Richard James
Richard James, 71, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003 in Lansing.
Mr. James was born April 18, 1932 in Stevens Point, Wis. He was in the Navy and was a tax consultant.
He is survived by his significant other, Sue Brown of Lansing; daughters, Karen Aguilar, Cara James and Joni James; and several grandchildren.
Services were held Aug. 15 at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte, with Rev. Leonard Brinkmoeller officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home of Charlotte.
John Michael Janecke
John Michael Janecke of San Diego, CA, formerly of Eaton Rapids, age 52, died Saturday, September 20, 2003 in California. John was born September 23, 1950 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Fred William and Loraine E. (Heil) Janecke. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School, Class of 1968 and Grand Rapids Institute of Technology in 1970. John was a veteran of the US Air Force serving from 1971 to 1975 and was an electrical engineer in California. Preceding him in death was his sister, Mary Lou.
A very loving and caring brother and friend, John is survived by 3 brothers, Robert E. (Linda) Janecke of Williamston, Don D. (Liz) Janecke, Paul R. (Sherry) Janecke both of Eaton Rapids, Nancy (Dan) Teapolt of AZ, Susan E. Hazelton (Neal) of Lansing, Linda D. (Barry) Crites of Eaton Rapids; uncle, Harry Heil; several nieces, nephews and a loyal life partner David Rutt.
Those desiring may make contributions to either AIDS Awareness or Hospice at 4311 Third Ave., San Diego, CA, 92111 in memory of John M. Janecke. Private family services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids.
Maxine Johansen
Maxine Johansen, a long-time resident of the Milford and Union Lake area, died at Huron Valley Hospital Saturday morning, Nov. 15, 2003 after an extended illness. She was 70 years old.
Born Nov. 27, 1932 in Eaton Rapids, she was the daughter of Howard and Hazel (Raines) Miller. The family lived in Charlotte and Maxine graduated from Charlotte High School. Soon after that she met and fell in love with Donald J. Johansen, a construction supply salesman. They were married Nov. 6, 1953 and made their home in Charlotte until the early ‘60s when they moved to North Oakland County to go into business with Carefree Carports in Drayton Plains. Together they raised a son and five daughters in Waterford and Union Lake and after retirement, in the early ‘90s, they move to Milford. Like her husband, Maxine was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Twin Beach Country Club. She also loved bridge, euchre, and gin rummy, and when her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1991, it was her regular card games with family and friends that helped her get through the difficult years of his illness and her own failing health. She is remembered by those close to her as a strong woman whose love bound family and friends together.
Her husband of nearly 50 years preceded her in death in February 2002.
She is survived by a son Charles W. Johansen of Ann Arbor; and five daughters Sally Ingles of San Diego, Diann (Tom) Simone of Whitmore Lake, Margaret (Dave) Cremeans of Longwood, Fla., Barbara Johansen of Highland, and Lori (David) Johansen of Hartland; sister, Doris Sternaman; and seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors of Milford.
Edna M. Johnson
Edna M. Johnson, 90, of Potterville, died peacefully in her home Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003.
Mrs. Johnson was born Jan. 20, 1913, the daughter of Earl and Elma (Roberts) Lovejoy. She was a loving, caring and hard-working beautician. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Robert Johnson, on May 8, 2002. They had participated in local square dancing and loved hosting many square dance gatherings at their home. She was the proud owner of many beauty shops in the Lansing and East Lansing area including Polly Prim, Bruce’s Beauty Shop and Marionettes in the former Olds Plaza Hotel.
She is survived by step-daughter, Ann (Harry) Wiersma of Grand Ledge; grandchildren Marie Edna (Jeff) Nelson, Rebecca (Randy) Boone and Deborah (Paul) Piotrowski; four great-grandchildren; sister, Vera Adams of Okemos; brother, Ron (Veralee) Lovejoy of Florida; sister-in-law, Edrian “Pat” Hanley; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; brothers, Clifford, Cortes, Clyde, Robert, Wayne, and Carl Lovejoy; and sisters Nina Grim and Laura Hamilton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte, with Rev. Timothy Olson officiating. Interment will be at Dimondale Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Heartland Hospice or American Cancer Society. Arrangements were by Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Estill “Buddy” Johson, Jr.
Estill “Buddy” Johnson, Jr. age 55 of Olivet, formerly Eaton Rapids, died Friday April 18, 2003 in Lansing. Buddy was born April 2, 1948 in Floyd Co., KY, the son of Estill and Lora Jane (Thacker) Johnson, Sr. He was formerly employed with Greenbay Foods and Michigan Packaging.
