Julie S. Bahmer
Julie Sophia Bahmer, age 101, of Olivet, died at her residence Nov. 12, 2003.
Julia was born Jan. 19, 1902 in Springport, the daughter of Charles and Hattie (Nicholas) Sebastian. She married Clyde Mark Bahmer Sr. March 30, 1921; he preceded her in death Oct. 12, 1969. She was a life-long resident of the area. She enjoyed farming, gardening, cooking and visiting with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, May A. Brown of Lansing; son, Howard Bahmer of Olivet; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy (Ralph) Locke of Springport, Lucille Stierley of Lansing and Hilda “Sally” Cooper of Albion; and a brother, William “Bud” Sebastian Jr. of Springport. She was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Bahmer Jr.; two grandsons, Richard and Jeffrey Bahmer; and five brothers and three sisters.
Graveside services were held Nov. 14 at Lee Center Cemetery in Lee Center, with Rev. Mark Booth officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Jackson – Oaklawn. Arrangements were by Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapels – Albion Chapel.
Mary M. Bair
Mary Maxine Bair, 84, of Potterville, died May 16, 2003.
Mrs. Bair was born Dec. 19, 1918 in Crawfordsville, Ind., the daughter of Charles and Nora Mae (Thomas) Johnson. Mary was a housekeeper for the Holiday Inn, Lafayette, Ind. and a cook for the Tippecanoe School District. She was a member of the Homemakers Club in Wea, Ind.
She is survived by daughter, Judy (Leo) Zottneck of Dimondale; three grandchildren, Robin (Steve) Lett, Rod (Rebecca) Zottneck, Rana Morey (Mike Milbourne); four great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jordan Lett, Chelsea and Shelby Morey.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1978.
Funeral services were held May 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Rebecca Morrison officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville, Ind.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Edwin Lee Baker
Edwin Lee Baker, age 45 of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, February 14, 2003 in Dimondale. Edwin was born July 29, 1957 in Anchorage, AK. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1975 and attended the University of Michigan. He was a manager with Barnes & Noble in Washington D.C. and Okemos for 20 years. Edwin was preceded in death by his father, Robert Baker.
Surviving are his mother, Yoshie (Robert) Sattler of Eaton Rapids; 2 brothers, Dale Baker of CA, Elbert (Darcie) Payne of Holt; 3 sisters, Monette Martin of Eaton Rapids, Patricia Payne of GA, Gail (Paris) Carpenter of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Those desiring may make contributions to the family in his memory. There will be no services. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Leo J. Baker
Leo James Baker, 89, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003.
Mr. Baker was born June 21, 1913 in Chester Township, the son of David and Grace (Rogers) Baker. He married Margaret Powers Oct. 21, 1933, and they were married for 68 years before her death March 24, 2002. During his early years Mr. Baker was always ready to help out his neighbors with his excellent mechanical skills. He was a machinist at Reo Motors during World War II and then went into partnership with his brother Vance to form Baker Brothers Construction. He retired from his own contracting company, Leo J. Baker – Son Builder, and enjoyed his grandchildren. He was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church.
He is survived by sons, L. Daryl (Mary Jean) of Charlotte and Doyle (Jackie) of Traverse City; daughters, Marcelyn (Sherman) Kelley and Darlene (Robert) Raymer, both of Charlotte, and Rosemary Kathleen (David) DeWaters of Texas; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister Marian Kline and brother Vance (Neva) Baker, both of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Merton Baker and Pearl Baker; and sister, Marguerite Satterly.
Funeral services were held Jan. 22 at Lawrence Avenue Methodist Church, with Rev. Verne Summers and Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Neva B. (Lamie) Baker
Neva B. (Lamie) Baker, 84, of Charlotte, died Thursday, June 12 at the Hayes Green Beach Hospital, Charlotte. Mrs. Baker was born in Chester Township, Eaton County, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Morgan) Lamie and was a lifelong Charlotte area resident. She was a 1935 Graduate of Charlotte High School, was a member of the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church and its Deborah Circle, was a member and past President of the G.F.W.C. Charlotte and had served as a Red Cross Volunteer at H.G.B. Hospital. She was co-owner with her husband, Vance Baker in the Baker Construction Co. for 40 years serving as bookkeeper and occasionally helping him on the job along with their son Roland. Prior to that had been employed at Wilcox-Gay Co. in Charlotte and Standard Block and Supply co. in Lansing.
