Ardith G. Harmon
Ardith G. Harmon, 87, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 at Sparrow Dimondale Center.
Mrs. Harmon was born Oct. 12, 1915 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Earl and Alice (Wilmont) Fry and was a long-time Charlotte resident. She was a 1934 graduate of Charlotte High School and graduated from Western Michigan University in 1939. She was a member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte and the Charlotte Business Women’s Guild. Mrs. Harmon was a retired employee of Michigan Bank Card in Lansing and prior to that had been employed by the former Newberry’s Dime Store and McNamara’s Drug Store, both in Charlotte.
Surviving are one son, Jon (Sally) Harmon of Charlotte; grandson, Ryan Harmon of Ann Arbor; and granddaughter, Katie Harmon of Ludington.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Harmon in 1955 and son David Harmon on March 18, 2001.
Funeral services were held Jan. 29 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte, with Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Earl Harmon
Earl Wayne Harmon died Monday, June 16, 2003, in Charlotte at the age of 92. Mr. Harmon was born Jan. 13, 1911, and was the last surviving child of William C. and Rosella (Van-Houten) Harmon.
Earl was born in Eaton County where he resided most of his life along with his parents and siblings. He was a farmer in the Vermontville area for many years, probably one of the last area farmers to thrash grain and farm with horses at the tie of his retirement from farming. The Harmon’s were owners and operators of the “Hill Top Riding Stable” from 1969-87, located on Kelly Hwy, Vermontville. You always knew Earl from the cowboy hat that he always wore during his wakened hours. His large extended family, love of singing and whistling, along with horses, were a big part of his life, work and interest over the years.
He is survived by sons Theo (Judy) Harmon of Vermontville, Clinton (Rosie) Harmon of Eaton Rapids, Wayne (Fran) Childs of San Diego, CA; daughters Maxine (Joe) Coan of Howell, N.J., Alice (Paul) Edwards of Grand Ledge; (including step) 26 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren, sisters-in-law; Leona Harmon of Bellevue, Lillian Harmon of Bellaire, Violet Henry of Traverse City and Doris Rogers of Eaton Rapids, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death in 1973 by his wife Mabel A. Rogers-Childs-Harmon.
Services for Mr. Harmon were June 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment was in Freemire Cemetery in Sunfield Township.

Raymond L. Harper
Raymond Lindle Harper, 79, of Charlotte, passed away June 6, 2003.
He was born in Benton, Ky. on Oct. 28, 1923, the son of Effie Jane and George Lindle Harper. He was raised in Gleason, Tenn., and was the third child of 10, with six brothers – Paul, James, L.C., Billy, George Jr. and William, and three sisters – Elawease, Faye and Shirley. He served in World War II, in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 on the USS Amick DE 168 ship. Raymond was recognized for his justice sensitivity, forgiveness and love, and was known as a good and giving person.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katie Jean (Summers) Harper; his parents; and two brothers, James and Paul Harper.
He is survived by his loving wife, Bonita “Bonnie” and four children, Brenda Siefert, Ray Harper, Mary Harper, Geraldine “Geri” (Dan) Ziolkowski; three stepchildren, Gary (Patti) Wright, Brenda (Mark) Friar, Teresa (Robert) Lea; 19 grandchildren, Del Wright Jr., Deanna (Rick) Torres, Aaron Wright, Justin, Jared, Jami and Jenna Harper, Tiffany and Jason Ziolkwoski, Audrey Harper, Randi (Kevin) Fetterman, Heather (Josh) Coston, Jessica and Andrea Wright, Tiffany and Kimberly Friar, Robby, Christopher and Jason Lea; 12 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Erica and Rick Torres, Jordan Wright, Konner and Kollin Fetterman, Courtney Moore, Samantha and Joshie Coston, Haley and Paige Lea, and Karmen Villegas.
Funeral service[s] were held June 10 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte with burial at Mount Hope Cemetery in Lansing. Casket-bearers were Dan Ziolkowski, Gem Harper, Gary Harper, Rick Torres, Aaron Wright and Jason Lea.
David F. Harrington
David F. Harrington, 66, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Battle Creek, Climax and Kalamazoo, died of cancer at his Orlando home.
Mr. Harrington was a graduate of Climax High School and Western Michigan University and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a retired executive of Advanced Packaging in Jackson and was known as a loving and supportive father.
He is survived by his mother, Louise Harrington of Greenville, S.C.; children, Stephanie Harrington, Kevin Harrington, Blake Harrington and Colin Harrington of Orlando, John Harrington of Dunedin, Fla. and Jesse Harrington of Ann Arbor; six grandchildren; and siblings, Sam Harrington of Big Canoe, Ga., Priscilla Reynolds of Greenville, S.C. and Eric Harrington of East Lansing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Harrington.
