Ethel A. Buck
Ethel A. Buck, age 90, of Hastings, passed away May 22, 2003 at Moore’s Adult Foster Care in Charlotte.
Mrs. Buck was born Sept. 13, 1912 in Bosler, Wyo., the daughter of Elam and Earea (Edwards) Crook. She graduated from Hastings High School and received a teacher’s certificate from Barry County Normal and taught at Hastings Center School and Fish School. She was a member of Welcome Corners United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid Society, a Sunday school teacher, 4-H leader and 50-year member of Barry County Extension. She enjoyed gardening, canning, reading and traveling. Ethel married H. Kendall Buck Jan. 9, 1937.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Allen Buck, brother Sanford Crook, and sisters Rose Mary Messer and Frances Crook.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, H. Kendall Buck; children, Doreen (John) Campbell and Douglas (Nola) Buck, both of Charlotte, Lawrence Eddy (Barbara) Buck of Hastings, Marjorie (Dennis) Weingardt of Denver, Colo., Roseanne (David) Beehler of Golden, Colo.; grandchildren, Joan (Michael) Brennan, Thomas (Laurie) Campbell, Kimberlee (Ruben) Mars, Stephanie Buck, Stacey Buck, Nicholas Weingardt, Laura Weingardt, Brandon Beehler, Ryan Beehler, Michelle Beehler; and great-grandchildren, Samuel, Patrick, Margaret, Samantha and Carson.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at Welcome Corners United Methodist Church on M-43, north of Hastings, with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Interment will be at Fuller Cemetery following a luncheon at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Welcome Corners United Methodist Church of the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings.
Kathryn W. Buck
Kathryn Wonita Buck, 80, of Assyria Township, died March 26, 2003 at Battle Creek Health System.
She was born April 7, 1922 to George and Estie Mae (Rice) Bentz in Assyria Township. She graduated from Olivet High School and attended Kellogg Community College. Mrs. Buck worked as a clerk typist for the Michigan Employment Security Commission for over 17 years, retiring in 1986. She married Alvin James Buck Jan. 6, 1945 in Indiana; he died Oct. 9, 1999. Kathryn enjoyed quilting, embroidery, photography, reading, canning, traveling and attending garage sales. She also loved being outdoors gardening, walking, watching birds and other critters including bugs and snakes.
She is survived by her daughters, Eloise Mae Taylor of Traverse City and Louise Pearl Buck of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Simmons of Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by Sister Leatha Lucile Bentz, and brother George Bentz.
Services were held March 31 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor George Gay officiating. Interment was at Bell Cemetery in Assyria Township.

Jerry C. Bugbee
Jerry C. Bugbee, of Onondaga, passed away at home under the loving care of his family and hospice on Wednesday, July 23, 2003, at the age of 61. Jerry was an original member of the Onondaga Gun Club. He started working at the gas station at the age of 11 and he then ran his own garage for almost 45 years. Jerry was a long time member of the Leslie American Legion and the Jackson Eagles 612. He was also one of the original Onondaga Firemen.
Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Joan, five stepchildren, Steven Jones, Timothy Jones, Dennis Jones, Gregory (Cindy) Jones, and Susan Jones; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, three brothers, Bob, Jack and Jim; four sisters, Lillian, Esther, Sandra and Joan, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
According to his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at the Robertson Funeral Homes, Leslie Chapel, on Friday, July 25, 2003. For those who wish memorial contributions may be made to the Onondaga Fire Department.
Louise Isabell Burk
Louise Isabell Burk, age 72, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, December 26, 2003 in DeWitt. Born July 12, 1931 in Lansing, the daughter of William Fred and Emma Liddy (Lenon) Sherman. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Sherman and parents.
Surviving are her husband of 54 years; Albert; 3 sisters, Violet (Dennis) Fox of Alpena, Thelma (Gerry) Swartz of DeWitt and Lullabell Croy of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Alice Burk of Lansing; several nieces and nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 29, 2003 from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice in Memory of Louise I Burk.
