Theophile Schneider
Theophile “Frenchie” Schneider, 74, of Charlotte, died at his home Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004.
Mrs. Schneider was born April 25, 1930 in Epping (Moselle) France, the son of Jean Pierre and Anna (Frumholz) Schneider. Frenchie came to America on Nov. 11, 1952 on the SS United States and went to Saranac, Mich., to help relatives on their farm. He went to work for Fisher Body in Lansing on March 17, 1953 and retired from General Motors May 1, 1992. He married Alice Faye Vertz of L’Anse Mich., on July 6, 1957. They had five children, Mary Ann, John, Michelle, Mark and Renee. He lived in Charlotte since 1959 and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by son, Mark Steven Schneider of Charlotte; his parents; a brother, Albert Schneider; two sisters, Therese Marshall and Claire Brobst; a nephew, Ashille Hemmert; and a niece, Sylvaine (Schneider) Donner, all of France.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Vertz); and four children, Mary Ann Bartlett (fiancé Dean Erickson) of Dimondale, John (Sherry) Schneider of Grand Ledge, Michelle (Rick) Wireman of Springport, Renee (Mike) Johnson of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Shaun (Jennifer) Bartlett of Charlotte, Nikyta Schneider of Florida, Mathhew and Steven Wireman of Springport, and Nathan and Amy Schneider of Grand Ledge; two great grandchildren, Damon and Dakota Bartlett of Charlotte; sisters, Elise Hemmert and Anna Schoepp; brother, Jean Schneider; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral Mass was held Aug. 25 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
William R. Schreiner
William R. Schreiner, 66, of Elgin, Ill., formerly of Charlotte, passed away Jan. 2, 2004 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Ill.
He was born Jan. 18, 1937, the son of Ronald and Leida (Oberly) Schreiner.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Nancy (Burger); two grandchildren, Henry Ronald Jr. and Katlyn Schreiner; three sisters, Connie, Joyce and Edith; a brother, James; a half-brother, Robert; a great grandchild; his “adopted daughter,” Andrea Bass; and his dog, Buddy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Henry Ronald Sr. and Michael Ernest; one brother, Reid; and two sisters, Cora and Evelyn.
A memorial service was held May 1 at 1 p.m. at Crossroads United Brethren Church in Charlotte.
Arrangements were by Madison Funeral Home in Elgin, Ill.
Clyde H. Schrock
Clyde H. Schrock, 86, of Battle Cree, formerly of Bellevue and Keystone Heights, Fla., died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at home.
He was born Jan. 24, 1918 in Elkhart County, Ind. To Harry and Florence (Archer) Schrock and graduated from White Pigeon High School in Michigan. As a young man he played high school football, baseball and fought Golden Gloves Amateur boxing competition. He was athlete of the year his senior year at White Pigeon High School. Clyde served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as a Radioman Second Class on the D.E. George A. Johnston in the American, European and Asiatic theaters. He was awarded two Philippine Liberation Medals. He served as the postmaster of Bellevue from 1962 to 1972. He also farmed and ran a tree nursery during the same period. He was a member of First Baptist Church and the Christian Missionary Alliance. He was a singer with a beautiful voice and played guitar. He also enjoyed travel, his family and golf. Clyde marred E. Geraldine (Babcock) Potter on Jan. 1, 1974; she survives.
Also surviving are sons, Dr. Roger (Linda) Schrock of Mendon and Lyle (Sue) Schrock of Rockwall, Texas; daughter, Dr. Joyce (Philip) Bruton of Rockwall, Texas, also Ron (Jill) Potter of Ann Arbor, Dena (Jim) Miller of Nashville, Ed (Ramona) Potter of Bellevue and Nancy (Jimmie) Hughes of Georgia; 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren; and sister, Irene Oldenburg of White Pigeon.
He was preceded in death by his wife Venice Rogers and brothers, Reno and Archie Schrock.
Graveside services were held July 24 at White Pigeon Cemetery, with Pastor Don Francis officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bellevue First Baptist Church, Bellevue, MI 49021.

Bonnie C. Sears
Mrs. Bonnie C. Sears, 64, of Vermontville, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004 in Vermontville.
Mrs. Sears was born in Vermontville, on Sept. 9, 1940, the daughter of the late George R. and Rita C (Kimmel) Thomason. She was raised in the Vermontville area, and attended the B School for years, but finished her education in the Augusta area. In 1957 in Charlotte, she married Robert Sears. The couple spent their early year’s together living in the Nashville area until settling at their current residence in Vermontville in 1975, where they raised their family.
Bonnie enjoyed spending time with her family. Along with her husband, Robert, the couple enjoyed their winters together in Bowling Green Florida at the Wagon Wheel RV Park. While in Florida, Bonnie would pursue her love of bingo by visiting the Seminole Indian Reservation, as well as participating in various bingo events at their park. She was also very fond of yard sales, where she would purchase knickknacks of all different types for her collections. She was a member of the Nashville VFW #8260.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Brenda (and special friend Dennis Ward) Sears, Lori (and special friend Dean Denning) Tobey, Ronnie (Jayne) Sears, David (Lyndy) Sears; sisters, Beverly (Adolf) Roth, Barbara (Joseph) Jones; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her four brothers, Royal, Richard, Larry and George, and her granddaughter, Jennifer Louise McKelvey.
Funeral services were held Oct. 16 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.

