Julia Fetchkowsky

Julia Fetchkowsky, 88 of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility. Ms. Fetchkowsky was born Oct. 18, 1915 in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ignatz and Mary (Koadotze) Matwyuk.

She worked for an office cleaning service.

She is survived by sister Mary Smith of Kentucky and brothers Steve Matwyuk of Georgia and Frank Matwyuk of South Branch.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Oct. 25 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Fr. Denis R. Spitzley officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.

Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Fay H. Fisher

Mr. Fay H. Fisher, age 93, of Nashville, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Thornapple Manor in Hastings.

Mr. Fisher was born Oct. 22, 1910 in Barry County, the son of Lester and Nellie Fisher. He was self-employed and an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time at his cabin in the Upper Peninsula, which he loved dearly.

He is survived by his children, Gene and Mary Fisher of Vermontville, Rex and Barb of Nashville, and Vinita and Hugh Snow of Nashville; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; his second wife, Doris; a brother, Donald; and two great-grandsons, Scott and Jesse Snow.

Funeral services were held Nov. 30 at Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery in Nashville.

Alonzo Flores, Jr.

Alonzo Flores, Jr., age 48, of Eaton Rapids, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003 in Eaton Rapids. Alonzo was born January 9, 1955 in Weslaco, TX. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1976, retired from Oldsmobile in 2001 and was a member of UAW Local 652.

Alonzo was preceded in death by his father, Alonzo, and is survived by 1 son, Jaime Alonzo Flores of Lansing; mother, Maria Flores of Eaton Rapids; beloved fiancée, Dawn Robbins of Eaton Rapids; brother, David Flores of Lansing; sisters, Esther Flores of Olivet, Kris Flores of Lansing; 3 nephews, Jesse Halmich, Aaron Holmes and Levon Flores.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Fr. Fred Thelen from Cristo Rey Parish Church officiating. Those desiring may make contributions to the National Kidney Association in memory of Alonzo Flores, Jr.

Marvin F. Flower

Marvin F. Flower passed away July 17, 2003 after a short illness.

Marvin was born in Kalamazoo on April 1, 1920, the son of Altha and Delos Flower. He was a 1938 graduate of Delton-Kellogg High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from Western Michigan University and earned a master’s degree from Michigan State University. Mr. Flower served as a U.S. Army officer in the North African and European Theatres in World War II and was discharged as a captain from the 351st Searchlight Battalion. He taught industrial arts at Charlotte High School for 33 years.

He was active in the Boy Scouts and a life member of the American Legion. Marvin was a founding member of the Eaton County Educational Credit Union, serving as its president for many years. An active member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, he was especially proud of his role in establishing the church’s Educational Unit. He enjoyed his summers and retirement years on the family farm in Barry County, where he indulged his loves of gardening, and especially working on outdoor projects with his brother-in-law, Richard Hoogenboom. Marvin and his wife Vivian traveled extensively and wintered in recent years in Brownsville, Texas.

Marv was devoted to his family, friends and former students.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Hoogenboom; and a daughter-in-law, Caterina Flower.

He is survived by Vivian, his wife of 57 years; sons, Douglas, Raymond (Joy) and Frederick (Lisa); and grandchildren, Emily, Kristin and Stefano.

Funeral services were held July 21 at Faith United Methodist Church in Delton. Interment was at Prairieville Cemetery. Arrangements were by Williams-Gores Funeral Home.

Casey Lin Foote

Casey Lin Foote, age 12, born August 26, 1991, passed into the loving arms of Christ Jesus, her Lord and Savior, at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003. Against all odds, Casey fought a valiant, courageous fight against brain and bone cancer for over two years. Brightly colored butterflies, rainbows, flowers and her animals adorn her artwork and represent a beautiful, loving child who joins her sisters, grandfather, and great-grandmothers in heaven.

She is survived by her parents, Nathan and Peggy Foote, and her brother, A.J. of Grand Ledge; her grandparents, Kathie Foot of Eaton Rapids and Joan (David) Whitcomb of Lansing; aunt, Gayle Betz; and uncle, Ed Foote of Eaton Rapids; aunts, Linda (Dave) Cheplick of Falls Church, VA, and Kimberly (Dean) Dodge of Lansing and several cousins. The family is grateful for community support given, our Oneida Gospel Church family, good friends, and God’s grace.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 25th at 1:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church in Eaton Rapids with burial following at Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alan Laing, Ed Foote, Alex Brooks and Ross Baker. The family is being served by The Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Contributions may still be made to Casey’s family for the purpose of meeting accumulated medical cost obligations. Checks can be made payable to the Casey Lin Foot Medical Fund, or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation if so desired, envelopes are available at the funeral home.

