Roberta Whitbeck
Roberta E. Whitbeck, 88, of Battle Creek, died Thursday Dec. 16, 2004 at Battle Creek Health System. She was born Nov. 26, 1916 to Lear F. and Edith M. (Sheldon) Mains.
Roberta graduated from Olivet High School and Olivet College. She was employed in the sales department at Kraft/General Foods/Post Cereal Division of 35 years, retiring in 1981.
Surviving are cousins, Jack (Velma) Sheldon, Philip Mains, Ruth Niver, Robert Surdez, David Surdez, Lois Ellison, Katherine Nikolaou, John Nikolaou; their families, numerous other relatives, close friends and her caregiver, Carol Antes.
Roberta was a member of the First Congregational Church, its Women’s Fellowship Group, and the Post 25 Year Club.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, in the library at the First Congregational Church with services following in the Miller Chapel.
Her cremains will be interred next to her parents, at Bosworth Cemetery in Eaton County.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church Library Fund, 145 Capital Ave. NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017. Arrangements were by Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home.
Anne H. White
Anne H. White, 88, of Olivet, died Sunday, May 9, 2004 at her residence.
Mrs. White was born May 4, 1916 in L’Anse, the daughter of Ferdinand and Margaret Stiglich, and had been an Olivet resident since 1978, coming from Gary, Ind. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught at Holy Angels School in Gary, Ind., and then in the Gary Public School System. Mrs. White was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshall and the Eaton County Bulb and Blossom Garden Club.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Lawrence E. White; two sons, Claude White of Indianapolis, Ind., and Charles (Margery) White of Farmington Hills; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Ridley of Sun City West, Ariz.; and two brothers, Martin (Ruth) Stiglich of Plymouth and Frank (Lucy) Stiglich of Farmington Hills. She was preceded in death by brothers, George, Fritz and Anton Stiglich.
Mass of the Christian Burial was held May 12 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marshall, with Fr. Stephen Naas officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet College. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Clarence H. White
Clarence H. White, of Hastings, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 82, died Thursday, November 11, 2004 in Hastings. Clarence was born October 4, 1922 in Colbran, CO, the son of Bert E. and Laura L. (Tryon) White. He retired from Kemco Inc. and was a member of Robbins United Methodist Church and the Eaton Rapids Lion’s Club.
Surviving him are his wife of 56 years, Aletha; 2 daughters, Suzanne Marie (Brian) Pufpaff of Hastings and Cynthia Joyce (Bryan) Wade of Holt; 4 grandchildren, Nathan (Amy) Pufpaff, Kristin Pufpaff, Timothy Wade, Alison (Aaron) Todd and 1 niece, Linda Massaro of Phoenix, AZ.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 1:00-3:00 & 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids. If desiring memorial contributions may be made to Robbins United Methodist Church or Eaton Rapids Lion’s Club in memory of Clarence.
Melvin R. White
Melvin Richard White, 72, of Vermontville, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004.
Mr. White was born Nov. 14, 1931 in Mt. Morris, the son of Gordon William and Iva (Teets) White. He was a heavy equipment operator, and a great horseman who enjoyed horse and pony pulling competitions and was a member of the Mid Michigan Horse Pulling Association. He also loved deer hunting and rabbit hunting with his hunting dogs.
He is survived by sons, Brad Richard White and Blane (Sharon) White, both of Vermontville; daughters, Judy (David) Lemon of Potterville and Jackie Janousek of Charlotte; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brother, Eugene (Phyllis) White of DeWitt; sister, Beulah MacSoud of Sterling Heights; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by granddaughter Erica White in 1998.
Funeral services were held March 1 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Nancy S. White
Nancy S. White of Charlotte died peacefully in her sleep Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte.
