Robert P. Simon
Robert p. Simon, 76, of Pewamo passed away at home Aug. 3. He was born in Pewamo May 5, 1928 the son of William and Julia (Smith) Simon. Robert married Helen V. Smith on June 6, 1953 in Portland and together they shared 51 years of marriage. Bob owned and operated Williams Farm Machinery in Charlotte and was also a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pewamo. He was a Veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army, and was a member of the Fowler-Pewamo-Westphalia VFW Post #3733. He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick G. Simon on May 3, 2000; grandchildren, Renee Ferris and Katie Miles; and infant brother, Reynold. Surviving are his wife, Helen V. Simon of Pewamo; children, Cathy (Mike) Miles of Portland, Diann (Pete) Pintacura of Grand Ledge, Rita (Rex) Ferris of Soap Lake, Wash., Bill (Jeanne) Simon of Grand Ledge, Amy (Mike) Droste of Westphalia, Donna (Al) Droste of Pewamo, and Bob Simon of Pewamo; daughter-in-law, Judy Simon of Pewamo; 22 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; siblings, Hilda (Fran) Killen, Stan Simon, Gerald “Jake” (Jo Ann) Simon, Isabel (Charlie) Hewitt, Mary Ellen (Terry) Burns, Joan (Jay) Schafer and Donna (Ken) Fedewa. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor Aug. 6 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Pewamo. Rite of Committal followed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo with Military Honors provided by the Fowler-Pewamo-Westphalia VFW Post #3733. Arrangements were handled by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland. Contributions may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church or to the American Diabetes Association.
Ronald Edgar Slocum
Ronald E. “Ron” Slocum died at sunrise on July 18, 2004 at the age of 65, following a prolonged illness. He was born on February 22, 1939 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Clyde Jr. and Elizabeth “Beth” Slocum (both deceased), and graduated from the Eaton Rapids High School in 1957. After graduating from Western Michigan University in 1964, he enrolled at Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. In June of 1965 he took a position as an assistant pastor at a small storefront church in the Westside Christian Parish of Chicago until a knee injury forced him to leave in March of 1966. He moved back to Michigan, and that May he joined the Department of Social Services until his retirement in 1998. In 1976 he and his family moved to his hometown of Eaton Rapids, and he loved singing with The Third Person, a gospel music group of fellow church members. Ron enjoyed music, reading, fishing, in his younger days, and playing cards, especially bridge, competing in tournaments and winning one in 1992.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary; 2 daughters, Rachel of Mason and Rebecca of Eaton Rapids; sister, Judy (Leon) Gemalsky of Eaton Rapids and niece, Lorraine (James) Larder.
A memorial celebration of Ron’s life will be on Thursday, July 22, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids, or a charity of one’s choice, in memory of Ronald E. Slocum, envelopes available at the funeral home.
Francis J. Smalley
Francis J. “Smokey” Smalley, 79, of Potterville, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 at his residence.
Smokey was born Aug. 2, 1925 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Kenneth and Merna (Greene) Smalley, and had been a Potterville resident for 77 years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was a service manager for Fowler’s Chevrolet/Olds in Charlotte, retiring in 1986 after 26 years of service. In 1990, with his son, Doug, started Smoke-N-Dougs Auto Repair in Potterville. He was active as a Boy Scout master in the 1950s, had been a member of the Potterville Lions Club, served on the Potterville Board of Review and was an avid supporter of Potterville Vikings athletics.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Shirley (Butler) Smalley; sons, James F. (Kate) Smalley of Candello, Australia, and Douglas D. (Pamela) Smalley of Potterville; daughter, Linda L. Amey of Potterville; eight grandchildren, Scott A. (Yasuko) Smalley, Heather (David) Skogerson, Thomas A. Smalley, Kenneth (Cinnamon) Prudden, Melissa Crawford, Joshua J. Smalley, Christian V. (Danielle) Amey and Matthew J. (Lisa Tossey) Amey; 12 great grandchildren; brother, John (Betty) Smalley of Potterville; and a sister, Jo Ann Teichman of Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth Smalley; and a sister, Bernadine Raines.
Funeral services were held Jan. 4, 2005 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rebecca Morrison officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Potterville United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice.
Eileen Anne Smith
Eileen Anne Smith, 45, of Houston, Texas, died June 6, 2004. Eileen was born on July 10, 1958, in Eaton Rapids, MI and graduated as President of the Class of 1976. She was the daughter of Paul M. Smith, Eaton Rapids, and the late Kathryn (Southwell) O’Neal of Houston, Texas. After graduating form Michigan State University in 1980, she went to work for subsidiaries of FMC Technologies, Inc. as a purchasing manager in the oil industry. She excelled in her field and in 1987 was named Purchasing Manager of the Year by the Society of Purchasing Managers. She traveled internationally in her work and made friends wherever she went.