Surviving are her husband, R. Vance Baker to whom she had been married for over 67 years; Son, Ronald (Jean Ann) Baker of Lansing; Granddaughter, Carol (Jack) Wright of Bloomfield Hills; Grandson, Douglas Vance (Karen) Baker of Caledonia; Great-grandchildren, Erik, Charlotte and Keith Wright and Sierra Marie and Bradley Vance Baker; step great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob Reinsmith, Christine and Benjamin Clare and Emily Smith.
Neva was preceded in death by brothers, Carroll Lamie and George Lamie and sister, Neta Collins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 16, at the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church, Charlotte with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment will be in the Gresham Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may go to the Lawrence Ave. United Methodist Church or Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Sidney D. Baker
Sidney D. Baker, age 73, of Charlotte, formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003.
Mr. Baker was born March 21, 1930 in Stratford, Iowa, the son of Howard and Myrtle (Updyke) Baker and had been a Charlotte resident for nine years, coming from Eaton Rapids. He was an active member of the Charlotte Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses; his association with Jehovah’s Witnesses started in 1941. Mr. Baker was a retired chef, having worked at various restaurants in the Lansing area. He was an avid lover of flowers and gardening, as well as cooking for friends and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juliana (James) Baker; daughter, Dette (Gilbert) Kronenberg of Thedford, Ontario; son, Timothy (Judy) Baker of Mason; five grandchildren, Joseph Baker, Craig Baker, Emily Baker, Peter and Kurt Kronenberg; and two sisters, Marilyn Lawrence of Jonesville and Bonnie (David) Sousa of San Marcos, Calif.
Graveside services were held Sept. 29 at Brickyard Cemetery in Eaton Rapids Township, with Elliot Eberhard officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House or the World Wide Work of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Lell Banks
Lell V. “Vicky” Banks, 79, of Nashville, formerly of Battle Creek, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility.
Mrs. Banks was born Dec. 30, 1923 in Alexandria, Va., the daughter of Harry and Lell (Hicks) Ginther. She was a member and past president of the Nashville VFW Ladies Auxiliary for over 50 years, a member of the Battle Creek Eagles, and enjoyed bowling and billiards. Her hobbies included fishing for blue gills, playing bingo, dancing and doing crafts.
She is survived by daughters, Jayne Scott of Jacksonville, Fla., Elizabeth (Jack) Hughes of Ocochobi, Fla., Joyce (Denis) Sergent of Lansing and Kathleen (Gary) Morales of Charlotte; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Sr. on Aug. 28, 1984; daughter, Elsie Yahn on Oct. 13, 1996; son, Robert “Bobby” on Nov. 15, 1955; and her parents, Harry and Lell (Hicks) Ginther.
Services were held Jan. 9 at Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville. Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, or the American Cancer Society.
Donald H. Barker
Donald Herbert Barker, 87, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 9, 2003.
Mr. Barker was born Dec. 30, 1915 in Mulliken, the son of Herbert and Gretta Barker. He was a foreman for Oldsmobile for 30 years, retiring in 1972. He also delivered papers for the Charlotte Shopping Guide for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dorothy (Taylor) Barker; daughters, Barb Kelly and Donna Palmer, both of Lansing; step-children Renee (Rick) Smith of Marshall, John (Nancy) Holton and Ray Holton, both of Olivet, Sue Lundy of Lansing, and Kathy Holton of Texas; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and nine step-grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Robert K. Barkley
Robert Kenneth Barkley, 83, of Bellevue, died July 28, 2003 at home.
He was born March 22, 1920 to Kirk and Mabel Barkley in Climax. He served in the Army Air Corps with the 85th Depot Repair Squadron as a sergeant during World War II. He worked for over 30 years at Clark Equipment as a machinist and supervisor. Robert married Mildred Hinds on Oct. 26, 1946; she survives. He was a member of Saladin Temple and several Shrine clubs and enjoyed hunting and county road trips.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter Deborah Morgan of Dowling; stepdaughter, Marilyn (Doran) Quigg of Julian, Pa.; grandchildren, Robert (Martha) Morgan of Battle Creek and Cynthia (K.C.) Barlond of Battle Creek, Dawn (Doug) Taggart of Arvella, Ind., Melanie (Bob) Hall of Julian, Pa. and Karen (Ed) Todd of Selinsgroves, Pa.; several great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Lucas of Climax; and brother, Ed Barkley of Richland.
He was preceded in death by brother, Kirk Barkley, and sister, Marion Gray.
Funeral services were held Aug. 1 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Leon Rayburn officiating. Interment was at Hicks Cemetery in Pennfield.
