Carroll L. Parr
Carroll L. Parr, 80, of Burlington, formerly of Bellevue, died Saturday, April 10, 2004 at Tendercare Riverside Manor in Battle Creek.
He was born June 1, 1923 in Walton Township to Forrest and Edith (Vaha) Parr. He enjoyed antique tractors and gardening.
Graveside services were held April 13 at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue, with Pastor B. Mason Shambach officiating.
Memorial donations may go to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home.
Walter D. Payne Jr.
Walter Dee Payne Jr. 45, of Bellevue, died Monday, March 15, 2004 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
He was born Sept. 13, 1958 to Walter D. and Lorraine (Hallock) Payne in Battle Creek. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1976 and worked for Twin Valley Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician for 28 years.
Walter is survived by his wife, Carlotta (Madry) Payne, who he married on Sept. 20, 1997. His first marriage to JoAnn (Ehrlich) Payne of Battle Creek ended in divorce. Also surviving are daughters, Courtney Payne and Lisa Payne of Battle Creek; stepsons, Mitchell Eggerstedt, D.J. Eggerstedt and Kevin Eggerstedt, all of Bellevue; father, Walter-Payne Sr. of Battle Creek; sisters, Debbie (Asa) Kempton of Marshall and Joan (Thomas) Gray of Indiana; brother, Bob (Pauline) Dermyer of Addison.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine Payne and sister, Patricia Swain.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Sons of the American Legion, a previous member of the Battle Creek Bass Casters, the Michigan Steel Header Association and Michigan Pharmacists Association. He volunteered at the Battle Creek Hot Air Balloon Championship for 14 years. Walt enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and bowling. He loved his family most of all. He was a great father and stepfather, the best friend anyone could ever have, and a very supportive husband.
Services were held March 20 at the Bellevue Christian Center, with Pastor Steve Covert officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the family. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Hildred L. Kelsey Peabody
Hildred Louise Kelsey Peabody, 88, of Vermontville, died Saturday, March 13, 2004 at Ingham Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Peabody was born Aug. 12, 1915 in Sunfield, the daughter of Clare and Ethol May (Gearhart) Figg. A life-long resident of Vermontville, Hildred graduated from Vermontville High School in 1933. She attended Eaton County Normal and began her lifelong career as a teacher in 1935, teaching at the Chance and Brown country schools. IN 1940 she took a break from teaching to raise a family and help her husband run a small-town medical practice in Vermontville. She returned to her teaching career in 1958 at the Lamie Country School and began working on her bachelor’s degree and eventually earned a master’s degree in elementary counseling at Western Michigan University. From 1960 until her retirement in 1980 Hildred taught third grade and was the elementary counselor/special education coordinator for Maple Valley schools. An active and dedicated supporter of her community, Hildred served on the Vermontville Community Schools Board of Education and Vermontville Village Council. She was a founding member and past president of the Vermontville Historical Society, a founding member and past president of the Vermontville Woman’s Club, a member and past worthy matron of Vermontville chapter of Eastern Star, and past president of United Methodist Women. She was also an active volunteer in the annual Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival, serving in many roles over the past 60 years including festival princess, past chair of the children’s parade, program chair, and chair of the Vermontville arts and crafts show. Recognized for her contributions to the festival, she was selected as the Syrup Festival’s Honored Citizen in 1986. She was very involved in the Republican Party, serving on the Republican State Central Committee during the 1950s, and had been president of the Eaton County Republican women. She was a past district president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, an active member and past president of the Upsilon Chapter in the Delta Kappa Gamma (Honorary Teachers) Sorority.
She is survived by daughters, Nancy (John) Leindecker of Lexington, Ky., Becky (Paul) Strange of Libertyville, Ill.; son, Douglas C. Kelsey of Vermontville; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many close nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. L. Donald Kelsey in 1958, and second husband R. Kenyon Peabody in 1981.
Funeral services were held March 16 at Vermontville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Kathy Smith officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Maple Valley Scholarship Fund or the Vermontville United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Ada M. Pegg
Ada M. Pegg, 66, of Marshall, formerly of Bellevue, died Oct. 22, 2004 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall.
She was born Jan. 3, 1938 to Russell and Martha (Hallax) Stevens in Battle Creek. She graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1958 and worked as a nurse’s aide in Battle Creek and Fort Wayne, Ind. She enjoyed being outdoors and knitting.
