Brian K. LaValley Jr.

Brian Keith LaValley Jr., 18, of Sunfield, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004.

Brian was born Sept. 15, 1985 in Charlotte, the son of Brian Keith LaValley of Lansing and Lori Ann Parish of Sunfield, who survive.

He is also survived by brothers, Dylan Ray of Lansing, Marvin Cecil Steward of Sunfield; sister, Jessica Marie Smith of Sunfield; grandparents, Alfred and Catherine Jardot of Eaton Rapids, Chester Alan LaValley of Lansing, Patricia Janneta Southard of Grand Rapids; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial service was held April 10 at Charlotte Assembly of God, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Kelly R. Lee

Kelly R. Lee, 44, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

Miss Lee was born Dec. 29, 1959 in Lansing, the daughter of Gary and Nine (Abernathy) Lee. Kelly was a production worker for Titan Products. She enjoyed drawing, photography and animals.

She is survived by father, Gary Lee; brothers, Alan D. (Annette) Lee of Vermontville, Ralph D. Lee of Eaton Rapids; eight nieces and nephews, Jamie, Aaron, Andrea, Dillon, Aaron, Brianna, Brandy and Jaden; aunts, Debbie (Walt) Ribby of Eaton Rapids, Lisa Wood of Lansing, Lori Keyes (Kevin Frisbie) of Holt, Mary Abernathy of Kentucky; uncles, Sam (Floyce) Abernathy of Charlotte, Rich (Mary) Abernathy of Charlotte, Jeff (Sandy) Jester of Coloma; and grandmother, Gloria Abernathy of Lansing.

She was preceded in death by her mother Nine Lee in 2002, brothers Gary Lee Jr. in 1975 and Mark E. Lee in 1996.

Funeral services were held July 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Merle Bradley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton County Animal Shelter.

Robert “Bobby” James Lee

Robert “Bobby” James Lee, age 19, of Eaton Rapids, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, July 3, 2004. He was born July 31, 1984 in Austin, Texas, the son of James and Sonja (Bailey) Lee. He had a wonderful full sense of humor and was a joy to be around. He loved to laugh and tease his friends and family and loved his music, customized cars and pretty girls. Bobby will be truly missed; he has been through so much the past 2 years and has touched many lives. Now Bobby is at peace and at home with the Lord.

Surviving are his father and buddy, Jim Lee; mother and best friend, Sonja Lee, 2 siblings, Mathew Skyler and Desiree Afton Lee; grandparents, Fred and very special grandmother, Minnie Pifer of Eaton Rapids; Richard and Bonnie Bailey of Walker, MI; Bob and Sybil Lee; great-grandma, Bessie Campbell; aunts and uncles, Bill and Pat Campbell, his very special aunt, Glenda and Bud Walters, Brian and Rhonda Kozumplik, Pam and Donovan Greene, Rommie and Linda Bailey, and Harold Campbell; several cousins and many friends, including special friend Dustin Norris and Lewis Kidder of Eaton Rapids.

Funeral services will e held Wednesday, July 7 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial in the Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 3:00-5:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m.

Leilani K. Leik

Leilani K. Leik, 56, of Mulliken, died Saturday afternoon, Oct. 16, 2004.

Leilani was born April 5, 1948 in Hastings, a daughter of Gayle L. and Letha R. (Vedder) Bentley. She was a graduate of Lakewood High School and Calvin College. Leilani was the Roxand Township clerk for the past 14 years and was active in her church and various Roxand Township activities.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1978.

Surviving are her husband of 32 years, Donald; four children, Jerry Leik of Mount Pleasant, Jonathon Leik of aurora, Ill., Charles Leik of Lansing and Jennifer (Jason) Smith of Mulliken; granddaughter Elizabeth Marie Smith, mother Letha Bentley, brother Gale Bentley, and nephew Nicholas Bentley, all of Mulliken; three aunts, Velma (John) Marsh of Mulliken, Onalee (Reuben) Olsen of Owosso and Lucille Wint of Alma; one uncle, Keith (Roberta) Vedder of Charlotte; and several cousins.

Services were held Oct. 19 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken, with Pastor Don Woolum officiating. Interment was at Meadowbrook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jason Droste, Bill Feasal Jr., A.J. Marciano, Bill Roll, Jason Smith and Dana Traub.

Gwenith Lewis

Gwenith “Gwen” (Goodenough) Lewis, 66, of Portland, formerly of Charlotte and Bellevue, died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at her residence after an illness of 14 months.

Gwen was born June 6, 1938 in Lake Odessa, the daughter of Howard and Serena (Dillenbeck) Goodenough. She was a 1956 graduate of Vermontville High School, where she was a member of the high school band. She was the retired owner/operator of Oaklawn Adult Foster Care Home in Bellevue, which she had operated for 21 years. Prior to that she had been employed by Lloyd Eaton, the Ingham County Probate Court, the state of Michigan, the Michigan Conference of Seventh Day Adventists and Ren Plastics in Lansing. She was a member of the Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church. She enjoyed flowers and flower arranging.

