Martha Jane Hansen
Martha Jane Hansen, age 81, of Duck Lake, died Monday, May 17, 2004 at her residence following a terminal illness. Born January 23, 1923 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Kenneth A. and Ruby L. (Bateman) Maupin. Mrs. Hansen attended Michigan State University and Henry Ford Nursing School in Detroit and received a Registered Nurses Degree. Martha was the wife of a career naval officer, and was faithful to her responsibilities with distinction. Preceding her in death were 2 brothers, Tom and Kay Maupin.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Jens Burnell “Bun” Hansen; 2 sons, Mark Foster (Diane) Hansen of Phoenix, AZ and Steven Peter (Kelly) Hansen of Corpus Christi, TX; 5 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Carolyn (Mel) Tallon of Redlands, CA; sisters-in-law, Joyce Maupin and Verna Maupin; several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be Thursday, May 20, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time.
Leona A. Harmon
Leona Alberta Harmon, 93,k of Bellevue died June 28, 2004 at Hospice House in Charlotte.
She was born Feb. 7, 1911 to Albert and Lena Belle (Miller) Turner in Bellevue Township. She worked at Wilcom-Gay Radio & TV in Charlotte and also delivered the Battle Creek Enquirer in rural Charlotte. Leona married Elwin J. Harmon on Dec. 3, 1932; he died Nov. 19, 1983. Leona lived with her son and daughter-in-law at the same location in Bellevue Township where she was born. She was a member of the N.W. Walton Grange and attended Ainger Bible Church.
She is survived by her sons, Jack (Ruth) Harmon of Autrain, Mich., and Joe (Joan) Harmon of Bellevue; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services were held July 2 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Scott Brook officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.
Memorial contributions may be made to Ainger Bible Church of Hospice House of Eaton County.
Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Bertha Ellen Harper
Bertha Ellen Harper, age 92, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, August 16, 2004 at a nursing home in Lansing. Born June 2, 1912 in Brookfield Township, the daughter of Miles and Minerva (McQueen) Spaulding. Mrs. Harper was an Eaton Rapids resident for most of her life. She worked at Horner Woolen Mills for several years and retired from the Eaton Stamping Co. Mrs. Harper was very active with the Eaton Rapids Senior Citizens, the Rocking Chair Deserters and the Mad Hatters Band. She loved crocheting of all kinds and lost her center vision in 1992 and had to give up her crocheting. In 1993 she started crocheting again by feel and crocheted pillow covers and made pillows for her grand and great-grandchildren for Christmas. Because of her lost eye sight she moved into Country Comfort Foster Care Homes in November of 1992 in Eaton County and was able to come and go as she wanted, but in 1998 she was admitted into the Pines Nursing Home in Lansing. Preceding her in death was her husband Ora Harper in 1972 and her daughter Gloria Jean Keehn in 2003.
Surviving are 4 grandchildren, Don (Jan) Keehn, Carla (Ken) Mazur, Pam (Tom) Braatz and Larry Keehn; several great and great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 20, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.
Betty J. Harris
Betty Jane (Isbell) Harris, 79, of Higgins Lake, formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Thursday, Feb. 123, 2004 in Grayling.
Betty was born March 20, 1924 in Cleveland Ohio, the daughter of Albert and Katheryn (Kedzie) Isbell. She loved singing and for many years she and her family made up the choir at First congregational Church in Eaton Rapids, where she was a member. Betty’s grandfather Kedzie had been a former pastor for the congregation. Betty was one of the original members of the Eaton Rapids Women’s Chorus. She had worked at Rod’s Bakery in Eaton Rapid, where she earned the name “Giggles”, and also worked in the high school cafeteria. She was a very active volunteer in the area, a past worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Eaton County Association of the OES, a life member and past president of the VFW Auxiliary, along-time member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Forty Et Eight Las Society De Femme. Betty and Donald Kelly “Bucky” Harris were married in November 1939 in Cleveland and enjoyed 64 years of wedded bliss. Betty was a very devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and companion. She and Don were blessed with four children, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Ida Colgan; and brother, William “Bid” Isbell.
Surviving are her husband, Don; daughters, Katheryn (Duane) Davidson, Donna Johnson and Nancy (Bruce) Cherry; son, Michael (Mary) Harris; all her grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ann Isbell; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Feb. 16 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with burial following in Rosehill Cemetery. An OES memorial service was held Feb. 15.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids.
Dora D. Harris
Dora D. Harris, 84, of Olivet, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 in Charlotte.
