Carl R. Henry

Carl R. Henry, 85, passed away April 22, 2004 at Porter Hills Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.

Carl was founder and vice president of Aluminum Extrusions (AE) Inc. He was an honorary member of the MSU Coaches Club. He was very active in the community and on many boards while in Charlotte.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 66 years, Louise; his daughters, Judy (Charles) O’Brian of Whitehall, Mikayla (Bruce) Malcuit of Charlotte; grandchildren, Scott (Lori) O’Brien, Elizabeth (Shaun) Holtgrieve, Beth Malcuit, Amy (Rich) Phifer, Barbara (Frank) Silvas, Charles (JoAnna) Malcuit; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Delta Raby; brother, Jack (Ann) Henry; sister-in-law, Frances Heald; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Charlotte Ring.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte, the Parkinson’s Foundation, The American Cancer Society, Hospice of Michigan or a charity of one’s choice.

F. Louise Henry

F. Louise Henry (Bussell) passed away Sept. 15, 2004 at Porter Hill Nursing Home in Grand Rapids at the age of 83. She was born to John (Jack) and Ethel Bussell in Belding on Oct. 15, 1920. Surviving are children, Judy (Charles) O’Brien of Whitehall and Mikayla (Bruce) Malcuit of Charlotte; grandchildren, Scott (Lori) O’Brien, Elizabeth (Shaun) Holtgreive, Beth Malcuit, Amy (Rich) Phifer, Barbara (Frank) Silvas, Charles (Joanna) Malcuit; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Heald; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Carl R. Henry, in April 2004; and two brothers, Robert and Richard.

A memorial service will be held at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte on Tuesday, September 21 at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.

June M. Hewitt

June M. Hewitt, of Bellevue, died Aug. 9, 2004 at Oaklawn Hospital, Marshall.

She was born March 31, 1917 to Ernest and Nellie (Tray) Wood in Detroit and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1935. June volunteered her time knitting for the Charitable Union and also enjoyed quilting.

June was preceded in death by her husband, David M. Hewitt in 1993, one grandchild and a brother.

She is survived by daughters, Sandra Barden and Janet Bawden; son, Brian Hewitt; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 13 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Charitable Union.

Charles Hickok

Charles Hickok, 67, of North Bend, OR, formerly of Olivet, died at home May 26, 2004 after a year-long battle with cancer. He was born in Olivet on June 26, 1936 to Leslie and Minnie Hickok, and was a life-long resident of Olivet until moving to Oregon in June 2003 to be near his children.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-58 and was employed by the Olivet School District in special education transportation for 27 years before retiring in 1998.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents as well as a brother, Howard Hickok, who died in 1976.

He is survived by his three children: Mashyl (Chris) Cook of North Bend, OR; Sarah (David) Laidlaw of Meadow Vista, CA.; and Troy Hickok of Glide, OR. He also leaves a sister: Ann Allen of Elmira, sister-in-law Shirley Weaver of Olivet, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arrangements for a memorial service in Olivet are pending with interment in Bosworth Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Eaton County Genealogical Society at P.O. Box 337, Charlotte, MI 48813.

Gladys I. Hickok

Gladys I. Hickok, age 98, of Vermontville, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004 at Oakview Adult Foster Care in Quimby.

Mrs. Hickok was born Aug. 21, 1905 in Charlotte, the daughter of Willard and Fanny (Horn) Wilson Chase. She was raised in the Charlotte area and attended area schools, graduating from Eaton County Normal in 1923. She went on to teach school for one year after graduating. On Feb. 2, 1924 in Olivet, she married Ward Hickok. Gladys and Ward spent most of their married lives together living on the family’s Centennial Farm in Vermontville.

She is survived by her children, H. Hugh Hickok of Okemos, Dorothy (Robert) Betts of Nashville, Betty (Richard) Carr of Ceresis and Margaret (Dale) Owen of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Ward, who passed away in 1974.