Nancy was born in South Bent, Ind., on Nov. 11, 1928, to Dr. Charles Justice Steiner and Ernestine (Fox) Steiner, who both preceded her in death. Nancy attended Grand Rapids Junior College, where she met and later married William “Bill” White on Aug. 20, 1949. In addition to being a wife, mother, grandma and friend, she was also a dental assistant, retail manager, school, community and hospital volunteer, managed the operations of the Masonic Temple and was Santa’s wife. She was a long-time member of First Congregational Church in Charlotte, where she was actively involved in Christian education and served on many committees in the church, including wedding organizer, the bazaar, funeral dinners and the Blanch Moyer Circle. She was a member of Eastern Star, loved to play cards, go to Sharon’s Café, tell jokes and spend time with her family.
Surviving are her husband, Bill; children, James (Bobbie) White of Lowell, Elizabeth (Rod) Fuller of St. Johns and Susan Klassen of Duck Lake; grandchildren, Jason (MaryAnne) White of Troy, Ryan (Heidi) White of Pasadena, Calif., Lisa and Alex Fuller of St. Johns, Paige, Janna and Drew Klassen of Duck Lake; great grandchildren, Abby and Emma White of Troy; sister, Kay (Rex) Bignall of Arizona; brother, Charles (Marie-Dominique) Steiner of Bilhac, Fla.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ford and Marge Byars of Florida and many special friends.
Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at First Congregational Church UCC in Charlotte, with Rev. Philip Hobson officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or First Congregational Church in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Richard Q. Whitehair
Richard Quenton Whitehair, age 85, of Nashville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004 at Veterans Medical Center in Battle Creek.
Mr. Whitehair was born April 30, 1918 in Monogah, W.Va., the son of Winfield and Henrietta Whitehair. He was married to Grace (Staup) Heney on Aug. 30, 1956 in Watson, W.Va. The couple was married for 43 years when Grace passed away. Mr. Whitehair served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1939 to 1945 as a rifle marksman. His service began with a station in Iceland from July 1941 through March 1942. He participated in action against the Japanese at Bougainville, British Solomon Islands, from Nov. 17 through Dec. 15, 1943. He also served in the Pacific area from February 1943 until August 1944. He was employed at Standard Stamping in Nashville for over 20 years when he retired in 1983. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #8260 in Nashville. He enjoyed bowling fishing, hunting, bird watching, playing cards and other games, including Yahtzee and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed playing pool.
He is survived by his sister, Etta; stepsons, Tom Heney and James (Sue) Heney; stepdaughter, Mary Alice Montgomery; nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 43 years, Grace; seven brothers; and two sisters, Opal and Mary.
Funeral services were held Jan. 16 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville, with Pastor Lester DeGroot officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek.
Bonita L.M. Whitfield
Bonita Lynn Marie “Bonnie” Whitfield, 48, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, the result of an accident.
Bonnie was born March 12, 1956 in St. Ignace, the daughter of Henry and Georgenia (Burton) Wartella. She was a nursing assistant at the Dimondale Center, which she enjoyed very much. She was proud of her beloved daughter who is currently serving in the United States Air Force in Iraq, grandkids and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Abby (Rod) Curry of Delaware; grandchildren, Anthony and Caleb; sisters, Shelby Wartella of Charlotte, Diane (Al) Young of Virginia and Patrice (Jerry) Hernley of Sunfield; brothers, Roger (Melissa) Wartella of Gladstone and Dennis (Sherry) Wartella of Portland.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Bob LaRose, Sheldon Wartella and Douglas Wartella.
A funeral mass was recited Dec. 27 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis R. Spitzley officiating. Interment was at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Moran at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Margaret Pearl Wilbur
Margaret P. Wilbur, age 84, of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, March 2, 2004 in Eaton Rapids. She was born June 26, 1919 in Perry, MI, the daughter of Clifford and Pearl (Cole) Wilbur. Mrs. Wilbur had retired from Heifetz Pickling Co. in Eaton Rapids with 25 years of service, retiring in 1981. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland, in 1981.
Surviving are 3 children, Gwen Oberlin of Texas, Rodney (Kay) Wilbur of Eaton Rapids and Michael (Janice) Wilbur of Connecticut; 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; brother, Wendell Wilbur of Charlotte and niece, Terry Richardson of Charlotte.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 7 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery, also in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Margaret P. Wilbur.