Thorgny J. Segerlind
Thorgny J. “TJ” “Carl” Segerlind, 101, died Sunday, May 16, 2004 in Delta Township.
Mr. Segerlind was born in Halsingborg, Sweden, on Jan. 11, 1903 to Ludwig and Thelma Segerlind. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1916 and grew up in Worcester, Maine. He worked at many different occupations before coming to Michigan in 1930 to work on the Hardy Dam near Newaygo for Consumers Power. He ended up, however, working for the same company in Grand Rapids. He married Bessie Bennett in 1931. They purchased a farm near Grand Ledge in 1938 and started raising registered Holsteins. Mr. Segerlind retired from dairy farming in 1963 and from the state of Michigan in 1966. They lived on the farm for 45 years before moving to grand Ledge. He was superintendent of Partlow Country School for several years and served on the Clinton County School Board. After the age of 90, he became known for cutting fireplace wood for family and friends using a carpenter’s saw. Mr. Segerlind was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 75 years and was very active in several local lodges. He was a member and past master of Mulliken Masonic Lodge #412, F & AM. He was a member of the Grand Ledge Chapter #85 of the Royal Arch Masons, the Mulliken Chapter #161 OES, the Shriners, and a 32nd degree Mason.
Thorgny was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Bessie; a sister, Anna; and a brother, Henry.
He is survived by a brother, Warren of Houston, Texas; four sisters, Helen Harvey of Lowell, Mass., Esther Hanson of Jupiter, Fla., Elsie Tipton of Springfield, Ore., and Virginia Sills of Kelseyville, Calif.; three sons, Ronald (Joan) Segerlind of Dallas, Texas, Larry (Donna) Segerlind of Okemos and Gerald (Joyce) Segerlind of Portland; nine grandchildren, Yasmina (Bud) Walker, Alexis Segerlind, T Johnson (Sarah) Segerlind, Karen (Robert) Baum, Brian (Mary Beth) Segerlind, Nathan (Li) Segerlind, Adam Segerlind, David Segerlind and Sarah Segerlind; five great grandchildren, Rachel and Hillary Walker, Matthew Segerlind, heather and Keith Baum; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held May 20 at Barker-Leik Funeral Home in Mulliken, with Rev. George Grettenberger, associate pastor of Okemos Community Church, officiating. Interment followed at Union Cemetery in Oneida Township. Pallbearers were Robert Baum, Adam Segerlind, Brian Segerlind, David Segerlind, Nathan Segerlind and T Johnson Segerlind.
John (Bill) Selleck
John W. (Bill) Selleck of Holt passed away March 26, 2004. Burial services will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich., at 1 p.m. on May 6.
Mr. Selleck was born July 28, 1924 in Otter Lake, Mich. He grew up during the depression era on the Selleck farm with brother, Russell, and sisters, Ruth and Marian, where strong family values were modestly established; a theme that was never forgotten as his opportunities broadened. Excelling in basketball and baseball were Otter Lake High School accomplishments before entering the Pre Law program at Michigan State College.
Mr. Selleck voluntarily entered the military in 1943, and graduated from pilot training at Ft. Sumner, N.M. He was assigned to the 462nd Bomb Group, 770th Bomb Squadron, and 58th Bomb Wing. His memories included flying missions from India over the Hump, bailing out over China after being hit over Omura, Japan on December 19, 1944, and time spent on the islands of Tinian and the Marianas. He flew 35 combat missions in B-29s and was decorated with Distinguished Flying Cross, an Air Medal with three Oak Clusters, and two Air Force Commendation Medals.
He returned to civilian life graduating with B.A. and M.A. degrees from Michigan State, teaching at the University of California-Berkley, and working for the State of Michigan’s Civil Service Department. He reentered the military in 1953 making a career flying with the Air Force. He served with the 70th Strategic Recon Wing, the 379th Bomb Wing, and SAC Headquarters. Major Selleck served as a B-47 and B-52 instructor pilot. He flew several B-52 missions during the Cuban missile crisis near Russian air space. In 1969, he retired from the Air Force to rejoin the Civil Service for that State of Michigan.
Mr. Selleck worked on a variety of capacities including small government administration. He served as personnel officer with the Michigan State Police for six years.
The legacy of making the best of troubling situations, looking toward higher goals, respecting nature, and seeking your own path in life were some of the greatest gifts passed on to his survivors. His devoted wife, Newanna of Holt, and children, Margo (Rod) Clickner of Dansville, William (Ann) Selleck of Charlotte, and the late Hugh Selleck and grandchildren.
Bill was actively involved with St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Mason for over 30 years. He volunteered as a driver for the Red Cross. The American Red Cross has received donations in his memory.
Della Serene
Della Serene, 43, of Vermontville, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at her residence.
Della was born July 22, 1960 in Charlotte, the daughter of Allan and Teresha (Morehouse) Serene. Della graduated from Michigan State University and had been a freelance writer for Web sites. She was a member of the Writer’s Build and thoroughly enjoyed being with children.
She is survived by her mother Teresha and stepfather Thomas VanAuken of Vermontville; her sister, Dena (Paul) Lahr of Charlotte; two nieces, Denise and Rebecca Lahr of Charlotte; grandmother, Idella Morehouse of Vermontville; step grandparents, Don and Aleta VanAuken of Vermontville; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father Allan in 1969, fraternal grandparents, maternal grandfather, two aunts and an uncle.
Funeral services were held May 14 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Jeff Swift officiating. Interment followed in Hillside Cemetery, Kalamo.
