Dewain J. Vallie Sr.
Dewain Joseph Vallie Sr., 69, of Olivet, died Aug. 20, 2004 at home.
Dewain was born April 13, 1935 to Willard and Virginia (Pilon) Vallie in Ecorse. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in River Rouge and attended Henry Ford Community College. He worked as an electrical supervisor for Great Lakes Steel, a division of National Steel in Ecorse. He retired in 1984 and operated Sherwood Forest in Olivet from 1984 to 1996. Dewain was the Sacristan at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bellevue, a former member of the Knights of Columbus in River Rouge and a current member of St. Mary’s Council in Charlotte, and was active in Walton Township government. He also enjoyed woodworking and working with his hands.
Dewain married Eleanor Jobin on May 15, 1954; she survives. Also surviving is son, Dewain Vallie Jr. of Olivet; daughter, Mary Jo Warner of Green Forest, Ark.; two grandson, Joshua and Jared Warner, and “Papa” to Tori Griffin of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; brothers, Edward (Linda) Vallie of St. Peters, Mo., Thomas (Suzanne) Vallie of Manchester, Robert (Ruth) Vallie of River Rouge, and Elmer Vallie of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 24 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. William Koenigsknect officiating. Interment was at Franklin Cemetery, Franklin.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Borgess Spiritual Care or Borgess/Bronson Hospitality House. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Donald R. VanAlstine
Donald Roy VanAlstine, age 86, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004 at Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte.
Mr. VanAlstine was born Dec. 1, 1917 in Grand Ledge, the son of Carl E. and Bernice (Thompson) VanAlstine. He was employed by Motor Wheel as a millwright until his retirement. He was a member of Moose Ledge, Eagles and Loners on Wheels.
He is survived by his four daughters, Jeannette Bruce, Elizabeth Gullett, Olive Kennedy and Mary (Rocky) Marsh; seven sons, Keith (Julie) VanAlstine, Leonard (Vicky) VanAlstine, Ernest (Vicky) VanAlstine, Stewart (Karen) VanAlstine, John (Jodi) VanAlstine and Phillip VanAlstine; brothers, Albert VanAlstine, Bill VanAlstine and Ken VanAlstine; sister, Wanda (Louis) Marcellus; 26 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis VanAlstine in 1977 and son Jerrold VanAlstine in 1958. Funeral services were held Oct. 8 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Fred Geobert officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery, Potterville.
Gay Vance
Gay Vance, 72, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004.
Mrs. Vance was born June 14, 1931 in Lorrie, W.Va., the daughter of Carlin and Sudah (Gillenwaters) Kessinger. Mrs. Vance was a member of the Eagles of McArthur, Ohio.
She is survived by son, William (Sue) Vance of Bellevue; daughters, Terri (Joe) Jenson of Charlotte, Brenda (Chuck) Tomlinson of Charlotte, Rita Poyer of Bellevue, Chris (Steve) Morris of Charlotte, Sue Vance (Pat Pung) of Dimondale; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; sisters, Carnella Adkins, June Morgan, Mary Atzec, Geraldine Thomason, Wanda Taylor and Jean Herner.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Clarence Vance in 2001; brothers, Joe Kessinger, Michael Kessinger; sister, Goldie Smith; and son-in-law, Brian Poyer.
Funeral services were held Jan.2 1 at Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte; with Rev. Karen Wheat, Jim Vance and Dennis Vance officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Margaret F. VanGelder
Margaret Fern VanGelder, 81, of Charlotte, died Sunday, July 11, 2004.
Ms. VanGelder was born Nov. 30, 1922 in Walton Township, the daughter of Enos and Fern Estelle (Burlingame) Cooper. She worked for many years as a baby-sitter and an Avon dealer. She loved her backyard birds, collecting elephants and was a huge Elvis fan.
She is survived by daughter, Yvonne French of Charlotte; sons, Jake (Dawn) VanGelder of Charlotte and Greg VanGelder of Vermontville; and eight grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Edwin W. VanSickle
Edwin William VanSickle, 94, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004.
Mr. VanSickle was born Nov. 234, 1909 in Lansing, the son of Edwin and Maude (Bell) VanSickle. Ed was involved in various enterprises over the years, including a grocery in Potterville and theaters in Ovid and Manchester. Ed was known to most people as a real estate agent with a generous heart.
The city of Charlotte was the benefactor of Mr. VanSickle’s generosity. Among his many gifts to the community were the Charlotte Fire Department thermal imager unit, blacktop of Maple Hill Cemetery, and the senior center building, which has been a great addition to the city, thanks to Ed’s vision and assistance. He also enjoyed woodcarving and painting.
