David P. Friddle

David Paul Friddle, age 52, of Nashville, died Wednesday, May 7, 2003 at his home.

Mr. Friddle was born Dec. 9, 1950 in Hastings, the son of Paul and Jeanette (White) Friddle. He was raised in Maple Grove Township, Barry County, and attended Maple Valley Schools, graduating in 1969 from Maple Valley High School. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 3, 1970 until his honorable discharge Feb. 2, 1976. Mr. Friddle received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Army Commendation Medal and two Purple Hearts. He was married to Linda Lenneman on June 30, 1979. Mr. Friddle was employed by General Motors Corp. in Lansing for 30 years, retiring in 1999, and was also engaged in farming for many years. He lived at his present farm home in Nashville since 1973. He attended Mount Hope Assembly of God in Lansing, was an avid collector of Studebaker classic automobiles and Studebaker memorabilia, a long-time member of the Studebaker Drivers Car Club, and a collector of Minneapolis Moline Tractors. He was the recipient of the General Motors Service Award, a church bus driver for 11 years and especially enjoyed helping with children’s programs at church. He was well-known for his personal outreach to help neighbors, and was a member of the Purple Heart Association.

Mr. Friddle is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Tammy Friddle of Battle Creek; granddaughter, Taryn Hollins of Battle Creek; grandson, Austin Neudeck of Hickory Corners; step-sons, Fred Meyers and Eric Meyers, both of Portland; mother, Jeanette Friddle of Nashville; brothers, Steve (Shanna) Friddle of Spokane, Wash., Mitchell Friddle and Martin Friddle, both of Nashville, Paul Lee (Rita) Friddle of Hastings, and Gary (Sherry) Friddle of Woodland; sister, Martha (Jerry) Larson of Missoulia, Mont.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his father, Paul Friddle and a nephew, Jason Friddle.

Services were held May 10 at Grace Community Church in Nashville, with Pastors Darrel McKeel, John Patterson and Rob VanEngen officiating. Interment was at Wilcox Cemetery, with full military honors.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barry-Eaton Hospice, Barry County Christian School, or Gilead Healing Center – Mount Hope Assembly of God in Lansing. Arrangements were by Wren Funeral Home on Hastings.

Paul E. Friddle

Paul E. Friddle, 76, of Nashville, died Friday, March 7, 2003 at his residence.

Mr. Friddle was born June 14, 1926 in Detroit, the son of Lawrence and Louanna (Bell) Friddle. He moved to the Nashville area as a child and attended the Moore Country School, graduating in 1947 from Hastings High School following his military service, and went on to attend Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. Mr. Friddle served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 17, 1944 until Aug. 9, 1946. He married Jeanette White on Oct. 11, 1947. His employment included Eaton Manufacturing Co. in Battle Creek, barn painting in Barry County for several years, and in 1966 he went to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Nashville, from where he retired. Mr. Friddle served as a Guard for nine years and was recently honored by Ft. Custer for outstanding service and devotion. He enjoyed woodworking, raising peonies, many of which found their way to area nursing hoes and the homes of his many friends. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed motorcycles and attended Nashville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanette; sons, Steven (Shanna) of Spokane, Wash., David (Linda), Mitchell and Martin, all of Nashville, Paul (Rita) and Gary (Cherrie), both of Hastings; daughter, Martha (Jerry) Larson of Missoula, Mont.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and brother, Merrill of Sturgis.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and a grandson, Jason Friddle.

Respecting Mr. Friddle’s wishes, private family services were held.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barry Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville.

Leo H. Fulton

Leo H. Fulton, 88, of Dimondale, died Thursday morning, March 6, 2003 at the home of his son in Harrison.

Mr. Fulton was born Nov. 13, 1914 in Eaton Rapids, a son of Ray and Cecelia (Wing) Fulton. He was a former farmer and builder, and retired from Mejier. Mr. Fulton was a member of the Dimondale United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ernest, George and Albert Fulton; and his sister, Ernestine Danielson.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Ruth; son, James of Harrison; two grandchildren, Tracy (James) Reeves of Laingsburg and Troy Fulton of DeWitt; four great-grandchildren, Riley Reeves, Sarah, Jacob and Jordan Fulton; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 9 at the Dimondale United Methodist Church. Arrangements were by Field & Leik Funeral Home in Dimondale.

