Kathryn L. Mahan

Kathryn L. Mahan, 66, of New Port Richey, Fla., died Sept. 9, 2004 at her residence.

Kathryn was born in Lansing and moved to Florida 10 years ago, coming from Charlotte. She was employed in corporate sales and was a member of Magnolia Valley Golf Club and Eastern Star in Michigan. She attended St. Marks Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Patrick; one son, Mark Barnett of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Gale Geech of Phoenix, Ariz.; two stepsons, Shane Mahan of Agora Hills, Calif. And Christopher Mahan of Marietta, Ga.; three sisters, Beverly Trumley of Charlotte, Joyce Derks of Bozeman, Mont. And Carol Thompson of California; one brother, Harry James of Venice, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial is planned in New Port Richey on Sept. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church.

Joyce A. Marietta

Joyce Ann Marietta, 71, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Oct. 18, 2004 in Lansing.

Joyce was a lifetime area resident, a graduate of Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1952; was co-owner of Miller’s Old Mill Restaurant and an avid BMX bicycle racing fan.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Paul; four children, Tom (Teresa) Marietta, Kathy (Vance) Saunders and Debbie Canfield, all of Eaton Rapids, and Steve Marietta of Flint; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sharon (Terry) Perkins of Chippewa Lake and Phyllis (Thomas) Murray of Grand Ledge; one brother, Duane (Linda) Harris; one sister-in-law, Esther Harris; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Mary Marietta of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held Oct. 21 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Steve Klink officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Hamlin Township, Eaton County.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Gertrude L. Marshall

Gertrude L. Marshall, 92, of Bellevue, left this world peacefully to join her Lord Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.

She was born July 8, 1911 in LaPort, Ind., the daughter of Verne and Lois (Woodard) McKee. She graduated in 1929 from Lee High School in Grand Rapids and attended Grand Rapids Junior College and Olivet College. On Sept. 10, 1932 she married C. Earl Marshall, in Angola, Ind. They moved to the Bellevue area in 1938 where she resided until her death. She and Earl owned and operated a farm. Gertrude was active in the Convis Township government and was a former township supervisor and treasurer. She also served as a school census taker. She owned and operated the Stock Yard Restaurant at the Michigan Livestock Exchange in Battle Creek from 1960 to 1971, when she retired. She and her husband operated a foster care home for children at their residence from the 1940s through the 1970s. She was a member of Bellevue United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau since 1948 and AARP. She enjoyed hooking rugs, knitting, crocheting, making quilts and gardening. She wintered in Sebring, Fla., since 1979.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Earl on Dec. 20, 1986; her parents; sister, Bea Lee; and brothers, Vern, Roger, James, Maurice and Richard McKee.

Surviving are sister, Dorma Hocket of Sebring, Fla.; nieces, Rosemarie McKee of Bellevue, Lois (Clark) Hillaker of Florida, Ann (Tom) Dennis of Colorado, Ruth Lee of Belmont, Marijoan (Howard) Corey of Florida, Joyce (Ray) Sobota of Tennessee, Judy (Ron) Holcomb of Jonesville, and Audrey (Bob) Wesner of Battle Creek; nephews, Larry Lee (Laverne) of Rockford, Kenneth Carpenter of Florida, Dale (Jackie) Spotts of Newaygo, David (Barb) MeKee of Marshall, Neil (Joan) Spotts and Bill Spotts, both of Michigan, and many other great nieces and nephews.

Services were held Jan. 27 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue. Interment was at Austin Cemetery in Convis Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bellevue United Methodist Church.

June V. Marple

June V. Marple, 88, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004.

Mrs. Marple was born June 15, 1916 in Charlotte, the daughter of Clarence and Augusta (Palmer) Roberts. Mrs. Marple was a receptionist for Dr. Joseph Riley and for the Public Library in Charlotte. She was a member of the Charlotte Congregational Church, the Mary Martha Circle, Southside Mother’s Club, and the Eaton County Medical Assistance Association. She enjoyed needlework and playing the organ.

She is survived by son Donald W. Marple of Holt, son Robert D. Marple of Charlotte, daughters Elaine M. (Norman) Milbourn of Charlotte and Joyce A. (William) Scott of Eaton Rapids, and son Kenneth L. Marple of Eaton Rapids; 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law Harriet Roberts of Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dorance W. Marple, in 1976; brother, Lester Roberts in 2002; daughter-in-law, Michelle Marple in 2000; and grandson, Matthew Scott in 2002.

Funeral services were held Oct. 22 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Phil Hobson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Public Library.

Anita T. Martin

Anita Theresa Martin, 84, of Charlotte, died Saturday, April 17, 2004 surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Martin was born Feb. 23, 1920 in St. Johns, the daughter of Herman and Josephine (Schafer) Rademacher. She served for many years as a customer service representative with Michigan National Bank, retiring in 1980. She married her husband Arthur Jan. 31, 1942, who preceded her in death in 1998. She had been a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild. She worked on the St. Patrick Day dinners and enjoyed gardening, dewing, her angel collection, and shopping.

