Florence A. Phillips

Florence A. Phillips, 80, of Lacy, passed away Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.

Mrs. Phillips was born July 15, 1923 In Battle Creek, the daughter of Harley and Amy (VanWagner) Abbott. She was raised in the Battle Creek area and attended area schools there. She spent most of her life in the Lacy area, where she raised her family. She was employed as a dietary aide at The Martin Luther Holt Home until her retirement in the early 1980s. After her retirement, Florence enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching soap operas during the day. But she found true happiness in the time spent with her beloved children and grandchildren.

She is survived by he children, Karold (Marilyn) Lake, Kenneth (Melinda) Lake, Kathy (Art) Simmons, and Kerry (Jill) Lake, Kent (Carol) Lake; brother, John Abbott; sister, Louise Keltner; 20 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Karold Lake Sr., who passed away in 1969, and Marion Phillips, who passed away in 1983; two brothers, Ernst and Albert; and one sister, Martha.

Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville, with Pastors Kerry Lake and Kenneth Lake officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barry Community Foundation – Thornapple Manor Fund.

Ronald Gordon Phillips

Ronald Gordon Phillips, age 69, of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at his residence. Ronald was born October 6, 1935, in Deckerville, Michigan, the son of the late Elmer and Ethel May Phillips. He graduated with honors from Michigan State University in 1960 and received his Master degree in 1964. He taught high school math of 20 years, 18 at Eaton Rapids High School where he also assisted as a football and basketball coach for a number of years. He served 2 years as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Ron is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara; daughter, Gwendolyn, of Cheboygan, MI; son, Clinton (Diane) and grandsons, Spencer and Mitchell of Catasauqua, PA; sister, Violet Whittaker of Salem, OR; brothers, Allan (Carmen) of Mayaguez, PR, Roger (Barbara) of Avoca, MI, and Gerald (Barbara) of Sugar Land, TX; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Yurick of Latrobe, PA and Joan Kozar of Ft. Walton Beach, Fl; special niece and nephews, Chris & Dr. Russ Piper, Nathan, Zachary & Sean of Washington, PA; along with many other special nieces & nephews.

It was a hard battle Ron fought against Multiple Sclerosis that lasted over 35 years. He was an avid sports fan and followed his favorite teams on television and in the newspaper. Go Greyhounds, Spartans, Tigers, Cubs, Lions and Army!

We would like to thank the many people who gave him encouragement and provided care so he could remain at home. Thank You to Dr. Courtnage and staff; Dr. Curry and Pam; Barry-Eaton Home Health/Hospice, especially PEG, DEBBIE and JOYCE; Eaton Community Hospice; Gene from Hair Care; Otto Harns; and friend, Joe Honsowitz.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. from the First Congregational Church in Eaton Rapids. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton community Hospice, 2675 S. Cochran St., Charlotte, MI 48813 or envelopes are available at the Skinner Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.

Phillip Pickett

Phillip Wayne Pickett, 55, of Charlotte, died Oct. 13, 2004. Mr. Pickett was born Aug. 25, 1949, in West Branch, the son of L.L. and Georgia (Kackley) Pickett.

Phil was a member of the Ainger Bible Church where his life was Christ centered and he was a teacher, Board member, song leader, and giving of his time maintaining the facilities and serving the Lord. He was also a member of the V.F.W., DAV, and Teamsters. He enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing, football and sports. He was a truck driver and worked 16 years for Gra-Bell Trucking and for Behnke Trucking in Battle Creek for the past eight years. He is survived by his wife of 34 years whom he loved, Joann (Davis) Pickett, his dog Hannah, his parents; Buck and Georgia of Whittemore, sisters Juanita (Barry) Tippett of Livonia, Marion Bigelow of Hillman, Althea (Ron) Heldt of Barron, Wis., brothers, Larry (Janette) Pickett and Stephen (Bonnie) Pickett of Whittemore, five sisters-in-law, six brothers in law, many nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral service was Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004 at Ainger Bible Church, Olivet, with Pastor Scott Brood officiating. Interment is 2 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Valley Cemetery in Twining.

Beverly J. Pierce

Beverly J. Pierce, age 66, of Jackson, formerly of Leslie, died Tuesday, October 26, 2004 in Jackson. Beverly was born August 24, 1937 in Eaton Rapids. She was a cook at Camp Highfields and Felskey’s Restaurant in Leslie. Beverly was preceded in death by her father, Robert M. Root and former husband Frank Pierce.

Surviving are her nephew, Kody Bergman of Jackson; 4 sons, Bob, Doug and Frank Pierce all of Leslie, Dale Pierce of Pleasant Lake; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-granddaughter; mother, Josephine Caldwell of Eaton Rapids; 2 sisters, Roberta (Clyde) Bergman of Jackson, Pauline Liner of Ohio and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Monday, November 1, 2004, at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Cancer Society in memory of Beverly J. Pierce.

Roberta J. Plummer

Roberta Joan (Zibbell) Plummer, 90, of Olivet, died Monday, March 8, 2004.