Services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 14 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bellevue, with Rev. Fr. Lawrence Delaney of St. Francis Catholic Church in DeWitt officiating. Interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.
Arrangements were by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
Elson V. Harrington Jr.
Elson V. “Joe” Harrington Jr., 59, of Olivet, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Harrington was born May 25, 1943 in Battle Creek, the son of Elson and Doris (Reid) Harrington Sr., and lived most of his life in Olivet, except several years when he lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minn. He was a 1961 graduate of Olivet High School, where he was in the school band and served as a drum major for four years. Mr. Harrington had been employed in research and development for Eaton Mfg. Co. in Marshall and Minneapolis for 30 years, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Michigan Army National Guard, from where he retired with the rank of first lieutenant. He held a black belt and was an instructor in tae kwon do.
Surviving are his daughter, Lisa Diane (Douglas) Fox of Olivet; two grandsons, Mathew and Mark Fox; his mother, Doris Harrington of Olivet; and sister, Sharon Powell of Olivet.
He was preceded in death by his father, Elson V. Harrington Sr. in 1987, and grandmother, Sylvia Norton in 1999.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services were held March 5 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Sam Bombara of Western Michigan Teen Challenge officiating.

Lyle “Mike” Harris
Lyle “Mike” Harris, age 88, of Eaton Rapids, passed away October 17, 2003 in Eaton Rapids, MI. Mr. Harris was a retired self-employed mechanic and former employee for McClure Farm Implement Co. He was a retired Springport Volunteer Fireman; lifetime resident of Brookfield Twp., where he lived his life on the family farm and enjoyed dancing, fishing and camping. Mr. Harris was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Eunice, brothers and sisters, and grandson, Todd.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Joan (Dan) Rogers of Rives Junction; Judy (Rex) Twichell of Springport; Janet (Peg) Mahan of Nashville; 1 son, Roger “Butch” (Barbara) Harris of Eaton Rapids; numerous grandchildren, great and great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
There will be no service held. The family will receive friends Thursday 7-9 p.m. at the Shelly Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. In lieu of flowers, contributions made to the Springport Fire Department or Eaton Rapids Community Hospital would be greatly appreciated. The family is being served by the Peters & Murray Funeral Home, Grand Ledge.
Margaret Harris
Margaret Harris, age 92, of Olivet, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003 at Eaton Community Hospice House in Charlotte.
Margaret was born Jan. 18, 1911 in Biggsville, Ill., the daughter of David and Anna (Tarbox) liggett. At the age of 5 she moved with her family to Michigan. She was a 1928 graduate of Olivet High School and attended Ainger Bible and Nashville Baptist churches. She was a 42-year member and a past noble grand of the Olivet Rebekah Lodge. Margaret’s hobbies included traveling, reading, fishing, gardening and writing letters to friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh in 1967; one son, Wayne in 2000; three brothers, Shirley of California, Roy of Illinois and Elmer of Battle Creek; four sisters, Blanche Cochran of Illinois, Josephine Robbins of Iowa, Edith Liggett and Hazel Winegar of Olivet.
She is survived by two daughters, Dorma Hisler of Narrow Lake and Myrna (Miles) Shrontz of Coral Springs, Fla.; and one son, Gaylord (Ardeth) Harris of Olivet; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, John (Lillian) Liggett of Olivet; sisters-in-law, Dora Harris of Olivet and Clotilda Liggett of California; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Oct. 31 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastors Deano Lamphere and Lester DeGroot officiating. Interment was at Bosworth Cemetery in Walton Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice House.
Charles G. Hartig
Charles Geoffrey “Jeff” Hartig, 59, of Charlotte, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, June 21, 2003.
Mr. Hartig was born Aug. 20, 1943 in Killeen, Texas, the son of Marshall and Eileen (Foster) Hartig. He was a meat cutter at Darrell’s Market in Mason for many years, known by many as the man behind the meat counter with the big smile. Mr. Hartig enjoyed drag racing and bowling. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 238, and a member of the Forty et Eight Chateau.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sharon (Brown) Hartig; children, Tammy Brown (Thomas Farr), Shannon Hartig, Matthew Hartig and Rachel Hartig, all of Charlotte; mother-in-law, Delores Brown; brothers, Jon (Dawn) Hartig, David Hartig and Michael (Kimberly) Hartig, all of Holt; sisters, Carol Barish of DeWitt, Cheryl (James) Ordway of Holt and Christine (Thomas) Graham of Dimondale; sister-in-law, Toni Hartig of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Eileen Hartig, and brother Joe Hartig.
Memorial services were held June 24 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Lynn Grimes officiating.
