Max R. Harvey
Max R. Harvey, 82, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003 in Sparrow Hospital, Lansing.
Mr. Harvey was born July 2, 1920 in Carmen, Okla., the son of Edward and Lena (Jarnagin) Harvey, and had been a Charlotte resident since 1953. He was a retired manufacturers representative and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Harvey held memberships in the First Congregational Church, Charlotte Lodge #120 F.&A.M., Charlotte Commandery #37 K.T., R.A.M. #82, Maple City Chapter #218 O.E.S., Charlotte Country Club, Charlotte Lions Club and Maple City Post #2406 V.F.W. He was also a former board member of Eaton Area Senior Center.
Surviving are his wife, Mary (Stevenson) Harvey; four children, Michael (Linda) Harvey of Wacousta, Cynthia (Tim) Francis, Susan (Dennis) Barnett and Richard (Nancy) Harvey, all of Charlotte; and nine grandchildren, Jennifer and Christopher Harvey, Lindsay and Scott Francis, Rheagan, Derek and Cassandra Barnett, and Rayanne and Kenneth Densmore.
Funeral services were held Feb. 5 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Chapel in Charlotte, with Rev. Tom Jones of First Congregational Church officiating. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Charlotte, the District Library or Eaton Area Senior Center.
Ruth N. Hatfield
Ruth N. (Bugbee) Hatfield, age 100, of Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Charlotte and Olivet, died March 30, 2003 in Dade County, Fla.
Mrs. Hatfield was born Aug. 17, 1902 in Charlotte, the daughter of William and Elsie (Vickery) Huber and spend most of her life in Eaton County. She graduated from Charlotte High School and Western Michigan College at Kalamazoo, with an associate’s degree in business. She earned a master of arts degree from Michigan State University. Ruth taught for 31 years in rural schools, mostly in Walton Township School in Olivet. She was an elementary principal for 12 years. She married Oren Bugbee in 1923 and lived on a farm in Walton Township; Oren passed away in 1965. Ruth married Frederick Hatfield in 1968; he survives. Ruth was a member of Bradford United Church of Christ in Zephyrhills, Fla. and had been a member of the First Congregational Church in Charlotte for over 75 years.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Henrietta Baldwin in 1993.
Memorial services were held April 4 at Bradford United Church of Christ in Zephyrhills, Fla. Additional memorial services will be held at 1 pm. Tuesday, June 3 at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Tom Jones of First Congregational Church officiating. Interment of cremains will be held at Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Maxine L. Hawkins
Maxine L. (Messimer) Hawkins, of Charlotte, passed away Aug. 12, 2003 at the age of 82.
Maxine was born Aug. 25, 1920 in Detroit, the daughter of Howard and Bernice (Miller) Messimer. She spent all her life in the Charlotte and Hastings areas, retiring from Owens-Illinios in 1985. She was a devoted Detroit Tigers fan and enjoyed good music, crocheting and playing cards.
Ms. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents; sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Lee Lane; niece, Linda Mathis; and nephew, Dale Lamie.
Surviving are four children, Roger (Yvonne) Wolfe of Bradenton, Fla., Sharri Phillips of Hastings, David (Brinda) Hawkins of Nashville, and Deborah Cogswell (Donald Stahl) of Rives Junction; six grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Memorial services were held Aug. 15 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rich Mitterling officiating.

Raymond Howard Hayden
Raymond H. Hayden, age 90, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, October 20, 2003 at the Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte. He was born March 16, 1913 in Windsor Township, the son of Claud and Ethel (Sweet) Hayden. Ray has been a long standing member of the Eaton Rapids Assembly of God. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marquirite in 1953 and a brother, Beyrl in 1932.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Lola; step-children, Paula Jean (Bud) Crutsinger of Temple, Texas and Tom (Janet) Taylor of Escanaba, MI; one brother, Carl Hayden of Potterville, 7 step grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are pending through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids.