Mrs. Plummer was born March 25, 1913 in Chico, Calif., the daughter of Robert and Cordelia (Skinner) Zibbell and had resided in Olivet since 1948. She attended Ionia High School, graduated from Holland High School, attended Hope College in Holland and graduated in 1936 from Western Michigan Teacher’s College in Kalamazoo. She taught school and coached for 40 years in Montague, Belding and Olivet Community Schools, from where she retired. She was a member of the Olivet Rotary and Olivet Fire Department auxiliaries, a member of Olivet congregational Church and its Women’s Fellowship, the Marshall Moose Lodge, the Olivet College Women’s Board and the Olivet Community Schools HOST (help One Student Succeed) program. She enjoyed bowling with friends, was a former Red Cross swimming lifeguard, a beautiful seamstress and owned and raised springer spaniel and schnauzer dogs. She enjoyed attending Olivet High School sporting events, where she had her own personal parking spot at football games, and with her husband had taken many trips in their motor home, camping, fishing and Florida.

Surviving are her children, Rachel (Ronald) Harvitt of Charlotte, Robert Plummer of Olivet and Martha (Richard) O’Dell of Olivet; grandchildren, Deborah (James) Wells of Charlotte, Pamela (Craig) Coombs of McGraw, N.Y., Michael (Lori) Harvitt of Grand Haven, Jeffrey (fiancée Katie Conley) O’Dell of Olivet and Gregory (Anna) O’Dell of Olivet; 10 great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Leon Plummer in 1999, and son David Plummer in 1959.

Funeral services were held March 11 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte, with Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Interment was at Olivet Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet Congregational Church or the Roberta Plummer Athletic Fund at Olivet Schools.

Douglas H. Pennington

Douglas H. Pennington, 47, of Bellevue, died suddenly Jan. 25, 2004 in Bellevue.

He was born on April 14, 1956, the son of Raymond and Pearl (Skip) Pennington in Battle Creek. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1975 and worked as a construction worker for Laborers Union Local 355 since 1979. Doug married Vickie Damon of Bellevue on Feb. 23, 1980. He was a devoted husband and father and will be missed by his wife, Vickie, son, Douglas Robert, and dog, Harley. Doug loved to go morel mushroom hunting and asparagus picking every spring. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved to hunt and fish.

Preceding Doug in death was his mother, Pearl Pennington in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, Douglas Robert Pennington of Bellevue; father, Raymond Pennington of Bellevue; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Marian Damon of Bellevue; brothers, David (Amy) Pennington of Bellevue, Darrel (Becky) Pennington of Galesburg; sister, Debbie (Earl) Slack of Battle Creek; brothers and sisters-in-law, Duane (LuAnn) Damon of Marshall, Daniel (Peggy) Damon of Battle Creek, Rick (Debra) Gardner and Pamela Damon, both of Bellevue; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Jan. 28 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Steve Olmstead officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or American Cancer Society.

Lawrence L. Perry

Lawrence L. Perry of Charlotte, age 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004 at John and Roxanne Moore’s Country Living AFC Home.

Lawrence was born April 4, 1916 in Olivet the son of Stanley and Rhea (Krebs) Perry and had been a Charlotte resident since 1940. He was a 1934 graduate of Olivet High School, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired mail carrier from the Charlotte Post Office. He was past commander and life member of the Greenwalt-Flaherty Post #42 American Legion, held life memberships in the Charlotte Lions Club, Olivet Masonic Lodge #267 and Charlotte Masonic Lodge #120, Charlotte Commandery #37 K.T., Horace Maynard Chapter #82 R.A.M., the Scottish Rite Valley of Grand Rapids, the Saladin Shrine of Grand Rapids and Eaton Area Senior Center. He was a member of the Eaton County Shrine Club, the Eaton County Mini 50’s, the Eaton County Buck Club, long time member of the Charlotte First Congregational Church and the Duck Lake Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Genevieve (Hooper) Perry in 1998; brother, Vinton Perry in 1999; brother-in-law, Milton Briggs in 1999 and daughter-in-law, Sandra Perry in 1989.

Surviving are sons, Rowland (Marilyn) Perry and Neil (Lana) Perry, both of Charlotte; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Lola Dutcher; brother, George (Ruth) Perry of Olivet; sister, Delores Briggs of Grand Rapids; and sister-in-law, Martha “Peggy” Perry of Olivet.

Funeral services were held Jan. 21 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Philip Hobson officiating, and a Masonic memorial service was held Jan. 20. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Barry-Eaton Health Department Hospice or the Shiner’s Children’s Hospital; envelopes available at the funeral home.

William L. Piepkow

William Lee “Willee” Piepkow of Olivet, died Tuesday May 18, 2004 at the age of 5 years.

Willee was born July 21, 1998 in Marshall, to his parents Travis and Heather (Chaney) Piepkow. He had endured a number of health challenges over the past three years until his passing on Tuesday in Foote Hospital in Jackson. Willee enjoyed being around his many family members and especially loved the excitement of family card parties, and tagging along while his dad and grandpas played golf. He was thrilled to watch the animals in the barnyard of the family farms and was overjoyed Tuesday when he caught his first fish all by himself.

Willee is survived by his mother and father; his brother Mason and sister Brooke; his paternal grandmother, Carol Davis of Olivet; paternal grandfather, William and Melanie Piepkow of Olivet; maternal grandparents, Carol and Terry Chaney of Charlotte; great-grandparents, Paul and Blanche Piepkow of Charlotte, and Robert and Winona Davis of Battle Cree; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and his best friend, a Black Lab named Buddy.

Funeral services were held May 21 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Keith Laidler officiating.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the “Willee Fund” at Eaton Federal Savings Bank. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
