Harold A. Cheney
Harold A. Cheney, 76, of Almira Township, Benzie County, died Monday, June 30, 2003 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Mr. Cheney was born July 15, 1926 in Tekonsha, the son of Albert and Allie (Grice) Cheney. After graduation from Charlotte High School, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Cheney had been a resident of Benzie County for the past three years and had previously resided in Bear Lake, Arcadia and Okemos. He retired in 1988 after serving 20 years as a technician for the state of Michigan in the Bridge Design Division. He was a member of Experimental Pilots Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Beulah. On April 12, 1969 in Okemos, he married Rose Essenberg.
Surviving are his wife Rose; a son, Mark Dean (Jackie) Cheney of Beggs, Okla.; two daughters, Jolene Wyman of Dimondale and Barbara (Miguel) Cheney-Mata of El Segundo, Calif.; three stepsons, Alvin DeYoung of Austin, Texas, John (Imgard) DeYoung of DeWitt and Donald DeYoung of Anchorage, Alaska; 14 grandchildren; and three brothers, Dr. William (Eleanor) Cheney of East Lansing, Gail Cheney of Chesterfield and Gordon (Loretta) Cheney of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dr. Edward Cheney; and a sister, Madan Herman.
Funeral Services were held July 3 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Beulah, with Rev. Thomas Nelson officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the Michigan Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Rebecca A. Cherry
Rebecca A. Cherry, 73, of Ellsworth, formerly of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 8, 2003.
Mrs. Cherry was born April 14, 1929 in Lansing, the daughter of Albert and Esther (Kraft) Hurlbut. Mrs. Cherry had been a long time member of Crossroads Church of the United Brethren. She married Maurice Cherry, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by sons, Eric (Gail) of Ellsworth and Calvin (Wilma Jo) of Charlotte; daughters, Linda (Tony) Reiff of Bluffton, Ind., Bonnie Cherry of Lansing, and Maurine (Tom) Bethke of Harbor Springs; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Marian Baker, Judith Cain and Rosemary Rowley; and brother, James Hurlbut.
Funeral services were held March 11 at Crossroads United Brethren Church in Charlotte, with Harold, Herbert and Howard Cherry officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
If desired memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads United Brethren Church, Charlotte. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
James Chisholm
James Chisholm, age 87 of Jackson, passed away on February 5, 2003 at Vista Grande Villa in Jackson. He was born August 28, 1915 in St. Andrews, Scotland, the son of David and Annie Chisholm. Jim served in the Army during World War II. He owned the Bonnie View Golf Course near Eaton Rapids for twenty-five years. His father was the first pro at Arbor Hills Country Club in Jackson.
He is survived by sisters Doris (Frank) Schultz and Laura (Leo) Judy; brother William (Rose Mary) Chisholm; step-daughters Sarah (Bruce) Copp and Jeannie (David) Werkema of Eaton Rapids; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary and sister Mary Ankrom.
According to his wishes, cremation had taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, February 14, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Vista Grande Villa, 2251 Springport Road, Jackson with Rev. Ed Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids.
Howard P. Chupp
Howard P. “Chip” Chupp, 43, of Bellevue, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003 at Pennock Hospital in Hastings after a tractor turnover.
Howard was born Sept. 27, 1959 in Battle Creek, the son of Howard and Barbara (Wenger) Chupp and graduated from Bellevue High School in 1977. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 13, 1977 to June 12, 1981, having served as a sonar technician on the USS Leahy and USS Exploit, with over three and a half years of sea service. Howard was employed by Summitt Polymers in Kalamazoo for three years with Hot Set, Hy-Lex, Millers’ Trucking and at Kalamazoo Regional Airport in Home Security with the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA).
He married Nancy Creller on Oct. 15, 1983 at our Lady of Great Oak Catholic Church. Howard was a member of Our Lady of Great Oak Catholic Church, where he served as Eucharistic minister and sang in the choir. He was a 4-H leader, involved in shooting sports, and cannonry and black powder weapons. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed poetry.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy (Creller) Chupp; sons, Arthur Patrick and Henry Joseph Chupp, both at home; mother, Barbara Chupp of Bellevue; sister, Terry Sue (Larry) Wiliford of Ottawa, Kansas, Lucy (Larry) Potter and Gail Marie (Tom) Robinson, both of Bellevue, Patti Ann (William) Blanchard of Clarkston and Laura Joy (Peter) Harris of Charlotte.
He was preceded in death by father Howard R. Chupp on Sept. 22, 1998.
Funeral mass was held Dec. 9 at Our Lady of Great Oak Catholic Church, with Rev. Father John Fleckenstein officiating. Burial was at Fort Custer National Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Fort Custer National Cemetery Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Howard P. Chupp Children’s Education Fund at Independent Bank in Bellevue.