Cecil J. Hayes
Cecil James Hayes, 84, of Charlotte, died Monday, May 12, 2003 in Lansing.
Mr. Hayes was born Sept. 15, 1918 in East Jordan, Michigan, the son of Frederick and Mary Ethel (Higby) Hayes. He worked in the lumber campus of the Upper Peninsula, at Wilcox-Gay, Earl Scott Roofing, Champion Prestige Modular Homes, and Charlotte Public Schools. He served with the Michigan State Troops during World War II. He loved hunting, fishing, being outdoors and traveling with family. Mr. Hayes was a member of Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and Center Eaton Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jerine (Bradley) Hayes who he married Sept. 21, 1941; sons, James (Ruth) Hayes of Ypsilanti, Brian (Charlene) Hayes and Daniel (Alice) Hayes, all of Charlotte; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Gertrude Hayes of Rapid River; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Elmer and Lawrence; sister, Pauline; and an infant sister. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 19 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Kendall Lewis officiating. Interment will be at Gresham Cemetery in Charlotte.
The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a memorial dialysis fund for Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
David L. Heilman
David L. Heilman, of Grand Rapids, died at home Friday, Oct. 10, 2003.
David was born June 3, 1971 in Charlotte. He graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in civil engineering in 1994, and worked for Earth Tech in Grand Rapids. David was active with the Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, going on mission trips to Albania and Okinawa, and holding Bible studies in his home. He also volunteering his time at Camp Beechpoint in Allegan and DeGage Ministries, a soup kitchen in Grand Rapids. His interests involved biking, camping, softball and snow skiing.
Surviving are his parents, Stephen and Paula (Wiley) Heilman of Charlotte; sister,Krista (Rob) Sheldon of Nashville, Mich.; grandparents, Paul and Mavis Stults of Weslaco, Texas, and Royal and Mildred Kirby of Ionia; aunts and uncles, Craig (Jean) Wiley of Georgia, Mark Wiley of Charlotte, Eileen (Troy) TenEych of Nashville, Mich.; RaeannVolkmann of Phelps, Wis., Sandra LaMont of Carson City, Mich., Valerie (Dan) Schmitz of Ionia, and Gail (Paris) Carpenter of Eaton Rapids; and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Nathan Wiley in March 1972 and Calvin Heilman in July 1993.
Funeral services were held Oct. 18 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Doug Smith of Calvary Church officiating. Interment was at West Carmel Cemetery in Charlotte.

Marilyn S. Heinze
Marilyn S. (Warner) (Patterson) Heinze, 75, of Charlotte, died Monday, June 23, 2003.
Mrs. Heinze was born Dec, 1, 1927 in Riverdale, the daughter of Harlow and Thyrza (Wiltshire) Parks.
She is survived by her husband, Ron Heinze of Potterville; two sons, Don (Janet) Warner of Plymouth and Tim (Nancy) Warner of Eaton Rapids; three daughters, Janet (Tim) Denton of Charlotte, Jane (Tom) Clegg of Charlotte and Candy (Gerry) Soldan of Grand Ledge; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four step-children.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Donald Warner, second husband Jay Patterson, and brothers Dean and Dale Parks.
Memorial service was held June 26 at Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Marshall H. Helser
Marshall H. Helser, age 86, of Charlotte, died Friday, May 2, 2003 at Sparrow Hospital Dimondale Center after an extended illness.
Marshall was born June 15, 1916 at Maybe in London Township, Monroe County, the son of Christian Jacob and Mabel (Kohne) Helser and had been a Charlotte resident since 1958. He was a self-employed realtor and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Helser was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of First Lutheran Church of Charlotte.
Surviving are his wife, Wanda (Schnurstein) Helser; son, Larry of Holt; two grandsons; and sister, Hallie Billmier of Monroe.
At Mr. Helser’s request, no visitation or services were held.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church Building Fund. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
