James Koops, Jr.
James P. Koops Jr., 61, of Charlotte, formerly of Olivet, Grand Rapids, and Grant, died Friday, July 25, 2003 at the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in Lansing.
Mr. Koops was born in Grand Rapids, the son of James Peter and Christine (Laban) Koops Sr. He was a retired mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service in Lansing, with 15 years of service, and we a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as Military Police sentry dog handler. Mr. Koops was a 1960 graduate of Olivet High School and a 1964 graduate of Olivet College. He was a member of Olivet Congregational Church, the DAV Chapter in Howell and the Headquarters Co. of the American Legion in Lansing.
Surviving are his mother, Christine (Laban) Koops of Charlotte; and two sisters, Marcia LaFraugh of DeWitt and Jean (Ed) Cihla of Marblehead, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Peter Koops Sr. on June 22, 1981.
Funeral services were held July 29 at Burkehead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Roy Backus of Olivet Congregational Church officiating. Interment with military honors was held at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Olivet Congregational Church or Eaton Community Hospice for the new Hospice House.
Donna B. Krummrei
Donna Belle (Claflin) Krummrei passed away Aug. 30, 2003.
Donna was born April 18, 1916 near Charlotte, the daughter of Roy and Vera Claflin. She attended Quantrel Grad. School, Charlotte High School and Western Michigan Normal in Kalamazoo, where she earned a teaching degree. Donna taught in several Charlotte-area country schools, and lived most of her life in the Charlotte and Lansing areas. After she married Bud Krummrei, she lived on Cisco Lake near Watersmeet in the Upper Peninsula. Together they owned a fishing resort and store there. Donna was a resident of a nursing home in Ironwood for several years before her death.
Doris E. Lange
Doris Elaine (Cove) Lange, of Kalamazoo, died peacefully Saturday, May 10, 2003 at Wood Hills after a four month illness.
She was born Jan. 10, 1915 to Adeline (Paine) and Louis Cove. She lived most of her life in Charlotte until moving to Kalamazoo in 1990. She attended Charlotte Public Schools and graduated from the Saint Lawrence School of Nursing in Lansing in 1936. She worked as a registered nurse until her retirement in 1981. On April 17, 1937, she was united in marriage with Frederick Lange, who preceded her in death. Two daughters, Sally and Susan were born to their marriage. Doris had many interests throughout her long life, including reading, gardening, traveling and sewing, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Many children received gifts of her handmade Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls. She was a member of First Baptist Church and the PEO Sisterhood and had been a member of the Kalamazoo Garden Council, Eaton County Historical Society and the Order of Easter Starr.
In addition to her husband and parents, her bother Robert preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughters, Sally (Gary) Padley of Kalamazoo, Susan (David) Simmonds of Lowell; five grandchildren, Susan (Mark) Davis of Birmingham, Steven (Suzanne) Padley of Royal Oak, Melissa (Brad) Bosker of Kalamazoo, and Richards Simmonds and Aaron (Dolores) Simmonds of Lowell; great-grandchildren, Margaret and Robert Tomas Davis, Kyle and Steven Socia, Matthew and Jacob Bosker, William Padley II, and Ashley Simmonds; five step-great-grandchildren, Rachael, Fred, Robert, Tony, and Monica Vigil; two nephews and a number of cousins, including a special cousin, Virginia Zimmerman; and many friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 24 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 315 W. Michigan, Kalamazoo, with Rev. Mary Beth Sarhatt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Youth Projects, Loaves and Fishes of the American Cancer Society.
Calvin J. Lanning
Calvin J. Lanning, 51, of Charlotte, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his residence.