Pearl Clark
Pearl Clark, age 90, of Onondaga, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at her home. Pearl was born September 27, 1913 in Leslie, the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Leech) Miller. Pearl’s husband Clyde preceded her in death. She was a supervisor at the VFW National Home for 33 years before retiring.
Mrs. Clark is survived by her daughter Yvonne (Richard) Dodge of Springport; 3 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; several great great-grandchildren; sisters: Elmira Munro, and Margaret (Andrew) Lock; and a special, special friend Floyd Smith. Besides her husband, Pearl was preceded in death by 1 son Charles Clark; 2 granddaughters, Sarah Clark and Jessica Cummins; 1 grandson James Dean Clark and 3 brothers and 1 sister.
The funeral was held Friday, October 24, 2003 at the Robertson Funeral Home, Leslie with burial in Onondaga Cemetery. Memorial may be made to Heartland Hospice.
Jodi Clone
Jodi Clone, daughter-in-law of Gaylord and Eunice Clone, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2003 in Ponca City, Oklahoma after a long illness. She was a native Oklahoman born June 23, 1971.
She is survived by her husband Kevin, whom she married January 1, 2001; two sons, Sam and Jack; three stepsons Kenneth (Tarasa), Kyle (Shaminy) and Kristopher Clone; brother-in-law Kirk; sisters-in-law Kathryn and Kara (James) Barnhart.
Funeral arrangements are pending in Ponca City.
Norine Maye Clone
Norine Maye Clone, age 82 of Eaton Rapids, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2003 in Lansing, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Norine was born November 2, 1920 in Albion, MI, the daughter of Glenn David and Meda Amy (Snow) Adams. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eaton Rapids and retired from the Eaton Rapids School System in food service.
Norine is survived by 1 daughter, Shari (John) Polansky of Belvidere, IL; 9 sons, Gary (Marcia) Clone of Williamsburg, MI, Wayne (Dianne) Clone of Eaton Rapids, Michael (Cindy) Clone of Eaton Rapids, Terry (Jill) Clone of Fishers, IN, Ron (Marguerite) Clone of Brookfield, WI, Pat (Peggy) Clone of Onondaga, Phil (Laurie) Clone of Corona, CA, Al (Susan) Clone of Onondaga, Bob (Marianne) Clone of Holt; 21 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 2 sisters, Dorothy (Ed) Carlson of Parma and Karen (Dan) Rayner of Honor.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 29, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Pastor Tom Evans officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Those desiring may make contributions to the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in memory of Norine M. Clone.
Mable E. Clough
Mable Eva Clough, 88, of Charlotte, died Thursday, May 15, 2003.
Mrs. Clough was born Jan. 30, 1915 in Charlotte, the daughter of Orland and Lulu (Andrews) Winslow. She was a member of First Congregational Church. She was also a member of I Go U Go Club, 500 Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Suzanne (Bob) Keehne of Shelby; granddaughters, Jackie (Doug) Miron, Kathy (Jason) Lewis; great-granddaughter, Abigale Sue Lewis; sister, Doris Holly of Charlotte; nieces and nephews, Jeannie Collins, Kim Collins, Kevin (Melinda) Collins, Kathy (Bill) Andrews, Angie (Matt) Birk, and Molly Andrews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Clough in 1960, and nephew Rick Collins in 2000.
Funeral services were held May 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling officiating. Interment was at Oakwood Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to Michigan Library for the Blind.
Irene Ann Coats
Irene A. Coats, age 72 of Eaton Rapids, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and caregiver, lost a courageous battle against cancer, on Thursday, March 27, 2003 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing. Born March 16, 1931 in St. Johns, the daughter of John and Ann (Durkovic) Martis. Irene was a 1949 graduate of Olivet High School. She had worked 15 years for Schaffer’s Bakery in Lansing and had retired from the Eaton Stamping Co. in Eaton Rapids in 1996. As a life member of the Brookfield O.E.S. #352, she held the starpoint station of Esther; a position her mother-in-law held for many years, and was life member of the C.S.A. Preceding her in death were her parents and a grandson Daniel Coats Jr.
Surviving are her husband of 53, Donald “Jack” Coats of Eaton Rapids; 3 children, Don “Cody” Coats, Dan (Cheryl Hector) Coats and Diana Wait, all of Eaton Rapids; grandson, Nick Wait of Eaton Rapids; granddaughters, Lisa (Steve) Brown of Ypsilanti; great-grandson Doug Britton; 2 sisters, Dorothy (Jim) Wirt and Betty (Jim) Dent all of CA; brother, John (Duane) Martis of Potterville; several nieces, nephews and special cousins and many friends.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial of cremains will follow in the Clarence Center Cemetery in Calhoun country. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of Irene A.
