Dennis W. Coffey
Dennis W. Coffey, 58, of Hiram, Ga., formerly of Eaton Rapids, passed away Monday, July 14, 2003. He was born Oct. 16, 1944 in Charlotte.
Dennis was a Vietnam veteran and was employed as a detention officer for the Smyrna Police Dept. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Dennis enjoyed surfing the net and until recent years, hunting and fishing. He will be remembered for his sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sandra; one daughter, Kelly (Dan) Robertson of Woodstock, GA.; four sons, Jack (Tammy) Coffey of Lansing, Phil (Kelly) Coffey of Smyrna, Ga., Bill (Deana) Coffey of Ithaca and Michael Coffey of Hiram, Ga.; three brothers, Steve (Teka) Coffey of New Hill, N.C., Tom (Vi) Coffey of Lansing, James (Jennifer) Coffey of Battle Creek; two sisters, Penny Coffey of Marshall and Jean (George) Makin of Lansing; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held July 18 by Castellaw Funeral Home in Smyrna, Ga.

Thelma Cogswell
Thelma Cogswell, 89, of Charlotte, died May 19, 2003 at Marshall Manor in Marshall.
Mrs. Cogswell was born Dec. 28, 1913 in Eaton County, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Midland) Diamond. She was a clerk for 25 years with the G.C. Murphy Company in Charlotte.
She is survived by her son, Donald (Donna) Cogswell of Charlotte; five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leman; sons, Gary and Richard; brothers, Murray, Earl and Harley Diamond; and sisters, Bethel Robinson and Flossie Diamond.
Funeral services were held May 22 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital and Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
Betty L. Colby
Betty L. Colby, 80, of Olivet, died Wednesday, April 23, 2003.
Mrs. Colby was born Aug. 12, 1922 in Detroit, the daughter of Walsh and Lelia (Redwine) Williamson. She volunteered at SIREN/Eaton Shelter working with the food program.
She loved her family and is survived by daughter, Sandra (George) Ohannesian of Taylor; son, Robert Colby of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, Michael (Nancy) and David (Joanne); three great-grandchildren, David Polidori, Emily and Erik Ohannesian; brother, Walsh (Lillie) Williamson Jr. of Kentucky; and niece, Joyce Ann.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Colby in 1994.
Funeral services were held April 26 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Nancy Oliver officiating.

Doris M. Colles
Doris Marguerite Colles, 83, of Charlotte, died Nov. 22, 2003 at Tendercare in Marshall.
She was born Jan. 11, 1920 to Mile and Avis (Waterbury) Jones in Bellevue. She graduated from Bellevue High School and worked at Post Cereals during World War II. Doris married Gordon Colles Dec. 6, 1941 in Bellevue; he died June 11, 1998. Doris was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Bellevue Garden Club, Bellevue United Methodist Church and the church circle. She was a 4-H leader and enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by son, Gary (Sylvia) Colles of Charlotte; daughter, Linda Colles (James Whitt) of Gobles; grandchildren, Timothy (Jessica) Colles of Potterville, Matthew Colles of Ypsilanti, Gordon Lake (Mandy Mynhier) of Battle Creek; great-grandchildren, “JJ” and Robert; step-grandchildren, Stacie Allen and her son James of Knoxville, Tenn. and Windy Whitt and her daughter Calsey of Allegan.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Services were held Nov. 26 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Mark Thompson officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.

Charles W. Collins
Charles W. Collins, 82, of Marshall, died March 20, 2003 in Harlingen, Texas.
Mr. Collins was born March 12, 1921 in Ingham County to Orville and Laura (Baker) Collins and graduated from Bellevue High School. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in World War II. Mr. Collins owned and operated Collins Garbage Service for 42 years in Bellevue, Olivet, Pennfield and Emmett Townships, retiring in 1990. He was a member of the Bellevue and Olivet Lions Clubs and Bellevue Conservation Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, travel, wintering in Florida and Texas and auto races. Charles married Ella Althouse May 30, 1950; she died Nov. 3, 1994.
Surviving are sons, Carey Lee (Sarah) Collins of Marshall, Larry Collins and Keith (Patti) Halverson of Battle Creek; daughter, Linda (Jim) Tarmnel of Marshall; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brother, Orla Collins of North Carolina; and companion Mona Moeckel.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Bea French, Margaret Schroeder and Rachel Reed.
Private family committal was held at Austin Cemetery in Convis Township. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Charles Hanlon of Marshall Seventh-day Adventist Church officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall Community Foundation’s Ella “Gwen” Collins Nursing Scholarship or the Bellevue-Olivet Lions Club. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Mary M. Collins
Mary M. Collins, age 97, of Eaton Rapids, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. She was born in Gleason, Tennessee on September 15, 1906 to Wesley and Mary Lomax. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman D. Collins in 1974 and grandson, Guy Lance Carlton in 1998.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Rosie Fay Stewart of Eaton Rapids and Bobbie Sue Luken of Lansing; 5 grandchildren, Dr. Rick Carlton of Atlanta, GA., Robyn Flanders and Tad Carlton, both of Lansing, Judy Smith of Lansing and Peggy Kellman of California; sister, Imogene Beasley of Lansing.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, December 10 at 11:00 a.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Wednesday.
LuElla Cook
LuElla Cook, 78, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003 at Ingham Regional Assisted Living Center in Lansing.
Mrs. Cook was born Sept. 13, 1924 in Lansing and had been a Charlotte resident since 1951. She was a graduate of Michigan State University and had been employed as a physical education teacher, occupational therapist and social worker at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility. She had also served as a Girl Scout troop leader.
Surviving are two sons, Fred (Mary) Cook of Indianapolis, Ind. and Dave (Teresa) Cook of Houston, Texas; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell B. Cook in 1992.
At Mrs. Cook’s request, her body has been donated to the Willed Body Program at Michigan State University. Private family memorial services were held at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Area Senior Center, Ingham Visiting Nurse and Hospice, or Hayes Green Beach Hospital.
Peter M. Cooper, Jr.
Peter M. Cooper, Jr., age 49, of Springport, died Monday, October 27, 2003 at his residence. Peter was born May 2, 1954 in Jackson. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1972 and General Motors Institute in 1978. He was a US National Champion Boat Racer, a member of AOPA and loved flying with Volunteer Mercy Pilots. Pete was instrumental in starting Special Olympics in Eaton Rapids while president of the Kiwanis Club. He was a dealer with Cooper Chevy-Olds in Eaton Rapids and was a member of Michigan Auto Dealers Association, member of the Jackson and Lansing Board of Realtors and the Lansing Builders Association. Peter was formerly employed with Citizens Bank in Jackson and currently as a loan officer with Huntington Mortgage in Holt. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter M. Cooper, Sr. in 1989.
Surviving are his wife, Wendi (Bemis); 2 sons, Ben (Amber) Cooper, Charlie Cooper, both of Eaton Rapids; 2 grandsons, Austin and Wyatt; mother, DeEtte Hilderbrandt of Homer; stepmother, Mary I. Cooper of Eaton Rapids; brother, John (Leighann) Cooper of Eaton Rapids; 4 sisters, Marlene (Andy) Stemaly of Tekonsha, Nanette (Bob) Rupinski of Laingsburg, Delores “DeeDee” (David) Behnke of Kansas, Wilhemina (Loni) Spence of Jackson and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated on October 31 at St. Peter Church, Eaton Rapids, with Fr. Bennett Constantine as Celebrant. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family was served by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make contributions to the family for their discretionary use in memory of Peter M. Cooper, Jr.