Eileen is survived by her husband, Ahmed Al-Essa; three sisters, Susan (Douglas) Lilly of DeWitt, Julie (Scott) Stewart and Amy (Mark) Matthias of Houston; and a stepbrother Todd Smith, of Eaton Rapids; and special aunt, Martha Smith of Mt. Pleasant. She was a wonderful daughter, sister and aunt with eight nieces and nephews, who she loved dearly and who will miss her. Her Scotty dog Max, also survives, as do countless friends in Michigan and Texas.
Services were held June 11 in Houston. Educational trust funds have been established to benefit Eileen’s nieces and nephews, a memorial tree fund has been established at MSU (contract University Development) or person’s whishing may make a donation to the charity of choice in memory of Eileen.
Gladys Rose Smith
Gladys R. Smith, age 85, of Eaton Rapids died Friday, June 18, 2004 at a Lansing nursing home. Gladys was born September 22, 1918 in Lansing, one of nine children born to Edward R. Retzloff and Rose (Hoyt) Retzloff Meyers. Mrs. Smith enjoyed playing bingo and making crafts. Preceding her in death are her husband, Bernard W. Smith on May 2, 1994; grandchildren, Brent and JoDee Arras and her 8 brothers and sisters.
Surviving are 7 children, Virginia (Fred) Tamblyn of Lansing, Sharline Stiles of Jackson, George (Pat) Smith of Jackson, Ronald (Joan) Smith of Florence, AL, Bonnie (Dean) Preston of Potterville, Vicki (Thomas) Ackley of Eaton Rapids and Pamela (Theodore) Reed of Eaton Rapids; 15 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 23 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with burial following in the Jones Cemetery in rural Jackson County. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Jessica J. Smith
Jessica June (Day) Smith, 81, of Kalkaska, formerly of Charlotte, passed away June 26, 2004.
Jessica was born Feb. 21, 1923 on a farm between Bellevue and Charlotte, the daughter of Anna and Arthur Day. She was the youngest of four sisters, Georgia, Louis, and Margaret.
She and her husband Don raised a son and daughter in Charlotte before retiring to Baldwin, Mich. In 1974. Besides being a homemaker, she worked in the Sears-Roebuck catalog office and later drove a school bus for special education students.
She is survived by a son Rockne Smith in Gibraltar, Mich., daughter Sheila Airola in Kalkaska, Mich., five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Don P. Smith.
A memorial service was held at Burcham Hills Retirement Center in East Lansing, June 29.
Ruby A. Smith
Ruby A. Smith, 77, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs.
Ms. Smith was born Feb. 24, 1927 in Charlotte, the daughter of Fred Eugene and Beatrice A. (Tripp) Raines. She was a housekeeper for Holiday Inn.
She was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Miranda Dickinson; sisters, Fern Hastings of Lansing and Maxine Olsen of Eaton Rapids, and brother. Harley Raines of Charlotte.
She is survived by children, Annetta (Skip) Penix of Nashville, Kathy (Duane) Thompson of Charlotte, Kay (Doug) Babcock of Indian River; son, Joseph (Margie) Smith of Gaylord; sisters, Thelma Simons of Charlotte, Valerie Lass of Lansing; brother, John Raines of Charlotte; 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Sept. 29 at Gresham Cemetery, Charlotte, with R. Raymond Rossell officiating. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Ruth I. Smith
Ruth I. Smith, age 83, of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, March 7, 2004. Ruth was born September 6, 1029 in Jackson County, the daughter of Ora and Nine (Adams) Furgason. Mrs. Smith was the former Secretary of Hoag & Sons Book Bindery in Springport and later worked for the Eaton Rapids Medical Clinic as a Billing Clerk. She was a member of the Griffith United Methodist Church and had frequented the Onondaga Senior Citizens luncheons and enjoyed bingo and cards and traveling. Preceding her in death are her husbands, Ivan Austin in 1960 and Forrest Smith in 1976.
Surviving are her 2 daughters, Janice (Charlie) Bibler of Jackson, and Connie (James Peter) Plotts of Columbia, Missouri; 5 grandchildren, Douglas Peters, Cash Peters, Melissa Fowler, Amy Jenkins and Jason Clinkingbeard; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Doris (Dewaine) Beinz of Onondaga; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Thursday, March 11, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with burial following in the Springport Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the funeral home of Wednesday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be to the Griffith United Methodist Church Building Fund in memory of Ruth I. Smith.
Vicki M. Smith
Vicki Marie Smith, 57, of Charlotte, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004.
Mrs. Smith was born July 25, 1947 in Lansing, the daughter of Fen and Elizabeth (McDonald) McCrimmon. She was a member of Chester Gospel Church, liked traveling and camping, and loved kids.
She is survived by her husband, Phil Smith; brother, Michael (Susan) McCrimmon of Muskegon; sisters, Mary (Bob) Hamilton of Marion, Faye Charlene (Paul) Zionskowski of Kingsley, Frances (Tony) Maddox of Marion, Teresa (Ron) VanAssche of Evart, and Judy (John) Hatfield of Marion; several aunts and uncles, many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held Aug. 30, 2004 at Chester Gospel Church in Charlotte, with Pastors Marc Livingston and Barry Smith officiating. Burial was at Millerburg Cemetery, Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to Chester Gospel Church, Sparrow Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