She is survived by sons, Paul (Sharon) Martin of Traverse City, Thomas (Barbara) Martin of Lansing, William (Sally) Martin of Vermontville, Richard Martin and Brian (Romona) Martin, both of Charlotte; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernadine Fedewa of Grand Ledge, Mary Dingler of Lansing; brothers, Richard (Martha) Rademacher of North Carolina and Robert (Catherine) Rademacher of Lansing; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was celebrated April 20 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. William Lugger as celebrant. Interment was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Lansing.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Ina Mauney

Ina (Willis) Mauney, 90, of Charlotte, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2004.

Mrs. Mauney was born March 2, 1914 in Charlotte, the daughter of Truman and Clara (Bauer) Willis and was a devoted mother and grandmother who touched the lives of all she knew with her love and caring. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

Surviving are her son, Martin (Laura) Mauney; daughters, Clara Fast and Linda (David) Stafford; nine grandchildren, David (Ronda) Stafford, Meaghan Stafford, Sherri (Rand) Crandell, Micki Smith, Kim Fast, Tracy Symonds, Michael (Darie) Mauney, and Josh (Sue) Mauney; 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Iva Brock, Evelene (James) Pyne and Glenna Crisswell; two sister-sin-law, Lorene Willis and Irma Willis; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Martin Mauney in 1983; brothers, Forrest, Homer, Alton and infant Clinton Willis; and sisters, Violet, Belva and Lillie.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with John Bailey, minister of Charlotte Church of Christ, officiating. Interment will be at Hillside (Kalamo) Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Charlotte Church of Christ or Eaton Community Hospice. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Myrtle E. May

Myrtle E. May, age 85, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, July 4, 2004 in Eaton Rapids. Myrtle was born December 25, 1918 in Aurelius, the daughter of Roy and Irma (Ellsworth) Hyatt. Myrtle and her husband Waldo owned Longacres Dairy Farm for over 35 years. Myrtle was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church and the Eaton County Farm Bureau. She was the Eaton Rapids Township Treasurer for 34 years, a member of Michigan Townships Association and was instrumental in establishing the Eaton Rapids Township Fire Department in 1988.

Preceded in death by her husband, Waldo E. May in 1974, daughter, Charlene Hice and granddaughter, Connie Hice, Myrtle is survived by 1 son, Marvin (Patty) May of Bybee, TN; 2 grandchildren, Ryan May and Carol (Brian) Anderson; 2 great grandchildren, Ben and Connie; and several nieces and nephews. Very special thanks to Terry and Michelle of Country Comfort AFC for the wonderful care given to Myrtle over the past 5 years.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 7, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home with Rev. Marty DeBow officiating. Interment will follow at Munger Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive family and friends on Tuesday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Robbins United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Assoc. in memory of Myrtle May.

Elizabeth Mellon

Elizabeth A. Mellon, 77, “Betty” to her myriad friends, professional colleagues and family, passed away early morning on Jan. 12, 2004, following a short illness. Betty was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 29, 1926, to Sherman H. and Hazel (Duncan) Palmer.

A 1944 graduate of Rock Springs, Wyoming High School, she earned her BS degree (home economics) in 1948 at Iowa State University. Her further studies included a fellowship at Merrill Palmer Institute (BS in early childhood education 1949) and MA, Michigan State University (family and child services/special education, 1967). In spite of suffering devastating early adult polio attach and continuing post polio syndrome resulting in a long-time struggle with personal health, she retained an exceptionally keen and active sense of humor. She was an avid and dedicated children’s advocate, serving the Girl Scout movement, for some 25 years, active in early childhood education, cooperative nursery schools (a founding member of Charlotte’s Cooperative Nursery School) general education early elementary teaching (1st grade), special education/consulting, and teaching hospital/homebound and learning disabled children. She devoted a total of 28 years in special education as teacher and consultant, retiring after serving as one of Michigan’s initially trained and designated special education curriculum resource consultants (Eaton Intermediate School District).

Throughout her adult years, she developed an active and studied interest in “antiquing”, with a special interest and study of miniature antique dolls and collecting glass figurines. She long held active memberships in the Eaton Antique Club and the Greater Lansing Area Doll Club. Other professional associations (educational) included the Michigan and National Education Associations (MEA/NEA) included also as a retiree.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 31 years, William E. Mellon, sister Deon Palmer Smith (Wyoming), son Martin S. Wilcox (New Mexico), daughter Mary Wilcox Whitson (Maryville, TN), Douglas Whitson (son-in-law - Maryville, TN), Sylvia Dawson, (daughter-in-law Bernalillo, New Mexico) and grandchildren, Christopher B. Wilcox (Ann Arbor), Cayenne Wilcox (Flint), Robyn and Hannah Wilcox (Bernalillo, New Mexico), Caleb (Melia) Whitson (Knoxville, Tennessee), Jared Whitson, Isaac (Emily) Whitson and Ezra White (Nashville, Tennessee), Levi, Abigail and Naomi Whitson (Maryville, Tennessee), Lara (Troy) Hudson (Aurora, Colorado) and great-grandchildren, Olivia R. and Ian C. Whitson (Knoxville, Tennessee).

A memorial will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 201 W. Shepherd, Charlotte at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24 with the Reverend Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte or to the Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte in Betty’s name.