Dora was born Jan. 26, 1920 in Gladstone, Ill., the daughter of Walter D. and Josephine (Liggett) Robbins and had been an Olivet resident for 66 years. She was a 1938 graduate of Burlington (Iowa) High School, attended the Olivet Senior Citizen Dinners, had been a member of the Olivet Rebekah Lodge and was a member of Lee Center United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the Women’s Society and as Sunday school treasurer. She was a retired farmer and devoted housewife and mother.
Surviving are six children, Leon (Alice M.) Harris of Battle Creek, Duane (Roberta) Harris of Olivet, Gary (Lydia) Harris of Nashville, Loretta (Samuel) Wood of Marshall, Neal (Michele) Harris of Battle Creek and Dianna (Timothy) Skidmore of Olivet; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; brother, Walter Robbins of Iowa; and sisters, Evelyn Trosen, Louis Sherrill, Hazel Burgus and Agnes Hull, all of Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Harris, in 1962.
Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. David Litchfield officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
George Ashley Harris
George Ashley Harris, age 78, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 in Eaton Rapids. He was born September 14, 1925 in Hong Kong, the son of Leon David and Marie (ToKiu) Harris. George attended St. Andrews Mission Boarding School in Singapore from 1932 to 1941, was a WWII Merchant Marine Veteran, and later a Sunday school superintendent and member of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids. He was a life member of the Blue Lodge, a member of Eaton Rapids Conservation Club and Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop #51. George retired from G.M. in 1980 after 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by a brother, David J. Harris in 1952 and sister, Marrietta Eliza Vincent.
He was a devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and uncle to his surviving wife of 58 years, Alberta L. Harris; 2 daughters, Marietta E. (Francis) Schafer of Williamston, Susan D. (Grant) Hilts of Lansing; 2 sons, George I (Lucy) Harris of Eaton Rapids, Phillip L. (Barbara) Harris of Webberville; 8 grandchildren, Michael Laycock & Amanda (George) Musser, Ashley (Kelly), Andrew (Rachel) & Daniel Harris, Justin, Lee & Sean Harris; 4 great grandchildren, Jacob, Cassie, Serena & Hunter; special niece, Dee Cassidy and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 8, 2004 at the Shell-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with interment following at Rosehill Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Conservation Club in memory of George Harris.
John Richard “Jack” Harris
John Richard “Jack” Harris, age 75, of Eaton Rapids and Duck Lake, died Monday, August 16, 2004 in Eaton Rapids. Jack was born September 12, 1928 in Lansing, the son of John Luman and Mable Anna (Brillhart) Harris. He owned and operated the Harris Oil Co. in Eaton Rapids for the last 52 years. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army, past president of the Duck Lake Country club, the Lansing Oilman’s Club and Eaton Rapids JC’s; and a board member of Michigan Petroleum Association.
Preceded in death by 2 sister, Betty Putman and Neva Baumer, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jayne; daughter, Debra (Fred) Wager of Eaton Rapids; 3 grandchildren, Samantha Valerio, Adam Bresky, and John Bresky; 3 great grandchildren, Amanda Reeve, Anthony Bresky and Vincent Ellsworth.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2004 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at the Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids Medical Center Foundation or Eaton County Humane Society in memory of Jack Harris.
Carl Harrison
Carl D. Harrison, 76, of Lansing, died Thursday, July 22, 2004. Mr. Harrison was born June 22, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William G. and Elvera (Deidricks) Harrison.
Carl was a screw machinist.
He is survived by wife Juanita Harrison, daughters, Vera (Jack) Stewart of Florida, Theda Harrison of Michigan, Anna Nevarro of Nevada, Sarah Reich of Washington and son Theodore Harrison of Wisconsin and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, July 23 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Mr. Burton Smith officiating. Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.

Robert A. Harrison
Robert A. Harrison, 77, of Charlotte, died Thursday, April 29, 2004.
Mr. Harrison was born Oct. 5, 1926 in Jacksonville, Ill., the son of Howard and Frances (Lawson) Harrison. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was an accountant for Olivet College and the Eaton County Medical Care Facility until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Harrison was a member of the First Congregational Church in Charlotte, Photography Society of America and Friend of the Charlotte Community Library. He had been a Scout Master in Olivet for several years.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Eileen; children, Jan (Michael) Dieterle of Novi, Robert A. (Patricia) Harrison of Kalamazoo, Patricia (Melvin) Smith of Arlington, Texas; six grandchildren, Stacey, Justin and Andrea Dieterle, Kerry Harrison, Colin and Brooke Smith; and sister, Phyllis (Felix) Montville of Conway, S.C.
A memorial service was held May 1 at Charlotte First Congregational Church, with Pastor Phil Hobson officiating. Burial will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or Parkinson Foundation. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