Sheila Ann Galvin

Sheila Ann Galvin, age 49, of Eaton Rapids, died Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at a Lansing Hospital. She was born August 29, 1954 in Eaton Rapids, the daughter of Richard and Phyllis (Squires) Strang. Sheila was a member of the Robbins United Methodist Church in Eaton Rapids. She loved her friends at church and also enjoyed working with horses.

Surviving are her husband of 28 years, Michael; son, Sam and daughter, Shawntell, all of Eaton Rapids; sister, Peggy (Craig) Cartwright of Eaton Rapids; 2 brothers, Jeff Strang of Duck Lake and Mike (Diane) Strang of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday, September 5th at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. Burial will follow in the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Keith Garity

Keith Alan Garity, 60, of Thompsonville, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003 at The Maples – Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Franfort. He was born April 23, 1943 in Charlotte, the son of Carl and Viva (Holcomb) Garity.

Keith grew up in southern Mcihigan, and in 1981 moved to Cleveland, Ga., where he resided until moving to Thompsonville in 2003. Keith was a self-employed carpenter throughout his life and loved [wood] working. He also loved hunting and fishing.

On Nov. 2, 1960 in Olivet, Keith married Dorothea “Dodie” Lee Parker, who survives him. He is also survived by four children, Carmen (Jim) Simmons of Benzonia, Deanna Frye of Cleveland, GA, Steve Garity of Thompsonville, and Christine Garity of Cumming, GA; 10 grandchildren, Kevin and Katie McKeever, Zeke, Sarah, and Seth Frye, Derik, Ryan, Jessica, Jennifer and James Garity; one brother, Dave (Kay) Garity of Bellevue, one sister, Barbara (Warren) Parker of Venice, Fla., his father-in-law, and mother-in-law, Lloyd and Lillian Parker, his best friend, Bill (Bonnie) Partrigde of Olivet, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, brothers in law, sisters in law and aunts and uncles.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 13 at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Rev. Marilou J. Schlotterbeck and Rev. Harold Comer officiating. Interment was in Thompsonville Cemetery.

Charles M. Garvey

Charles M. Garvey, 88, of Hastings, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003. Mr. Garvey was born July 19, 1915, in Charlotte, the son of Bernard and Ethel (Parish) Garvey.

He enjoyed gardening, decorating his home and his dogs. He served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by sister Arlene King of Hastings and two nephews; Ronald (Carol) Snyder of Delton and Charles (Joni) Snyder of West Branch. Private graveside services to be held at a later date.

Arrangements by Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte.

Doris E. Garvie

Doris Elaine Garvie, 76, of Bellevue, died Friday, May 2, 2003 at Sparrow Hospital.

Doris was born Sept. 18, 1926 in Charlotte, the daughter of Gerald and Leona Casler. She had been a Bellevue resident since 1965, and was employed by Wilcox-Gay and then Owens Illinois until her retirement. Doris enjoyed gardening, mushroom hunting, crocheting, playing bingo and her two Dobermans.

She is survived by her children, Dale (Carol) Garvie of Charlotte, Cheri Cain of Olivet, Lynn (Carolyn) Garvie of Charlotte and Scott Garvie of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence (Jim) Garvie in December 2002.

No funeral services were held. Interment was at Fort Custer Memorial Cemetery.

Edith L. Gates

Edith L. Gates, 97, formerly of Grand Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 in Charlotte.

Miss Gates was born July 24, 1906 in Kent County, the daughter of Silas and Ottilie (Fechtenau) Gates. She was a member of Forest Hills Bible Chapel in Grand Rapids and served her lord and savior Jesus Christ for many years with Children’s Bible Clubs and at Jack and Jill Camp.

She is survived by her sister, Rena Gates of Grand Rapids, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Lillie Conklin in 1999.

Graveside services were held Nov. 15 at Fair Plains Cemetery in Grand Rapids, with Pastor Rick Larman officiating.

Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
