Lonnie L. Cords

Lonnie Lynn Cords, age 57, of Parma, lost his fight with brain cancer May 13, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Cords was born June 28, 1945 in Charlotte, the son of Loyd Washington Cords and Florence Mae (Boyd) Cords. He married Karen Lee (Kreger) Spencer July 31, 1982 in Jackson. Lonnie had been a resident of the Olivet and Charlotte area most of his life prior to moving to the Parma area. He was an accountant for Johnson Lumber in Charlotte and Three Rivers, and Comerica Bank and Air Master Fan in Jackson. He attended MSU, JCC and Lansing Community College. HE was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War era, and a member of DAV, William Sparks Chapter 4 – Jackson. Lonnie’s favorite hobbies were working around the house and building things, traveling, camping, family get-togethers, hunting, fishing, and helping others, but mostly Lonnie and his wife Karen could be found at their grandchildren’s sports games. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Cords of Parma; son, Charles (Ginger) Spencer of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; daughter, Teresa (Robert) Lyon of Springport; grandchildren, Kala and Kristine Spencer of Concord, Zachery and Bo Lyon of Springport, Courtney Spencer of Rolling Prairie, Ind., Angela (Justin) Bird of Laporte, Ind. and Nicki Cook of Laporte, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Codee and Emilee Bird of Laporte, Ind.; brothers, Terry (Karon) Cords of Olivet and Jerry Cords of Charlotte; sister, Connie (James) Hiatt of Deming, N.M.; numerous nieces and nephews; ex-daughter-in-law, Michele Spencer; and his little Sheltie dog, Ginger Sue.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held May 16 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor James Waddell officiating. A memorial service was held at Tidd-Williams Funeral Chapel of Albion. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice of Jackson.

Irvin W. Covell

Irvin William Covell, 73, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2003.

Mr. Covell was born March 6, 1929 in Osceola County, the son of Milo William and Anna May (Bennett) Covell. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for G.M. for 30 years as a rack repairman, retiring in 1982, and was currently a member of UAW 652 retirees.

Mr. Covell was a member of the Eaton County Draft Horse and Pony Club. He married Joyce Parks on Sept. 4, 1953 in Holt; she preceded him in death in February 1992.

He is survived by daughters, Lois Sensat and Mary Jo Covell, both of Charlotte, and her special friend Larry Gillett; three grandchildren, Rick (Corie) Parker, Donna Parker and special friend Ramon Burns, and Jennifer Houseman; three great-grandchildren, Courtney and Sean Gagne, and Aryan Burns; brothers, Norman Covell of Charlotte, and Harry and Earl Covell of Okemos; sisters, Nellie (Russell) Bloom of Lansing and Norma (Howard) Bristol of Charlotte.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; brothers; James Covell and Donald Covell; and sisters, Betty Holmes, Gladys Westbrook, and Lila Epps.

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Michael Knauff officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery in Charlotte. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Michael R. Cowan

Michael Robert Cowan, 49, of Battle Creek, died Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 at home.

He was born Aug. 7, 1954 to Richard and Sandra (Coles) Cowan in Battle Creek. He graduated from Bellevue High School in 1972. Michael served in the Army from 1972 to 1978 and the Army National Guard until 1982. He worked as a nursing assistant at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, Southwest Michigan Rehabilitation Hospital and Visiting Nurses of Battle Creek. He most recently worked as a volunteer at the Battle Creek Walk-In Clinic. Michael loved the out of doors and performing in the theatre. He was an original member of West Street Players of Bellevue and the Bellevue Community Theatre.

Michael is survived by his mother, Sandra Cowan of Bellevue; daughter, Autumn Cowan of Lakeland, Fla.; sister, Dr. Michelle Cowan Daly DVM of Bellevue; brother, Richard Cowan of Lynn Haven, Fla.; and two nephews, Patrick and Logan Daly, whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Cowan, and his grandparents.

