D. F. Barnard
A memorial service for D. F. Barnard, son of Harry and Irene Barnard, will be held at Five Corners Family Worship Center in Charlotte on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Martin Saunders will be officiating.
Darwin J. E. Barnard
Darwin J. E. Barnard, 72, of Lasing, formerly of Charlotte, died Monday, March 31, 2003 in Lansing.
Mr. Barnard was born in Fowlerville, Feb. 19, 1931, the son of Harry and Irene (Blair) Barnard. Darwin served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of the Marine Corps League. He had been employed by Wohlert Corporation, retiring in 1993.
He is survived by daughter, Darlene Austin of Lansing; sons, Darwin Jay Barnard and Edward Darwin Barnard of Lansing; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alden and Marshall of Charlotte, and Dean of California; two sisters, Marie Wilson-Saunders of Charlotte and Norlene Esterline of Cambia; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Viola on March 5, 2002; brother, Harry Jr.; sisters, Barbara Mann and Dorene Barnard.
Funeral services were held April 4 at Five Corners Church, Charlotte, with Pastor Marten Saunders and Rev. Curtis Napier officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Charlotte L. Barrette
Charlotte Lee Barrette, age 51, of Charlotte, died Sept. 13, 2003.
Mrs. Barrette was born April 29, 1952 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Jack and Rosemary Wallace. She was a teacher’s aid at Eaton Intermediate School District and formerly worked at House of Ruth. Mrs. Barrette was involved in many aspects of special education in the Eaton area and was a Special Olympics volunteer.
She is survived by her husband, Michael; sons, Kenneth “Ken”, Daniel “Dan” (fiancée Stephanie), both of Fenton, Joseph “Joe” (fiancé Faith) of Charlotte; daughter, Tammera “Tammy” of Fenton; Battle Creek; sisters, Marjorie Goins and Cindy Gilson and brother, Bryan Wallace, all of Tennessee.
She was preceded in death by her father Jack Wallace in 1994.
Funeral services were held Sept. 17 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Reverend Glenn Litchfield officiating. Interment was at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Battle Creek.
Memorial contributions may be made to Special Olympics.

Merle L. Barstow
Merle L. “Muz” Barstow, 75, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003 in Charlotte.
Mr. Barstow was born Nov. 4, 1927 in Galesburg, Ill., the son of Randall and Marie (Blachley) Barstow. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Waverly School District as supervisor of transportation and building maintenance. Mr. Barstow was inducted into the Galesburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame in November 1999. He was a talented athlete in multiple sports, an avid golfer, and a wonderful husband and father.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Rachel Anne (Holscher); daughters, Susan (Bill) Taylor, Jane (Ken) Barstow Boettcher, Nancy Leavell; sons, Jim (Tammy) Barstow, Dan (Stacie) Barstow, Ben (Dawn) Barstow, Matt (Linda) Barstow; 16 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard (Lucy) and Russell (Carlene), both of Illinois. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diana Barstow. Graveside services were held Feb. 21 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rev. Brian Sheen officiating. Arrangements were by Rosier Funeral Home, Mapes-Fisher Chapel, Sunfield.
Helen E. Bassett
Helen E. Bassett, age 87, of Delta Township, passed away May 1, 2003 in Lansing. She was born July 13, 1915 in Bellevue, the daughter of Herbert and Grace (Stanton) Reynolds.
Helen was a graduate of Bellevue High School and Eaton County Normal School. She taught at Dolly Varden School and was a long-time employee of the state of Michigan Treasury Dept., retiring in 1978, and was a member of the State Employees Retirees Club. Helen was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Trinity 50+ Club. She was also a member of West Delta Helping Hand Club, Farm Bureau, and was a life and gold certificate member of Grand Ledge Chapter #14 OES, where she served as worthy matron and was an organist for many years.
She is survived by three sons, Arnold of Fife Lake, Gerald of South Boardman and Robert of Grand Ledge; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Reynolds of Bellevue; many nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Jessie Chapman of Grand Ledge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; daughter, Donna Bishop; and brothers, Don and Morris Reynolds.
Funeral services were held May 3 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge, with Pastor Jim Mort of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating. Interment followed at Delta Center Cemetery in Delta Township, Eaton County.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grand Ledge Chapter #14 OES.
William Bates
William Edmund Bates, 82, of Central Lake, died May 22, 2003. Mr. Bates was born May 30, 1920 the son of Frank V. and Esther V. (Edmunds) Bates.
He retired from the U.S. Navy and was a survivor of Pearl Harbor. He is survived by daughter Patricia (Paul) Roush of Charlotte, grandsons Wade E. Roush of San Francisco, CA. and James J. Roush of Fairbanks, Alaska.
A memorial service will be held at Torch Lake at a later date. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Central Lake Township Library or the WWII Memorial Fund.