Surviving are his wife of 2 years, Jane; daughter, Angel Watson of Hanover; 3 sons, Buddy J. Johnson of Olivet, Timothy Johnson of KY, Billy Johnson of Jackson; 11 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Zestill “Zak” (Diana) Johnson of Eaton Rapids, Jack Lee Johnson of OH; 5 sisters, Ellen Lee (Phil) Beam of Eaton Rapids, Loretta “Ready” (Ken) Miller of Eaton Rapids, Judy Anne (Clinen) Slone, Lora Jane “Tootsie” Lone bothe of IN, Phyllis Marie Scott of Lansing; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, 3:00 p.m. at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. unto 1:30 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers will be Buddy Johnson, Pat Newsome, Jonny Metcalf, Tom Metcalf, Roy Gamblin, and Ron Bryant.
Norma Zentmyer Johnson
Norma J. Johnson, age 62 of Farmington Square Road, Granger, died peacefully at 5:02 p.m. Thursday March 6th in her home, surrounded by family and friends, after fighting a courageous nine year battle against ovarian cancer. Norma was born on October 28, 1940 in Eaton Rapids, Michigan to Harry & Anita (Bradley) Zentmeyer who preceded her in death. She married Richard S. Jonson on June 24, 1961 in East Lansing, Michigan.
Norma is survived by her husband Richard; a son Brian (Alicia) Johnson of Warsaw, MO; two daughters, Susan (Alex) Callender of Olympia, WA, Diane (Jeff) Wirth of Granger, IN; six grandchildren, Aaron and Meghan Callender, Katie and Jake Wirth, Maliki and Navi Johnson. Also surviving are two brothers, Milton Zentmyer of Santa Fe, NM and Errol Zentmeyer of Delray Beach, FL.
Norma was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church. She was involved in Little Flower’s cancer support group, “Angels of Hope,” and the support group “Life Goes On.” She was an inspiration to the many members of these groups. Throughout her illness she always had a smile on her face and words of encouragement for others. Norma was also retired from Saint Mary’s College, where she was an assistant in the athletic department.
Norma found great joy in her life from family and friends. She was a loving wife for forty-one years to Richard. She was an incredible mother to her three children, and her six grandchildren were the lights of her life. We will carry her love with us forever.
The family of Norma Johnson would also like to express their sincerest thanks to the staffs of Saint Joseph Visiting Nurses’ Association and Michigan Hematology and Oncology. The support, help, and kindness extended to Norma and her family during her illness is truly appreciated.
A memorial service will be held for Norma at Little Flower Catholic Church at noon on March 29, 2003, with Father Don Dilg, C.S.C. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Bubb Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. Bernice Jones
Bernice Jones, 95, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. Formerly of Bellevue, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 in Lake Havasu City.
Bernice was born July 5, 1908 to Henry and Katie (Tompkins) Spinney in Chesaning. She married Victor Jones in 1927; he passed away in 1982 after 55 years of marriage. Bernice enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
Surviving are son, Albert A. Jones of Bellevue; daughter Madelyn Jones of Lake Havasau City; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son, George P. Jones; twin sister, Beatrice Seely; grandson, Paul A. Jones; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Services were held Oct. 23 at Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue, with Rev. James D. Hill officiating. Interment was at Assyria Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
Cindy Lou Jones
Cindy Lou Jones, age 31, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 in Lansing. Cindy was born December 6, 1972 in Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Squires; grandparents, Russell Moffitt, Earl and Annie Jones.
Surviving are her parents, Earl and Carol (Moffitt) Jones of Eaton Rapids; foster mother, Cathy Owens and family of Portland; brother, Jeff (Dee) Squires of Eaton Rapids; 3 sisters, Robin (Terry) North of North Carolina, Debbie (Steve) Jecks, Lisa Franco both of Eaton Rapids; grandmother, Lillian Moffitt of Eaton Rapids and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 27, 2003 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids with Rev. Joe Robbe of Mt. Hope Church, Portland. Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery, Eaton Rapids. Casket bearers were Jack Jardot, Russell Moffitt, Brent Satterlee, Darrell Aldaffer, Dallis Squires and Dennis Moffitt.
Frederick E. Jones
Frederick Edwards Jones, 94 of Bloomfield Hills, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 in Marshall.
Mr. Jones was born Dec. 27, 1908 in Barrow In Furness, England, the son of Albert and Mary Jane (Parkinson) Jones. He was the assistant vice president of the National Bank of Detroit until his retirement in 1974. Mr. Jones was a past master of Trinity Blue Lodge #502 in Detroit and a former member of Metropolitan Methodist Church in Detroit.
He is survived by his son, David Jones of Bloomfield Township; daughter, Lynda (Richard) Otto of Olivet; brother, Albert (Nell) Jones of Hendersonville, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Adele (Henderson) Jones Feb. 18, 1990.
Funeral services were held Dec. 17 at Hamilton Funeral Home in Birmingham, with Rev. Roy Backus of Olivet Congregational Church officiating. Interment was at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy.
