William R. Servis
William Richard “Bill” Servis, 75, of Pennfield Township, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2004 at home after a long illness.
He was born Oct. 4, 1928, the son of Harley and Verna Mae (Finley) Servis in Cadillac. He graduated from Mesick High School in 2002 during a special graduation ceremony. Bill left school at age 17 to join the Navy. He served as a Seabee during World War II and the Korean War in Guam, Cuba and the Aleutian Islands. When he left the service he went to work for Kellogg’s and retired after 32 years. He was a member of the Kellogg’s 25 Year Club and enjoyed growing Rose of Sharon bushes and working in his yard. His other hobbies included woodworking and hunting.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marjorie Mae (Stevens) Servis. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 30, 2004. He is also survived by sons, Michael (Christine) Servis and Brian Servis, both of Savannah, Ga.; daughter, Judy Mae Lawton of Battle Creek; son-in-law, Robert Lawton; grandchildren, Jennifer Mae Lawton and Joshua William Servis; sisters, Maebell Strahl, Kathryn Krueger and Donna McKian, all of Sun City, Ariz., Dixie Gilbert of Glendale, Ariz., and Mildred Hinsley of Hillsdale; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sister, Marian Dean; and brothers, Clyde Servis and Johnny Servis.
Services were held July 1 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Don Francis officiating. Entombment was at Memorial Park Mausoleum in Battle Creek.
Memorial contributions may be made to Good Samaritan Hospice Care. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Howard E. Shaffer
Howard Elbert Shaffer, 79, of Charlotte, formerly of Haslett, died Thursday, April 8, 2004.
Mr. Shafffer was boron Sept. 13, 1924 in Syracuse, N.Y., the son of George Delmer and Georgia Viola (Coats) Shaffer. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was a member of the Royal Arch Mason #117, Royal & Select Masons Chapter 64 in Williamston. Mr. Shaffer was a foreman for Oldsmobile in the Experimental Engineering Department, retiring in 1992 after 42 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing cards.
He is survived by daughters, Michele Shaffer of Charlotte, Robin (Robert) Conn of Williamston, April Duffy of Haslett; sister, Mabel Wilborn of Lake; and former spouse, Joan Shaffer of Haslett.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 12 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment will be at East Lawn memory Gardens in Okemos. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
George W. Shaw
George W. “Old Man”, Shaw, 78, of Charlotte, passed away June 7, 2004 in Charlotte.
George was a retired employee of Grand Ledge Clay Products, a World War II veteran, serving in the U.s. Navy, and enjoyed gardening and fishing.
He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara J. (Wells); brothers, Robert and Ray Shaw; sisters, Joyce Ackley and Lula Pallas; and his good friend, Mary Litchfield.
Surviving are his children, Linda (Ernie) May, Leanne (Richard) May, Laura (Ed) May, Lyle Shaw, Leon (Karen) Shaw; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph Shaw Jr.
Services were held June 10 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge, with Rev. Terry LaDuke of Bright Hope Church in Potterville officiating. Military services followed at Oakwood Cemetery, Grand Ledge.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or the Grand Ledge VFW.
Ivan D. Sheets
Ivan D. Sheets, 57, of Olivet, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 27, 2004 at the Jackson Harness Raceway in Jackson.