Calvin was born Jan. 28, 1952 to parents Melvin and Frances Lanning of Dimondale, where he lived until he moved to Charlotte in 1972. He was a member of the U.S. military in the late 1960s and was also a boxer involved in the Golden Gloves program in Dimondale in the mid-1960s. Calvin worked at Mae Ward Couplings in Olivet until the plant closed. He was also employed at St. Regis in Charlotte, and most recently at Decra-Loc in Eaton Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Alexis Lanning of Vermontville; mother, Frances Lanning of Sheridan; two brothers, Leo (Patsy) Lanning of Six Lakes and George (Diane) Lanning of Holt; and many nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Owenda M. Larner
Owenda M. Larner, 78, of Zephyrillis, Fla., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003 at Largo Medial Center in Largo, Fla.
She was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Wiley Township, Ark., to Earl and Mamie (Cypret) Foster. She married Murrel Larner in November 1966; he preceded her in death in 1992.
Owenda was employed at Corning Glass and Fabricators in Marshall. She enjoyed her dogs, flower gardening, the beach and shopping.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley and Bruce Kilbourn of Albion and Gerri Whitmore of Zephyrhillis, Fla.; step-daughters, Bonnie (Art) Gregory, Judy (Ron) Mattson and Merlene (Clinton) Chadwell, all of Lansing; son, Charles (Nancy) Cypret of Springport; son-in-law Dalmer Murphy of Albion; step-son, Rocky (Marsha) Larner of Lansing; sister, Hazel (Charles) Gray of Crooked Lake, Ind.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Foster of Albion; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and a daughter, Phyllis Murphy.
Funeral services were held Nov. 18 at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home in Albion, with Rev. Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was at Clarence Center Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or American Heart Association.
Marie Victoria Lea
Marie “Vicki” Victoria Lea, 55, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. Ms. Lea was born Sept. 18, 1948 in Charlotte, the daughter of Robert and Marie (Bisel) Lea.
Ms. Lea enjoyed the local Grange dances, round dancing, square dancing, knitting and crocheting.
She is survived by her father Robert, brother Robert (Teresa) Lea Jr. of Charlotte, nephews Robert Lea III, and his fiancée Rene Boynton, Christopher Eugene Lea, and Jason Carroll Lea and his girlfriend Tonya Patterson, great nieces Halie Michelle Lea and Paige Marie Lea.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Marie in 1955.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday Oct. 6, 2003 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Karen Wheat officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Visitation is 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Pray Funeral Home.
Hubert H. Lee
Hubert H. Lee, age 74, of Hastings, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
He was born Dec. 24, 1928 in Newton, Ala., the son of Wade and Loni (Smith) Lee. Hubert moved to Charlotte, Michigan in 1946 and then to Hastings in 1969. He was employed at General Motors in Lansing for 37 ½ years, retiring in March 1988. He was a member of Local 652. He married Elodia Quintanilla Jan. 5, 1995. Hubert loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, playing baseball in his younger years, auto repair and heating-cooling repair.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, three brothers, son-in-law and a step-son.
Surviving is wife, Elodia Lee of Hastings; daughters, Cathey Bennett of Spring, Texas, Camey Lee of Hastings, Loni Lee of Nashville, Angie Gonzales of Lansing, Maria Gonzales of Texas, Gloria Gonzales of Lansing; son, Mario Gonzales; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Wayne (Barbara) Lee of Alabama, Fred Lee of Alabama; sister, Melba (Gay) French of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings, with Rev. Stan Parker officiating. Interment was at St. Joseph Cemetery in Lansing.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
Maxene E. Leedy
Maxene Eileen Leedy, age 75, of Lansing, formerly of Charlotte and Flint, died Saturday, June 7, 2003 at the Pleasant View AFC Home in Lansing.
Miss Leedy was born Dec. 17, 1927 in Nashville, the daughter of Azor Jacob and Lela Gertrude (Frank) Leedy. She was a retired school teacher having taught for many years at Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint.
Surviving is a brother, Leon Leedy of Battle Creek. At Miss Leedy’s request, cremation has taken place. Interment of cremains was at Kalamo Hillside Cemetery in Kalamo Township, Eaton County. Arrangements were by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
