Raymond M. Hinckley
Raymond M. Hinckley, 75, of Nashville, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at Pennock Hospital in Hasting, from complications of a lengthy illness.
Mr. Hinckley was born April 16, 1928 in Nashville, the son of Merrill and Ona (Hummel) Hinckley, and graduated in 1946 from Nashville High School. He was employed at Oliver Corp. in Battle Creek until his induction in the U.S. Army in 1950. He served two years with the 46th Truck Transportation Corp., with one year in Germany. Raymond was married to Susan Murphy of Nashville on Oct. 22, 1955 at Zion Lutheran Church in Woodland. They moved to Battle Creek where he continued to work for Oliver Corp. until the plant closed in 1962. He was then employed at Battle Creek branches of the Home Loan Co. of Muskegon until he was hired in 1967 by Security National Bank of Battle Creek. In 1972 Mr. Hinckley was named manager of the bank’s Nashville branch and he and his wife moved back to his hometown. He continued to work for SNB after it was purchased by Comerica Bank of Detroit, serving in various branches in Battle Creek. He retired in 1986 as manager of Comerica’s Bellevue branch. Mr. Hinckley was president of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce during the 1970s and served several terms on the Nashville Village Council. He was village president from 1990 to 1993; and was a member of the Riverside Recreational Development Corp., a volunteer group responsible for creating the ballfields and other improvements on village property west of the business district. He enjoyed fishing, reading, TV sports, and visiting with his “coffee buddies” in Palacios, Texas, where the couple had wintered since 1990. Mr. Hinckley was also interested in history. He was a direct descendant of Samuel Hinckley, an English immigrant who settled immigrant who settled in Massachusetts in 1635.
Raymond is survived by his wife, Susan; sister, Petie Latta of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald; and sister-in-law, Wilma Hinckley. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam Library in Nashville or Barry County Humane Society in Hastings. Donald C. Hoag
Donald Clyde Hoag, 74, of Potterville, died Sunday, June 22, 2003 at his residence.
Mr. Hoag was born May 5, 1929 in East Lansing, the son of Robert and Bertha (Clark) Hoag. He retired from General Motors in 1987, where he worked in material control. Mr. Hoag was a Korean Conflict veteran with the U.S. Army, and a member of American Legion Post 0221 in Frankfort. He loved camping, fishing, gardening and his second home on Lake Michigan in Frankfort.
He is survived by sons, Donald (Guadalupe) Hoag Jr. of Charlotte and Gerald (Teresa) Hoag of Lyons; daughter, Emilee Hoag of Potterville; eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter on the way; brother, Gerald (Barbara) Hoag of Grand Rapids; sister, Norma Moray of Lansing; and special friend, Irene Goldbeck of Frankfort.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; infant son, Richard; four brothers and two sisters.
Memorial services were held June 25 at Potterville United Methodist Church, with Rebecca Morrison officiating. Interment was at Benton Township Cemetery in Potterville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
David Leonard Hodge
David Leonard Hodge, age 61, of Portage, our loving husband, dad and grandpa passed away at home on Thursday, August 14, 2003. David was born May 31, 1942 in Grand Ledge, the son of Leonard and Minnie Hodge; and has been a Portage resident since 1989. He served in the U.S. Army. He was an avid football fan, coached football with Portage Rocket and West Middle School, and loved watching his sons play for Portage Central. As of late, he enjoyed watching his son Brad & son-in-law Jim coaching in Eaton Rapids. Most important in his life was his family and especially his grandchildren. David was preceded in death by his mother Minnie, father Leonard & sister Clara Miller. On July 6, 1974 he was married to Marcia Austin, who survives.
Also surviving are his children, Tamara Risner, Trina (James) Jecks, Brad (Julie) Hodge, all of Eaton Rapids, Jackie Albert Revilla of Shelby, Jason Hodge of Portage; grandchildren Patricia Freeman, Joey, Manuel & Austin Revilla, Travis & Jacob Jecks, Cole & Carson Hodge; brother and sisters, Charles Hodge of Perry, Leona Hodge of Boyne City [and] Doris (Lynn) Parks of Kingsley.
In accordance with David’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, at Eaton Rapids Wesleyan Church, 6044 S. Clinton Trail. Those desiring to make memorial contributions in David’s memory may direct them to the Family, Eaton Rapids Youth Football Program or the National Kidney Foundation. Edith M. Hodges
Edith Marian Hodges, 99, of Davison, formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 26, 2003.
Mrs. Hodges was born Sept. 11, 1904 in Douglas, the daughter of Frank and Ella (Barnes) Conklin.
