Jane E. Hill
Jane E. (Carothers) Hill of Stanton died Monday, April 19, 2004 at Carson City Hospital.
Mrs. Hill was born March 30, 1950 in Charlotte, the daughter of Dan and Mary (Bennes) Carothers. She was raised in the Charlotte area and attended Charlotte schools, graduating in 1968 from Charlotte High School. She attended Ferris State University for one year and studied veterinary services. Mrs. Hill was a certified 911 dispatcher for a short time in Middleville and later became the receptionist at Codee Stamping in Hastings. She was a member of Greenville Community Church and Thornapple Valley Church. Jane maintained an interest in karate and loved playing with her dog Tasha. She is remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother and friend.
Surviving are sons, Jamie Hill and Jarett Hill, both of Stanton; grandchildren, Kelly and Jamie Hill Jr.; brother, Gary (Bonnie) Carothers of Cincinnati, Ohio; sister, Sally (Jim) Berrager of Grand Rapids; lifelong friends, Mike Hill of Stanton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services were held April 22 at Wren Funeral Home, with Chaplain Carla Smith officiating. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Verna D. Hobbins
Verna D. Hobbins, age 83, of Onondaga, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Lansing. Verna was born Dec. 14, 1920, the daughter of Daniel and Verna Grace (Zenker) Davis. She attended Pope Church, was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Post # 767 and the American Legion Auxiliary Post # 313 both in Springport and was a member of the Clark Retirement Club. Verna was preceded in death by her sister and 3 brothers.
She will be dearly missed by her husband of 53 years, Louis Reed Hobbins; her children, Beverly (Don) Smith of Springport, Daniel Hobbins of Lansing, Janice (Don Davis) Nolan of Eaton Rapids, Robert (Teresa) Hobbins of Onondaga; her 12 grandchildren, Donald, Tammy Kirby, Peggy (Jeff) Wallace, Daniel (Jody) Hobbins, Jr., Michael Hobbins, Jason Hobbins, John Hobbins, Hill (Alex) Hiesler, Janell (Tony Brown, and Janie (Jason Boatman, Fiancee) Cripe, Billy Hobbins, Brandy Neelis; 18 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Richard Hunter, Earl (Joanie) Hunter and Charles Hunter all of Perry; 2 sisters, Virgeline Bant of Perry, Mary Hunter of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Jack Fugate officiating. Interment followed at Tompkins Center Cemetery. Those desiring may make contributions to Pope United Methodist Church in memory of Verna D. Hobbins.
Clara M. Holcomb
Clara M. (Fordham) Holcomb, 84, of Charlotte, formerly of Olivet, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004 at Golden Days #2 in Charlotte, where she had resided for the past year.
Clara was born March 4, 1919 in Brookfield Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Clyde and Sarah (Shrontz) Fordham and had been a life resident of Brookfield Township. She attended Watkins Grade School and graudated from Charlotte High School. Clara had been employed by the Wilcox-Gay Co. in Charlotte for about 25 years and was an active participant in the Olivet Senior Citizens. She was married to Erman Holcomb; he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1976.
Clara is survived by her caregivers, Willard and Bessie Myers of Nashville; many nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 27 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Kevin Hale of Brookfield-Eaton United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Doris M. Holcomb
Doris M. Holcomb, 100, of Bellevue, died June 16, 2004 at Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Doris was born March 5, 1904 to James and Mabel (Merritt) Crawley in Baltimore Township, Barry County. She taught elementary school in Hastings and Barry County schools. Doris married Lawrence Holcomb on June 25, 1927; he preceded her in death in 1973. She was a member of Heritage Hills Bible Church and volunteered as a Sunday school teacher and treasurer since 1936. Doris was active in the Grange for over 60 years and with the County Extension Service. She volunteered with the 4-H from the 1940s through the 1970s, teaching. During World War II she knitted watch caps and scarves for the Army and Navy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Holcomb; daughter, Bernita Smith; sister, Irene Bridleman; brothers, Kenneth Crawley and Dale Crawley; and grandson, Douglas Smith.
She is survived by son, Bernard (Phyllis) Holcomb of Bellevue; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, sister, Verdie Sinclair; brother, Gerald (Ada) Crawley; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held June 21 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Jeff Homan officiating. Interment was at Ellis Cemetery.

Theresa S. Homan
Theresa Sue Homan, age 55, of Charlotte, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan surrounded by her family, losing a valiant three-year fight with ovarian cancer.
Theresa was born Sept. 12, 1948 in Charlotte, the daughter of Jay Dale Sr. and Mary Angeline (Salter) Homan and was a life resident of Charlotte. She had been employed at Don’s Truck Stop, Peckham Industries, Holiday Inn West and most recently at McDonald’s on West Saginaw. She attended South Baptist Church in Lansing.
Surviving are four sisters, Esther (Charles Clark) Homan of Marshall and Bushnell, Fla., Mary (James) Heath of Eagle, Betty Polhamus of Charlotte and Arlene (Earl) Frith of Vermontville; five brothers, twin brother, Thomas (Janet) Homan of Auburn, Wash., Jay Dale (Marsha) Homan Jr. of North Adams, James Polhamus of Charlotte, John (Ruth) Polhamus of Lyons and Eugene (Virginia) Polhamus of Paris, Mich.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Polhamus; and nephew, Joel Homan.
Funeral services were held Jan. 31 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. David Brooks of South Baptist Church officiating. Interment was at Millerburg Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. Special thanks were expressed for Dr. Douglas Pugmire and his office staff for their care, and also to Sparrow Hospital and Hospice House of Mid-Michigan for excellent care and concern for Theresa and her family.