Ada is survived by daughters, Debbie (Tom) Critchlow of Marshall, Laura (Thomas) Whitworth of Fort Wayne; son, Michael (Ronda) Gosnell of LaGrange, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; mother, Martha Stevens of Battle Creek; sisters, Nancy Magrum, Elizabeth Hartson and Christina Chadwick, all of Battle Creek; and brother, John Stevens of South Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her father, Russell Stevens, and a sister, Ruth Stevens.
Services were held Oct. 26 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Virginia Heller, Bellevue First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was at Hicks Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Carla M. Pentecost
Carla Marie Pentecost, 75, passed away Monday, March 22, 2004 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Carla is formerly from Vermontville, where she retired from the Eaton County School District as a legal secretary. She attended Nashville Baptist Church in Nashville.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Ron Taylor of Nashville, Tenn.; granddaughter, Nicole Myers and twin grandson, Adam and Aaron Myers, all of Nashville, Tenn.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Humane Society. Arrangements were by Phillips Robinson Funeral Home in Nashville, Tenn.
Constance L. Peterson
Constance L. “Connie” Peterson, 61, of Charlotte, formerly of Lansing, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004.
Connie was born March 26, 1943 in Ingham County. She was a long-time employee of CVS Pharmacy as a photo coordinator who enjoyed serving her customers.
Connie is survived by her husband of 37 years, Wayne Peterson; sons, Tom (Carol) Pell of Charlotte and Russell Peterson of Sunfield; daughter, Janine (Don) Thompson of Nashville; grandchildren, Jeremy Pell, Josh Pell, Crystal Thompson, Jatana Hisler, Amy Thompson and Sam Thompson; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Gaven and CJ; and four sisters, Betsy, Judy, Carolyn and Kayti.
Services will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Peterson family at 341 N. Bostwick, Charlotte, MI 48813. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
James E. Pettis
James E. Pettis, age 55, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday October 6, 2004 in Lansing. James was born Aug. 13, 1949 in Saginaw. He was the son of William Arthur and Helen Elizabeth (Nelson) Pettis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines serving in View Nam, a life member of the VFW Post 1283 and retired from the Lakeland Correctional Facility. He was preceded in death by 2 grandsons, Michael and James Tamlyn.
Surviving are his wife of 15 years, Victoria; 5 daughters, Tammy Holloway, Lisa (Tony) Benavidez, Michelle (Steve) Roper, Amanda Albin all of Lansing, Christina Stefanick of Elgin AFB; 2 sons, Jay Pettis of Lansing, Art Tamlyn of Webberville; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Sue (Bob) Little of Alma, Ann E. (Larry) Drake of Flint; several nieces, nephews and foster mother, Mary Gates of Eaton Rapids.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 8, 2004, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Dr. Jessie James officiating. Interment and military honors followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the Breslin Cancer Center in memory of James.
Donaldeen Pettit
Donaldeen Pettit, age 82, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at a Lansing Hospital. Donaldeen was born March 15, 1922 in Springport, Calhoun County, the daughter of Ladd and Eva May (Courtright) Starks. Donaldeen had attended grade schools at Springport and Clarence Center and graduated from the Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1940. In 1945 she married Hallett E. Pettit and resided in California where he was stationed in the Navy. After military service they moved back to Eaton Rapids and worked and co-owned the Pettit Hardware which has been in their family for well over 100 years. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and a volunteer for the Eaton Rapids Medical Center, Hospital Auxiliary. Preceding her in death was her husband Hallett Pettit on June 8, 2001; sisters, Fidema Higdon and Betty Webb.
Surviving are her 3 children, Hal C. Pettit of Eaton Rapids, Jack (Susan) Pettit of Lansing and Pamela (Charles) Torossian of Eaton Rapids; 4 grandchildren, Brenda (Phillip) McGarry, Scott (Terri) Pettit, Jennifer (Michael) Carducci and Valerie Torossian; 6 great-grandchildren, Cameron Alfrey, Chad LaJoice, Olivia Pettit, Ellie, Adam and Emma McGarry; sister, Sharon (Jack) Love of Springport; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 28, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial will follow at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to either the First Congregational Church, Make A Wish Foundation of Michigan (Cameron Alfrey), or to a charity of one’s choice.
