Gayland Good
Gayland Dean “Butch” Good, 56, died Aug. 11, 2003 in Marshall Hospital.
Gayland was born Jan. 29, 1947, the son of Gale and Inez (Breidinger) Good. He grew up in Gresham and graduated from Charlotte, then enlisting with the Marine Corps.
He is survived by tow sons, Robert and Dean; three daughters, Diane, Angel and Nicole; grandchildren; two sisters and three brothers.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and two brothers.
Graveside services were held at Fort Custer Cemetery in Augusta, near Battle Creek.
Inez Good
Mrs. Inez Larena (Breidinger) Good, 91, of “Lacy Lake” Bellevue, died Wednesday, June 18, 2003. Mrs. Good was born June 24, 1911 the daughter of Dean Breidinger and Anna (Kirkey) Breidinger.
Mrs. Good was the owner of the Gresham Store from 1958-72 and she loved traveling. She was e member of the Charlotte VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a former member of Nashville Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughters, Evelyn (Harry) Carpenter of Charlotte, Lydia (James) Baker of Minneapolis, Minn., sons, Gayland Good of Marshall, Edward Lee (Linda) Good of Holt, Loren (Wilma) Evans of Muncie, IN., Ivan R. (Betty Lou) Good of Lansing, 34 grandchidlren, 65 great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gale Good in 2001, son Clifton Wayne Good and Ardnold Good.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 20 at Pray Funeral Home, with Charles Jenson officiating. Interment was at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.
Carl S. Gordon
Carl S. Gordon, 83, of Charlotte, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003 after a short illness.
Carl was born Sept. 19, 1919 in Sunfield Township, the son of Charles and Libbie (Chatfield ) Gordon. He was a 1938 graduate of Charlotte High School and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Gordon was a retired Carter’s Food Stores manager with 30 years of service, and had previously worked for Kroger for 15 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, Charlotte Lodge #120 F. & A.M., and the Shrine. He was a former member of the American Legion, VFW and Charlotte Rotary Club, and a former president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving are his wife, Leone (Haddix) Gordon; two daughters, Linda (Jack) Raymond of Kalamazoo and Debra (David) Townsend of Plainwell; two stepsons, John (Shirley) Cove of Bakersfield, Calif. And Douglas (Cyndy) Cove of Holt; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Stanke of Flint.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janette (Matson) Gordon in 1965.
Memorial services were held Aug. 12 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Patricia Stirling officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hayes Green Beach Hospital or the First Congregational Church.
Louise Gracey
Louise Gracey, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Del Ray Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003.
Mrs. Gracey was born Jan. 30, 1916 in Pittsfield, Ill., the daughter of William and Laura (Surratte) Drummond.
She is survived by nephews, Bruce (Joyce) Fillmore of Charlotte, James Boyer of Royal Oak; nieces, Carolyn Fillmore Wilson of South Lyons, Susan Fillmore of Columbia, Md.; and second cousins, William George and John George, both of Arizona.
Louise was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Graham Gracey in 1981.
Graveside service[s] were held Oct. 30 at Maple Grove Cemetery in Mason, with Rev. Fr. Denis Spitzley officiating.
Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte. .
Ila L. Gray
Ila L. (Jarrard) Gray, 91, a life-long resident of Maple Grove Township, passed away Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 a her daughter’s residence.
Mrs. Gray was born April 10, 1911, the daughter of the late Lowell and Ethel (Hecker) Jarrard. She married Robert Gray on March 9, 1935 in Battle Creek. Mrs. Gray was a member of the Maple Grove Ladies Birthday Club, Farm Bureau, Norton Rural School Board and active in PTA events. Her hobbies included farming, crochet and needle point, and she also enjoyed flowers.
She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Gay of Richland and Lois (Glen) Richardson of Byron Center; one son, Norman (Sue) Gray of Sunfield; one brother, Lawrence (Mary) Jarrard of Nashville; three sisters, Ena Johnson of Hastings, L.T. (Robert) Weeks of Freeport and Jesse “Joni” Burkett of Eaton Rapids; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one soon-to-be great-grandchild; and one sister-in-law, Pauline Gray of Charlotte.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Robert Gray in 1966; two brothers, Clayton Jarrard and Casey Jarrard; and three sisters, Thelma Cunningham, Therma Eddy and Iza Decker.
Funeral services were held Jan. 6 at Maple Valley Chapel in Nashville, Interment followed at Wilcox Cemetery in Maple Grove Township.

Donald M. Green
Donald M. Green, 73, of Dimondale, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 3, 2003 at his home following a long illness.
Mr. Green was born Dec. 28, 1929 in Vermontville, a son of Phillip and Gladys (Fox) Green. He was a 20-year Navy submariner and a cook at various restaurants.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara; children, Gary (Linda) Green of Racine, Wis., and Betsy (Frank) Busby of Marinette, Wis.; stepchildren, Linda (Martin) Kubiak of Springport, Ralph (Kim) Piepkow of Brooklyn, Trina (Kevin) McGaffigan of Duck Lake, and Gavin (Sherry) Piepkow of Jackson; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Belva Green of Tarpon Springs, Fla. Services were held Dec. 6 at Field & Leik Funeral Home in Dimondale, with Rev. Dr. Margaret Zee Jones, chaplain of Ingham Visiting Nurse & Hospice, officiating. Military honors were provided by the Navy Reserve. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Vermontville.
Dr. Fred M. Gruen
Dr. Fred M. Gruen, age 88, of Olivet, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003 at his residence.
Dr. Gruen was born Feb. 4, 1915 in Fuerth, Germany, the son of Adolfe and Mety Gruenspecht and had been an Olivet resident since 1951. He was a professor emeritus at Olivet College, where he had served as professor of chemistry, retiring in 1992 after 41 years of teaching. He studied for his bachelor of science at University of Di Pavia, Italy and City College of New York, received his master’s degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in East Lansing. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Olivet Lions Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn (Ronald) Cortesi of Des Plaines, Ill. And Carol (James Cash) Gruen of East Lansing; and four grandchildren, Lauren and Nicholas Cortesi, and Rachel and Marissa Cash.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Gruen on April 24, 2003.
Funearl services were held Nov. 21 at Olivet Congregational Church on the Olivet College campus, with Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Interment was at Olivet Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Olivet College for the “Dr. Fred M. Gruen Endowed Professorship.” Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Marianne Gruen
Marianne (Marian) Gruen, age 85, of Olivet, died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at her residence.
Mrs. Gruen was born Sept. 18, 1917 in Frankfort, Germany, the daughter of Siegfried and Emilie (Neumond) Schoenfeld and had been an Olivet resident since 1951. She began her formal education at Hunter College in New York and completed her bachelor of arts degree at Olivet College. She taught for one year for the elementary school in Springport, and later served as a substitute teacher in Olivet schools, where she also served as a playground supervisor. Mrs. Gruen was a member of the Olivet College Women’s Board and the Women’s Fellowship of the Olivet Congregational Church.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Fred Gruen; daughters, Evelyn (Ronald) Cortesi of Des Plaines, Ill., and Carol (James Cash) Gruen of East Lansing; and grandchildren, Lauren and Nicholas Cortesi, and Rachel and Marissa Cash.
Funeral services were held April 27 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte. Interment was at Olivet Cemetery.