James Herbert Hosack
James Herbert Hosack, age 48, died Monday morning, December 13, 2004 at home. James was born February 8, 1956 in Eaton Rapids to Harry A. and Marion R. (Gettys) Hosack. James loved to garden. He would turn the soil with a shovel and watch his plants grow. That made him very happy, as well as spending time with his grandkids and dogs. He was a tool and die maker for many years. He worked hard to support his family and give them a good home.
Surviving are his wife of almost 29 years, Cindy, his son James Jr., daughters Crystal and Haylee Joe; four grandchildren – Jasmin, Dakota, Cecilia and Dominec; mother and step-father Marion and Paul Smith, father Harry Hosack, two brothers, George (Deborah) Hosack and Todd Smith and one sister Terry Cummings (Herb Pierpoint); 3 step-sisters, Susan (Doug) Lilley, Julie (Scott) Steward, Amy (Mark) Matthias, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on December 17, 2004. Memorial contributions may be sent to the family at Terry Cummings, 7504 Houston Rd., Eaton Rapids.
Dolores E. Hosler
Dolores E. Hosler, age 92, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, March 19, 2004 in Eaton Rapids. Mrs. Hosler was born November 9, 1911 in Fort Wayne, IN, the daughter of Frank and Matilda (Linker) Warner. She had worked several years for Dr. Bert VanArk and later worked alongside her husband Hugh on the family Turkey Farm on Griffith Road. Mrs. Hosler was a member of the Griffith United Methodist Church, a past Worthy Matron and Life Member of the O.E.S. #241 in Eaton Rapids and was active at the Onondaga Senior Center. She enjoyed bowling and had played on several different leagues and was an avid golfer. Preceding her in death was her husband, Hugh, sister, Miriam Raymer and son-in-law, Door Ellsworth.
Surviving are 2 daughters; Beverly Ellsworth of Springport and Elizabeth (Richard) VanderMolen of Eaton Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Julie (Steve) Pierce of Eaton Rapids, Chris (Dana) Ellsworth of Springport, Kevin (Gisela) Ellsworth of Florida and Jess VanderMolen of Eaton Rapids; 2 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 23 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Jack Fugate and Rev. David McClintic, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Hamlin Township. Pallbearers will be Chris Ellsworth, Kevin Ellsworth, Steve Pierce, Richard VanderMolen, Jess VanderMolen and Mel Uhlbeck. The Brookfield O.E.S. #352 conducted funeral services on Monday evening. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Griffith United Methodist Church in memory of Dolores E. Hosler.
Esther Linda Howe
On October 7, 2004, surrounded by her loving family, the Matriach of the Howe family left us to join her beloved husband, Harold; loving sons, Fredrick James Howe and Walter Earl Howe, daughter-in-law, Ellie Howe; sisters, Vivian Warnacke and Betty Chambers, and her parents who have preceded her in death. Esther will be dearly missed by her daughters, Linda (Keith) Pettifor of Indianapolis, Indiana, Teri Howe of Eaton Rapids and son Bill (Marie) Howe of Bath; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great great-grandmother, aunt and friend, Esther took great pride in her family, which spanned five generations during her lifetime. She was especially fond and grateful for the smiles that each generation of children brought to her face. They were always a source of joy and comfort to her. While her passing has created a significant emptiness in all of our hearts, in time, that emptiness will give way to the wealth of fond memories we all had of her.
Esther was born the daughter of Fredrick and Marvel Elizabeth (Wickham) Dana on April 21, 1915 in Lansing. Esther graduated from Eastern High School, Class of 1933. On April 29, 1933 she married the love of her life, Harold Howe. They were married for 57 years before his passing in 1990 and resided in Eaton Rapids all their lives. Esther was a Life member of the Brookfield Order of the Eastern Star Lodge. During her life, she was employed at the Horner Woolen Mills, Lansing Dual Therm, Davidson Woolen Mills, Eaton Rapids IGA, Webster Lumber and Coal Company, Rapids Lumber Company and Howe Distributing.
Funeral services were held at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids on Monday, October 11, 2004 with interment following in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Our family wishes to express our heartfelt appreciation for the excellent care Esther received at the Sparrow Hospital Neurological Intensive Care and Rehabilitation Units as well as the Sparrow Hospice House. Thomas E. Hughes Jr.
Thomas E. Hughes Jr., 80, of Owosso, formerly of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 at Sparrow Health Systems.
Thomas was born July 26, 1924, the son of Thomas E. and Gertrude (Hyatt) Hughes Sr. and was raised in Charlotte. He is a graduate of Charlotte High School and attended Lansing Business College. He served in the 540th Engineer Regiment of the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Hughes was an accountant for Woodard’s, Redmond Motor Division, and Valley City Milling Company in Portland. On May 5, 1951 he married Mary Ciganick in Portland. Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a member of the American Legion #57 of Owosso, Knights of Columbus #1139 of Owosso, and the National Association of Accountants ELA – Saginaw Valley Chapter.
Survivors include his son, Gary R. Hughes of East Lansing; two sisters, Joyce Braithwaite Brickley of Traverse City, and Marlene (Bill) Needham of San Diego, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Lorna Hughes of Grand Ledge.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, on March 24, 1996; parents; and brother, Charles Hughes.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. David Fisher officiating. Burial was at St. Paul Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul School Special Education Program. Arrangements were by Nelson-House Funeral Home in Owosso.