Kathleen L. Franks

Kathleen L. Franks, 59, of Bellevue, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003 at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Mrs. Franks was born May 25, 1943 in Hastings. She was raised in the Middleville area, and attended Middleville schools, graduating in 1961 from Thornapple-Kellogg High School. She went on to attend Davenport College in Grand Rapids, where she received a secretarial associate’s degree. She was married to Virgil Franks on March 17, 1971. Mrs. Franks was employed at the former Orchard Industries in Hastings and spent 10 years as a secretary for Flex-Fab Corp. in Hastings. In her younger years, she participated in 4-H, and choir and band in high school. She enjoyed music and playing the piano, dancing, ceramics, sewing, cooking and gardening.

She is survived by her husband, Virgil; son, Andrew Franks (and his companion Beth Balcom) of Bellevue; brother, Richard (Jean) Stager of Middleville; sisters, Patricia Portious of California, Ann (Frank) Bolton of Hastings and Jean (John) Dusseau of Kentucky; and nieces and nephews. Services were held Jan. 29 at Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville, with Pastor Glenn Branham officiating. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Kalamo. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Geraldine Fredenburg

Geraldine “Jerre” Fredenburg, of Charlotte, passed away, Feb. 16, 2003.

Mrs. Fredenburg was born Geraldine Jane Fulton on Aug. 29, 1923 to Clyde and Bess Whitcomb Fulton in Charlotte. She graduated from Charlotte High School with the class of 1941, attended Oberlin College and graduated from Michigan State in 1945 where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She taught music in both Charlotte and Portland public schools and played the organ at First Congregational Church for over 20 years. She was a part-owner of Fulton Lumber Co., retiring after 38 years. Mrs. Fredenburg was an active participant in the Charlotte community as a member of First Congregational Church since 1935, the Blanche Moyer Circle, city council member and enthusiastic participant in the development of the recycling center. Her love for people of all ages was demonstrated as she served Explorer Troop 45 with Dennis Kloko as advisor, volunteered in the Eaton Intermediate School adult program and supported the House of Ruth. Mrs. Fredenburg was active in the Hayes Green Beach Hospital Auxiliary, gift shop, and was a member of the HGB President’s Club. She also served on the United Way Board and was a charter member of the board of directors of Courthouse Square Association. She leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service to her family, church and community – a friend to everyone.

She is survived by her brother, Bob and his wife Evelo; daughter, Connie and her husband Robert Miller; granddaughters, Sarah Collick, Jennifer (Duane) Huff, their children and Sandy (EJ) Dymowski, their children; son, Wesley and his wife Joan Fredenburg; granddaughters, Kate and Hilary; nieces, Christi (Tom) Dutcher, Barbara (Richard) Butman and Kathie (Charles) Cook; and nephew, Mike (Janice) Fulton and their families.

Services were held Feb. 19 at First Congregational Church UCC in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling and Rev. Z. Wm. Colson, minister emeritus, officiating.

Memorial gifts in Mrs. Fredenburg’s honor may be made to First Congregational Church, Hayes Green Beach Memorial Hospital or The House of Ruth, all in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Laura A.M. French

Laura Augusta Mae French, 98, of Bellevue, died Dec. 27, 2003 at Eaton Manor in Charlotte.

She was born Feb. 16, 1905 in Mecosta County to Clarence and Pearl (Rathburn) Black. She owned her own business doing wallpapering and banking and decorating specialty cakes. Laura married Clair French on Feb. 17, 1923 in Battle Creek; he died in April 1984. She was a member of Heritage Hills Bible Church since 1944, and enjoyed crocheting, making afghans and gardening.

She is survived by daughters, Carol (Edward) Whiting of Battle Creek and Arlene (Ken) Thompson of Orange Park, Fla.; sons, Gaylen (Melba) French of Charlotte, Keith (Barb) French of Springport and Clair (Bertha) French Jr. of Pierson; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Mahlon Black of Battle Creek.

She was preceded in death by daughter Bonnie Wood in 2002.

Services were held Dec. 31 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Pastor Jeff Homan officiating. Interment was a Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Hills Bible Church.
