gustafson
Spencer William Gustafson was born May 25, 2003 and passed away January 4, 2004. Spencer came three months early and every day of his life was a miracle. He gave seven months of joy and love to everyone who saw him. The nurses who cared for him at Sparrow Hospital’s Neonatology Department grew to love him and treated him as one of their own family members. His mommy and daddy will miss him and said “Everyday with Spencer was a blessing, he was our life.” Spencer went through so much but kept fighting but after a seven-month battle Spencer grew tired and is now spending eternity with Jesus. He is survived by his loving parents Brad and Sarah Gustafson of Eaton Rapids and brother Mitchell of Grand Ledge, grandparents Gary and Pat Gustafson of Grand Ledge and Robert and Roseanna Jackson of Oregon, great-grandparents William and Laura Kahl and Bud and Ardis Jackson, both of Oregon, aunt Emily (Sam) Sang and uncles Eric and Mark Gustafson and cousin Tyshawn Sang. Visitation Wednesday 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12:00 p.m. with the Reverend Brian McLaughlin officiating at Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
Calla W. Hahn
Calla W. Hahn, age 96, of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte, where she had been living for the past 8 months. Born May 6, 1907 in Auburn, New York, the daughter of Martin W. and Cora B. (Brandenstein) West. Mrs. Hahn graduated from Northern High School in Detroit and had worked for the Park David Corp., the Chrysler Corp. and for WFR Radio, all as a secretary. She retired from working to be a homemaker for her family. Preceding her in death were her husband, William D. Hahn in 1991; brothers, Ralph and Orla West.
Surviving are her son, Rodger (Jonnie) Hahn of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren, Christie Hahn of Detroit, Angela Hahn of Eaton Rapids; Thomas Hahn of Eaton Rapids and Christina Henley of Lansing; great-grandson, Kody Lankton of Eaton Rapids; brother, Carl West; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Thursday evening, February 26, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Tom Evans. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service time.
Lionel E. Haight
Lionel E. “Butch” Haight, 58, of Charlotte, formerly of Roscommon, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at his residence.
Mr. Haight was born May 28, 1945 in Ypsilanti, the son of Earl and Mary “Sheba” (Aubrey) Haight and had been a Charlotte area resident since 1969. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the occupation forces for 13 months in Korea, and was employed by the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors in Lansing for 31 years, retiring due to ill health. Mr. Haight was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3552, the Greenwalt-Flaherty Post #42 American Legion, and the Moose Lodge, all in Charlotte.
Surviving are his wife, Sally (Overmyer) Haight; daughter, Staci (Rod) Baum of Eaton Rapids; two grandchildren, Taylir Baum and Mackenzie Baum; his mother, Sheba Haight of Roscommon; and brother, Glenn Haight of Roscommon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Earl Haight, and a brother, David Haight.
An Eagles memorial service was held May 7, and graveside services were held May 8 at Roscommon Village Cemetery in Roscommon.

Fred Ara Halsey
Fred Ara Halsey, age 84, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, November 5, 2004 in Marshall. Fred was born January 17, 1920 in Walton Two., Eaton County, the son of Scott Alvin and Dana Leel (Conklin) Halsey. He attended the Wesleyan Church in Eaton Rapids, retired from Oldsmobile in 1981 after 28 years of service, was a member of VFW in Springport and especially enjoyed farming his land. He was preceded in death by his 2nd wife, Bernice Halsey, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Fred is survived by 1 daughter, Lana (Eddie) Layne of Albion; 1 son, Calvin (Ruth) Halsey of Eaton Rapids; 3 step children, Mary Ellen Prasil, Donald Bessette, Robert Bessette and their children; 4 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Alice (Ike) Pelton of Tompkins Center and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with a military service and interment following at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Fred Halsey.
Andrew D. Hansen
Andrew Dean Hansen, 77, of Vermontville, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004.
Mrs. Hansen was born Sept. 11, 1927 in Grand Rapids, the son of George and Carrie (Coleman) Hansen. Andrew served in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1981 from the Lansing School District as a carpenter and locksmith. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Vermontville, Nashville Lodge #255 F & A.M., and American Legion Post #222 PM life member. He was also a member of an Antique Study Group in Charlotte and a Vermontville historical study group. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Lameta (Bennett) Hansen; daughter, Melissa (Elliot) Holden of Baldwin; son, Kim (Denise) Hansen of Nashville; daughter, Jeanne Hansen of Nashville; son, Michael (Linda) Hansen of Grayling; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Trappen of Grand Rapids, Caroline Johnson of Middleville, and Corrine Chambers of Tallahassee, Fla.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Jerome Hansen, Frederick Hansen, Harold Hansen and Stanley Hansen, and sister, Blanche Hummell and Florence Word.
Funeral services were held Oct. 9 at First Congregational Church of Vermontville, with Pastor Mark Jarvie and Sally Nolen officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or the Maple Valley Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