Norma J. Burke
Norma J. Burke, age 82 of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, January 12, 2003 in Lansing. Norma was born January 18, 1920 in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Harold Raymond and Clara (Purse) MacArthur. Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Carl C. Burke in 2000 and her niece, Sharon Ann Wynne in 1999.
Surviving are her 2 sisters, twin, Dorothy (Bill) Allen, Adele (Marvin Lang) Akley; nephew, Kenneth Eaves; and grandnephew, Nicholas Eaves all of Holt.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, 2:00 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
Karla Burkwalt
Karla Burkwalt, 56, of Springport, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 at her home. She was born Aug. 11, 1944 in South Bend, Ind. to Robert and Phyllis (Lefler) Weaver.
Karla was employed as a medical assistant in adult foster care and enjoyed playing bingo, flower arranging, fishing and helping others.
Survivors include one daughter, Lisa (Danny) Newsome of Springport; two sons, Darin Kelley St. of Albion and Phillip Kuk of Eaton Rapids; one sister, Karen Williams of South Bend, Ind.; one brother, Raymond Weaver of Berrington; and six grandchildren.
Her parents preceded her in death.
Graveside services were held July 29 at Hunt Cemetery in Clarence Township, with Rev. Earl Martin officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the family or American Heart Association. Arrangements were by J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home of Albion.
Roberta L. Burleson
Roberta “Robin” L. (Bosworth) Burleson, age 45 of Eaton Rapids, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 from her residence, peacefully with her family by her side. She was born December 11, 1957 in Lansing, the daughter of Wesley A. and Waneta J. (Carey) Bosworth. Robin grew up in the Sunfield area and had formerly worked for the State of Michigan and for General Motors in Lansing. Preceding her in death was her mother, Waneta and sister, Mary.
Surviving are her husband of 16 years, Bill; daughter, Maryanna Burleson; father, Wesley (Gerry Franks) Bosworth of Fruitport; brother, Allen (Teddy Miller) Bosworth of Muskegon, twin brother, Raymond Bosworth of Muskegon; sister, Julia (Jim) Vedder of Mulliken; many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, February 11, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with Pastor Glenn Shelton, officiating. Burial will follow in Meadowbrook Cemetery in Mulliken. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ingham Visiting Nurse Hospice in memory of Roberta “Robin” L. Burleson.
Richard A. Butler Sr.
Richard A. Butler Sr., age 53, of Mulliken, passed away Aug. 29, 2003 in Charlotte.
He was born Feb. 21, 1950 in Lansing, the son of Donald and Doris (Peiffer) Butler. Richard was a truck driver for Blazer Trucking, served in the U.S. Navy, was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors.
He is survived by one son, Richard Jr. (Krista) of Portland; two daughters, Lisa (Josh) Burt of Potterville and Jennifer (Chad) Johnson of Perrinton; nine grandchildren; his father, Donald Butler of Grand Ledge; one brother, Jim (Karen) Butler of Perry; and one sister, Mary (Bob) Gidley of Grand Ledge.
Funeral services were held Sept. 3 at Peters & Murray Funeral Home in Grand Ledge. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Grand Ledge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard Butler Memorial Fund.
Julia Ann Byer
Julia Ann Byer, age 70 of Holt and formerly of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003 at a Lansing hospital. Born December 7, 1932 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of John Wheeler and Clara Mable (Coats) Norris. Julia was a retired Executive Secretary for the Michigan Hospital Association. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids, former President of the Eaton Rapids B.P.W. and the Eaton Rapids Welcome Wagon. Preceding her in death were a son, Christopher; parents; and brother, Robert Norris.
Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Samuel Wayne Byer; 3 sons, Jeffery A. Byer of Holt; Craig (Tomoko) Byer of Columbus, Ohio and Scott (Fonda) Byer of Springport; daughter-in-law, Tami Byer of Holt; 7 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter; 3 sisters, Maxine Ferguson of Eaton Rapids, Phyllis (Howard) Haven of Onondaga, and Janet (Clayton) Elston of Eaton Rapids; sister-in-law, Gertrude Norris of Eaton Rapids and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 26, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Tom Evans, officiating. Burial followed in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the Mother Theresa House in memory of Julia A. Byer.