He is survived by a brother, Walter (Gloria) VanSickle of Kalamazoo; companion, Bettie Morrissey of Charlotte; nieces, Peggy VanSickle of White Bear Lake, Minn., Vicki (William) Bilyk of Kalamazoo, Margaret (David) Wade of Detroit, Nancy (Rich) Pawlicki of Florida; nephews, Richard (Lynda) Geahan of Phoenix, Ariz., Ronald (Judy) VanSickle of Maryland., Edgar (June) Fremody of Charlotte and Herbert (Ellen) Allen of Traverse City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Veda M. VanSickle, in 1994; niece Teri Lynn VanSickle; nephew Fred VanSickle; brothers Fred VanSickle, Rulison “Doc” VanSickle, Oliver Jerome VanSickle and Robert Preston VanSickle; and a sister, Ethel.
Funeral services were held Oct. 12 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. David Hustwick officiating. Interment was at Male Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Area Senior Center in Charlotte.
Nellie G. VanSickle
Nellie G. (Turner) VanSickle, 88, of Bellevue, died peacefully, Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at her daughter’s home.
She was born Nov. 26, 1915 to Guy and Helena (Hamilton) Turner in Bellevue. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1933. In 1934, Superintendent Wayne Berry asked her to come work as his secretary. She served in this capacity until 1939. Nellie married Vaughn VanSickle on Dec. 10, 1938 in her parents’ home. They operated the Turner and VanSickle farms. In the mid 1950s, Nellie worked at the Bellevue Gazette as a line-o-type operator. She served on the Bellevue School Board for seven years, and returned to work as secretary to the superintendent of Bellevue Schools for 23 years. She and her husband, Vaughn, lived on the family farm until his health failed and they moved into their daughter Mollie’s home. After his death in 2001, she was unable to live alone. Nellie then moved in with her son Jim and his wife, Joan, for about two years, living again at her childhood home. When her health became poor, she returned to live at her daughter’s home.
Surviving are children, James (Joan) VanSickle, Marvin (Elizabeth) VanSickle, Nyle (Linda) VanSickle and Millie (Doug) Stevens, all of Bellevue; brother, Rex (Olga) Turner of Lansing; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren; two nieces, three nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by a great great granddaughter, sister-in-law Leah Turner, and nephew Stephen Turner.
Nellie worked on school committees for her children and attended her grandchildren’s school events. She was a member of the Bellevue United Methodist Church and Women’s Circle. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge since 1934, participated in the Eaton County Farm Bureau Women’s Group and the Welcome Farmers’ Community Action Group. Nellie and Vaughn took modern square dance lessons and loved camping and fishing at Lacey Lake. For 23 years they visited their daughter and son-in-law’s cabin in the Upper Peninsula. She also enjoyed traveling to Colorado to visit her grandson, Jack, and his family. Nellie took pleasure in going to and listening to Old Time Music, attending senior citizen luncheons in Bellevue and Olivet, as well as Retired School Teachers’ luncheons. She most enjoyed spending time with her family and close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Rodeman, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Near, and all her friends at the Old Time Music locations.
Services were held Feb. 10 at Bellevue United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.
Memorial contributions may go to Eaton Community Hospice, Bellevue United Methodist Church, or the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Ronald C. Van Vleet
Ronald Charles Van Vleet, 58, of Bellevue, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004.
Mr. Van Vleet was born June 17, 1946 in Battle Creek, the son of Robert and Eva (Rice) Van Vleet. He was employed at Airway Manufacturing and had been a Salvation Army volunteer.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sharon (Betz) Van Vleet; brothers, Robert (Donna) of Coldwater, David (Violet) of Battle Creek, and Gerald (Shirley) of Charlotte; sister, Ruby Van Vleet of Coldwater; nephews, John Van Vleet of Vermontville and Jeremy Van Vleet of Wisconsin; nieces, Kathy Caudill of Potterville, Diana Lake of Charlotte, Becky Reed of Eaton Rapids, and Marjory of Quincy.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1984 and his mother in 1994.
Funeral services were held Dec. 15 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Nina M. Vinkle
Nina Mae Vinkle, 91, of Ashley, formerly of Perry and Charlotte, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at Ashley Care Center.
Mrs. Vinkle was born July 15, 1913 in Harbor Springs, the daughter of Roy and Florence Vinkle. While living in Charlotte, she attended the Charlotte Assembly of God.
Surviving are daughters, Betty Ruth Perkins of East Lansing and Pat Woods of Cottonwood, Calif.; three sons, Marc Scott of Olivet, Sam Slusher of Pellston and Richard Kellogg of Muskegon; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Aug. 13 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. James Knell officiating. Interment was at DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt.
