Thelma D. Calvin
Thelma D. Calvin of Charlotte, was born Sept. 20, 1912 in Urbana, Ohio, and died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003 at the age of 90.
Mrs. Calvin retired from Oldsmobile in 1973. She had been a Lansing resident since 1919, and moved to charlotte in 1975. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Charlotte and a member of Bastogne Luzen VFW 8715 Auxiliary in Battle Creek.
She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Ernest Calvin; son, Clyde Dietz; daughter, Norma Powell; step-son, Dennis Calvin; step-daughter, Donna Sebrell; 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Skiles in 1993 in Springfield, Ohio.
Funeral services were held Jan. 15 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Timothy Olson officiating. Interment followed at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to the West Fund at Peace Lutheran Church, which helps people in need. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Norman J. Campbell
Norman John Campbell passed away Aug. 21, 2003 after a battle with cancer.
Norm retired from Oldsmobile as a Quality Engineer manager in 1988 after a 32-year career. Norm also served his country in the National Guard for 14 years and retired as battery commander of the Charlotte unit. Norm, and his wife Wilma of 47 years, had 15 healthy years of retirement together. They attended many memorable functions with family and friends during that time. They recently moved form their Florida home back to Charlotte and have spent a great deal of family time at their lakefront home near Gladwin. Norm had a great passion for golf and played many championship courses around the country over the years. He shared his love of the game with many of his family members and friends, as he was [a] great teacher of the sport. He also enjoyed fishing, which he learned from his father. He and four brothers enjoyed growing up on Pine Lake in his boyhood hometown of Olivet. Norm was always eager to engage in a good political discussion, or any other controversial subject that came about. He also enjoyed studying history, philosophy and Bible study. He was passionate about discussing his Christian life with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
Norm was preceded in death by his father, George Campbell in 1995.
Norm is survived by his mother, Beatrice Campbell of Olivet; his wife, Wilma of Charlotte; three children, Lori (Rex) Baum of Charlotte,
Andy (Cammi) Campbell of Eaton Rapids and Mary Jo Campbell Mills of Lansing; six grandchildren; Ryan, Patrick and Holly Baum, Corey and Kindra Campbell, and Jason Mills; four brothers, David (Judy) of Olivet, Gerald (Shirley) of Bellevue, Daniel of Lansing, and Brian (Sharon) of Gross Point Farms; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services were held Aug. 25 at the First Congregational Church of Olivet, with Pastor Jack Skirvin and Dr. Roy Backus officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice or the American Cancer Society; envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Dorothy Evelyn “Dottie” Carpenter
Dorothy Evelyn “Dottie” Carpenter, age 71 of Charlotte died Saturday, November 29, 2003 in Lasing, Michigan. Mrs. Carpenter was born February 16, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Morris and Evelyn (Amaro) Gray, Sr. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, a former school bus driver, and had been a volunteer for the Eaton Community Hospice, Helping Hands, the Siren Eaton Shelter and she and her husband were active in the Meals on Wheels program. They especially loved visiting lighthouses throughout Michigan.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bruce R. Carpenter, daughters Catherine (John) Kallioinen of Eaton Rapids, Cris Carpenter of Battle Creek, son Michael (Diane) Carpenter of Asheville, North Carolina, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, brothers Donald Gray of West Greenwich, Rhode Island, Joseph Gray of Minden, Louisiana and sister Gertrude Gulyas of Juneau, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her brother Morris Gray, Jr.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at Pray Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Yeagley officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hamlin Township, Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Elsie May Carroll
Elsie May Carroll, 90 of Charlotte, died April 23, 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility. Mrs. Carroll was born Feb. 17, 1913 in Charlotte, the daughter of John Henry and Mary Louise (Potter) Kellogg.
She attended the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, enjoyed crocheting and her family. She is survived by sons Robert and Donald (Shirley) Carroll both of Charlotte, Leo (Margaret) of Nashville, daughters Barbara Rolfe of Vermontville, Doris Sherman of Allegan, and Pamela of Eaton Rapids, 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Claude in 1981 and son Richard in 1996, parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2003 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Elsie May Carroll

Raymundo Cena Jr.
Raymundo Cena Jr., age 79, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003. He was born Feb. 6, 1924 in Laredo, Texas, the son of the late Raymundo Sr. and Angela (Rodriquez) Cena.
Mr. Cena was raised in Laredo, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a staff sergeant in the 555th Army Air Forces Base Unit, Army of the United States, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, earning a Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal. After serving his country, he graduated from Kilgore College, studying mechanical engineering.
He and his brothers were very proud of the fact that they all served their country in either World War II or the Korean War. After 42 years of service, Raymundo retired from the Olofsson Corp. as a tool and die maker in 1993, and was a member of UAW Local #724.
He was a self-made mechanic who loved photography and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Raymundo was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Estella; brother, Armando; sister, Hortencia Garcia; and special uncle, Matias Rodriguez.
Surviving are his loving wife of 37 years, Romaine; five children, Victor (Linda) Cena, Maria Patino, Jim Patino, Patty (Jeff) Rienstra, Theresa (Brian) Ross and Laura (Kurt) Doten; grandchildren, Michael, Angela and Rebecca Cena; Nathan and Nicholas Patino; Rachael Rienstra; Dillon and Gabriel Ross; siblings, Frank (Carmella) Cena, Angelina Pena, Ramiro (Irma) Cena and Ernesto Cena; sister-in-law, Inez Cena; half-brother, Javier (Yolanda) Cena; and half-sister, Maria Cena.
A funeral mass was held July 28 at St. Gerard Catholic Church, with Rev. Fr. John Fain as celebrant. Interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Marilyn J. Charboneau
Marilyn J. (Fassett-Starr) Charboneau, 68, of Pinckney, died Saturday morning, Aug. 30, 2003 at her residence.
She was born Oct. 6, 1934 in Maple Grove Township, the daughter of Floyd and Lillian Esther Doty Fassett. She married Clement “Kem” Charboneau Sept. 18, 1981 in Ypsilanti. Marilyn was a secretary for the Financial Dept. at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Deborah Garrett of Georgia, Cynthia Marie Belville of Ann Arbor and Tamara Starr of Munith; one son, Michael Starr of Whitmore Lake; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gary Fassett of Montana.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Gaylord Fassett.
Funeral mass was held Sept. 2 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pinckney, with Rev. Fr. Kenneth Coughlin officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Arrangements were by Shelters Funeral Home of Pinckney.
Gail Cheney
Gail Robert Cheney, formerly from Nacogdoches, Texas, lived with is daughter Betty and her family in Chester Township, MI for two years prior to dying on Sept. 9, 2003 at the age of 83. He was born in Tekonsha, MI.
After serving as an Army “eye in the sky” reconnaissance pilot in World War II, he completed graduate studies in education at Michigan State University. He taught in both the Laingsburg and Hillman school districts and finished his career as principal of Flushing High school.
He was a proud member of the Lion’s Club, and while with the Airway Underwriter’s Association he ascended to the Million Dollar Club in 1968. He also enjoyed watching military planes fly in and out of Selfridge ANG Base near his home in Chesterfield.
He is survived by his daughter, Betty (Richard) Puffer, son Steven (Anke) Cheney, brothers Gordon (Loretta) Cheney and Dr. William (Eleanor) Cheney, five stepchildren, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and his constant companion, Max the family’s dog.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean, second wife, Virginia, brothers Dr. Edward A. Cheney, Harold Cheney and sister Marian Herman.
Memorial service will be held at Deepdale Cemetery, Lansing, on Sept. 27, 2003 at 3 p.m.