Leo Robert Baumer
Leo R. Baumer, age 83 of Eaton Rapids, died Saturday, May 10, 2003 at a Lansing hospital. Born June 8, 1919 in Aurelius Township, the son of George and Jessie (Lambert) Baumer. Leo was a retired farmer who owned and operated the family farm in Aurelius Township. A member of the Robbins United Methodist Church, Life member of the F.&A.M. Lodge #63 and Life member of the O.E.S. #241 both of Eaton Rapids. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers and 3 sisters, Ivan and Paul Baumer, Lucille Baumer, Helen Veltman and Bernice Chapin and granddaughter Darcy.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years Mary (Bunker); 6 children, John (Charleen) Baumer of St. Cloud, FL., Alice Kelley of Mason, Paulette (Able) Arambula of Eaton Rapids, Duane (Sandy Sherman) Baumer of Leslie, Dennis Baumer of Eaton Rapids and Pete (Jeannine) Baumer of Eaton Rapids; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Kelley of Walled Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Stephen Klink of the Community Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Bunker Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial gifts may be made to Heartland Hospice, in memory of Leo R. Baumer.
Phyllis J. Baxter
Phyllis J. (Stacey) Baxter, 65, of Charlotte, died Tuesday, July 19, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Baxter was born July 26, 1938 in St. Louis, the daughter of Charles and Erma (Beuthin) Stacey and had been a Charlotte resident since 1969. She was a 1956 graduate of St. Louis High School, a retired Charlotte Public Schools secretary and enjoyed dressing dolls for the Charlotte Fire Department’s Christmas Kiddies program.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Ted Baxter; two daughter, Kristy (James) Manning and Gerri (Eric) Steiner, both of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and three brothers, Duane Stacey of Alma, Gary (Jean) Stacey of Greenville and Neil (Pat) Stacey of St. Louis.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammy Sue Baxter, on Jan. 12, 1978; and a sister, Bette Huber in 2002.
Private family graveside services were held at Oak Grove Cemetery in St. Louis.

Mona Jean Bayes
Mona Jean Bayes, age 65, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at her residence. Mona was born March 21, 1938 in Onondaga, the daughter of Roy Alonzo and Myrtle S. (Steel) Hill.
Surviving are her husband of 32 years, Ronald; 5 children, Pam (Tom) Bowlin of NM, David (Joan) Manchester, Shirley Miller, Ronald Bayes all of Eaton Rapids, Jill (Bill) Martines of Potterville; 8 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter; 2 brothers, Morris McKessy of Onondaga, Maynard (Sylvia) McKessy of Eaton Rapids; 2 sisters, Maxine Mintinc of Grand Rapids; Myrna (Arthur) Anderson of Charlotte and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Sid Waldrop, Josh Manchester, Scott Decess, Kevin McNutt, Jeff Wilson and Keith Wilson. Those desiring may make contributions to the Breslin Cancer Center in memory of Mona Jean Bayes.
Catherine M. Bayly
Catherine M. “Kay” Bayly, 67, of Tarpon Springs, formerly of St. Petersburg, died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003 at her home.
She was born in Watervliet, N.Y., came here in 1971 from Torrington, Conn., and moved to Tarpon Springs in 2001. She was a caterer, and active in Bay Pointe Little League and Lakewood Junior Spartans football. She was Catholic.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Barry; daughter, Kaylyn Bayly of Tarpon Springs; six sons, Barry Jr. of Torrington, Conn., Tim of St. Petersburg, Chris, Pace and Matt of Yuma, Ariz., David of Charlotte, and Jamie of Sanford; four sisters, Mary Muir of Watervliet, N.Y., Eleanor Cohen of Albany, N.Y., Betty McKeon of Surfside Beach, S.C. and Joan Prock of Poestenkill, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Gulfport Memorial Funeral Home.
