Phillip J. Duling

Phillip J. Duling, age 35, of Eaton Rapids, Co-Owner of Windsor Steel in Potterville, died of natural causes on September 1, 2003. Born October 19, 1967 in Lansing, Phil was a 1986 graduate of Holt High School and a member of the Iron Workers Local #25. His 17 year welding career was highlighted with the honor of erecting a piece of metal wreckage that was salvaged from the New York World Trade Center at Lansing’s Wentworth Park on September 4, 2002. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and had an endless love for farming. Preceding him in death was his mother, Cindy Bronga Duling in 1984.

Surviving are the mother of his children, Lori Duling of Eaton Rapids and her parents, Verlon and Kathy Graham; son, Zachary Duling and daughter, Amber Graham, both of Eaton Rapids; parents, Bruce and Lois Duling of Holt; grandparents, Eugene and Donna Duling of Holt; brothers, Bill Duling of Lansing and Tom (Andrea) Duling of Mason; sister, Tammy (Bill) Sullivan of Lansing and Angie (Mike) Yankowski of Mason; special aunts and uncles, Steve & Peg Jenkins, Mark & Debbie Stahl, Larry & JoAnn Carpp, and Arnold & Beth Whitaker; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 4, at 11:00 a.m. from the Holt United Methodist Church, corner of Holt Rd. and Aureilus Rd. Burial will follow in the Maple Ridge Cemetery in Holt. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For those desiring memorial gifts may be made to the Trust Fund for Zach at the Dart National Bank in Holt in memory of Phillip J. Duling.

Thelma B. Duncan

Thelma Berendena Duncan, 83, of Bellevue, died Jan. 4, 2003 at the Laurels of Bedford.

Mrs. Duncan was born Nov. 15, 1919 in Lansing, the daughter of Berend and Eltha (Quenby) Wormmeester. She worked as a secretary for the Bellevue Insurance Agency and also in the kitchen at the Bellevue Drive-In. She married Roland Duncan on Dec. 28, 1946; he died in 1993. Mrs. Duncan was a past master of the American Business Women’s Association, past president of the PTA, a Campfire Girl leader and a member of the Bellevue Baptist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Surviving are her daughters, Dena (Max) Troutner and Mary Lynn (Lloyd) Miller, both of Bellevue; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and brother, Jason Wormmeester of Fine Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland; and a brother, Orville Wormmeester.

Funeral services were held Jan. 8 at Bellevue Baptist Church, with Pastor Robert Homan officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bellevue Memorial Scholarship Fund. Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.

Chrystal A. Eaton

Chrystal Ann Eaton, 15, of Charlotte, died March 10, 2003.

Miss Eaton was born May 1, 1987 in Lansing. Chrystal was a Charlotte High School sophomore who participated in several sports, including senior high school softball, junior high school volleyball, and set records in track and field events in elementary through high school. She was on the honor roll, a member of the Naval Sea Cadets and a volunteer for the Courthouse Square Association. Chrystal loved music, played the guitar, sang and danced and was a student of karate, earning a purple belt.

She is survived by her mother, Christine; grandparents, Arlo and Fran Eaton of Charlotte; uncles, Jim (Sharyn) Eaton of Duck Lake, Jack Eaton of Traverse City, and Tom Eaton of Florida; great-grandparents, Helen and Roy Grill of Lansing; and many aunts, uncles and cousins in the Grill, Leek, Nickerson, Hetchler, Eaton, Hubbel and Gunn families.

Funeral services were held March 13 at the First Congregational Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling officiating. Interment was at Perry Cemetery in Brookfield Township.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Courthouse Square Association. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Donald E. Eggleston

Donald E. Eggleston, age 71, of Charlotte, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003 at Eaton County Medical Care Facility after a short illness.

Don was born Feb. 25, 1932 in Lansing, the son of Edward and Saide Florence (Cowles) Eggleston and had been a Charlotte resident for seven years, coming from Holt. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, was a truck driver for Anchor Motor Freight, retiring in 1994 after 23 years of service, and was a member of Teamsters Union Local in Lansing.

Surviving are three daughters, Cheryl Hill and Janet Eggleston, both of Lansing, and Cathy (Bruce) Buck of Jackson; loving companion, Marjorie Heisler of Charlotte; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Garry Eggleston of Lansing, Robert (Deanne) Eggleston of Mission, Texas, and Lawrence (Nancy) Eggleston of Charlotte; and two sisters, Helen Kay Wells of Charlotte and Margie Jean (Richard) Kraun of Juneau, Wis.