Surviving are her husband, John H. Lewis, to whom she was married on Feb. 16, 1958; son, Michael Lewis of Jenison; daughter, Victoria (Jeffrey) Rick of Jackson; grandchildren, Justin and Ashley Lewis and John and Rachael Rick; two sisters, Helen (William) Swiger of Charlotte and Jackleen Hill of Colorado Springs; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Lewis of Charlotte, Betty Goodenough of Huntsville, Ala., and Juanita Goodenough of Colorado Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Louis and Larry Goodenough.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, 206 W. Lawrence Ave., Charlotte.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 14 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastors Charles Hanlon and Olin Thomas officiating. Interment will be at West Carmel Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist School, Jackson Seventh Day Adventist School or Great Lakes Hospice. The family expressed appreciation to Dr. Robert Rolle and Kathy Wilson and staff at the Natural Health Center in Charlotte, and to Denise Colestock of Eaton Rapids.

Anna Mae Lewis – Siegrist

Anna Mae Hine Lewis – Siegrist, 92, formerly of Charlotte, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 at her daughter’s home in Tucson, AZ. She was born Dec. 30, 1911, in Flint, the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth “Marie” (Van Tuyl) Hine. Anna Mae had a lifelong enjoyment and dedication to music, from being trained for the concert stage to having her own studio, as well as giving private piano lessons. A 1930 graduate of Charlotte High School, she furthered her education at Rockmont College of Denver, and Julliard Conservatory in Chicago. During WWII she attended St. Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing, and served with Ship’s Service in Portsmouth, VA. Her business career allowed her to serve as Human Resources Manager for Sears Roebuck in Holland and later as administrative assistant for Magnavox Furniture Division, Holland/Andrews N.C. She is survived by a son H. William D. “Bill” Lewis of Fremont, and a daughter Marilee Lewis of AZ, nine grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

John D. Liggett

John D. Liggett, age 86, of Olivet, died peacefully in his family’s loving arms Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte.

He was born April 26, 1917 in Walton Township, Eaton County, the son of David and Anna (Tarbox) Liggett and was a lifelong resident of Walton Township. He had served as manager of the Charlotte Country Club, was employed at Wilcox-Gay Co. in Charlotte, and most recently worked in the Trucks Dept. at Post Cereals in Battle Creek, from where he retired in 1978 after 32 years of service. He was a member of the Post 25 Year Club, was president of the Travel Trailer Club of Midwest and had wintered with his wife, Lillian, in Weslaco, Texas, for 20 years. What he loved to do was share the stories of his life.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian (Weakley) Liggett, to whom he had been a devoted husband for 65 years; two daughters, Carolyn (Ron) Campbell of Olivet and Janis (Jim) Anderson of Battle Creek; one son, Larry (Kathy) Liggett of Marshall; 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Margaret Irish of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by five sisters; Blanche Cochran, Josie Robbins, Hazel Winegar, Edith Liggett and Margaret Harris; and four brothers, Elmer, Shirley, Roy and Rollie Liggett.

Funeral services were held Jan. 26 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Matt Rohdy officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice.

Beverly M. Locke

Beverly M. Locke, age 70, of Eaton Rapids died Sunday, March 14, 2004, in Eaton Rapids. Beverly was born, Nov. 3, 1933 in Springport Twp. the daughter of Philo M. and Bethel Beatrice “Betty” (Chesley) Squires. She graduated from Leslie High School in 1952 and worked for a short time for the State of Michigan before starting her family. Beverly was very devoted to her husband and family. While raising her children she belonged to the Child Guidance Group. She was also employed with W.R. Thomas and Toys for Tots for a short time. Beverly loved to square dance with the Bucks and Does Club. While her husband was a volunteer firefighter and ambulance driver for 22 years, she was very active with the Eaton Rapids Volunteer Fireman’s Women’s Auxiliary. She was a volunteer for the Union St. School and then worked for the Eaton Rapids Middle School as a lunchroom aide. Beverly was a member of the Genealogy Society in Charlotte.

Preceded in death by her brother, Jack Squires in 1958, she is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lawrence L. of Eaton Rapids; children, Deborah Hartwell, Wayne Locke, Kenneth (Julie) Locke, James (Ann) Locke all of Eaton Rapids; 8 grandchildren, Stacey Locke, Nicole and Jason Locke, Josh, Amanda, Michael and Kristen Locke, Andrew and Camren Locke; great grandson, Marcell Locke-Ketchum; and one brother, Bob Squires.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shelly Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Frank Klassen, Pastor of the Wesleyan Church, officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and Wednesday, from 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the City of Eaton Rapids Fire Department in memory of Beverly Locke.

Phyllis M. Lovell-Pettis

Phyllis M. Lovell-Pettis, age 72, died July 9, 2004 in Florida. Phyllis was born Oct. 14, 1931 in Wyandott, the daughter of Merle and Edith (Horrock) Knickerbocker. She retired from the State of Michigan, Dept. of Agriculture in 1990 after 23 years of service, and resided in Fort Myers, Florida for the past 15 years, moving there from Lansing.

Surviving are 3 children, Susie (Billy) Bergdolld of Evanston, IL, Steven DeWaters of Grand Ledge, Shari Horwath of Holt; 5 grandchildren, Jason (Andrea) DeWaters, Joshua Horwath, Jamie Horwath, Tamara Edelstein, Angela (Sherwood, Sr.) Jones; 5 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jerry (Jane) Knickerbocker of Osseo, Larry Knickerbocker of Olivet; sister, Shirley (Jerry) Wolf of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids with Father Bennett Constantine officiating. Interment of cremains will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Those desiring may make contributions to Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, FL in memory of Phyllis M. Pettis.