Funeral services were held Jan. 17 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville, with Pastor Steve Olmstead officiating. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Nashville United Methodist Church or the charity of one’s choice.

Connie Lou Hicks

Connie Lou Hicks, age 61, died on Sunday, June 27, 2004 at her home, surrounded by her wonderful and loving family. Connie was born December 4, 1942 in Charlotte and lived in the Charlotte/Eaton Rapids are her entire life. She was a member of the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church where she spent 13 years as the afternoon secretary and over 20 years as the church financial secretary. Connie belonged to the United Methodist Women and started two of the circles, was Chair of their Recreation Department, member of Sr. Chancel Choir and Orchestra. She accompanied on the piano for evening services and belonged to the Eaton Rapids Women’s Chorus. Connie shared her home and financial support in helping people. For over 20 years, she belonged to a women’s prayer/share group and they became friends forever. Her greatest joy was in serving the Lord and trusting Him completely.

Preceded in death by her father, Wilbur Conard; brother, Bruce Conard; and step-father, Calvin Kohl; she is survived by her husband of 42 years, Wayne; children, Jeffrey (Anna) Hicks of Jackson and their children, Alexander and Nathan; Gregory (Stacie) Hicks of Eaton Rapids and their children, Anthony, William and Eric; Phillip (Carol) Hicks of Battle Creek and their children, Bradley, Paul, David, Megan and Abbey; mother, Mary Kohl of Eaton Rapids; sister-in-law Patricia Conard of Eaton Rapids; step-sisters, Pam (David) Hawkins, Carla (Dick) Coats, both of Mason; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 at the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist church with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. There will be a time to visit with her family on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the First United Methodist Church in memory of Connie.

Jack C. Hicks

Jack C. Hicks, 81, of Charlotte, died Friday, Sept. 3, 2004 at Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte.

Jack was born in Charlotte, the son of Harold and Thelma (Miles) Hicks, and was the eldest of 11 children. He graduated from Charlotte High School in 1942, joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the South Pacific.

He graduated from Lansing Business University in 1953 and joined IBM Corp., where he made his career for 35 years. Jack was a life member of the Charlotte VFW post, and was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, Moose and Eaton County Buck Club. He was also a lifelong golfer.

Surviving are his children, Terry (Johnna), Ronald (Bobbie-Jo), Thomas (Lorrie, deceased) and Renee (Don) Richardson; friend and companion, Margaret Strang; ex-wives, Barbara (Patterson) Hicks and Annabelle (LaTorre) Meeder; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; brothers, Richard, Darrell, Dale, Jerry, Bob and Bruce Hicks; sisters, Phyllis Moore, Shirley Collins and Janette Bruce; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Duane Hicks and grandson Stephen Hicks.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held Sept. 11 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House, 2675 S. Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813.

Dexter R. “Dick” Hill, Sr.

Dexter R. “Dick” Hill, Sr., age 74, of Oscoda, formerly of Charlotte, died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004 in Tawas City. Dexter was born Dec. 24, 1929 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Bryce Frank and Hilda Adina (Gilmore) Hill, Sr. He retired from the Olds Forge Plant in 1980 after 30 years of service and was a co-owner, with his wife, of Lulu’s Garden Restaurant in Eaton Rapids.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou (Shinaver); 5 children, Dexter R. Jr. of Eaton Rapids, David E. (Debra) of Charlotte, Harvey D. of Eaton Rapids, Lori A. (Thomas) Rhodabeck of Eaton Rapids, Patti (Robert) O’Neil of Stanwood; 9 grandchildren, Jamie A., Crystal, Hilari L., Megan L., Dale E., Jared R., Caitlyn A., Abbey R., and Jacob R.; brother, Bryce F. Hill, Jr. of Clarkdale, AZ; half brother, John of Leslie; 3 half sisters, Jo Anne, Kay and Mary Jane; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 11, 2004, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Stephen Klink officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the Autism Society in memory of Dexter Hill, Sr.