Graveside services were held Sept. 25 at Fort Custer National Cemetery, with Pastor Jim Mathias officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund or Salvation Army. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Scott R. Cozart

Scott R. Cozart, 48, of Charlotte, died Thursday, May 8, 2003.

Mr. Cozart was born Feb. 2, 1955 in Lasing, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cozart. He had been a resident of the Birch Hill Home for the Handicapped for 20 years.

He is survived by many special friends.

Funeral services were held May 13 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Randy Royston officiating. Interment was at Center Eaton Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Alice M. Cronk

Alice Mae (Ploof) Cronk, 88, of Charlotte, died Sunday, July 27, 2003.

Mrs. Cronk was born Sept. 29, 1914 in Chester Township, the daughter of the late John Ploof and the late Lena (McLaughlin) Ploof. She was a member of Charlotte Eagles Aerie #3552. Mrs. Cronk had worked at Wilcox-Gay, Michigan National Bank and retired from Lansing Candy Co., and was an avid bingo player.

She is survived by daughter, Eileen Mund of Charlotte; son, Ardon (Sharon) Cronk of Charlotte; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Frances Ploof of Lansing.

She was preceded in death by husband Verdon Cronk in 1978, brother, James Ploof in 1977, and sister, Josepha Ploof in 2001.

Funeral services were held July 31 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Bruce L. Crothers

Bruce L. Crothers, 93, of Vermontville, died at his home Sunday evening, Feb. 9, 2003.

Mr. Crothers was born Aug. 14, 1909 in Fife Lake, to Miner and Cora (Battenfield) Crothers. He graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1930 and married Edna Gould, his long-time sweetheart, on July 14, 1935. They moved to their farm near Vermontville in 1945, where Bruce farmed until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Crothers had been a member of the Sunfield Fire Board for 19 years, a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau for 57 years, a long-time member of Woodland United Methodist Church, and an avid bowler all of his life.

He is survived by Edna, his wife of 67 years; daughter, Joy Crothers Angel of Vermontville; daughter-in-law, Vera Crothers of Lansing; grandchildren, Bryce (Cheryl) Angel, David Angel, Ruth Ann Crothers and Ellen (Michael) Angel-Williams; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Bryce T. Angel, Claire and Jacob Angel-Williams, and Erin Crothers; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Roy Crothers; grandson, Bruce Archie Crothers; two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Feb. 12 at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. Interment was at Woodland Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lakewood Community Ambulance or Eaton Community Hospice.

Miles L. Crow

Miles Louis “Joe” Crow, passed away March 15, 2003.

Miles, or “Joe” as everyone knew him, was an avid hunter, fisherman, gardener and family man. He was a friend to all and there when he was needed. He was formerly employed by the Battle Creek Enquirer for 46 years, retiring in September 1997. Mr. Crow was a lifelong member of the Masons, Bedford Lodge 207 and a member of Eagles Aerie 299.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Shirley (Casebeer) Crow; daughter, Carla (Crow) Petch of Battle Creek; son, Russell Crow of Bellevue; grandchildren, Tasha Petch, Satena Petch, Dezzmundd Petch; great-grandson, Austin Petch; special niece, Linda Dunkelberger; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Miles and Ruby Crow; brothers, Floyd, Robert and Russell Crow; sisters, Mary Kurth, Flora House and Idabelle Rogers; and nephew, Tony Dunkelberger.

Services were held March 18 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Jeffrey Homan officiating. Interment was at Assyria Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Calvin Csatlos

Calvin Peter Csatlos, 75, of Arvada, Colorado, died Jan. 2, 2003 after eight weeks of hospice care.

Calvin was a retired commercial appraiser and Air Force Veteran of WW II.

He is survived by his wife, Dale Anne Csatlos, daughter Laurie Painter; son Kevin Csatlos, step-son Jeff Rodewald and step-daughter Margo Price.

Future arrangements will be by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.