Ivan was born Jan. 20, 1947 in Charlotte, the son of Howard and Violet (Weeks) Sheets and had been a lifelong Olivet resident. He was a longtime teacher and coach for Olivet Community Schools, with 33 years of service, receiving many awards for his accomplishments as both boys and girls basketball coach. He was a member of the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, a founding member of Olivet Sports Boosters, held memberships in the Harness Horseman Association, the United States Trotting Association, the Michigan Standard bred Breeder’s Association and the Michigan Pont Club, in which he was recently inducted into its hall of fame. Ivan founded Team Camps, Inc. at Olivet College and most recently co founded and operated Eagle Country Stables in Olivet, pursuing his second career as a horseman. He was a member of the Olivet Education Association, and the Michigan and National Education Associations.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Champion) Sheets, to whom he was married Dec. 27, 1969; one daughter, Heather Sheets of Olivet; one son, Jason Sheets of Lansing; brother, Alan Sheets of Charleston, Ark.; three sisters, Patricia Latham of Lansing, Marilee Metters of Lansing and Betsey (Dr. Thomas) Mulvaney of Burke, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held May 31 in the Olivet High School gymnasium, with Rev. Doug Hammond and Rev. Thomas Peters officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ivan D. Sheets Memorial Scholarship Fund through Olivet Community Schools. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Margarette Louise Sheff
Margarette Louise Sheff, age 73, of Eaton Rapids, formerly of Utica, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 in Lansing. Margarette was born on May 4th, 1931 in Shannon, GA, and was an Eaton Rapids, resident for the past 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Alvin, in 2000.
She is survived by son, Bernard, of Eaton Rapids; daughter, Denise (Dale) Toumari of Redford; and grandsons, Benjamin Patrick Sheff and James Douglas Sheff.
Marge was the consummate mother, a constant support to her children and grandchildren, including secretarial/accounting in recent years for Sheff and Sons Engineering, P.L.L.C., Eaton Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at the Columbia Road Baptist Church, Mason (corner of Eifert & Columbia), Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor John Hayden officiating. Interment will follow at the Fowler Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to Columbia Rd. Baptist Church in memory of Margarette Sheff.
Frances E. Shetenhelm
Frances E. Shetenhelm, age 93, of Vermontville, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.
Frances was born April 13, 1910 in Chester Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Lloyd and Edith (Smith) Case. She was reared in Chester Township and attended school there. She married Earl Shetenhelm on Jan. 7, 1933 in Angola, Ind. Frances and Earl lived all their married life in the Vermontville Area. Frances was a longtime member of the Vermontville First Congregation Church. She enjoyed cooking, was an avid reader, crossword puzzle enthusiast, enjoyed watching sports on TV and was a member of the local garden club and Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl on Oct. 18, 1975; three brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by daughter, Mary (Duane) Wolfe of Charlotte; granddaughters, Jackie Janousek of Charlotte and Judi (David) Lemon of Potterville, great granddaughter, Mardi Hill of Lansing; and several step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Jan. 19 at the Vermontville First Congregational Church, with Rev. Eric Lison officiating. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vermontville Fist Congregational Church or the National Kidney Foundation.
Arthur R. Shook
Arthur R. “Archie” Shook passed away Jan. 13, 2004 at Battle Creek Health System. He was 80 years old. He was born Feb. 20, 1923 in Calhoun County, the son of Arthur E. and Esther (Jaquay) Shook.
Mr. lived in the Olivet and Bellevue area for many years before moving to Union City in 1985. He married Joanne Thorp on April 1, 1988; she survives. Mr. Shook retired from Clark Equipment in Battle Creek. He raised and rode paint horses and was a member of the American Paint Horses Association.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Susan Shook of California and Sandy Wagerman of Georgia; three grandchildren and one great grandchild; one sister, Naida (Dale) Doty of Charlotte; and two sisters-in-law, Thelma Barnhart of Olivet and Anita Shook of Bellevue.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sadie Louise Shook in 1992; two brothers, Elmon Shook in December 1998 and Bert Barnhart in June 2002.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Putnam Funeral Home of Union City.
Ethel M. Shumaker
Ethel Mae Shumaker, 80, of Charlotte, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2004.
Mrs. Shumaker was born Dec. 26, 1923 in Senecaville, Ohio. She loved traveling and enjoyed dancing in earlier years.
She is survived by sons, Bernard (Ana Maria) Stambaugh, Jeff (Daneen) Shumaker, Doug (Katy) Shumaker all of Charlotte; daughter, Linda Lee (Gene) Russell of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard Russell Stambaugh, in 1947 and second husband, Orland Egbert Shumaker, in 1987.
Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Tim Olson officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