She is survived by daughter, Evelyn Bodell of Eaton Rapids; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hodges of Taylor; nine grandchildren, Larry (Vickie) Bodell of Charlotte, Judith (Stephen) Turner of Eaton Rapids, Dennis (Sandra) Bodell of Eaton Rapids, Marian (Greg) McClellan of Goodrich, Roy (Judith) Bodell of Eaton Rapids, Richard (Joan) Hodges of Florida, Randy Hodges, Jerry Hodges and Caroline (James) Buford, all of Taylor; 17 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Vera Conklin of Hickory Corners.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hodges in 1981; son, Richard Hodges in 1998; granddaughter, Anna May Bodell in 1996; and son-in-law, Leonard Bodell in 1998.
Funeral services were held Sept. 29 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Pastor Stephen Klink officiating. Interment was at Munger Cemetery in Eaton Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
Walter Rhodes Hoenig
Walter Rhodes Hoenig, known to all as “Spike”, passed away Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at age 91 in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Spike was born in Riga, Mich., and graduated high school from Blissfield. He married Edna Daniels in 1937 and moved to Leslie. He had two children, Karen Humphrey in Michigan and Russ Hoenig in Pennsylvania. He worked in the farm seed industry for years and eventually purchased Spikes Lawn and Garden Center in Charlotte. Spike retired at age 70 and began his life in Florida, becoming an avid shuffleboard player. He was a lifelong member of the Masons.
He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, three granddaughters, four great-grandchildren, and two brothers.
Cremation took place in Florida.

Kenneth Harro Hoffman
Kenneth H. Hoffman, age 80, of Eaton Rapids, died Monday, December 29, 2003 at a Lansing hospital. Born January 25, 1923 in Battle Creek, the son of Earl Clinton and Nellie Mae (Chafee) Hoffman. Ken served in the Army during World War II, receiving several service medals including 2 Purple Hearts and 3 Bronze Stars. He retired in 1980 after 30 years of service as a Master Craftsman for General Motors in Lansing. Ken was also a handyman who could repair most anything and spent his retirement years helping others. He was also a member of the Liar’s Club at the Old Mill Restaurant in Eaton Rapids. Preceding him in death was a daughter, Becky in 1973; a brother, Clinton Hoffman and sister, Iris Harter.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mary; 3 sons, Robert (Jo) Hoffman of Eaton Rapids, and Charles Hoffman of Hampshire, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Marsha Hoffman of DeWitt; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Clifford (Marian) Hoffman of Battle Creek; sisters, Joyce Howe of Eaton Rapids and Doris Hudson of Colorado; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 2, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with the Rev. Paul Mergener and the Rev. Stephen Klink officiating. Burial followed with military honors at the Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Pallbearers were grandsons, Nate, Chris, Greg, Joshua, Lance, Chad and Jason Hoffman with Kirby Shane and Owen Wilson as honorary bearers. For those desiring memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation in memory of Kenneth H. Hoffman.
Lulia L. Holgate
Lulia L. Holgate, age 88, of Charlotte, died Nov. 21, 2003 at her residence.
She was born Nov. 29, 914 (the 11th of 12 children) in Carbon, Ind. to Calvin LaFayette and Ellen (Purdew) Dowell. Lulia lived in Marquette for 31 years before returning to Charlotte in 1984.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern (formerly of Eaton Rapids) on May 12, 1977 and son, Gary on April 15, 1953.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Holgate of Marquette and Marcia Holgate of Charlotte; step-daughter, Jeanette Dempsey of St. Peter, Minn.; two step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Nov. 24 at Rosehill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids, with Rev. Paul Mazur officiating. Arrangements were by Shelly-Odell Funeral Home of Eaton Rapids.
Harley H. Hood Sr.
Harley H. Hood Sr., of Lansing, died March 2, 2003.
Mr. Hood was born Feb. 24, 1919 in Cadillac, the son of William and Hulda (Housel) Hood. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and is a member of the VFW Post 701 of Lansing and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He retired from General Motors in Lansing in 1984.
Mr. Hood is survived by sons, Robert Hood of Illinois, Gilbert, Charles and Richard Hood of Charlotte, Tom Hood of Battle Creek and Steve Hood of Oregon; daughters, Anna Hood and Carol Knox of Texas; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eilene (Gilbert); son, Harley H. Hood Jr. in 2002; his second wife, Geraldine in 2000; his sister, Ellenora Hill in 1999; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held March 5 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. George Rhye officiating. Interment was at Perry Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids; envelopes are available at the funeral home.