He was preceded in death by four children.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services were held Dec. 20 at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Chapel in Lansing.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Gilbert C. Eldred

Gilbert “Gib” C. Eldred, 79, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003 in Marshall.

Mr. Eldred was born Feb. 22, 1923 in Napoleon, the son of Carlton Fred and Helen Bassett (Rummel) Eldred. He was a life-long dairy farmer in Brookfield Township and a member of Brookfield United Methodist Church and Brookfield Masonic Lodge #439 F & AM. He was also a member of the Eaton County Farm Bureau, Michigan Milk Producers Association and the National Farmers Organization. Mr. Eldred enjoyed attending auctions, golfing, fishing, boating, traveling and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Donna (Rusch); three daughters, Elaine (Jerry) Brown of Tawas City, Lynnette (Randall) Van Dyke and Myrna (Bradley Vahs) Wolter, both of Olivet; son, William “Bill” (Debra) Eldred of California; seven grandchildren, Damon, Leslie, Marcee and Aaron Brown, Sada and Derek Van Dyke, and Trevor Eldred; brother, LaVern (Lucille) Eldred of Leslie; four sisters-in-law, Lorna (Larry “Ernie”) Tripp of Mason, Virginia Weller of Kalamazoo, Madelyn (Nolan) Owen of Lansing, Joan (Kenneth) Matthews of Leslie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Shelly-Odell Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids, with Pastor Kevin Hale of Brookfield United Methodist Church officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Leslie.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Gene Therapy Research at the University of Michigan.

Martha E. Elliott

Martha E. Elliott, age 83 died Sunday, May 25, 2003. She was born February 22, 1920 in Aurelius Township. Mrs. Elliott lived most of her life on the farm. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Elliott, in 1998.

Surviving are her daughter, Helen I. (Richard) Bishop and grandson, Robert (Denise) Bishop, both of Eaton Rapids; and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, May 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Ball-Dunn Chapel, 621 S. Jefferson St., Mason, with Rev. Arthur Salisbury (Ret.), and Rev. Russell Marklund, Waverly Church of the Nazarene, officiating. Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason. Those desiring may make contributions to Alzheimer’s Association, Michigan Great Lakes Chapter, 107 Aprill Dr., Suite 1, Ann Arbor, MI 48103-1903, in memory of Mrs. Martha E. Elliott.

Aletha C. Ells

Aletha Clarica Ells, 95, of Charlotte, died April 21, 2003.

Mrs. Ells was born Jan. 22, 1908 in Eaton County, the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Garn) Root. She was a member of Charlotte Rebekah Lodge #68.

She is survived by children, Maynard “Mickey” (Joyce) Ells of Lake Odessa, Marilyn (Carroll) Briggs, Edward “Ted” (Rosalie) Ells, and Don (Kathy) Ells, all of Charlotte; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Mary Cooper of Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by daughter Elaine Ells, son Willard Ells, husband William B. Ells, granddaughter Karen Elaine Ells, sisters Goldie Wright and Thelma Ash, and brother Carson Root.

Funeral services were held April 24, 2003 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Kendall Lewis officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church or Hayes Green Beach Hospital. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.

Maynard Ells

Maynard “Mickey” Ells, 73, of Lake Odessa, died Aug. 19, 2003 as a result of an automobile accident.

Mr. Ells was born Sept. 19, 1929 in Charlotte, the son of William and Aletha (Root) Ells. He was the store manager of Felpausch Food Center in Eaton Rapids for many years. Mickey was an avid bowler and a “semi-professional golfer.” He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughter, Jan White of Holt; three sons, Gary Ells of Grand Rapids, Steve (Laura Jo) Ells of Commerce Township and Kevin Ells of West Bloomfield; eight grandchildren; sister, Marilyn (Carroll) Briggs of Charlotte; two brothers, Edward “Ted” (Rosalie) Ells, Don (Kathy) Ells, both of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Ells in 1971; brother, Bill Ells in 1978; and sister, Elaine Ells in 1928.

A memorial service was held Aug. 22 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Kendall Lewis officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice; envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
